Always amazing to see how a single storm will wreck the entire energy supply in most parts of the US/CA.
Yeah, putting cables into the ground is more expensive, but it's less likely to fail everytime a storm occurs.

I have a similar UPS (APC Symmetra LX 16KVa) We wired one outlet for each office into it in order to keep the workstations up. Then we programmed the UPS to wait until the batteries were down to 10% to shut down the servers / workstations. We can usually get about 3-4 hours of work out of it until it all shuts down.
I grew up on a working farm in Michigan it is some of my happiest memories. we got hit with this terrible blizzard in 76 and it knocked out our power for a week. on a farm if you don't have power to work the pumps you don't have water. we had a lot of livestock that had to have water

I work for a Fortune 500 .com and our backup UPSs are about three times that size, made by Liebert. When we replaced them last year, one of the maintenance guys gutted all the cells out of an old one and turned it into a tool locker. It's still being used. Built to hold that much weight, it's incredibly strong. Getting the new units into the server room was quite an adventure.

$17,000 UPS and no generator. Like WTF; just makes complete sense.
Because they don't want to run a Generator 24/7. The only reason Terran had to use that UPS was because he needed to edit and get something off of the server. No one else was using it. Now if they're posting more than 1 videos a day and a power outage can cause problems with that then maybe they'll get a generator.
That kind of money just to grab some stuff off the server and go somewhere else to work doesn't sound worth it to me. Surely a cheaper UPS could have done the same thing.
Jeremy Crocker the point of it is that it can keep their servers running for several hours, most importantly, their security server running their cameras and other equipment.
@Agihto A solar panel system won't help you much in a storm. I agree that it's a good idea for regular use, though.

lol the timing of this video was perfect. We had a power-outage that lasted an hour last night. Burned through all of our UPS juice resulting in crashes for our network controllers, DHCP, DNS, email servers the whole nine yards. Took us 14 hours to get stuff back up and running.
Watched this while my power was out. Found it very comforting. 😂

Our work UPS is a bit smaller than that, but powers a dozen network switches, 9 servers, phone system (including all desk phones), Wi-Fi, alarm and fire systems, a few lights, and 11 workstations. Estimated runtime, 32 minutes.

For the spacial awareness, He probably got some help of a Guardian thing that let him see his "Play Space" in the vr headset, which is only visible in the HMD, not the PC screen.

Because under half-load you have around half an hour to an hour time.
It also runs servers off off that battery, they are like the lords of power consumption.
That is not what those batteries are meant for, you connect critical infrastructure on a battery like that. your servers and the security system the phone system etc.
The servers that aren't critical you setup to shutdown when the mains power goes down.
if you want to keep going as if nothing happened you need a powerful generator.
What I'm wondering is why they didn't have a little powerfriendly system in the server room to manage the servers and get the files in case of an emergency like this.
the issue they faced, and that needs to be fixed is the room got to hot, and caused the servers to auto shutdown due to temp. all servers have that safety feature, at an old it place i worked at if the server room reached anywhere near 80F all the servers would shut down.
Should have bought a Backup generator.
Those actually cost their weight in gold.
A 100k watt power generator costs about 25k USD, and it's more than enough for LMG.

Because they have a lot of weather, and it wouldn't make sense to invest millions to billions of dollars to try and stop an occasional few hour power outage.

in germay we have a blackout only once like every 3years.
and even a "short" power outage can do huge damage to the industry.
we dont have tornadoes and stuff, but the weather can be nasty as well, like really nasty, people died

Yeah, you probably want to rethink those prices..
I would say 2000-2500 for a good UPS, or multiple UPS one for each server.
Don't know how much a good generator is, but your probably looking at 10-15K for a good one.
Or solar panels? Then they'd also be useful when the power isn't out.
+quadrplax the problem with solar pannels is they are expensive compared to a generator system. And in my opinion less reliable as the amount of power that is generated is dependent on the weather.
Trying to use them as backup power bad idea because if the main power is out it is a high probability it is out because of a storm. If there is a storm you probably have alot of cloud cover blocking most of the sun. So the solar panels aren't producing near enough power to help anyone.
They also use up alot of space.
I also don't know if you can back feed the grid in Canada. or if they will buy back your power you generate.
Basicly I wouldn't buy Solar pannels for a backup power system. A natural gas generator is a much better candidate for the purpose.
However if you want to go all in and completely go off the grid solar is the way to go. But it is still crazy expensive to do.

So you needed a $17,000 UPS so you could transfer a few files to a laptop? Seems like overkill.
You could have a portable NAS for active files, a cheaper UPS for safe shutdown, and then bring the NAS and a laptop to somewhere with power...
Just saying... I mean, I know it's capable of more than that, just that it wasn't used that way.
They move 4K files and videos which they need to constantly upload
That, and keeping the servers running so you don't end up shitting all over the raid array, destroying your work.
They also have their CCTV system hooked up to it.

No they needed a $17,000 UPS to keep 3 or 4 (I forget which) servers up for long enough after the power outage (which probably happened multiple hours before they got to the office) to get stuff off of them before shutting them down safely. That, and powering a laptop.
Still overkill. For that much they could have gotten a smaller UPS and an actual generator and kept the whole office going.

Well, it depends were it is and how bad the storm was. From the looks of things it was quite bad, if it takes out a few power poles or at worse a transformer, power can be out for a whole day. I live south west of England and we have lost power for a day before thanks to bad weather...
We had a power outage like that, but it lasted only like 8 hours... and it happened like a decade-or-so ago.

we dont know what caused the outage, it it was due to dowbed power lines they need to be replaced

For everyone complaining about the expense of a UPS and why not a generator.... There are likely permits you need from the city as they can create a nuisance and you would need submit a request for it that can be debated on but the surrounding residences. This is normal for commercial applications. Also Some cities ban the use of a generator unless for specific applications for commercial premises. LoL. Generators also do not kick in instantly So regardless he would need a UPS to handle everything until a GEN can kick in and you need enough reserves for the GEN to kick on and reach needed capacity. These generators also normally do not produce good sin waves for electricity and can be SUPER expensive for ones that to or an inverter combo unit.

I never get power outages at home, serverroom on one ups lounge on another, then a hole house generator, and that is just for me, one of my customers I installed complete worksite ups with generator hole business generator, it saves any downtime from power. :)

What about getting a generator to run essential systems during an outage? That way the UPS is just used to supply power during the time it takes for the generator to start and take over the load?

hey linus, there is such thing as an emergency backup generators, our auto shop runs off a 30,000 watt generac, runs our plasma cutters, air compressors, mig/tig welders, car lifts, all at the same time.
We want to know MORE about what you do around the office it's interesting :D
This is probably a dumb question. But why not buy a backup generator for a few grand. That way you could power the whole office. And you need only a small battery to keep things going during the change over.

I do power UPS and generator systems up here in Canada for entire engineering departments. Save your battery money and invest in a good Diesel generator. High end (true online) UPS's will filter "generator power" quite easily. You only need 10-30 minutes of battery power to "carry" you through short outages or brown-out's. Modern diesel generators are super quiet. Just use something bigger than a soda can for a fuel tank !!! :)
