  • The A-Z of Wine is taking a look at Pinotage.
Pinotage is a red wine grape that is South Africa's signature variety. It was cultivated there in 1925 as a cross between Pinot noir and Cinsaut (Cinsaut was known as "Hermitage" in South Africa at that time, hence the portmanteau name). It typically produces deep red varietal wines with smoky, bramble and earthy flavors, sometimes with notes of bananas and tropical fruit, but has been criticised for sometimes smelling of acetone.
The wine was bought from Waitrose Supermarket in the UK - Fairview Barrel Aged Pinotage

What are you experiences with Pinotage? Where have you found good bottles?

Arguable the 2 top producers are Beyerskloof ("Diesel" ) and Kanonkop ("Black label" ).
It makes fantastic full bodied reds, but a versatile grape in general, love it.

Not had a top quality pinotage but recently tried a (cheap) Shiraz pinotage from m&s and was left disappointed. Wasn't expecting much and I haven't written it off yet.

@@blurds I've actually never tried a pinotage blend. Your review isn't giving me reason to haha

@@TheGrapeExplorer They are usually labled as "Cape blend", which means there has to between 30% and 70% Pinotage in the blend. KWV's "Perold Trinutum" is a famous one, Warwick's "Three Cape ladies" or Beyerskloof "Synergy" will be easier to find

I live in Cape Town, Pinotage is one of my go-to's especially with so many boutique wine farms on my back door.

Very fortunate for you. I was in Cape Town exactly two years ago this week. Loved it.

.. Hi and thanks for liking the Pinotage .! We are regular visitors to SA from the U.K. and over the years we’ve consumed a little wine ! I’ve been visiting since 07 every year since and thoroughly love SA’s finest wines Chenin and Pinotage .. because of the terroir you should really do a blind tasting of their wines from cool to hot wine regions (Franschhoek Stellenbosch Paarl Worcester Hermanus...).. They vary so much .. for me I love single grape varieties.. they can be awful or fantastic ... hey who wants consistency ..? ( that’s up for debate ?) really enjoyed it .. it also helps when you’re sitting in the vineyards soaking up the weather and the food .. Great stuff ..🇿🇦🍷🥂❤️👌

Definitely try Beyerskloof Traildust. It's a blend of Pinotage/Pinot Noir/Cinsault.

My favourite grape! The aroma is outstanding, the taste is marvelous!! If you are a fan of tannin red dry wines, pinotage will definitely become one of your favourite for sure.

Have been a fan of Pinotage for years, even the old bacon/smoke/coffee styles, which, in my opinion, always showcased the S. African terroir. I’m also enjoying Pinotage blends, such as Warwick Three Cape Ladies!

Yes I'm a fan. I was lucky to go to Stellenbosch last year as part of a wine tour and try many styles.

I always like to go for at least one thing a little different to my preferences when picking a crate, this time I chose a Pinotage. Thanks for yet another informative video, I'm looking forward to tasting it.

Very nice video, spot on info!
I do think you need to make a distinction between the "coffee Pinotage" style, which is pretty devisive, and the vast majority of Pinotage.

Interesting video, again, thank you! I agree basically in all points, and like Pinotage very much if well-done.
I've been visiting the Fairview estate a couple of times and would like to add here that it's a very nice estate with good wines but also very good food. And they have a tower in their front yard in which goats climb and live. Therefore the goat on the label. Cheers

Thanks for that detailed review. I have been growing merlot and making wine for 10 years. I am planning now on expanding with another variety and am thinking seriously about pinotage. I originally was thinking to plant pinot noir but this now sounds more interesting. Can you explain a little maybe about the difference in taste, etc.. between the two? Thanks.

    • @TheGrapeExplorer
      @TheGrapeExplorer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hi there. Great question. What's funny is although Pinotage is a cross of Pinot Noir and Consult, it really is its own thing. Pinot Noir is light to medium bodied and Pinotage is full bodied. The aroma characteristics of Pinotage are at the darker fruit end of the scale where PN is more red fruit. You can also get aromas of rubber and coffee with Pinotage which is completely unlike PN with its earthier tones. Cheers
