    Another great thing that I noticed about the Scharnhorst is that it actually uptiers surprisingly well. Why do I say so? The higher tiers tend to have a lot of large cruisers with big guns. In a higher tier game, you can actually use the Scharnhorst as such. It has guns big enough to punish cruisers, while also having the reload to consistently set fires. Besides, it also has enough range (and a spotter plane) for attacking ships at longer ranges. The only downside of course is that the guns aren't quite as accurate, but well, it's still a tier 7 battleship... it cannot have everything.

    • @hashteraksgage3281
      @hashteraksgage3281 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's also tanky and slippery enough for it to not be focused by higher tier BBs like a Colorado or Kansas would

    • @plektosgaming
      @plektosgaming ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The spotter plane also works well as a makeshift radar. It won't light up everything, but it will allow your team to see farther and behind things. There are many times that I've dropped a spotter plane and suddenly my whole team can see those fools who committed to the "death run" on Two Brothers. :). My only complaint is that there aren't more ships with 10-11 inch guns as 8-9 bounces, and 12+ overpens most things.

    Fun Fact: Karl Doenitz actually proposed the Kriegsmarine should have built a bunch of U-Boats and small surface ships, such as destroyers and torpedo boats, ready to sink the Royal Navy's convoys in case war broke out between the Germans and the British as these small vessels are cheaper to build than battleships and battlecruisers. Karl Doenitz also learned from the First World War that their U-Boats were also really good at sinking merchant ships. However, Hitler refused Doenitz's proposal because he pretty much was a megalomaniac when he wanted the Kriegsmarine to build bigger and more powerful warships than the Royal Navy.

    Actually Jingles (tm), your description of commerce raiders applies to the Deutschland class, not the Scharnhorst & Gneisenau. These were designed as fast battleships (a response to Dunkerque and Strasbourg), and the reason they had 11" guns was that naval rearmament was a huge mess and the Germans didn't have time to come up with their 15" turrets in time, so they went with 11" - a caliber that they had lots of experience with - with plans to refit to 8 x 15" (like the Gneisenau in WoWS). That refitting never happened as they never had the spare drydock space for it.
    Also, when the twins did go out in the Atlantic, the Admiralty had to shut down all convoys until the Germans were back in Brest, resulting in severe disruption of Britain's economic and supply situation.
    That said, I'm loving the history lesson, for the same reason I love his linguistic lessons: a lot of it's wrong, but it's entertaining.

    I love it when Jingles goes on a good history ramble. Although it was PQ17 that got into trouble. Rather than PQ13.
    Its also interesting to read, if Karl Donitz had his way, the Kreigsmarine wouldn't have had the battleships they did. He wanted to focus on building submarines....alot of submarines. But alas Hitler wanted a very visible big gun battleship fleet so thats what they got. I fear if they instead focused on churning out better and more numerous submarines, the war would have gone very very differently.

  • @Julius_Hardware
    @Julius_Hardware ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Actually Jingles, the Kriegsmarine certainly wanted to build a big battle fleet (the Z plan) - because they were massive noobs.
    The Scharnhorsts were built for political reasons due to the London Naval Treaty - the navy for a moment had Hitler's favour and the Ok from the British to build some capital ships. So they built the biggest they could with the money and tech available - so 11" guns as 15"s were not yet available. In an ideal world they would rather have waited, and always intended to convert then to 15".
    When WWII did break out, the KM conducted raider warfare as it was the only choice for the surface fleet. By accident rather than design, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau turned out to be rather good at it.

The Germans came out of that battle fully aware that a slightly better fuse on the British side leaves well over half their battle line on the bottom of the North Sea. What Jingles says in this video regarding why the Scharnhorst was produced and what the British did in response makes it sound like the German combat operation Rheinubung was devised in response to the British stationing battleships and fleets in the Atlantic.
    For those unaware, Rheinubung was the German combat operation that the Bismarck took part in, alongside the Prinz Eugen. It was initially supposed to be the Bismarck, Tirpitz, Gneisenau and Scharnhorst cruising around in the Atlantic bullying Allied fleets and convoys, but the Tirpitz wasn't completed in time, the Gneisenau was damaged by a torpedo attack and later bombed while in dry dock, and the Scharnhorst required a boiler overhaul, as her boilers were found to be in worse condition than anticipated. The Fleet Chief of the Kriegsmarine, who was leading the combat operation, wanted to delay it until either the Tirpitz or the Scharnhorst became available, but the German Naval High Command, commanded by one Erich Raeder, ordered them to proceed on schedule and the Bismarck had only the Prinz Eugen to assist them.

    i do think the turn to the right at the end was a mistake, even if he didn't want to go for the ram - turning left also allows him to get the torpedoes away without exposing quite as much broadside. that said, still a great game!

    8:20 Think you are getting your PQs mixed up, Jingles ol' boy. PQ13 successfully made it to Murmansk with the loss of 5 freighters and one escort, with the cruiser HMS Trinidad damaged. It was PQ17 that suffered almost total annihilation at the hands of the U-boats and Luftwaffe, due to the 'implied' threat of Tirpitz.
    Pretty sure it was 4, not 2, of Byzantineblades team who got more base XP than the Bismark and Nebraska, as both the Gepard and N. Carolina score over 1400 base, as opposed to the Bismark and Nebraskas 1200+ base.

