I remember reading they refused to even try to change their sound to appeal to the American market, and were pissed off even at the idea of it. I always respected that. They reached plenty of Americans with their own style, me included.
If you're American and you like the Kinks or the Who you will like the Jam. And with the way the United States is going it's looking a lot like the British class system.

Yep, I still listen to Weller
The image of Dwight making his Sandwich from TWD is stuck in my head lol

I have to admit I may have played this song a time or two making myself a sandwich lol
Also Mysterio and Spider-Man having a beer..... and a lemonade.
That music had an edge to it, angry youthful, urgent and loud. You just had to take notice. Weller’s voice, the hard British accent, just perfect for the turbulent times. Brilliant.
It was madness lol
Pure genius at every level. Feel privileged to have been a young person when bands like the Jam, the Stranglers, Blondie, the Clash, the Pistols [the list is endless] were the mainstream musical staple diet. Oh how things have changed.

Better stop dreaming of the quiet life, 'cause it's the one we'll never know
And quit running for the runaway bus 'cause those rosy days are few
And stop apologizing for the things you've never done
'Cause time is short and life is cruel but it's up to us to change
This town called malice
Rows and rows of disused milk floats stand dying in the dairy yard
And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk bottles to their hearts
Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry
It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come fast and furious
In a town called malice, yeah
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba, oh
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Struggle after struggle, year after year
The atmosphere's a fine blend of ice, I'm almost stone cold dead
In a town called malice, ooh yeah
A whole street's belief in Sunday's roast beef
Gets dashed against the Co-op
To either cut down on beer or the kid's new gear
It's a big decision in a town called malice, ooh yeah
The ghost of a steam train, echoes down my track
It's at the moment bound for nowhere
Just going round and round, oh
Playground kids and creaking swings
Lost laughter in the breeze
I could go on for hours and I probably will
But I'd sooner put some joy back
In this town called malice, yeah
In this town called malice, yeah
In this town called malice, ooh yeah

“Whole street’s belief in Sunday’s roast beef, get dashed against the Co-op” So British
Dedicated to all the people who were unemployed during the Thatcher years all 3.3 million of them.
Paul Weller was a brilliant songwriter in the Jam. He's wrote some really good songs since the Jam, but for me when he was in the Jam he made songs that your ordinary person could relate to. Great energy, great melodies and great lyrics.

Just re-watched Billy Elliot and the dance montage with Town Called Malice. Forgot how great this song is and what a great piece of film making that sequence is. The anger and frustration of Billy expressed through dance while listening to the biting lyrics with subtly upbeat music and rhythm of the Jam. That's a lot to get right in one 3 minute section of film and they nailed it.
That’s where I heard this song for the first time!
The whole sound track is amazing!
Holy crap that's where I know this song from. I used work in a record store with a guy who loved the Jam, and I always thought this song sounded familiar. Must've been from Billy Elliott that I know it

I can remember playing this as a DJ on my high school’s FM radio station. It still sounds great 40 years later.

Hello, how are you doing? It is nice seeing you here.
Cannot believe at 49 years old Im just discovering this band. Swear to you, here in the states, not a single soul introduced me to this band. WTH man !!! The clash? yes of course the Smiths? Absolutely the cure? decades ago etc etc etc the list goes on and on of amazing British bands I've indulged in but NO ONE introduced me to this wonderful band? Are you serious?I repeat ... WTH man!!! The only song that sounds somewhat familiar is 'that's entertainment' and yet cannot place where I've heard it. Absolutely brilliant song. Ironically, it is joyous in sound but lyrically quite dark. Definitely one of the best songs of all time IMHO. Paul Weller is amazingly talented: not only is the Jam stupendous, his solo work and that on the Style Council are amazing, too.
i agree you mutant
Agree
Complete rubbish, he never wrote a better song than when he was with the Jam. Most of their songs melody was in the rhythm of Foxtons bass and Bucklers drums...listen to all the Jam music, Paul is mostly the songwriter, however the mood of the song is from the rhythm. So sad he chose to be a dick, the Jam could have been there with the greats....instead Style Council was just a watered down heap of sh1t...allegedly because Wellers old man, who managed the Jam, decided Paul was too talented for the others....what a prick!
I totally agree with all you say .Weller is a lyrical wordsmith

Long live the 80's!
You can never get bored from listening to this song. So simple so raw so sophisticated so accomplished
Just played on 6 Music, and still after 40 plus years it stops you in your tracks and demands your full attention for it's 2 mins 58 seconds duration. I don't know how many times I've listened to it - hundreds of times probably, but it never fails to impress. A perfect song in every way - it cannot be faulted. It's a folk song now that has passed into the very fabric of this country (and for other countrys too I'll wager) and will undoubtedly be sung for decades to come, long after we've all shuffled off. If you grew up in the 60s/70s/80s and beyond you can relate to it's sentiment, a universal theme of struggle. Weller has written so many great songs; this may not even be his 'best' song... remarkable.
without doubt one of the greatest tracks ever written. ...ENGLISH AND PROUD

It’s amazing that songs from the past are much more relevant than songs of today. I was turned on to the mod style in high school in the late seventies in Pasadena, California. We got vespas, trench coats, and started ska dancing at Marilyn’s Backstreet in Pasadena, the Seven Seas in Hollywood, and the 321 club in Santa Monica. Those were fun times that I wish I could revisit.
