    I wish I'd had the foresight to save my Dad's '69 Fury WSP car. It made it to the mid 80's then was parked and sent to the crushers. Regrettably. The persuit 440 which had been long replaced by a 383 2bbl, went to my 68 SuperBee. I saved the front frame for a 51 Dodge pickup project which was never finished...ugh!

      Don't mind if I do. Haha. Yeah, definitely. The leaking well plug thing has become a big problem over the years. The epoxy slowly fails and then they're just super rich all the time. Same with the warping and cracking main bodies. The older they get, the more heat cycles, etc. I really like Thermoquads in general, once they're brought back to decent working order.

    After VERY CAREFULLY reading your well-worded and useful description, I got comfortable, poured a drink, and watched the Directors Cut of "1973 Dodge Polara 440 Washington State Patrol Car!" I was enraptured. When you showed the timing sticker that is too damaged to read, I almost cried and could not turn away to see how it would turn out. When you finally drove the car, you were full of swagger and life without over-doing it like Logan Paul would have done. The only thing missing was a cat. I don't see how you can make a TH-cam video without having a cat in it. If you need a quote for the dust jacket of the DVD, here it is: "I modern and compelling twist on the ever-present theme of Man and Machine. The character of "gasket that probably needs repair" will surely win an oscar. The film made me walk out my door and hug my Crown Vic, telling it that I don't mind after all that it is not a Dodge.

    • @baerster
      @baerster ปีที่แล้ว

      But seriously, great video! I thought the 440 Polara police cars were among the fastest cop cars made up to that time, is that true? I understand that you didn't have time to make that car perform as well as it could, and I look forward to seeing how fast it will be. I wonder, though, if by 1973, even cop cars were slowed down by smog requirements.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve been making TH-cam videos for a year and a half, and not *once* has anyone bothered to bring the primary reason for my lack of astronomical success to my attention - until now. I have featured cats in *some* videos, but I see now that I am really leaving something on the table by not featuring them in *ALL* videos! I can’t quite put my appreciation for this advice - and, indeed, a glowing review - into words properly at present, (perhaps due to a distinct lack of caffeine in my blood stream,) so I will instead leave you simply with… Meow.

    Back in 1973, purchased a 1971 Plymouth Fury 1 (I never knew they made anything but a Fury lll) Montana State Pursuit Interceptor. Had a 440, TF & Dana 60. NO power steering, no a/c, huge power disc brakes on the front. The tires were "Police Pursuit" certified. They were rock hard bias ply, rated for 150 mph. Was impossible to parallel park. Was told the Montana State Police didn't like power steering, because the cars were "twitchy" at high speeds. Plus, Montana highways are almost straight shots, anyway. Wish I still had it.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow. That’s quite something. Yeah, the power steering is super vague and twitchy. I prefer manual in most applications. Of course we have Firm Feel now, which is a good option. Very cool.

    Good info on the Thermoquad. I would have been curious to see the dash. up close. It appears to have either a radio delete panel or a dash face that has a smooth face on the upper right. Also, there is an opening for a clock. I was wondering if a clock was in it.

    • @auteurfiddler8706
      @auteurfiddler8706 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some C body info here. The 69 and newer Fury introduced a black plasticy looking dash that was FRONT lighted. They actually boasted about this in the info at the time. It's Dodge Polara cousin had an awful looking two level dash that looked like something from a 68 Galaxy. I don't know if it is front lit. Probably. I've never been able to look at one without getting sick. Apparently customers felt the same way because the Plymouth Fury dash was put on the Polara for 72 and 73 which is the one shown in the video. The radios for these dashes have a unique asymmetric concave black plastic face and the radio wires omit the orange wire since they are FRONT lit from the cluster lamps. By 1973, 5 speaker stereo was available and often ordered in C bodies (and even E bodies) but B bodies only offered two speaker radios.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t go over the dash because Tom had just done that over on his Rocket Restorations channel. He did a pretty thorough look at this car, and at his ‘72 WSP Polara as well.

    There are so many parts of this video that I like, but I don't have time to mention them. (insert personal story here) My first 5 cars were all Mopars, and all F8 green... a color I despise to this day. My father told me to never bring another green car in his driveway. No problem. I was unhappy about the green too. So I bought a '75 Fury ex-police car. It had a 400 engine with a Thermoquad, and it wasn't green. Nope. It was painted an awful tattletale blue. My dad hated it worse than the green, so he named it Mr. Ugly. The moral of the story? Don't put ketchup on scrambled eggs. Anyway, you didn't have time to do more work on that ex-police Mopar, because my story is so long. Speaking of which, here is a bonus story! I had a bad Thermoquad addiction those days, and I fixed my Thermo-bog by hooking up a spare vacuum dash switch from an air-grabber car, to the vacuum pod on the carb that disconnects the secondaries when the engine is cold. I could just mash the gas pedal without brake-torquing, and it would smoke the tires! Just flip the switch when you want the secondaries back in action. I'm cured now, thanks to years of therapy and meds. But, I will never remove the Thermoquad from my lawnmower!

