Gymkata is my favorite gymnastics based martial arts movie starring Kurt Thomas. It truly is one of the best "so bad it's good movies". It's like The Room of martial arts flicks. Another great review, sir!
This was one of my favorite martial arts movies during my 80s karate phase. Kurt’s trainer (the one with the falcon) is Tadashi Yamashita who is also BlackStar Ninja in American Ninja, and Seikura in The Octagon. (Thank you for these amazing videos!)
Too much movement for Steve, he'd have his stunt double do it. Then layer his face over the stunt double. Then layer the other guys face over that one.
Just when I thought the conveniently located gymnastics alley bar was the coolest thing I have ever seen, this movie blows my mind with the conveniently located insane people town’s pommel horse! The only thing missing was a conveniently located battle trampoline. The unnecessarily gratuitous slow motion was the icing on the cake!
Kurt Thomas is real life "Luke Skywalker"! (minus the midachlorians) Then I see the "Mel brooks" guy, and it's "Yogurt". "Star Wars" and "Spaceballs" meet. I needed this.
R.I.P. Kurt Thomas...you will be missed. Saw Gymkata in the theatre when it came out when I was 10- instantly went home to jump over lawn furniture and climb trees, lol!

John Cabot (aka Giovanni Caboto) was the name a a pretty famous Italian explorer. He was the first European explorer to actually step foot in North America, on the East cost of Canada in 1497 (Christopher Columbus only went to the Bahamas). In the 1970's it was determined that the Viking discovered Newfoundland, and built a settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows around 1000AD, thus beating both Columbus & Cabot by about 500 years. TLDR - John Cabot is a fine name.

Just like Alexander the Great he brought his formidable Gym-Fu skills to far flung Parmesan! There’s definitely a revenge story for elite athletes in there somewhere, I didn’t get to win gold so I’m a gonna burn down the Mafia!
I'm sure most folks here know about it but Richard Norton was one of the guests on Scott Adkins' "The Art of Action" yt series and he talked in some detail about this film (and other stuff too of course, it's a really interesting interview if you like action/martial arts cinema).

Awesome stuff. 0:09 In honor of the Olympics you'll do Gymkata? You mean the Winter Olympics where gymnastics doesn't feature? ;) 1:00 Present tense? You know Kurt Thomas passed away two years ago, right? 1:35 A gymnast is doing it (a game based on athletic skill) because world-class gymnasts are - surprise, surprise - among the most capable athletes in the world. Plus his special intelligence father had also competed in the game previously and had disappeared without a trace. So there's that. 7:32 They're not ninjas. "Ninjas" with machine guns however featured on the film's poster. 9:17 The first one wasn't fair because they weren't in the same stage as the prisoner - which is why he was immediately killed for breaking the rules. The second one was fair because he was in the same stage as the prisoner as explained in the film's dialogue. 10:24 That was again against the rules, but as you should know, they were intentionally breaking all the rules at that point.
Family guy made a reference to this movie when stewie did a cutaway gag about having a style of martial arts that’s basically weaponized gymnastics but it is extremely specific in its requirement of having gymnastic Equipement (such as a pommel horse) conveniently placed where a fight needs to happen. They even call it gymkata and stewie uses it to rescue an Asian princess.

Wow, that parkour move at 7:00 was just off the charts. Who knew that such a cheesy movie would have such talent in it. [END SARCASM] Wait...at 14:57 we get a mention of the Stars Wars program in Gymkata? Ummm. Okaayyy. So. maybe in Seagal's next movie that takes place in India, they can mention that chess was invented in India in the 8th century. That would be an appropriate insert. Right? "Death becomes you." RER: "Yea, and oats become cereal." LOL!!
Man! I so much remember watching this movie way back in the day when I was a kid, in the late 80s. I was so pumped up about all the techniques and mad moves I had learned by watching it, that right there next morning I tried to take on the two bullies who terrorized our schoolyard. Boy, did I get my ass kicked bad!
Zamir, the villian, is played by Richard Norton who had a very interesting career. He's an Australian martial artist, stuntman, stunt coordinator, actor, who first got into the entertainment business as a bodyguard for various actors & music stars. He was the bodyguard for Kylie Minoque & the Rolling Stones among other people and then went to Hong Kong, where he starred in a bunch of martial arts action movies alongside Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Cynthia Rothrock and Sammo Hung, mostly playing the villian. He's still in the movie/tv business, working also as a fight choreographer/stunt coordinator behind the camera. (Spartacus tv-show, Mad Max Fury Road) Jackie Chan's ''City Hunter'' movie, where he plays again the main villain, would be a perfect movie to review on your channel. That's the one with the Street Fighter sequence, where Jackie turns into Chun Li.
When I was a kid this was my favorite movie to go over to my grandmothers house and watch on her VHS. Had me thinking gymnastics was it's own martial art style lol.

