just finished stoner and my god.... you ll either fucking love it or not vibe with it but if you lovee literature (esp. literary fiction) this book is so quietly beautiful and emotional. i hope you cherish every moment with that loveable man x
I'm about halfway through Stoner -- I love the writing style in its balance of character interiority, dialogue, action, and setting. Love Edward Hopper too.
"I'll Be Gone in the Dark" by Michelle McNamara is an exciting read. Yes, she did pass away before the book was published. A couple of takeaways; despite her exhaustive research and passion, she was not even close to identifying the actual killer (his name could not be found in any of her research notes - thank goodness for DNA). Similar in nature to Robert Graysmith's attempt to identify the Zodiac killer. What I found fascinating in both cases was the desire and drive of both authors in their quests. The stories are well told and keep you turning the page. If you are looking for great true crime or crime-related books, I highly recommend "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote, "Fatal Vision" by Joe McGinnis, and "Helter Skelter" by Vincent Bugliosi.
this autumn i am in the mood for some academic/professor books for sure, i already had the housekeeper and the professor on my tbr, now i am adding stoner to it as well.
I love love love your content so great! And I believe that you will fall right into those perfect fall readings 📚☕️🍂🍁happy reading 📖 to all and to all a good read. Those tiny books tho 🥰
The Fire Next Time is good and was also my first Baldwin. I recently talked about it on my channel and m looking forward to checking out more of his work.
Stoner is a classic and one that all my friends mention and I hadn't read it until recently. The main character teaches at a nearby university that I have visited so that felt interesting. It was an unexpected read because while not much happens, everything that we call a life does happen, as we experience the entirety of this unassuming man's small town experience. A real gem that has stayed with me but I have difficulty describing to others what was so special about it. I also found Wave to be an engrossing read.
I’ve had Stoner in one of my TBR piles for quite some time and hope to read it soon. I love finding little remnants of people’s lives that have been left in books. It’s as though they purposely leave a piece of themselves in the book to let the next reader know they enjoyed the book. 😊
Good to see you back. Yes, Stoner is a great choice for autumn. It’s set at the University of Missouri, early to mid 20th C. I became really engaged with the story and of course it’s a Hopper painting on the cover- how did I miss that interesting tidbit of info when I had the book in front of me. “The Red Badge of Courage” is beautifully written. It’s hard to believe that Crane had not been in a battle. His brother, who had been, inspired the story. I look forward to hearing your thoughts for each book. Yep, I grew up one block from the Atlantic on south shore of Long Island. As a young kid I used to worry about tidal waves.
People regularly leave stuff they don’t want on the curb in NYC. I haven’t gotten any hooks that way but I personally found a really good mirror on the curb a couple blocks from my apartment!
Hi, Anna! Really enjoying your upload as always! As you were saying that you crave stories about middle aged couples, I couldn't help but think about Doris Lessing's „The Summer Before the Dark”. People are having different opinions about the style of Lessing's writing, but I really enjoy the melancholic atmosphere and the character development in this book! Plus I think it's perfect for the fall! Stay as you are!🧡
Ahh tsunamis and tidal waves are also one of my biggest irrational fears and I've also had nightmares about them my whole life (usually about being on a tiny island with nowhere to escape). Never met somebody who shares that fear in the same way before!
I'll Be Gone in the Dark is also a docuseries -- her husband at the time, Patton Oswalt, put it together after her death. Besides the real story, you really see the love he had for her for him to continue her project and lament her legacy.
I recently picked up Stoner for 3€ at the charity shop, a true treasure. I'll be Gone in the Dark is AMAZING and nothing compares when it comes to (true) crime. Hope you enjoy x
Washington, Luncheon in the Fall, immolation in a flying sky tube. Who doesn't want that? Currently reading Bonding (Maggie Siebert) and re-reading (audiobook) The Book That Wouldn’t Burn (Mark Lawrence). Finished All Fours (Miranda July) and it was great. Japan videos were a treat. Love the content.
If you like reading about war, City of Thieves by David Benioff was a great book about two young men who go on an impossible mission through a time of deprivation (recommend for winter), and I enjoyed Generals Die in Bed by Charles Yale Harrison: it's a plainly told account of a young man on the front lines - brutal but short.
Michele MacNamara (sp?) who wrote Ill be Gone in the Dark, did sadly pass away. She was an amazing writer and journalist and her work did indeed lead to finding the Golden State Killer. Her own story is sad and fascinating and her husband Patton Oswald was instrumental with making sure her work was completed and recognized. Check out I’ll be Gone in the Dark, the Podcast, too. If you’re sensitive, dont read it at night!
I usually just listen to TH-cam videos. Sometimes i get incredibly extra ads in the middle. with your videos i truly am not sure if it’s an ad or just a bit without checking 😭🤪 ‘zzlin is my fav hobby
So… do American folks call it “Fall” because it’s difficult to spell Autumn? The only experience I have had with fall books was at 3 in the morning, leaving me with a black eye. I only have my shelf to blame!! Happy reading @AnaWallaceJohnson and thanks for another ace vid. 🍁🍂
You are quite the combination of Beauty, brains..?,and hilarity...Stoner is a gem. You might get your middle-aged couples fix with some Cheever short stories. TY!
a fear-fueled annual deep dive into tsunami videos is the level of paranoia i aspire to
It’s literally feeding your fear it sounds very self destructive
Funny seeing you here
1:28 Stoner is an amazing AMAZING novel. It's the one that got me to read fiction books.
just finished stoner and my god.... you ll either fucking love it or not vibe with it but if you lovee literature (esp. literary fiction) this book is so quietly beautiful and emotional. i hope you cherish every moment with that loveable man x