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dang, that’s a quality trick. My Demon’s original Thermoquad has a spring on that arm. I’m thinking it’s a similar theory, but more of a hammer approach… soooo much green. They’re always damn green. Ketchup on the scrambled eggs is a no from me… ok I really want a lawn mower that goes “waaaa WAAAAA” now.

    I wonder if that was the same problem I was having with a remanufactured Carter AVS 4640S carbreurator I bought for my '69 Dodge Charger R/T with the 440. • @DeadDodgeGarage

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve done two E body videos in the last week 🙂 honestly though? They’re all expensive and desirable. I can’t just get my hands on them like I can A bodies and less desirable B and C bodies. And, I used to own a ‘73 Challenger. I really liked how it drove, and I loved the 70s street machine style. But it was also tiny and useless. I couldn’t use it for our family road trips. Couldn’t put my daughter’s car seat in the back. Couldn’t put my cooler in the trunk. Couldn’t really do anything useful. So I had my E body fun and let it go to the next guy. I have a Hemi ‘Cuda video coming in the near future, and more updates on the 392 Hemi swap Challenger project coming too. So don’t worry, there are and always will be E bodies here. Go through my catalog and you’ll see plenty of them. I can’t speak for other channels - I feel like there is plenty of E body content out there.

    As I have said before I actually like the original Carter AFB and avs series carbs not so much the Edelbrock versions of the AFB I have had several issues with them have not gotten to try the avs series 2 carbs, and I like the thermoquad and the quadrajet carburetors and as most people say they are a Rochester design and in several Mopar and gm vehicles and that is actually wrong both are originally a Carter design, owned and then sold to Rochester carburetion company and they patented it immediately...

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thermoquad was a Carter, yes. I wouldn’t know anything about the Quadrajet. I’ve had exactly the opposite experience - I’ve had much better luck getting the Edelbrock carbs working right than old Carters. I’ve always thought they should be the same, but that hasn’t been my experience. The new AVS2 especially is great.

    Here's an idea: what if some aftermarket performance company started reproducing those phenolic plastic center sections for Thermoquad carburetors?
    I mean it's that center section that goes bad on like, well, everyone that I've ever seen that was unusable, especially on the secondary jet well caps. But boy if you find/have one that isn't cracked or broken anywhere, you've got one of the best carburetors ever produced,,, and take care of it, don't let it get water from moisture and let it sit outside in weather below freezing because, well... Ok, I'm done. Lol.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage

      My coworker Evan said someone was, but I’m not seeing them at present. Carbs Unlimited has them listed but no longer available. The well plugs are easily fixed with some fresh epoxy! Cracks and warped bodies… not so easy.

      @@DeadDodgeGarage OK I gotcha.
      Um, just in case anyone was wondering, I once had a T-quad from a Motorhome that had a tremendous engine compartment fire and that plastic center was warped really bad, but I had access to one of those large marble sanding blocks and I just re-flatened the top surface of the plastic center, and after that the carburetor worked just like nothing had ever happened to it.
      I may have just gotten lucky, not sure, lol...

      I can't figure out why no one is making carbs out of a material that is impervious to alcohol and alcohol plus water damage such as stainless steel. I have read that a new 800 dollar double pumpers are being ruined in as little as 8 months. And if you are thinking "just buy e zero gas" well, 85 percent of the country has no access to it.

      @@DeadDodgeGarage I am by no means a TQuad expert but I do know they made a lot of them. With a lot of variations. It could be your not full throttle thing could be a linkage/throttle cable mismatch. The one on my motor home 440 I got off the shelf. My shelf. I had bought it years before for an earlier 440 project and never used it. But it worked perfectly in the 440/4 speed truck setup. Might check those other cop cars in the faint hope there's one that hasn't been dicked with in order to compare.

      @@Ross046 We've got a pile of Thermoquads, plus that really nice one in a box. Tom thought it was NOS but it has some random painted parts on it so I'm not quite sure about that. In any case, I've got lots of source material to go on - but no more time for the car at present. I got to thinking about it later, and realized it's very possible that the secondaries are not opening at all when driving, either due to throttle adjustment or a vacuum pod issue. The way the secondaries work on a Thermoquad is goofy and complicated, and I don't pretend to fully understand it - yet. When Tom was revving the piss out of it to test, it did look like the secondary blades were sometimes flopping open. One way or another it needs some more tender love and massaging.

    Thermoquad sucks. I use holly duel pumper. Had 440 and 400 engines. 1972 and 1973 good years. The 400's crankshaft thrust bearing was worn from to many fast take off. You could move the crank back and forth almost a 1/4 inch. Cars like this will never be made again.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thermoquad can be good when it’s good and the stars align. It can also be crappy and untunable. The difference between the two is some experience and knowing where to look for problems. I prefer the AVS or AFB, but I take great pleasure in getting Thermoquads to work. I’ve had several small blocks with shot thrust bearings like that… that’s never ideal. I know it. That’s why I’m out here trying to preserve these relics and keep them going.
