This channel is such a lifesaver. I've got a repair manual too but these videos always really help all the part names and visuals come together so that I can confidently understand what's going on before I start a procedure. I've bought a few 1A parts over the last couple of years since discovering this channel, as well, and they've been great parts for better prices than I find anywhere else! Thanks for making these great resources to go with the retail element, makes all the difference!
Happy to see a video like this on TH-cam. I'm mechanically inclined enough to figure it out by myself, but knowing what to expect ahead of time makes it easier. Replaced the right front hub in about 45 minutes from floor jack to test drive. Thanks for the part and the video.
I changed out my hub/bearing using this guide and it went swimmingly !!! A thousand thank yous. I even told my know it all mechanic/engineer friend about the trick of pounding on the bolts once they are backed off a bit to free the old assembly. We were talking about it cause and he said he did his recently and it's "simple" .He acted like he knew that trick, but I caught him in a lie because my other friend helped him do his and he fought hard trying to get it apart with hammers and chisels. Ha
Figured it out. I soaked it down with rust penetrant, left it over night and beat the hub with a small sledge. Took quite a while but finally got it off. Thanks for the great videos.
Hot damn, thanks for the tutorial! My three hub bolts were seized like all hell (broke an extension and a few adapters), but I couldn't have gotten it done without your vid!
Just want to back up what everyone else says - THANK YOU! Your videos are great. They make the job appear far less daunting than what I always think it will be. I'm going to tackle my hub right now and hopefully save a few hundred bucks. I had one side done two years ago at the Ford dealer - 250 for the part, 250 for the labor! I just went and got the hub for $160 - Not Motorcraft, but, that's all I can afford. I'll report back when I finish.....
Lately I've been hearing a little squealing while driving and I'm about to do front ball joints so that would be the best time to do the bearings. This video just showed me how easy they should be. Thanks!
Dude! This info is worth its weight in gold! (Or in my case the rusty chunks I chiseled off after I bathed my rusty beach truck parts in the pb rust remover with my great grandfather’s 24oz ball peen and a retired wood chisel that is very obviously no longer woodworking (always a woodworker, Might just the wood 12:1412:14 working as a hobby these days)🙏amen and thank you my brother
Excellent video man! Just bought (2) Timken assemblies for my 97' 5.0. For you being as professional and knowledgable as you seem, im surprised you aren't wearing mechanic gloves. I got a nice scar from a ratchet slipping off a lower front shock mount and my thumb hitting the underside of the lower control arm. Split me 4 stitches worth open. Been working on cars since I was 10, never once considered gloves, now they're in my back pocket or on my hands whenever im wrenching. Good Vid once again!
Hi there, just wanted to thank you for the great video. I had never done hub bearings before and after watching your video, I was motivated to do it myself. the job for both L and R hub bearings went thru quickly and smoothly thanks to your tips and the list of sockets and tools you provided at the beginning of the video. That list of tools saved me from having to run back and fourth to my toolbox during the install. Thanks again, you have done a great job with this video :0)
You didn't show how to replace the spindle nut, skipped over that entirely. But thank you for the helpful video. Now I know what I'm getting into before I start. Thankful for people like you that take the time to document things for others use.
+Jonathan Horner Thank you for watching. We try to be as complete as possible when creating videos. We are sorry if this step was missed. Thank you for the feedback. 1aauto.com
WTF are you talking about? Just put it back on, barely tighten it, finish up the rest and drop vehicle to ground, then torque to 157 ftlbs to 213ftlbs which was shown. Normally, putting things back together is not important to show, is just the opposite of removal except to know the torque specs. Of course if your original nut was damaged from rust or abuse, it should be replaced with a new one. How to replace with new? Just buy one (lol) ??
Thank you so much for this video. Now we can make sure we are doing things correctly. You do a great job of showing us all the parts and tight spots. Awesome video

I always like stuff like this to pick up tricks i may not know. Pretty straight forward job. How do you feel about anti seize on the hub bolts? Also its great to see someone torque wrench stuff and not just go balls out to tighten things up. Good video.
@567dirt8910 That's pretty funny. I'm glad we were able to help you out. We carry a great selection of replacement parts for your Ford Explorer on our website 1aauto.com; Have a great day!
I want to first say again that you have the best tutorial on the net. Thank you, I am actually in the process of following your procedure on a 2004 ford explorer and I notice that my factory hub was bolted and had some sort of black sealer or glue on the back of the hub. My question is when I put the new one on, do I need to buy this sealer / glue before reinstall? You didn't seem to use any in your video either. My next question is am I suppose to put a little grease on the inside of the hub
Unfortunately the torque specs could possibly be different between the Ford/Mercury and the Lincoln body styles. Your best bet would be to try and call a local dealership to see if they can give you the proper spec.

