      @@marksargent2440 Not so sure about the 'end times', but selfishness is a basic emotional defence which many people need to overcome and it is something that has stymied our progress since day 1. Popular/modern culture (i.e. a commercially lucrative culture) promotes the adoration of the self to placate our emotional needs with vacuous bullshit instead of teaching respect and understanding in real relationships and enriching lives and minds. The upshot is people who think that the Earth is flat, computers have demons inside them and that "everybody is lying to me!" Well for a significant portion of last century China *wasn't* part of the world, instead it was sitting on its own sulking in the corner. Now that it's decided to come out and play it's still butt hurt because the world doesn't want to play by China's new rules, instead the world is happy with the rules we decided on in China's absence. So I would argue, the world has grown dependent on Google, and China is now throwing rocks from the corner but has yet to join the world.

    • @_Stin_
      @_Stin_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It's very true, too - All human-created code is flawed, including the programming languages we use are deeply flawed.
      I view computers as interesting little machines, but modern culture has blindly jumped on the idea of this perfect computerised future where none can exist - it was clever marketing that everyone has now bought into.
      Even the Internet has the ability to be far more resilient than businesses have made it. There are many single points of failure in the implementation of the Internet infrastructure and they are not being removed. The Internet itself also unreliable.
      The patterns of behaviour created by our expectations will be hard for some to overcome.
      IMHO, problems always seem to creep in when a complex concept is taught to non-engineering types with penny-pinching private corporations tightening the purse strings to milk out every last penny of profit for as long as possible - The outcome is what we have today, a pale imitation of an original, far more intricate and well considered concept and implementation.
      One of the earliest mistakes we made was removing the error correction and recovery code from early operating systems created by university computer science engineers, as it was 'too much code for companies to maintain' and 'required too much storage space'. Then we get buggy, crashy messes for computer OS's and we have perpetuated this broken OS model to this very day.
      Anyhoo, rant over lol

Or " Try entering a correct address ") when clicking on the address link provided by Googoe. My favorite is Mrs. Assistant's all purpose statement "Something Went Wrong" Yah, no shit. "Please try again" (meaning it's your fault) , its always left open to the possibility that you, not Googoe was at fault. Never once have I ever seen any apology or acceptance of responsibility when something goes haywire. Denial of culpability is the first choice for nearly everyone anymore. "I didn't do it", "It wasn't me", "I don't know what you're talking about". The mantra of anyone with the least bit of responsibility in America nowadays.

      @shubham vashisht I suppose not all bugs are spelling mistakes or syntax/semantic errors. Most are logic-oriented (wrong variable/check/etc or no range check/etc) or architecture-oriented (buggy/erratic instructions or hardware.)
      The ECC was for erroneous states - If the CPU had to halt, or entered an erroneous state, the OS could recover from it - Imagine a BSOD or KP, but the OS 'sorts itself out' and resumes operation, possibly ABENDing and the task responsible, returning you to a working system instead of having to power-off and cold reboot the thing.
      Only issue, I would think, is that the output code MUST constitute a profitable 'product' to be commercially viable within a reasonable time-frame, so if the code ratio held true, OSs would be around 5 times the size and probably wouldn't fit on a DVD any more, it would be too big to maintain and likely wouldn't make as much of a profit, if any lol
      Which brings us onto suitable architecture, but that's another powder keg of phishes.
      Maybe time for a new architectural paradigm? In the beginning, we originally focussed on individual machine operations (ie MOVe, ADD, SToRe, etc.) which allows for the widest gamut of code to be written as the future usage of computers was largely unknown at the time, but, as with music, as things move forward we create standard conventions so a CPU could be built from larger functional units/conventions. Maybe instructions in the future won't just carry out a single, discrete function, but behave rather more like a Swiss army knife, holistic manner, whereupon the result would accelerate 90% of established computational functionality in a single subset of instructions? Something like RISC but on steroids? Maybe. idk.
      PS: I am a HUUUUGE RISC fan boy, esp. ARM. I actually got into a spot of fisty-cuffs over CPU architecture in high school. So lame (but he WAS wrong about Intel lol)

I would expect something like: your phone connects to the smart home hub, gives it a command, like to turn a light on or off, and then the hub would tell the light bulb to turn off. Connecting to a server seems like an extra step.
