Can remember learning, as a 9yr old that they were splitting up - hard on the back of songs like this I just COULD. NOT. BELIEVE. that was the last we’d see of them. And here I am, 37yrs later and I’m still listening regularly and a massive fan. Under-appreciated musicians and one of the few bands ever whose lyrics actually matter to me. Just wonderful stuff - track after track of it.
Just played on 6 Music, and still after 40 plus years it stops you in your tracks and demands your full attention for it's 2 mins 58 seconds duration. I don't know how many times I've listened to it - hundreds of times probably, but it never fails to impress. A perfect song in every way - it cannot be faulted. It's a folk song now that has passed into the very fabric of this country (and for other countrys too I'll wager) and will undoubtedly be sung for decades to come, long after we've all shuffled off. If you grew up in the 60s/70s/80s and beyond you can relate to it's sentiment, a universal theme of struggle. Weller has written so many great songs; this may not even be his 'best' song... remarkable.
It’s amazing that songs from the past are much more relevant than songs of today. I was turned on to the mod style in high school in the late seventies in Pasadena, California. We got vespas, trench coats, and started ska dancing at Marilyn’s Backstreet in Pasadena, the Seven Seas in Hollywood, and the 321 club in Santa Monica. Those were fun times that I wish I could revisit.
I couldn't imagine Mods in the sunny California wearing m51 fishtail parkas and mounted on Vespas and Lambrettas, but I'm pretty sure you had good times. I still keep the Vespa and also the Parka. Greetings from Spain
Cannot believe at 49 years old Im just discovering this band. Swear to you, here in the states, not a single soul introduced me to this band. WTH man !!! The clash? yes of course the Smiths? Absolutely the cure? decades ago etc etc etc the list goes on and on of amazing British bands I've indulged in but NO ONE introduced me to this wonderful band? Are you serious?I repeat ... WTH man!!! The only song that sounds somewhat familiar is 'that's entertainment' and yet cannot place where I've heard it. I'm sickened (for missing them) yet elated (for finally discovering them) by this experience. Better late than never I guess. Smh in disbelief.
Iain I’m 51 I loved being a mod in the 80’s Fred Perry button down shirts, cycling tops boating blazers, staypress trousers desert boots and of course the m51 parka memories lol
Saw the style council twice great times then saw Weller at Newcastle arena fantastic show .then my mates 60th at the open air priory gig he was on 2 hours had the place jumping still the best in the game.
Such an underappreciated band, at least here in the states. Catchy enough to get radio play (on the cool stations) but not formulaic enough (thankfully) to gain widespread appreciation among the heaving masses. A truly great Alt band!!!

Deep thank you bro. This is helping a lot.
Same to you my love, you clearly have an excellent taste in music and for that, I like you!
Maybe best trio ever. Driven by Weller 's brilliant songwriting
I love that Paul seller kept the cockney accent!! He’s a gifted singer, reminds me of my secondary school days near Tottenham football stadium.
Doesn't have a Cockney accent. He was born and raised in Woking.
@@SluttChops ok thanks, it just sounds cockney but, then what do I know!!
Paul weller is 100% not a cockney
He’s a northerner
@@oasis4life014 Not a Northerner either. He's from Woking.
it does sound cockney though
that´s because people all over london and the outskirts sounded cockney
Thank God I was around when this epic classic was released. Back when great songs like this were released all the time.
I remember.... "Straight in at number one is.."
Sounds cool, i never knew there were mods in california!
I couldn't imagine Mods in the sunny California wearing m51 fishtail parkas and mounted on Vespas and Lambrettas, but I'm pretty sure you had good times. I still keep the Vespa and also the Parka. Greetings from Spain
Don't forget the Crash Bar on Saturday Nights in Hollywood and going to Poseurs to get gear.
This was a massive hit when I was young. I couldn't stop playing it
Hello, how are you doing? It is nice seeing you here.
These guys are tight and each of them keep this a great pop song. . They were not a punk band but are part of that era and wrote this beauty.
Smh in disbelief.
butHey you discovered them.
@@jamesdotson4458yes well said and agreed.
This really swings! I discovered The Jam just a few minutes ago and it feels good to enjoy this song for the first time, 40 years after it released :D
I was born this year I love it x
@@littlenicola6726 awesome! I always say I was born one generation too late
58 year old Mod saw the Jam at the very start of there time and a few more years later top Band 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Iain I’m 51 I loved being a mod in the 80’s Fred Perry button down shirts, cycling tops boating blazers, staypress trousers desert boots and of course the m51 parka memories lol
Great regret I never saw The Jam. I did see Paul in SF, though.
Saw the style council twice great times then saw Weller at Newcastle arena fantastic show .then my mates 60th at the open air priory gig he was on 2 hours had the place jumping still the best in the game.
I'm 54 yrs old and this so reminds me of high school! Memories...80s music was the best!
64 now still loving The Jam and riding my scooter xx
January 1982. I will never forget it!
Just listen to all the beats and baselines in this song all blending together perfectly even without the singing. Genius.
One of the best original bands of the late 70's punk era, always catchy tunes with a social commentary lyric.Amazing.
This is probably one of the best pop bands that ever existed!
Brilliant music..inspiring lyrics. How can anyone dislike. To my mind it's perfect.
One of my most memorable songs from my childhood being a second generation MOD with the jam tie and bowling shoes 👊 in a town called malice
Such an underappreciated band, at least here in the states. Catchy enough to get radio play (on the cool stations) but not formulaic enough (thankfully) to gain widespread appreciation among the heaving masses. A truly great Alt band!!!
Glad that they never sold out to the US tastes.
heaving masses.= multitudinous swineherd
This band helped me survive high school
@@yvonneclarke9910 Helped me survive life from age 13-16! Seriously. I won't tell the boring story, but if I hadn't had All Mod Cons & Setting Suns.... & when I saw them in Brighton, I thought I'd met God!
Delighted they wernt ruined.
Buckler sure can play the hell out of that. Steady as she goes at all times kit. You could set your watch on his beat. Wow. Underated if I may indulge.
Best lines - ever:

This is so great now as it was then when it was number one here in Britain in 1982 really. Perfection too; unlike alas a lot of music that came later?! Whatever, thank you too!
The 80s had the BEST music. EVER.
Apart from Rick Astley
And Level 42
I agree
Debatable but this song is from the 70s, the video was made later.
Got here from the walking dead. Thank you for introducing me to this awesome era of music. Long live UK

Yeah I think you're right I'm 10 and I agree
it's just called different genres of music and people can enjoy different things
Even Country music sucks now.
I totally agree with you. Today's music is such crap.
The 70s and 80s really were the peak of human musical artistry.
I would definitely echo thh if at but if you listen to pulp es and whizz you busy very well end up thinking the same about the 9@s. Masterclass in lyric writing learned from the best aka the above
The 80s were a bit shit
lol@@barryduff3047
@@barryduff3047 The 80s took a strange detour from a rather immaculate 70s but it course corrected at the end of the decade and ushered in the 90s which surpassed it, and wouldn't have existed it without it so ultimately served it's purpose. There's definitely a wealth of good music that was produced but you're right, there was a lot of it that was a bit shit.
@@bb.buchananactually it wasn’t such a strange turn. But it was a bit shit.
My sister and me were just saying this morning that this song epitomises the 80s like no other.. Brilliant
