They weren't kidding...Reikos loyalty is such an immovable force, there's zero dialogue hinting betrayal
Not only that, but it seems Shao is genuinely proud of and even trusts Reiko a bit. He never once spoke about Reiko's defeats or threatened to punish him for his failures.
@@singingcrow439 Hope it stays that way. Boring villains can't keep allies. Worthwhile ones have loyal allies who fight for them because they have strong bonds. He raised Reiko, so the loyalty makes sense.
Also, this Shao's been a beloved general for millenia. I can't imagine him getting there by betraying all of his junior leaders along the way.

It seems Shao adopted Reiko in this timeline just like he did in the last one (mkx comics). It seems Shao likes being a father figure to deadly orphans. If Reiko survives the taming of Onaga, which may be possible due to Shao saying he has Onaga, maybe we can learn if Shao directly killed or even better indirectly got Reiko's parents killed.
Shao saved his life when he could’ve killed him and been done with it. I’d be loyal no matter what too
If he weren't a villain his story would actually be badass and inspiring. He overcame his deficiencies from childhood and became a highly decorated and respected warrior
He would of stayed loyal as well but titan Shang tsung manipulated events to make him like how he was before
And after his government was incompetent he staged a coup and led his people against it. Pretty cool.

In his perspective he is a hero but to Outworld’s people as opposed to it’s Empire. He’s a freedom fighter
I like this version of Shao. He's still evil and trying to conquer Outworld but he also cares for his land and his soldiers. I have no doubt he would defend it from Havik or Nitara
This Shao Kahn is all the ambitious warmonger that he was previously yet seems to truly believe in his "might makes right" mentality and that its good for Outworld.
I like it. Gives him an interesting level of depth.
He's weak in the past, now he's risen.

@@scottchaison1001 His new backstory is that he was incredibly sick as a punishment for his misdeeds in the previous timelines, but he had and has taken the chance to improve himself and become a general, earning his position instead of owning it in the first place.
This is General Shao, the man with a list of accomplishments so long it would take days for full recitation.
But can he rival KING SETTRA in titles?
Which probably include the time he save outworld kittens that got stuck in a tree

This night be my favorite version of Shao. I love that he shows loyalty to Reiko and, dare I say, a bit of respect. Them sitting together eating dinner at the banquet while scowling at Raiden was hilarious.

He's shows much more nuance than he has last game. I just wish they kept his face properly masked by a skull!!! MK masked character have been having their mystery factor tarnished for a bit!

@GreaterGrievobeast55 agreed. I thought they were going for an origin story and we would see him put it on when he decides to betray Sindel. Kinda symbolizing him turning from general to aspiring emperor but it pretty anticlimactic

4:02 "If we don't conquer, "we" will be conquered." He's actually got the right idea on that one, the idea of the next Mortal Kombat involving Earthrealm's invasion of Outworld instead of the contrary is quite nice, plus it's proven many times in the MKverse that technology beats magic.
Shao and Reiko genuenly sound like bros this time like even though Shao is kinda using him both seem to know and are still just chummy with eachother like its kinda expected.
Honestly? I don't get that vibe. Their respect and loyalty is mutual. They've got a mentor/protégé relationship bordering on surrogate son. That Shao doesn't say jack when Raiden beats him proves Reiko is not just some pawn.
Reiko in this case doesn't mind being Shao Kahn's pawn.
I’m glad Rain has more sense to him in this timeline. He still betrayed Outworld but at least he realized he was wrong
I would say that it is less that he realized that he was wrong and more that he has a conscience that tells him that he did horrible things.

@@TimeLord675yes new timeline, but the whole multiverse thing of time splitting and different keepers of time suggest others' timeline still follow the old timeline lore to some degree

Considering shao you probably have to first kill the chicken yourself in mortal kombat and only then they cook it for you

I love that most mirror matches hint at something greater or have an implied web of intrigue that both characters are unravelling, but Shao doesn't bother dissecting it beyond that.
He sounds like he's just adoring the chance to beat the shit out of himself because it's the only time he's fighting someone he knows is his equal (As far as he knows)
Y'know something funny about Shao's interactions with Mileena?
In a way, he's like the evil counterpart of the previous timeline's Kotal, being an outworld General staging a coup against Mileena.

If you do a Scorpion and Stryker intro dialogue battle, I imagine Stryker and Hanzo getting along well because they had anger issues. Both of them were trained by the Shirai Ryu to control and master their anger.

This right here show that this Shao ain't the pure evil tyrant that he was in the prior timelines. The Old Shao would probably see the Dark Kahns of old as inspirations and would admire them, this one is disgusted by their actions and in the end, all his actions come from a place of paranoia and love for his realm. I hope they do something interesting with his character in the next game instead of just moving him to be the same evil conqueror of always

As far as Shao knows, Bi-Han served Earthrealm before he had his clan betray it (and Bi-Han shows that he has some Earthrealm preference such as wanting to help lead it before power went to his head) while Shao himself was only ever loyal to Outworld itself and never cared for Sindel in the first place.
Shao probably means the fact that he let his father die rather than betraying earthrealm.

- Hanzo losing Harumi
- Johnny losing his $500 sun glasses
- Kuai Liang having the scar and being a badass
- Kung Lao having an arrogant personality

Definitely will, especially since Kotal's chapter in MK11 was where Shao Kahn intially calls him "General Kotal"

It would have been nice to see a more honorable, less self centered version of Shao in this new age. I liked the direction of someone who value's Outworld good fortune above his own ambition. We already had that Shao for like 5 games...
This shao has a very clear difference with shao kahn though Shao kahn only wished to rule and conquer, and that desire was birthed from his own rotten personality. He had no greater goal beyond rolling over everything he could. This Shao doesn't seem to want to conquer all he realms fpr the sake of rule at very least. Seems to come from a place of worry taht the other realms will attack fitst
But m8, the traits you mentioned are parts of General Shao’s personality, he is a extremist nationalist and loyalist to Outworld. Shao Kahn was a tyranical conquered who wants absolute control over the realms.

While this Shao is written better and has a much more thought out backstory Shao Kahn I am actually even more repulsed by him and find it even more difficult to empathize with him. He would have had such a bright future if he could have just kept his own bigotry, paranoia, and ambition in check. Much like Ceaser he was an impressive soldier and tactician with a remarkable and well earned reputation but is a terrible leader and commander because he puts his own wants and desires before the good of those under his command and the people he's supposed to be protecting. He should have NEVER been made a general in the first place. Sindel should have recognized that he didn't have the wisdom or emotional fortitude for the job and paused his career till he proved otherwise or at least dishonorably discharged and publicly shamed him the moment he stepped out of line.

I think Shao values Reiko a lot more than that. He seriously seems like he cares about him as a son of sorts. They have some similar history too, so it would make sense for Shao to empathize with him.
