When you roll a log with the cant hook on the mill, stand on the operator side and pull down on the handle to rotate it. Don’t push up on the offload side. I learned that lesson the hard way after I destroyed a few discs in my back. I’m young and in very good shape, so it can happen to you too. After a year off to heal up, my log pile has grown even bigger than yours. Lots of work for my LT15 this year. Stay safe and thanks for the great content.
25-30 years ago a guy made 6" (might have been 5") diameter lengths of octagon shape lumber from fallen trees. He sold it as fencing in both vertical and horizontal lengths. He sold out fast as he could cut it. People used it like split rail around the perimeter of yards and pastures. I remember he lag-bolted connections but not specifics how it was done. This vid brought back the memory.
I believe he, like most of the other sawmill channels I watch, would say it is fun work. There is a saying, “Find a job you like doing, and you won’t have to work a day in your life!” At least he does not have a lot of physical labor, looks like just moving the spoils to the tractor and stacking the cut lumber. The sawmill and tractor takes care of the heavy work.
now this is what I was talking about that first cut of the logs you just did in this video some you can used them to make some kind of bridge in the mud hole you were stuck in the other day there was some nice thick pieces that could be used for that purpose so what you have to put 4 or 5 layer or more but don't forget to cover every thing with the saw dust the wood will take time to rot if it is totally not exposed to the weather and stays in kind of ground I use my bark even to help elevate some of my road and then cover every thing with the saw dust some of the hole that I did is 6 to 7 years ago and still in good shape enough that my old tractor is not in the mud any more
Nice one Wes - turning out some useful lumber there. Nice to see the Kubota looking clean & shiny after you tried to bury it in the last video! 😂😂 Stay safe & well. 👍👍
I watch each of your episodes ay least twice. I have to say that right now especially, i wished i was in your shoes and had more logs than i knew what to do with.
With the cost of lumber these days and you having a kiln I would be drying and plaining lumber. Creating some stock pile and take advantage you could sell cheaper than lumber yard and still make a small fortune. You will have only one problem keeping enough lumber to sell. I am in poor physical shape but the way the lumber market is right now I'm considering getting back into milling. I think I can scrape up about $ 6,000 or so to invest to get started.

How about doing an update video on your solar kiln. How’s it working for you? What would you do differently now? How long does it take to dry pine, etc? Thanks.
Perhaps. I think there is room for improve the efficiency of his milling site. Build a temporary log deck like he had for his LT10 mill. Make his off cut pile close to the mill. Have the stacked lumber pile close to the mill. Then of course having a couple extra people to help pull off the off-cuts and boards.
Looks like the tractor cleaned up real well...I don't suppose your wife offered to help you with that phase of the tractor mud wallow extraction? Great video Wes, thumbs up.
I’m not saying to do this I’m just saying it will be a really cool idea You should make a Small log cabin with actual wood lumber boards as walls so basically like a small shed I think that would be pretty cool
Do you cut your 2x material to 2x4, 2x6 etc? Does it dry to 1 3/4 x 3 1/2, etc or stay true to 2x4? How is that kiln working out, any updates on that? Thanks again!! Happy Easter! He is Risen !
