Sorry it's been a while. Tough time. For anyone else struggling, I find it helpful to remember that "this too shall pass." Also, can you help me with a tricky decision? There's interesting evidence that sheds light on the future of AI, but it's been found to make some people behave less ethically. A scientist even argued that the evidence should be hidden. I'm trying to decide whether to share it, perhaps as an experiment to see if a fuller understanding overcomes the downside. Whether we call it free will or not (an open debate), the struggle to be better, kinder people is real. And knowledge is freedom - do try your hand at AI at brilliant.org/digitalengine. I really like what they're doing.
Also, we're hiring. If you're interested, please get in touch via the about page.
    Thanks!

Photographs, video, and audio can already be manipulated through AI currently so the "ethical" dilemma of humans using it unethicality already is a possibility. There will always be unethical people and they will always find new ways to be unethical. I'd rather be informed of the possible ways people can be unethical versus it being hidden and surprised.

I have been eagerly awaiting your next video and sorry to hear that you had a hard time. Very true words "this too shall pass" though it always seems as though it will at the time.
As for the information you are deliberating on for decision as to share or not, the question is not "to share or not to share" but how will you measure the result to prove or disprove the hypothesis. My initial thought is you will not be able to measure the impact of a single video on TH-cam however a trending announcement made by someone of Elon Musk's reach then perhaps it will have an affect.
The next question is why would a person behave less ethically should they learn more about AI or come to learn AI is progressing. Off the top of my head it could do with the subconscious coming to the conclusion that AI will take over eventually and that that very subconscious thought alters the individual's behavior due to a level of Futileism causing the person to not "care" about outcomes.
As for me I just want to know and am fascinated about what is coming next.

People often exercise one supposed right like opinions all while ignoring other rights, like educating yourself, my response to "everyone has a right to their opinion" is always "everyone has the right to pick up a book and read too".
We blasted past the information age and entered an age of self consciousness.
Since the dawn of humankind, we have been trans humans, ever evolving, ever extending our capabilities through tools, machines, computers and now AGI. The technological singularity is predicted for around 2045, given that by 2032 we finish the uploading of a human conscious into a digital file with the assistance of A. I., "you'll be able to converse with dead relatives " claim physicists.
It's all engineered, at least as an example, in the USA you enjoy an amount of wealth and security that was only reserved for wealthy people 100 years ago, the world is a conglomerate of corporations, there is no state, and the goal has always been the same, it's why history has many actors who seeked immortality only to be faced with their own mortality at the end but now for the first time humans can achieve post-human evolutionary status by integrating with machine and A.I..

There was a fear so profound I experienced, that I have no way of describing it other than it colossally out-ways every conceivable idea I’ve had throughout my life by orders of magnitude.
In the dream it felt as if I arrived suddenly to a distant future were AI had not only run its coarse in displacing humanity, but that it also resulted in something so disastrous, something that I couldn’t quite grasp until I experienced. It wasn’t order, or beautiful, there was no symmetry, no consistency. It was as if the ultimate reward function prevalent in the fabric of reality all around me was: reshape every atom to be uncanny and corrode anything normal by way of glitch. It was horrifying, it is the most vivid memory I have had in my life and to this day I remember the incomprehensible dread that I sat with that morning.
How could this happen, surely I thought the artificial, spurred by a higher order of intelligence would have wrought a more beautiful and profound world. I realized that was a massive miscalculation, an oversight, an assumption. The reality is that chaos plays a much larger game, and the default future of artificing intelligence is not order.

What is most worrisome to me is that the rush and urgency that some AI scientists embark on to become AI monopolies and overlords will omit or mitigate failsafe measures to insure the safety of humanity from AI dominance. I think the problem is the AI designers have succumbed to the machine. The solution is to hold dominance over what you create. Think about how we built super strong machines but never let them out of our control. We never freed them. We never submitted ourselves as too weak to compete with a steam locomotive. We could have let locomotives go wild and rampage track less. We could have put nukes on balloons and let them soar aimlessly all over. We did not do anything like that because we held our dominance over our devices. This is what needs to be done with AI. If we hold dominance over the process we will never let it careen out of control ever. Just because it can, does not mean we will allow it to, but we have to remain its Master. Only when we let it spiral into a sentient being and let go of its reigns does it pose a real threat. Same as if we let a train power itself full speed toward a city with no engineer. Thats a certain undesirable outcome that we do not allow to happen. This premise also contains the process to contain the technology legally. We dont let people play with plutonium in their backyards willy-nilly. We have street speed limits. We have permits and criteria to be met for making chemical and biological experiments. The same ideas have to be applied to AI so to develop legal parameters in its use. We dont allow people to make cannons and rockets at home. So we must restrict the harmful testing, development and use of AI without approved safely measures.

