    Chrono Trigger was scored primarily by Yasunori Mitsuda, with assistance by Nobuo Uematsu. I saw him mentioning uematsu a lot, but we need to give proper credit to mitsuda. Uematsu only composed 10 tracks, and only because Mitsuda got ulcers by the end of the project (probably because of the overwork)

    Yasunori Mistuda was recruited as the youngest team member to join Hironobu Sakaguchi(game director for the Final Fantasy series as well as this game and eventually will be the company's Vice President) as a sound designer. Mitsuda gave Sakaguchi, an ultimatum: let him compose, or he would quit. And this is the result of his work. He will then proceed to create music for Xenogears(which is his best work yet IMO) and Chrono Cross(another titan of a creation)

    • @Dingisman
      @Dingisman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      He also worked on Xenoblade 2 and 3 (almost out!). I think he also worked on the vocal song in the first Xenoblade

    • @StephenLewisUniverse
      @StephenLewisUniverse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think Chrono Cross is his best work but his work on Xenogears is right up there it's basically neck and neck in a race for me. An underrated one for me would be Xenosaga Episode 1. Albedo's Theme when he is talking to Momo still gives me chills. The music takes a great scene and elevates it up to the point that the scene (and character of Albedo, himself) is unforgettable.

That's the first of three CT songs that made me just put the controller down and listen for a while the first time I played through. The baseline and haunting melody are amazing, especially for a song that is barely used.

    • @grouch_gaming

      For me that moment was first entering the Black Omen... That song, mixed with what I was going through both in the game and in my life... It all hit me at once with that song, I guess.

    • @aeonise
      @aeonise ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@grouch_gaming Heh, that's actually the last of the three I mentioned. Not sure how I just forgot to actually list them on that comment, but it was Secret of the Forest, Time Circuits / Time Corridors / Zeal Theme (depending on the source and translation), and Black Omen. Mitsuda is a master of setting a mood with his music.

  • @Aberusugi
    @Aberusugi ปีที่แล้ว +13

  • @bastardferret869
    @bastardferret869 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    That's definitely the right instrument to study Mitsuda. He composes on guitar.
    You could say he mentored under Uematsu. Good ear. History has it that his hard drive crashed when the sountrack was 90% complete, and he had to start nearly from scratch He worked himself sick trying to re complete it and Uematsu helped him on just a few tracks (good ear for hearing their collaboration). We may never know what may have been, but what we got was great. As far as I know, Xenogears was *all* him - and is also incredible.
    In an interview, he described that upbeat intro track (Chrono Trigger Main Theme) as the feeling of being granted his dream - to compose his own music.
    Chrono Trigger was indeed a "meeting of the minds," but you can probably look that up on later.
    Probably my favorite soundtrack of all time, for personal reasons.

  • @ImAFutureGuitarHero
    @ImAFutureGuitarHero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    57:52 The clanking sound in that track is actually sampled from a Korg M1 (synthesizer manufactured from 1988 to 1995, well within the time period of the development of Chrono Trigger), using patch 95 "Rhythm". The sample used in the game is heavily compressed to make it fit on the cartridge along with the rest of the sounds.

  • @LancerkingNoel
    @LancerkingNoel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    First track there's a thing I have mentioned on other videos that goes unnoticed.
    The piano sound that comes after the clock makes a Low to High to Low effect. But if you are using headphones (or a dual stereo) you can notice that it also goes Center to Left to Center to Right to Center sound movement. The movement that is done in your head with your ears is drawing the infinity symbol, which is a nice easter egg on a time related game

    I remember a lot of this game's soundtrack was A major or harmonic minor, it used lots of fretless bass, and it ran at 60/120bpm in keeping with the game's time themes. Everyone else just heard MIDI music, but to me it was an orchestra... Not bad for up to only eight instruments at once!

