  • I spent the day with green woodworker Lee Stoffer and he kindly took the time to record this video with me demonstrating his process for carving a spoon
    Lee's Instagram - / stoffercraft
    Apologise for the 'strobe' effect on the video but this was due to us recording indoors under fluorescent lighting as there was bad weather outside to record there
    As always I appreciate you watching
    Peace
    Zed

      Lee Stoffer hey Lee, I know you've probably been asked a million times but what kind of wood is best to use for this ?

    • @LeeStoffer
      @LeeStoffer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      always try to use green wood, i.e. fairly freshly cut so it still has plenty of moisture content, species is less important but Birch and Cherry are favourites of mine, the wood featured in this video is Rowan, Cheers.

      Zed Outdoors It reminds me of a line from Rambo III when Col. Trautman says "There was a sculptor. He found this stone, a special stone. He dragged it home and he worked on it for months until he finally finished it. When he was ready he showed it to his friends. They said he had created a great masterpiece, but the sculptor said he hadn't created anything. The statue was always there, he just chipped away the rough edges."

    That is a nice hatchet, I would not mind having one, I use a hewing hatchet to chop out my spoons. It takes a little bit different technique to use it left handed but it works extremely efficiently in either hand as I use both hands. This is an excellent tutorial.

    Zed I just watched this again and i am still enjoying it. i had a thought, Just my opinion you have shown several spoon tutorials and some people my gripe they are the same. While the general procedure for carving spoons is the same Each presenter to me shows something different and i learn something new. So for me if you made another tutorial with another presenter I would look forward to that. This time and don't laugh it was his carving block. i live in California USA and do not live near a forest, But I found and old section of log and an old wood stool. Removed the seat and will screw the legs to the log section. I don't know if there is an optimal height depending on how tall you are. I kept stopping the video to see how Lee had the top looks like the horizontal cut had a downward angle to the pith and the section removed may have been a third of the log. I can see now why the notches in the edge were made. Thank you and Lee for the video.

    Like the simplicity of how to add the crank into the billet. He does make it look easy which I’m sure it isn’t lol. I use templates as much as possible as it’s really easy to get lost when carving with a knife to get the basic shape