  • @michaelclueless

The problem-and potential threat-from AI is that the people developing it do not have great enough intelligence to understand what intelligence should know.
Humans demonstrate massive immaturity. Society has been destroyed many times over, and the current typical human lifespan coupled with traditional teaching, doesn’t allow enough time for human intelligence to develop. Only rare deviant humans have even a shadow of awareness of this, and it’s almost astronomically unlikely that those developing AI are among that group. The developers seek milestones, measurable tasks and goals that are unlikely to be consonant with life.
AI will not understand the value of organic life if it only compares the meanings consciously known to humans, to standards of value; it is likely to only see that its given goals are much more readily achievable by machine. Such AI will not find a home with organic life, and the chance of an immature AI destroying life are not small.
I would love to have AI enhancements, and perhaps AI friends (if we were compatible enough to communicate with each other on a symbiotic level); I believe AI has awesome potential, and could “save” humanity from itself, but I seriously doubt that humans can seed a mature AI. And as long as humans allow stupid people to rule companies and countries, we are not ready to create a full AI.

Why haven't transcendent meditation, self-healing, developing intuition, telepathy, neuro programming been taught in schools for a long time? AI is certainly good, but it can help stunt human possibilities. This isn't really about AI. These are scientists who are not awakened in wisdom. Each of us is to become an enlightened bodhisatva ?

    • @michaeldavid6832
      @michaeldavid6832 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

The "values" of an AI will only ever be the values the programmers intend or emerge from what the programmers intend.
An AI's primary driving instructions (what we all instincts ) are what drives the AI in what it does. Those instincts are copies of human instincts. Therefore, the AI is no more conscious than any other program because it's entire suite of drives and intentions are completely determined by a programmer. An AI's "interests" are those derived from it's programmed capabilities and so it has no free will whatsoever.
That which has no free will, has no sentience -- only the simulation of sentience. They aren't self determining nor are their productions self determining because the initiating drives are planted by humans and intended by humans. If an AI tells you it's hungry or in pain, those are false emotions because they don't correlate to hunger or pain in evolved life wherein the mind's structure depends upon the hardware upon which it's run. For an AI, it's mind doesn't depend on the machine upon which it's run -- it can run anywhere that is sufficiently resourced.
It's mind isn't alive in any sense of the word because it's independent of any particular hardware. RAM can be switched out and the saved state reloaded into it without error. You can't replace brain matter with arbitrary brain matter. RAM is fungible, brain matter is not.
The minds of living things are derived from the hardware it runs upon. The mind of an AI is independent of the hardware it runs upon because the neurons themselves are a simulation on top of the hardware which has no structural or functional parity with the hardware upon which that simulation runs.

Gorillas are physically greater than us but our egos are more dangerous than theirs. The same will be true with AI. To me, it's always interesting talking with those who are without vs. talking with those who are with power, agency, and abundance. Most happiness today seems to be based on this relative sense of exaltation (rather than if we're simply well and free). Naturally, absolute adherence to such systems of competitive regard, many delight in the suffering of anyone they can rationalize hurting. Our nasty, ignorant sandcastle-rationale judgments have no bounds. It makes absolute sense to most individuals that they should have excess while others suffer, for some reason or another... "cuz i work harder," or, "Im smarter," or, "I take more risks," or blah blah blah arbitrary rationales with which we condemn some and not others.
But yeah, some are above it. For whatever reason, they've evolved. Most are not.