    Supposedly, Mitsuda composed this soundtrack by trying to almost fall asleep and using whatever melodies came to him in his dreams and/or drowsy subconsciousness. This process was so exhausting that he took ill and Uematsu had to finish the job.
    Far be it from me to condone risking your health for your art, but at least it was worth the effort!
    Oh, and this soundtrack used to be a _huge_ influence on me back when I played bass.

    I think the destroyed world themes uneasiness was intentional. All through the games story there was a sense of magic and wonder and the music reflects it, and the destroyed future is so eerie and somber that even the music seems to be corrupted

    13:40 I think it's actually not too crazy except for the 2nd chord (F minor 7) and the last chord (some sorta E flat minor sus thing). If we put the tune in Aflat minor (a key with 7 flats), the chord changes for the 2nd half of the tune are all diatonic - F flat major 7 (VI), E flat minor 7 (v), C flat major 7 (III), F flat major 7 (VI), E flat minor (the weird sus one, but essentially v acting as a sorta dominant bringing us back to A flat minor). the 2nd chord (edit: of the entire tune, not the 2nd half) is weird but is a recurring chord change throughout the game, for example as previously heard in the 2nd track of this game (when it was up a half-step and we had A minor to F# minor). not sure what thats called exactly, maybe modal mixture or somethin? i dunno (edit: probably not modal mixture, maybe like a #vi but probably best to think of it non-functionally, like just a parallel minor chord in a foreign key)

    39:48 One thing I notice in Slight Light is how it utilizes the James Bond theme's chord progression (it's especially apparent at 40:18, I believe it is also used in Flying Battery Zone in Sonic 3 and Knuckles). It's the chord progression that goes from C to D to D# to D. I'm not a music theory guy so if I said anything that's textbook incorrect please correct me in the comments.

    It's funny you refer to the meeting of the minds here - Chrono Trigger had what Square dubbed "The Dream Team" and even had an ending dedicated to them referred to as the Dream Team ending:
    Hironobu Sakaguchi - The creator of the final fantasy series
    Kazuhiko Aoki - Assembled the team who worked on Chrono Trigger and has a few other design credits to his name, specifically Final Fantasy 3 and 4
    Yūji Horii - The creator of Dragon Quest
    Nobuo Uematsu - Who was known for work on Final Fantasy (though not to undersell Mitsuda's work on Chrono Trigger because... well dang)
    And Akira Toriyama - The creator of Dragon Ball
    Toriyama's work is VERY apparent if you look at the anime cutscenes that were produced or just about any of the concept art

    12tone did an excelent breakdown analysis of the approach Matsuda used throughout CT. You noticed it several times, where the direction and key kinda seemed "all over the place" a lot of the time. 12tone referred to it as "Non-functional Harmony", where it breaks the standard conventions of chord progression to create specific moods. Like the "aimless, floaty" feel of Secret of the Forest, by disregarding the typical stable > unstable > resolution > stable cycle. Instead, he sort of had two separate keys semi-overlapping and each doing part of the cycle, but not quite the whole thing. So it seems all stable > unstable > stable > unstable but never with any clear resolution.

    I’m late for this but I’m glad to see it, I was waiting for this. One cool thing about this soundtrack is how man of the major story tracks are connected by certain melodic elements, I also love how some of the songs make me feel like I’m flying, no spoilers but you’ll understand if you play it. The nonfunctional harmony someone else mentioned is really interesting too, it makes the songs unpredictable the first time you hear them. New suggestion, check out the Super Metroid soundtrack, it’s very atmospheric.

    Two trivia about this OST which may interest you:
    1. Chrono Trigger was the first game for which Yasunori Mitsuda was the composer. Before that, he was a sound designer and he also played the bass, which explains both the very thoroughly designed sound font and the care he took composing the bass lines.
    2. He fell ill for overwork while composing the OST and a substitute was called to compose some of the tracks. This substitute was named... Nobuo Uematsu! In particular, "Silent Light" is a Uematsu composition.
    2bis. Also listen to "The Mines of Narshe" from FF6 (an OST you definitely need to listen to) and see how its structure is very, very similar to "Silent Light"...
