There is something so important, I think, about your discussion of buying something and not being disappointed, not being blown away, but just enjoying it. So much of online beauty content is about whether or not something is “the best,” whether or not its better than other things on the market or other things one owns, which really can subtly fuel that consumer drive to chase the newest, best thing. That may not be the intention of the content creator, but the way we talk about products in order to determine whether or not they are “worth the money” is often by comparing them to other things. Of course this makes sense. But I was surprisingly refreshed when you said that you are just enjoying something on its own merits. You’re enjoying both the product and the experience of having bought it. It hit me that this was such an unusual statement, and as strange as this may sound, it was very calming. Just enjoy things. They don’t have to be the best to bring you joy. I love this thought.
I have been marinating on the ways in which I also have felt “dampened” in the last few months. I think that there are some positive aspects, kind of a letting go of desire/attachment, but that can be both healthy and unhealthy. It feels good to be a bit less attached to my work and be more invested in relationships, but sometimes this detachment veers into too deep of apathy that makes it difficult to do anything. I’m looking forward to hearing you touch on this in your check in!
Hannah I have watched you since your no buy year and I always feel grounded by the way you express yourself. I find comfort and normalcy in watching as you weave your way through all the “stuff” put out into the universe by living your love of beautiful things. Thank you.
I hope your move will go as smooth as possible. I can imagine it's a difficult time for you, there's nothing easy about moving in a pandemic. But you do seem to be doing very well in balancing your yearly budget. It's interesting to see how much the shift in perspective we've all had forced on us has helped. Build those moderation muscles girl! 🤗🌱
I didn’t buy any makeup in July!! I actually haven’t bought makeup since April because it hasn’t been on my radar until recently when I got back in my makeup groove. I can relate to the “dampness” of it all. I’ve had no trouble resisting purchases because I just “wasn’t feeling it”. In July my fun budget went to experiences. I received a FaceTime Tarot reading from an old high school friend for ~$22. I then spent ~$40 renting/buying movies online for a girls night with my roommate and a friend (the boys went camping that night). I spent $8 on a nail polish (Essie Good as Gold). The rest of my money went into a small investment account that I started to put my “leftover” budget into each month. I’ve been doing that since April and it’s really adding up! August is my birthday month, and I’ll probably buy some makeup this month. I’m eyeballing some lippies really hard. I did make an ulta order for replacement skincare already and bought myself a very simple t-shirt dress to wear around my sweltering house. I’m probably going to continue a similar pattern going forward. A treat yourself here and there, but mostly trying to keep my spending to experiences and investments.
You know how in weight loss there are non scale related victories like your pants fitting a bit looser or having more physical energy I feel like both of these purchases and your attitude towards them is a non scale victory.
Never boring! Also, your freshly-washed hair looks so pretty all bluntly cut at this length. I live. I'm reminded by your musings of Marie Kondo's note that sometimes a thing fulfils its purpose for us in the moment of purchase. This sits a little uncomfortably with my environmentalist leanings, but I like the honesty of acknowledging that that's just the way it is sometimes. I do think on the whole that examining why certain things bring us joy, and the nature of that joy, can help us temper our wilder more destructive tendencies, so I'm for it. That really seems to me to be the core of the work you do here. The excitement in my life right now is giving my tomcat a little pinch of catnip nightly and watching him bliss out. Priceless.
this was so well timed, I had a cake in the oven set to bake another 30min and then your video popped up! Even though it feels so silly I relate deeply to the joy of replacing a product with a slightly different version of the same thing, my budget has basically been reduced to replacements so that has brought me extreme joy in the past months 😁
Well, you better be proud of yourself, because the Danessa Milky Way eyeshadow is sold out on beautylish from your raving! I wanted to grab one oh so badly to use with my favourite nude super shock shadows or Pat McGrath glitter, but it will have to wait til a restock.. thanks for always being so open, it's been nice seeing someone be quite frank with themself about WHY they buy what they do-- I'm much more critical and spend more time considering what I buy and when because of this series whilst also finding hidden gems!
That DvF blouse is my favourite "inspired by HLP" purchase. A growing collection of hanky tops is getting me through the summer, which I generally dread dressing for...
