The best way I can describe Uematsu's ps1 work is that it's like the musical equivalent of trapping Tony Stark in a cave and then he builds a mech suit out of sheet metal and scrap. What he did with such limited tools is just incredible. Janky old MIDI samples that would make you wince nowadays in lesser hands, in his, rock just as hard as they did in the 90's -- because he's just that skilled of a writer.

If you'd like a basic explanation of the "SeeD" track, it plays whenever the party is being briefed on their latest mission. It first plays when we meet Headmaster Cid, who gives us a brief overview of the physical portion of the final exam before we leave the academy. It also plays on the landing boat your team rides in order to get to their intended target (Balamb is on an island roughly in the middle of the map, in the northern half of the map), where the field commander gives us the details of the mission - the "Republic" (read: People's Republic - ergo, something akin to China) of Galbadia has invaded the nearby Dollet Dukedom for unknown reasons, and along with 9 professional members of SeeD 4 teams of students are being sent in to drive the Galbadian forces out, although the 9 professionals do the brunt of the work. The goal of this 'exam' is to judge both the ability of the students in combat as well as their capability of fulfilling their assignments to the specifications laid out by their superiors (which, if you know anything about the military, is so that the different squadrons work like a well-maintained machine rather than having groups of rowdy cowboys running around doing whatever they think is right and getting in each others' way), which is why the captain of our squad fails the exam while we and our squadmate pass, as it is the squad captain's responsibility to make sure orders are followed correctly, not ignored for opportunities of fame and glory. I could talk HOURS about FFVIII, but I'll leave this off here. If you have any questions about any other tracks, let me know.
FFVIII is my favorite OST, period. I absolutely love the main title track "Eyes on me". The story behind the making of it, the central theme of the love, the Leitmotif of the melody of eyes on me in many many tracks cements it as one of my favorite gamnig track... and the game has so many other bangers. The amount of quality tracks and the sheer quantity (and variety) of them makes me easily recommend the FFVIII ost whenever i can.
What i feel is even more epic than the music itself is how well is implemented in the game. If you just listen to the osts they are great! But as a player you notice how all of the other sounds (Menu sound effects, swords, punches, guns) all become part of the OST and increase the immersion for the player. And it's crazy cause its all well thought to match the pace of an average player. Some parts of the tracks most people will associate with summoning, or attacking, maybe taking hits. It's insane.
Absolutely this. There are times when listening to Man With a Machine Gun my brain autofills the summon sound effects and even in Don't Be Afraid, the Renzokuken triggers hitting as well
Not only the battle music though, other pieces like Roses and Wine directly brings up the imagery and words of Laguna and Julia. It's a beautiful soundtrack, enhanced by the context of the game.
I love this game. It had the undesirable job of following up the global phenomena FFVII and instead of playing it safe they respectfully chose to get weird with it. This is a game that inspires a fiery hot passion. FFVIII does so much right and it has some massive missteps however there are no other game like it in the series. Right it's probably been said already or something, perhaps later in the live's chat. But 7:40 , it's the theme for "Balamb Garden University" the Garden part here mostly reffer to the fact that it's an university to raise "SeeDs" of hope and the future. It's meant to raise elite soldiers that would fight and defeat Witches that can basically dominate the world. All in all the garden part doesn't have much to do with the ost more so than the "university" part, as, it's clearly a very university part, specially the start that goes like a school bell ringing of sort. People hate on blue field, but honestly its a great ost, specially some remixs of people adding in wind and stuff in the back. Its really an ost of traveling accross the lands of fields upon fields. Aaaah yes. SeeD. Such an amazing ost. One of the only FF ost to give you such a strong militaristic, briefing vibe. You're in on your first mission as a new SeeD recruit. And you're beeing given a briefing on the comming mission. It's not something big, but not small either. (Gonna update this on the go/after sleep(and therefor finishing to watch this xD))
1:14:37 "Dance like a muppet" is literally what the mob (Funguar) does when first time we hearin' this in game, damn such a coincidence. Man with The Machine Gun is the best.
There are a few themes that Nobuo borrows and re-uses. If you listen to the FF9 tracks after these, you'll find quite a few impressions on Blue Fields in there.
I can’t wait for you (hopefully, one day) to get to FFXIV. The banger “Answers” is very reminiscent of “Liberi Fatali” and “One Winged Angel” from FFVII. It’s the epic choral number of the first expansion and the vocals are insane.

Are timestamps back?!?!?
Omgosh. Thank you so much for letting me know! Who knew music theory might be so dangerous.
You should really check out Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age. It is probably the most underrated score in this entire series and one of the very best.
I know nothing about music composition and I can't carry a tune if my life depended on it but I really enjoy these videos.
Aww, my favorite FF!
I wanted to have my handbell choir in High School to play Balamd Garden so badly, but couldn't convice the director to do it.
Dan letting Man With the Machine Gun loop UwU
The relation between aeriths/aeris theme and balamb garden is love, peace. A time for pecae, and intensions are good.
I love how you started talking about rithm and melody. But you finished just enjoying the great music!
1:14:37 "Dance like a muppet" is literally what the mob (Funguar) does when first time we hearin' this in game, damn such a coincidence.
Man with The Machine Gun is the best.
My first Final Fantasy, my first love ❤
1:16:54 The song you're thinking of is Popcorn. th-cam.com/video/OSRCemf2JHc/w-d-xo.html
Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec, in the opening, is all that's not Latin. It's actually anagram for "Love" and "Succession of Witches".
Awesome! I've been waiting to see you listen to this game's OST for months.
_(best part of the game)_
I've found a new home. Double geekiness with music and FF. Great combo
There are a few themes that Nobuo borrows and re-uses. If you listen to the FF9 tracks after these, you'll find quite a few impressions on Blue Fields in there.
You were the sincapation in my day.
I can’t wait for you (hopefully, one day) to get to FFXIV. The banger “Answers” is very reminiscent of “Liberi Fatali” and “One Winged Angel” from FFVII. It’s the epic choral number of the first expansion and the vocals are insane.
Funny enough, I actually learned of music from the Final Fantasy series through the Black Mages, and thus started my love for the series. Hearing the Black Mages versions of the battle themes just immediately brought me back. I love this.
favorite game of all time here. I LOVE how multilayered each and every track is. Uematsu really wanted to go all out with the new tech available in the game and it shows
Seed is the special forces unit your main character is in. Like Soldier from ff7 or Avalanche.
Great video! I think your poll has some bias as those who would tune in and listen to 8 would favor 8 over 7. You would get similar results if you asked about 6 or 9 during a listen to those games' soundtracks. 8 has an AMAZING soundtrack but my personal order of favorites is FF7/Remake (Both hit the same way for me), FF6, FF9, and FF8.
Been waiting for this since the ff7 reaction. Very nice!
Liberi Fatali was actually playing in the Olympics once.
Ah great stream, that really takes me back. On to Part 2!
