Actually, I don't believe the blade was poisoned. Where he stabbed Maximus was in an area of the lung. So he would have either died from a sucking chest wound where the lungs collapse or they fill with blood.

Yes, Oliver Reed died during the filming. You’re the first person Ive ever seen who has noticed Proximo was CGI’d.