For the green colour corrector you might want to try the nyx one in the pot. I put a moisturiser on and then blend it in/spread it out into the moisturiser. I think the pot would last you a year and its the same price and liquid ones in tubes. I use it and i'm really happy with it.
I started using the bioderma oil body wash on your recommendation and it has done amazing things to my skin. I have very sensitive dry skin and it’s been so clear and soft since I started using it. Thank you for that!
I've been wanting to try danessa myricks for a long time but didn't know what to get. I got the foil you recommended and the wet dew balm in holy water. It did not disappoint!!! I haven't worn much makeup through quarantine but i could put both of these on every day just for fun
I'm moving soon too! Two days to be exact, and I feel you on loving beautiful things to a fault. I love my things until I move again and realize how many things I own and loving to acquire vintage furniture is not ideal
I’ve been watching your no buy playlist and it is SO wonderful to see how your mindset with purchases has changed. Thank you for talking through all this ❤️ you inspire me so much!
I also love texture in hair. Lakme curl action gel is one of the best products i've tried to get this effect. I use it on wet hair after wash and don't brush them. It gives this grippiness that creates texture without feeling any product in the hair.
Oh girl I must have missed a video of yours haha, always watch all of them, but now I see you talking about your move going through and Im like "waaaaiiiit a minute..." XD Sending all my love per usual!
maybe not, I haven't talked about it that much! There's really been too much going on and it's happening too fast. But I'll be telling more in my upcoming check-in! Love you too!
WOW! You put into words exactly how this year has made me feel! My passion for everything except my horses has been completely dampened as well, and even that has been cruelly taken from me while both my riding horses heal from injuries. 2020 bites the big one.
I really felt you when you said you haven't been able to get it up for any purchases. I bought a bag recently that I've been looking at for a while and had no mania about it. I was like well I have the extra money this month and they have a sale, I might as well finally buy it. And that was it! This year has really been eye opening to me and changing the way I spend.
If you haven't seen Hannah's How I Make My Hair Do My Bidding Trilogy, its a classic. And she talks loads about the texture shampoo there too. Man, IGK has the best names. I just finished up the "Bad and Bougie" set, which was, if possible, TOO hydrating. As well as the "mistress" oil styling gel/leave in conditioner. But very good for keeping my hair from curling in humidity. I want to see if I can find a travel size of the Cactus Shampoo, especially since it has been so long since I color treated my hair. But I don't want to buy a full bottle if I hate it. And I'm still mad at myself for not buying 1995, if only because 1995 was a penultimate year. I get the need for variety. I love the Bioderma oil wash both in the shower and in the bath because I have super dry skin and still have to use oils (and maybe also lotion) out of the shower. But I am weirdly craving some kind of lush concoction. I should be clear that I'm not a lushie, but I have been known to pop in for a few bar soaps for my wife and maybe one hair or body product for me, but it is so expensive I find it slightly stressful. Which I find interesting, because I clearly have no problem spending over $100 for a palette or not that much but close for a really good serum, but for a bunch of body care or hair care things, and I'm like I need a martini to recover. Which is probably because no product that comes into my bathtub in a tub ever lasts longer than 2 weeks. But I am craving like one or two small bath luxuries in specific scents that are not my usual drugstore bubble bath/epsom salts/body oil wash. I'm going to sit with it and see if I still feel this way in a week, because I'm not out of any bath products yet.
I have the world's thinnest and most slippery hair...I need that shampoo. Right now. I have to add a ton of product after I wash my hair in order for my hair not to slide out of a ponytail.