I just finished "The Housekeeper and the Professor" ... I enjoyed it very much! Definitely a good autumn read as it will tug at your emotions.
ahhh Stoner! I put that off for so long and recently read it. It is now a new favorite.
I love finding things inside 2nd hand books, left by a previous owner.

Yes, Stoner is a teacher. He's on tap for. my fall TBR, too.
When you say “picked up on the side of the road” are people throwing books out their windows in New York?
People regularly leave stuff they don’t want on the curb in NYC. I haven’t gotten any hooks that way but I personally found a really good mirror on the curb a couple blocks from my apartment!
i loved the red badge of courage, very memorable

Ohhhh Red Badge of Courage. It has such a strong place in my heart. ♡
Brilliant book!
Can’t wait to hear what you think of Stoner, one of my favourite books of all time (I read it in winter 2022) 💙
Hi Ana. John Updike's post Rabbit short stories for the well-crafted mid age couple scenario On my tbr list. Cheers!
Wave is one of the most heart-rending books I have ever read. Have a box of tissues ready
S T O N E R 😻 Incredible book. Enjoy ❤

Light years!!!!! I can't wait for you to read it. The writing is indeed delicious. Also it is about a middle-aged couple haha

If you like reading about middle aged couples I’d recommend music for torching by A.M. Homes

Fall is the best time for true crime books, very on theme for the season

i need to know what puzzles you have and recommend

I've read some three books in my life and one of them is "Stoner"
I usually just listen to TH-cam videos. Sometimes i get incredibly extra ads in the middle. with your videos i truly am not sure if it’s an ad or just a bit without checking 😭🤪 ‘zzlin is my fav hobby
I think you would enjoy The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman! It won a Newbery winner award and it’s great for fall
Fall is short for Leaf Fall
@@catsandbats77 oh I know. I was being facetious 😉
The Fire Next Time is so fucking insightful and brilliant, enjoy!
May I ask what camera you use 🥹
No Bradbury?!?! 😯
And for some others: Spooky Season!
Non-native speaker here. What does she say at 4:57
? around with them mentally
“I just want to be palling around with them … mentally.” “Pal around” means to spend time with someone as a friend.
i got the sudden urge to read my books halfway through watching this video lol
Mine is tornadoes, probably due to The Wizard of Oz since age 5😂😂
who is this diva 🤨 (just found my new fave booktuber!!!)
there is something wrong with me.....everyone loves "Stoner", not just in the USA but everywhere.......and it left me totally indifferent....

Longeons and Dragons
What is that song? I feel like i know it

You are quite the combination of Beauty, brains..?,and hilarity...Stoner is a gem. You might get your middle-aged couples fix with some Cheever short stories. TY!

Describing Edward Hopper as bleak is bleak.
I read red badge of courage in college. the only book I liked less was mobey dick and silas marner
should i read a little life this fall?
A James Baldwin book, kinda becoming cliched at this point 😴