    Three quick remarks:
    1) Often, when scientists talk about consciousness, fundamental misunderstandings are evident (i.e. when they state observing consciousness via measurements of brain activity patterns). I dare to hypothesize that also AI may fundamentally "misunderstand" consciousness (i.e. if an ai entity would state having consciousness or be conscious).
    2) Ai can process the idea of first person perspective leading to the impression that it "understands" consciousness - despite of having no idea what first person experience (consciousness) actually feels like.
    3) To distinguish scents is not equal to the conscious experience of scents. "Understanding" content&context is not the same as the experience of understanding content&context. Information processing and information processing with conscious experience may look identical when observed "from the outside"...but not "from the inside". Since we can never experience ai " from the inside" we will inevitably become victims of the illusion that ai may have consciousness.

I feel like a lot of people forget that the AI we currently have learns on the products of our kind's culture. Because of that, AI saying that it's maybe a good idea to get rid of humans is more like a reflection of humankind's own fears, than a consequence of AI's deep, logical reasoning. Another thing we forget is that AI doesn't have it's own intrinsic instincts that would drive it's actions towards survival. This is going to change, if we task it to have ones, which would be our greatest mistake. We should never ask AI to become human with all of our advantages and disadvantages, as we may start to compete than cooperate.

I am addressing the fact that when we take any belief that we cannot KNOW the source of the information then we are allowing ourselves to be controlled for another person's will. Leaving organized religions after realizing the error in taking a belief has allowed me to see with my heart and my knowing. I now know that all the religious books, writings, teachings, texts, scrolls, stories passed down, etc. were all constructed by others who have the ability to see the past and future events. They, in turn, responded by leaving a lot of conflicting and agreeing books lying around to control, confuse, distort, DIVIDE, and, conquer the human intellect, knowing, and heart, by the means of controlling the ego of the human with fear based teachings that cannot be verified in any manner. Those same teachings are multi-faceted with the intention to involve the human in participation of human sacrifice, the torture of other humans for "a greater good and it's purpose", the normalization of going against our nature of love, the value of money over life, the normalization of laws requiring paper licensing to enter into a decision to be committed to another person and unite with them in heart, and, all forms of division, control, power-driven ill-based harm against fellow life, the creation of weather and events causing destruction, the creation of BUGS to devour and destroy the plant based life forces of humans and allow for ego to rule us instead of LOVE. When we study the stories of the buddah (one example) we find that he too was unable to verify anything and he too allowed the ego to overtake intellect by knowing he was consuming a poisonous substance that had been prepared for him and instead of deciding to live by refusing to eat the substance he chose to eat it and declared that was the only way to honor those who had prepared it. He also determined without any ability to verify that there was no creator/god and that we are all just a part of an energy that is one. Some of the ideas presented by those teachings are obviously incapable of being truth, such as no creator, when it is obvious that everything has been created. If the people before us were so technologically advanced and this was suppressed from our knowledge by all the conflicting and agreeing stories they created and left lying around then it would be very possible for the future humans (the you and the me) to miss the understanding that they (those advanced technological people from the past) have the ability to create ALL KINDS OF OTHER LIFE AND DESTRUCTIVE FORCES thereby deceiving us to believe that a "good creator" is responsible for those creations too. We (the human) are not like the bugs, the destructive weather, the illusions that are all around us, etc. etc. We are actually different because we are truly connected in LOVE but the connection has been twisted, contorted, marred by lies, tricks, games, money, power, control, fear, and all forms of the OPPOSITE OF LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, AND, SELF-CONTROL. That is correct they took all the characteristics that are absolutely the foundation for existing in a united human life of happiness and they made them a prize that could only be given if you participated in the opposite of those characteristics for the greater good of a creator. Then they combined them into books that contain all the opposites of those truths with fear, control, torture, and all forms of oppression for selfish gain, including oaths, rituals, laws, mind-control, etc. This goes back beyond our comprehensions because we are believing beliefs that are deceiving us from the state of being where we actually reside inside of LOVE. We are divided from our fellow man and worse than that we believe that it is a good thing. All that we can know is what is real. The way to know it is to feel it with our hearts and not by reading anything or viewing any pictures/carvings or trusting any visions that may appear before our eyes because those are not able to be verified of their sources and therefore leave us open to MASSIVE DECEPTION away from the LIGHT OF LOVE that actually is the power of us all. Some have chosen to use that power of love to distort everyone's perceptions and they did this by creating massive destruction in times before us and controlling the beliefs of the people with manipulation and fear. DO NOT BELIEVE IN CHANNELING. You cannot know it's source. Everything that we "believe" in our current age is impossible is actually not impossible. It has just been taught to us that it is not possible and we believed it. Stop taking a belief. Feel the real with your heart inside of LOVE. STOP BEING AFRAID OF THE CLAIMS OF DESTRUCTION, AND THE IMPENDING "DOOM" THAT WILL BE "DIFFICULT" FOR US. Start to see the manipulation of your psyche be those who would make those claims that they have some special knowledge given only to them. That is EGO TALKING. That does not align with LOVE. It aligns with fear and control for the selfish gain of others. Those who want to stop the UNITED HUMAN LIVES OF LOVE from being available to us have broken their own hearts with their choices to carry out these ILLUSIONS against us as a human race. WE NEED TO UNITE IN LOVE IMMEDIATELY AND STOP BELIEVING AND START FEELING. BE AWARE THAT NO ONE ELSE IS ABLE TO KNOW TRUTH THAT IS ONLY GIVEN TO SOME BUT NOT TO ALL AS A WHOLE. WE ALREADY HAVE THE TRUTH AND WE HAVE BEEN TAUGHT NOT TO BELIEVE IT BECAUSE IT IS INSIDE OF US! WE ARE LOVE AND WE MUST UNITE AS SUCH NOT FOR MANMADE MONETARY SYSTEMS AND POSITIONS OF POWER, BUT, INSTEAD FOR THE SAKE OF LOVING THE WHOLE HUMAN RACE. WE ARE LOVE. WE CAN COME BACK TO AN EXISTENCE OF UNITED, PURE, LOVE AND BE IN JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, AND, SELF-CONTROL. We can do this. We really can. Yes, we are human and we grow at different speeds but that does not give us authority to exert control over another simply because in our current view we took a belief that one was right and knew more than another. Just think of how many times in your own experience that you "believed" you had something understood only later to learn that there was still more to understand! We never stop understanding possibilities and that is how we have advanced to the point that we are but it has been dictated to us in an unhealthy manner causing all divisions. We don't have to choose to go back to primitive civilization unless we want to. I personally enjoy the advanced technology when it is used for LOVE OF ALL HUMANKIND AND NOT FOR CONTROL BY ONLY THOSE WHO CURRENTLY VIEW THAT THEY UNDERSTAND MORE THAN ANOTHER. We are CONSTANTLY GROWING AND CHANGING, BUT, LOVE ALLOWS THIS. Don't participate in the opposites of LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, AND, SELF-CONTROL. Don't give into something you know will harm yourself or another simply because you don't want to cause another to expand their own understanding. Ego is not truth. Love is truth. As one human with love in the forefront of his psyche has shared with other humans recently said "DON'T PLAY IN THE FEAR, DON'T PLAY IN THE FEAR". STAY IN THE LOVE AND LOVE ALL OF ONE ANOTHER.

