Paul Weller’s The Jam guitar solos are insanely underrated. They sound like George Harrison in a bad mood going “here’s your f*cking guitar solo Paul”, fucking brilliant.

I think personally the only people who will truly understand Tha Jam, is those who were around at that time. A lot of people say Weller left the band as the gaffy gaffer but he is a man who was in a band and he had to move on in himself. However, nobody can replicate the Jam as a band. Take one band member away and they would never have been the same. Brilliant lyrics, music and bandness. Always in my heart and never forgotten.

    • @Glenn1967ful
      @Glenn1967ful 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

They were big in my teens, but I think by 1982 he wanted to move on and do something different. At least Foxton and Buckler were man enough to know that The Jam would become a parody without him and also the mod revival was coming to an end by then, so they moved on as well. Can't say I liked The Style Council but at least Weller was keen to do something new.

I was always more of a Style Council fan. Of course 'Our Favorite Shop' was the highlight of several years together, and 'Confessions of a Pop Group' was really out there and must have bewildered many of their fans. I read that Weller lost male fans and built up a considerable female fan base with the change in bands. When my husband and I met, he had all the Jam in his collection and now I appreciate how great and influential they were.

August 1980 was a good time to be alive. There were three classic number ones in a row: Abba's 'The Winner Takes it All', Bowie's 'Ashes to Ashes', and then the Jam's 'Start'. And then the kids went back to school and Kelly Marie had her one-hit-wonder.

    LYRICS:
Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold, I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Don't ask me what I want it for
    (Ah ah, Mr. Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more
    (Ah ah, Mr. Heath)
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Now my advice for those who die (taxman!)
Declare the pennies on your eyes (taxman!)
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
And you're working for no one but me (taxman!)
