    There is no problem with the video, This is an advanced practice of developing calm abiding and describes not only the path but also what happens at different levels of concentration. If you have a teacher ask them to explain..

    From the explanation given Jesper's link:
    "At the last, eleventh, stage, the meditator is sitting on the elephant's back holding a sword. At this point the practitioner begins a new kind of meditation called 'higher vision', or insight meditation with which he seeks to realise the nature of reality."
    So I don't think the title is implying Samatha is the be all and end all. The story is clear that S is merely a preparation for the Big V, itself being only a part of the path to the Big N :-)

      S - Samadhi(Natural breathe Concentration Meditation), V - Vipassana(Insight Meditation) , N - Nirvana

    I think it's OK. The end point of this video *is* the beginning of Vipassana. The title -- and the story being told -- is not of a person reaching insight. Its merely someone reaching a calm abiding *from which* to begin working on insight. The whole apparent dichotomy between samatha and vipassana is one I've found very confusing. This is one of the best explanations I've seen.

    I don't think it does symbolize enlightenment. It symbolizes calm, tranquility which can help us towards, but is not in itself, enlightenment. We then need a second animation to show what he does next. That -- what he does next -- is the progress to insight (to vipassana) and, eventually, to enlightenment. This animation is showing only the samatha part.

    Not sure. By "defilements" you mean the kleshas, yes? If so, I interpret the monkey as something more general -- really just whatever the heck it is that makes it so dang hard for me to stay tranquil while sitting on my cushion! :-) Maybe that is the defilements, but I always assumed that those -- and in particular ignorance, attachment, and aversion -- are what we overcome as we progress towards vipassana, but which we do *after* the preparation (samatha) represented by this animation.

    riding an elephant is sorta what vipassana is like but...

  • @uilium
    @uilium 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    What happened to Vipassana or Mindfulness? I'd like to know how Samatha alone(as the title implies) can lead to enlightenment because that would be so much more fun and easy, right?

    Yes but, vipassana is a path also...why is the monk riding on a white elephant(symbolizing enlightenment) in the pathless sky?

      @tensofsumos5760 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      white elephant represents calm and restrained mind.. not enlightenment.

    That link looks correct but some embedded unprintable characters have gotten into it and it breaks. You are taken to the blog, but to an error page. Here it is again, hopefully without the characters:
    sunyatanamaskara.blogspot.dk/2011/02/path-of-samatha-meditation.html
    If that still fails, just click on the blog title when you're on the error page to go to the blog's main page and you'll see a link to the post in question, on the right under "Popular Posts". It is a good post!

      1:10 Access concentration. (Hooked on to the mind with coarse engagement)
      1:30 First jhana.(the five hindrances fully transcended in the vanishing rabbit)
      1:38 Second jhana (Refined engagement and sustained awareness on the meditation object. Monkey agitation fully left behind)
      Third and fourth rupa jhanas relate to the rest of the journey towards the cave.
      The darkness of the cave represents the formless arupa jhanas. Infinite space. Infinite consciousness. Nothingness. Neither discrimination nor non discrimination.
      Hope this helps you to make sense of this lovely animation.

      @@AndyMossMetta hmmm interesting. I had gotten to "access concentration" about a year before I made that comment; using candle. Very strong. Made me a beast in the gym :D. After the cave is the rainbow referring to "rainbow body"?
      Another question does it refer to reaching immortal states of consciousness beyond the bodymind that rebirths?
      Although in the past 2 years I learned more. Some people would argue the first dhyana alone hasn't been achieved by anyone public in a long time. An argument of Very 'hard' dhyana classification that basically implies once you enter there is no getting out of. So you have to enter fully body and full mind. Its a full vehicle transformation and requires incredible energy and extensive development - just for the first dhyana. A point of view I tend to favour towards.
      Momentary/access/absorption concentration are modern terms after all...

      @@rohanofelvenpower5566 With respect to the end of the animation it is best that you seek out a qualified teacher. My own spiritual practice is admittedly immature.
      This animation is very profound. What i will hint at is that the ending relates to the permanent disempowering of the afflictive obscurations at Arhatship.
      Yet even then there is the further need to transcend the very subtle latencies relating to the cognitive afflictions. Thus you will note in the animation that the man (he who is enlightened) and the elephant (mind) float separately for a time before coming back together again. The rainbow shines forth from the vajra of wisdom. It is not therefore the transcension of our flawed view of personal identity that frees us completely from samsara. There is something more.......A vehicle to transfer over to.....a deeper insight to be made.....

      @@AndyMossMetta yeah, very likely and sound. I am more familiar with hindu and daoist systems and terminology. By hindu point, arahantship would be self-realisation and chi kundalini domain or sambogakaya thinking and living in; also called yangshen in taoism - the beginning of immortality in it's full technical sense. and full buddhahood is liberation and para kundalini or dhamakaya full embodiment. in daoism this highest is equivalent to Wuji and breathing the highest pure breaths. Actual non-duality (liberation domains/realms/tattvas). some hindus describe it as realizing the full sun vs being realised as a single ray of the immortal 'existence'/ISness
      so yes, more to do afterwards. self-realisation still being limited even if immortal (still subject to 'maya' in a hindu lineage I like, Kashmir Shaivism) whereas liberation is proper infinity, eternally.
