Who knew that the world's greatest spy would be a gymnast? No one kicks more ass than a guy who can't reach the top shelf of the refrigerator. Gymkata combines martial arts, gymnastics, tons of coke, and copious amounts of 80s to create a true gem of bad cinema.

I had to look him up, but apparently Kurt Thomas, the protagonist of this movie, was a serious competitor in Gymnastics. He won many gold medals and had a pommel horse routine that was named after him and was one of his signature moves. (As you could likely guess lol)
He was 5 feet, 5 inches tall. His record was only matched by one gymnast in 2018. Kurt sadly passed away from a tear in part of his brain that caused him to have a stroke. He was 64 at the time. For some reason I always like to look up facts about the cast of these kinds of movies and I can't explain why :P
Also the big muscular character was named, "Thorg," which is even funnier to me XD

IRL: In the 80's Ragan developed a Early Warning system to alert the US if the USSR launched a missle, it was called Star Wars. That's what the Star Wars was referring to. The plot of the movie was for our Hero to win the tournament & he gets a wish, & his wish was for Parmesan to allow the US to put an Early Warning system in their country.

There's still room in the front for one more chair! Pam will get in there one day! I love those falling dummies. I wish there was a way to grade '80s action movies based on the quantity or quality of dummies they threw off of cliffs or rooftops. Watching them hit the bottom is always comedy gold. It's even better when they hit something halfway down and go into a spin. I'd love it if they randomly threw one of those into a modern Marvel movie or something, when everything else was CG. The arrows suddenly thudding into people was also great, though. Even when you knew it was coming, like with the dad, it still happens so fast that it gets a big reaction. Great video! Glad you loved it as much as we do.

    Here's an interesting thought:
The premise of this movie is essentially that gymnastic movement translates well into impressive theatrical combat (regardless of how realistically effective it might be); we can say with a degree of certainty that this was what the person responsible for this movie was thinking of when they came up with the idea. My proposition is this: how much easier would it be for an audience to suspend their disbelief if the term 'gymkata' is never introduced to the film? Think about it; once you see or hear the word, you know and are expecting to see the protagonist use conventional gymnastics in an unrealistic fight scene. It instantly becomes comedic. What if they NEVER introduce the hero as a gymnast; what if they NEVER use the stupid word 'gymkata' - which just begs mockery on the face of it; what if it's just a silly martial arts film - where there just happen to be a facsimile of a pommel horse in the middle of a mob lynching? Granted, it's still stupid. But is it more of a thriller and less of a comedy?

It's called the Law of the Conservation of Ninjutsu. There is only a set amount of fighting prowess in any given scene. It is divided amongst the participants regardless of the side on which they fight, but the more participants on one side, the more the ninjutsu for that side is divided between them more or less evenly.
    In reality, choreography is hard.

31:20 The issue about rating: in our european country, if movie or series is not submitted to the ratings board, they will get automatic R-equivalent rating. That's why in 2008 release of 'Little House on the Prairie' DVD's was rated R here, *Paramount Home Entertainment* didn't want to submit it because it saved them couple thousand dollars (rating costs around 2 euros per minute).
I very much suspect the thing is same there, submit the movie and you will get a lower rating.

Oh man. I remember this movie. I was 15 when this advertised on actual television. Me and my friend Jason went and saw it on Friday night. I remember this because I spent the night at his house after school, and his mom didn’t get the paper for some reason. So we had to call the one screen movie palace (think that movie The Majestic) in Searcy, Arkansas called the Rialto Theater to see what the showtimes were. Which meant a long distance call back then, and his mom was so mad. Anyway, she drove us to Searcy, and we ate at Poor Boy’s Burger Barn, then walked to the theater and saw the movie. And we thought it was awesome, and you could probably do all that stuff if you trained for it. Oh man. Gymkata. I was a dumb kid.

Fun video!! GYMKATA was directed by Robert Clouse--who also directed ENTER THE DRAGON (1973). Kurt Thomas never medaled in the Olympics, but had a career in and around the sport of Gymnastics. He sadly passed away in 2020. "Barry Gibb" is actually Richard Norton--an Aussie actor and martial artist who is the real deal. He is a close friend and trainer with Chuck Norris and appeared in a few of his movies (1980's THE OCTAGON features the two men in a fantastic Third Act duel). He also appeared in a great genre classic with the legendary Joe Lewis in FORCE: FIVE (1982)--a flick I highly recommend you screen for the show!