Any suggestions on how to break the hub away from the spindle? I have all of the bolts removed. The axle shaft is loose from the splines. I've tried heat, beating it, penetrating oil, yelling at it. It will not come loose. It appears to have some sort of sealant (RTV?) behind the hub flange. I even put the wheel back on, crawled under the truck and tried to kick it off thinking it would have more leverage with the wheel on. No luck.
Hello, I have a ford explorer 98. when I turn it makes a noise, you could upload a video of com remprasar pulleys, or you think you, it may be that noise, it does when the weather is very cold. and I hope you can help, thank you very much.
My 02 Expl sprt whistles/squeeks loudly at 20-50 mph. Ford Dealer said I need new tires. Got them-still whistling. Big O Tires said lots of Fords do this & need to replace a welded part for lots of $. Went back to Ford dealer 6 mo later. Same repair mgr said it's the bushings. I've been spraying some of the bolts where noise comes from. This quiets a little while, but need perm-safe fix. I'll try getting the hub(s) replaced. Now to find shop that will be honest to single fem.

Great video. The axle and nut on mine are rusted so badly the metal crumbles as I attempt to clean it. I'm afraid if I break that nut loose everything is going to fizzle away to nothing. Any idea how much more work I'm looking at if I have to replace the axle? Thanks. 2003 explorer 4x4
I have a 2007 Sport Trac 4x4 and trying to get the bearing hub assembly off is a real pain! Blaster applied , smacked , really smacked, put a hydrauylic porta power jaw between the mount and stud bearing plate, beat some more finally 3.5 hours later it finally parted. currently today I am doing the other side and thinking of using a cutting torch on the unit and burn it down to a chisel it off approach.
Cutting torch worked, I washed away about half of the hub (washed away meaning starting the cut from the outside edge the raising the torch tip far enough to see the puddle being washed away. Ford needs some engineers not twisted people,

So I replaced my hub, truck rides quiet now, only thing is now I have a slight clunk/pop every now and then. I'm replacing the same side sway bar link as it was missing one of the four bushings. Could this be the clunk? It wasn't doing it before the hub replacement. Maybe the correct wheel position is causing the link to load bear differently? Thoughts? Could it be something else? Correct torque on axle nut maybe?
Just wondering how long this process takes? I have an '03 Explorer Sport that's making some noise and I finally had somebody tell me what the noise was. I'd like to know what I'm getting into for time, thanks :)

+Big Jetty Jeff Thank you for checking us out. The axle nut should be torqued much higher than 25 foot pounds. From what we could find, the axle nut should be tightened to 162 foot pounds. 1aauto.com
ok theres a seal behind the wheel bearing attached to the cv axle that keeps the dirt and water out from the wheel bearing.it presses onto the the outer cv axl and slides through the steering knuckle where do i find that seal. i cant find it anywhere and its what keeps making my wheel bearing go bad. its like a cv axle output shaft seal or something. please help!!!

Some vehicles do not have a hub bearing assembly so you may need to press the wheel bearing into the hub. Most auto repair shops have one to do this.
@Bullhideboots09 I'd borrow one or buy one. Chances are if you are taking on this repair then you will do more repairs that require a torque wrench.

@itzyomanz Use a larger breaker bar or use a pice of steel pipe to give you more leverage. Apply more pressure slowly until you start moving the bolt.

great video but when did you put the 32 mm nut back on and what foot pounds did you tighten it too?
+Big Jetty Jeff Thanks for watching. The 32mm axle nut should be torqued to 184 ft lbs.
i have a 02 ford explorer replaced wheel hub and it still wirl's i cannot afford prossive of elimination please help

Is this the same process for a 99 Ford Ranger?

ok theres a seal behind the wheel bearing attached to the cv axle that keeps the dirt and water out from the wheel bearing.it presses onto the the outer cv axl and slides through the steering knuckle where do i find that seal. i cant find it anywhere and its what keeps making my wheel bearing go bad. its like a cv axle output shaft seal or something. please help!!!