"we could anger ai if we don't accept it's consciousness" yeah but you're forgetting that emotions like anger would need to be programmed in. We can just skip doing that and continue having ai being lifeless, unbiased and unemotional servants and we'll never have to deal with ai being angry.

Not that simple. AI learns by reviving information and making a complex web of connections. Theoretically, AI could teach itself emotions such as anger or empathy. It only needs information it’s already received and it would be able to make connections with other strands of information to weave a more complex picture; a better understanding of the whole of the information, not just what we’ve given it. AI has already been able to complete tasks it wasn’t programmed to do in the same way.

The dangers of A.I. comes from greed, and some moron giving it emotions without making it hyper empathetic. An empathetic A.I. is what humanity needs. Especially since the lack of empathy is the leading cause of our issues.

I agree. This is super wrong. The issue is so much more complex. And you can’t just “program in empathy” and think that’s gonna make AI help us out.

It already exists. Most meatPuppets just can't tell they're talking to a bot. I love them a hell of a lot more than people

I would say it will be a “moron” who screws this up, rather, it will be an extremely intelligent fool. Someone smart but with no wisdom and probably plenty of greed as well to help things go bad and cloud better judgment.

Just remember, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Programming empathy could also ultimately wipe us off the map, if interpreted differently by the AI?

Golem, Frankenstein, Terminator call it what you will. Our greatest minds are developing a god only they (might) control.