Great review. Either way this film is super nostalgic for me. The conveniently placed gymnast tools only makes it better cause Kurt Thomas was literally a bad ass of 80's gymnast. Still love this movie till this day!!!

Hey, my daughters do gymnastics. So that means they're top notch martial artist. 😂 I know it doesn't work like that. But the people who made this movie believed so.😂
(Written before even watching the review) I'm so excited you are doing this movie! I was wondering when you were going to get around to it. I remember first watching it late one night on either TBS/TNT/USA and thought it might be some strange fever dream hallucination because I wasn't really sure what I was watching was real. (Written after watching the review) That fever dream feeling was definitely generated by the village of the crazy people scene, especially the super long slow-mo and the anachronistic pommel horse. I do love the Princess Bride splicey during the reacts segment, and feel you could have done a splicey with the handler getting shot with an arrow and either the video or just the audio of Lancelot's squire getting shot in Monty Python's The Holy Grail and Eric Idle saying "Message for you, sir.". Also, I feel like during the crazy town compilation, for the guy hanging out the window and laughing it sounds like they took and slightly modified the sound effect of Salacious Crumb laughing - Jabba's Koawakian Monkey-Lizard (I am THAT nerd) from Return of the Jedi.

Wait...at 14:57 we get a mention of the Stars Wars program in Gymkata? Ummm. Okaayyy.
So. maybe in Seagal's next movie that takes place in India, they can mention that chess was invented in India in the 8th century. That would be an appropriate insert. Right?
"Death becomes you."
RER: "Yea, and oats become cereal." LOL!!
Lol yup! It was aaaallll about Star Wars....I guess.
I'm glad you liked it :)
My day just got better!!👌😌
Hurrah! I'm so glad
@@RedEyeReviews 😊😊
Red Eye Reviews, Didn't I tell you this was comedy gold? 🤣
It really really is
@@RedEyeReviews may you can add this to the list: Passenger 57 with Wesley Snipes. The Replacement Killers as well.
Absolute classic as always thanks
(Spartacus tv-show, Mad Max Fury Road)
Jackie Chan's ''City Hunter'' movie, where he plays again the main villain, would be a perfect movie to review on your channel. That's the one with the Street Fighter sequence, where Jackie turns into Chun Li.
When I was a kid this was my favorite movie to go over to my grandmothers house and watch on her VHS. Had me thinking gymnastics was it's own martial art style lol.
Woke up late yesterday and I didn't make breakfast so I saved your video to watch today. The highlight of my weekend is normally watching your video and making breakfast for the fam bam😆 have a good week dude 🤘
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! What was for breakfast?
Great review. Either way this film is super nostalgic for me. The conveniently placed gymnast tools only makes it better cause Kurt Thomas was literally a bad ass of 80's gymnast. Still love this movie till this day!!!
Instead of John Cabot, they should have named his character Jim Kata.
I remember watching this movie with my brother and practicing the pommel moves on the arm of my parents couch. Gotta love the 80’s.
Thank you for doing this movie, I've been waiting for this one for a while. It really is a great one.
Omg LMFAO. Just when I think ur video's can't get any better, you as always proved me wrong again. This was great, needed a laugh.
I'm so glad! This one was a ton of fun to watch.
@@RedEyeReviews just a question. Have you ever tried any "Bollywood" movie's?? Lmao. There is some good, funny one's. If u want any ideas, check out channel called "Corridor crew". They react to the best one's. Either way, what ever you do I enjoy everytime. Have a great day.
Dude I love Mel Brooks and I'm glad that you (probably) do, too. Another great vid. Caught this on VHS at a party in high school a while back. Hilaraious. Fav part is when the handler gets the arrow. Just, out of nowhere.
Mel Brooks is one of my all time favorite directors. I just finished his autobiography and it made me love the guy even more
Richard Norton is an action movie legend
Fun Fact: This movie helped inspire Resident Evil 4 with the crazy townspeople aspect of the game.
Hey, my daughters do gymnastics. So that means they're top notch martial artist. 😂
I know it doesn't work like that. But the people who made this movie believed so.😂
@@umbrellacorp. Well, they could probably kick MY butt. But that's not really a high bar.
Yesss... You did it!!
You are seriously looking into my mind’s eye with your movie picks! Love this movie & your reviews.