    Tirpitz DID sortie against PQ17.
    I don't know why but it is something you see in a lot of accounts about PQ17, the idea that the surface threat against was largely imaginary and that Tirpitz stayed safe in harbour all the time. Make no doubt, PQ17 was a major screwup by Admiral Pound and the RN with consequences way beyond the loss of 2/3rds of the convoy - but the threat was very real.
    The Germans threw pretty much every surface vessel they had against PQ17 - they sortied 2 major surface combatant groups - Tirpitz, Hipper and 4xDDs left Trondheim on the 2nd, Lutzow, Scheer and 5xDDs left Narvik on the 3rd and their objective was the destruction of PQ17. Things went wrong for the Germans almost immediately with Lutzow and most of Tirpitz's DD escort running aground on rocks. Now the RN didn't exactly know where Tirpitz & Hipper had gone to - but they knew they had headed north, and it was unlikely to be for the scenery (which is beautiful btw)
    At the time the scatter order was given (22:00 on the 4th) the remnants of both surface groups has assembled in Altenfjord, but that is right up at the northern tip of Norway. The convoy was just north of Bear Island at the time and Bear Island to Altenfjord is only about 10-12 hours steaming for the big ships if they put their foot down.
    Indeed on the 5th the entire group (1xBB, 2x CA and 7x DD) were given final permission to attack and left the fjord - heading for the now scattered PQ17, but after about 6 hours the germans lost their nerve and recalled them again.
    It was a major effort by the Germans, they blew 3x months fuel supply on the operation, and it was mainly the very convoluted and cautious command structure for the operation that meant there was not a major engagement between the 2x surface combat groups and the RN covering force.
    Although ironically they ended succeeding in spite of themselves.

    Yes Jingles, before WW1, the French Navy was close to none existent, at least compared to Germany. The entire French Navy had less broadside weight then just the German Battlecruisers. And most of their ships were either terrible, old or terrible and old. So while the Kaiserliche Marine was almost equal to the RN, they were so far beyond the French Navy....

    well there is another spot, why the germans had the scharnhorst and gneisenau used 11inch(28cm) guns. Versailles (WW1 End.Treaty) only allowed them to maintain 6 older predeadnaught class ships, and they were armed with 11inchers. So germany could not build any gun with a bigger caliber (they could remake and improve the 11ers, but nothing bigger)- they had planed to use the 15inch on both, but the war and problems within krupp (the manufactorer) made that impossible-at the end they designed both ship with the idea of swaping out the tripple11 for dual15s asap. But only gneisenau got those at the end of the war. Scharnhorst was sunk, befor they got to that. (by Duke of York- another Ship available in WoW)

    Hitler was never a Corporal. Corporal is a Unteroffizier in the German Army Bundeswehr/formerly known as Wehrmacht
    He was a Gefreiter, which is a Private maybe a Private first Class.
    When i left the Bundeswehr i was an Obergefreiter, and all other drafter Soldiers left the Bundeswehr with that rank.
    Which means, every drafted soldier of today outranks Hitler, by one rank. ;)

    WG always did this ship dirty by making her T7. The Scharnhorst class are most definitely battlecruisers, sure some will argue that by their armor they are battleships but that ignores the two most salient points: 1. They were built to hit a target weight of 27k tons and 2.. German practice was to give up gun size to retain armor protection as much as possible with their BCs when amping up their speed. Could they have built them with 15 inch guns? Sure they could have stripped shore defenses reusing 15/45 from WW1 or just made new to that design but they went with the improved 11 inch because of easier logistics with the Deutchlands . They could have also delayed construction to take advantage of the full 35k tons they were allowed to build and gotten something the size of the Gneisenau in game, 750 tons more armor (think greater than 50MM deck and about 100MM upper belt), and the 15/45 guns.
    Instead they stuck with trying to hit 27k and missing it by 4000 or so tons and telling the British that they were BC's. Now before you say that the Germans called them BB's at home... they could have called them raspberry tarts for the same kind of domestic political reasons. The guns are quite bouncy in game though they absolutely should NOT be.. I remember watching Jingles trying to punch through the belt of a New Orleans at about 70 degrees and it ricocheting all over the place at 10km.
    Thing is we know from prewar live fire testing that at that range and angle they would punch through 348mm of armor. This should have been the T8 BC but WG goes well out of their way to deliberately insult some historic ships

    I don't recall for sure, but didn't the between-wars treaties limit the German navy to 11 inch guns? The German plan was for the 11 inchers on Scharnhorst and her sister to be replaced with 15s as war approached.

    • @jaredthehawk3870
      @jaredthehawk3870 ปีที่แล้ว

      More like they didn't have the experience or industry knowledge to build bigger guns yet. The KM was basically trying to relearn everything the HSF had, including ship design and building. This is why KM ships were rather inefficient in terms of design. Also the Gneisenau in game was what the 15in conversion would have been.

    • @LewisPulsipher
      @LewisPulsipher ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaredthehawk3870 "the Treaty of Versailles, which initially limited German battleships to 10,000 tons and 11 inch main battery guns". Which is what the "pocket battleships" were meant to conform to. In 1935 Germany was limited (Anglo-German treaty) to 35000 ton BB, which is where Scharnhorst and sister come in.

    • @jaredthehawk3870
      @jaredthehawk3870 ปีที่แล้ว

      @LewisPulsipher not quite, they stuck to the smaller caliber as to not to provoke the British too much. The Anglo German Naval Treaty of 1935 allowed the German Navy guns a maximum of 16in. However developing bigger guns would take time (all the data from the High Seas Fleet had been lost), and bad mustache man wanted ships now, so they had to settle for the smaller caliber already in use by the Deutschlands.
