    Cool looking spoon. It's crazy how many different styles and methods there are in woodworking. Thanks for filming.

    These are some neat techniques. I typically use the draw knife and do the bowl first then the handle and finish off whittling the back of the bowl. Very cool the different ways to do a spoon.

    Jeff, One of the only videos on TH-cam I enjoyed basically because Im a time served joiner and seen you using your chisels to form the bowl of the spoon. Not an axe or hook knife in sight...... quite refreshing. Going to subscribe to your channel now. Nice vid and lovely spoon when finished.

      Black walnut is always purdy! It needs to season for quite a while before it gets really dark though. When its freshly cut its almost purple!

      You can hollow out a bowl with a hot coal! Let it burn slowly and scrape out the burnt parts. I haven't finished a spoon this way, But I know its possible! Try it out! You can grab a mora hook knife for not much off amazon. Once you get one you'll be a happy camper!

    Hi Jeff, I love your videos, would you consider doing one or responding in message with details on your process for soaking the spoon in hot water?

    • @lotsofwoods
      @lotsofwoods  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ganphotography92 any type of wood that will be wet, and that is sanded needs to have the grain raised.. the easiest way to learn about this is to test for yourself. Sand a spoon, and wash it. See how it feels! Especially black walnut

    Can you explain that wood burning technique you said you did?

    • @lotsofwoods
      @lotsofwoods  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patricia Lopez Its black walnut! and for the wood burning, I had a nail through a small dowel that I just heated with a torch, then drew on the design! I had to reheat it every few seconds. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    I saw another spoon tutorial, and the carver said that if you only use tools to shape your spoons, and don't sand, then you will not get the raised grain/fuzz that you do when using sandpaper. Thoughts?

      Only a straight knife? As mentioned in the other comment you can try a coal. Other than that, maybe find an old gouge and use that!

    • @lotsofwoods
      @lotsofwoods  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spoons are going quicker and quicker. It really depends how nice of a spoon you want to make. You can make something real thin with a small bowl, like those crap bamboo spoons our wives or moms have, or you can make one with a nice curve from a crook. Anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 mins. Check out my site if you'd like to see the stuff I'm making now! www.lotsofwoods.com

    hi Jeff: I wittled a couple of spoons out of pine. I havd sanded them down. how many times should I soak pine in warm water? since I want to use these spoons, is beeswax and mineral oil the best option or will that wash off?

    • @lotsofwoods
      @lotsofwoods  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Barbara Schulz I personally use that finish. Once I found out that spoons found in museums werent finished, I really lost my opinion on oils. Use whatever oil your comfortable using!

      @Xerox1911 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why buy an overpriced starter set when you can go to an antique shop and find chisels and gouges for 4 dollars a piece? Also, I saw chisels in Home Depot starting at 8 dollars. Most sets I find cost much more than they're worth separate.

    How long do you soak it for?

    • @lotsofwoods
      @lotsofwoods  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you really only need to cover the surface in water. Not sure it matters how long of a soak, but maybe how many times you soak the spoon. Ive tried soaking spoons for a long time, and the pigment in the wood can actually change.. If you just rinse and rub the spoon down with your hands that is suffice