Thanks for this video Hannah! In July I bought: 1, 4 nail polishes from cirque colors neon collection and a new top coat. and some nail stickers from etsy. I am very happy with this purchase 2, a pair of leggings from girlfriend collective. this may not have been the wisest choice because I have enough leggings but I love the sunshine yellow color that they were doing as a limited edition and I use the cloth bags they mail packages in as knitting project bags as they 3, I replaced my bobbi brown crushed lipstick because mine had started to smell like crayons 4, maybelline raw chocolate, no regrets 5, a hoodie from sweaty betty that was on sale for 70% off. I did not own a hoodie or sweatshirt because I knit and make my own jumpers but I wanted something warm that would be easy to wash and low-stakes and so far it is great. It was my birthday this month and I felt a little sad and weird to be so far away from my family and close friends. I don't feel like my purchases were overboard but the first two were done in a frenzy of really feeling 'my life would be awful if I don't buy this beautiful thing right now.' A year ago I wouldn't have been able to identify that and I put the change in awareness down to watching your videos. Being able to recognize patterns in my own behavior helps me both understand the feelings in the moment and feel less shame about it afterwards. Thank you for continuing this aspect of YOUR work in the world! Your channel has really helped me. :)
I feel like I have lost a lot of passion for makeup, what with not wearing it hardly at all through lockdown, and now only doing concealer and eyes with wearing a face covering. Also, the releases haven't done it for me. I did buy two palettes this year and sold them both, and other than that I have only bought a couple of blushes, and a repurchase of a lipstick and things like mascara and brow gel. I've been just as much into my skincare and purchasing nicer bathing products and a few perfumes... I may aswell smell great, right?
I just love your channel and videos so so much Hannah. Thank you for all you do!! Also, so GREAT to see your birthday earrings making a lovely appearance today!! Take care, hugs to you, Joe, and of course, Miss Sadie.
Was totally convinced to buy this cactus shampoo from your previous video mentioning it. Excited to hear about your new move/adventure - hang in there, change is super hard. I stalked IGK and R&Co and they're made in the same place and have super similar packaging. Because I'm a nerd...the ingredient is dia-tom-a-shus earth. It's crumbled rock with lots of silica based diatoms, which are beautiful unicellular microalgae. You'll see the diversity in their forms if you google them, pushes up nerd glasses here.
I really enjoy your videos, they're a breath of fresh air in the TH-cam beauty community. Its encouraging watching others who are also trying not to spend just to spend. I forgot are you including your workout clothes that you have been replacing into your yearly budget or because you needed them replaced as separate?
These videos are so helpful Hannah. I know exactly what you mean when you describe that maniac feeling of wanting to buy stuff. It’s such a good thing to be reminded of as I am feeling the monster rear it’s ugly head lately. Have you said where you are moving? Did I miss it??? X
So excited to see the earrings back! My most recent replacement is primer and the VDL lumilayer primer is on its way to my house right now ☺️ so excited to try it this week!
Okay- I’m coming here to say this NOT to make a pedantic correction, please stay with me- the stuff in the shampoo is diatomaceous earth, and here’s why I am telling you: DIATOMS! They’re so beautiful! Google them. I think you’ll enjoy it.
I totally feel the lack of passion the past few months. I’m a performer as well and with everything being shut down, my main source of soul nourishment is completely gone. Makeup has sort of taken up that space in my life, so I’ve had the opposite reaction as you, I’ve bought more things more frequently. I’m thinking about going on a no buy next month for through to Black Friday, since that’s when student loans kick back in.
I relate to this (though I've not been a performer for some years now). Makeup has definitely been filling a void lately, and I'm grateful for its soul-nourishing capabilities, but also a little disappointed in myself for having spent more than was wise given current conditions. I'm gearing up for a no-buy too, but I think I need a longer one. 2021 may have to be my no-buy year! Sending you strength and courage for your three-month no-buy, if you decide to go ahead with it!
Not a performer but a student whose uni has been closed since march, and makeup shopping has filled the same void for me these past few months :(( I'm being understanding to myself right now but I'm also due a no-buy session. Best of luck with yours!!
Dear Hannah - I enjoy watching your videos a great deal & I hope that the future changes work out well for you. I was wondering if you did a video about cutting your bangs at home. I have searched for one but wasn’t able to find one. I seem to remember you saying something about it before, (the scissors you used?). I did find your eyebrow dyeing one though! Anyway, stay safe & take care! Stashia
I, too, have felt "dampened" in the last few months. I'm taking a leave of absence from school for at least one semester (likely a year), so uncertainty and my inability to control the future have consumed my thoughts. I can no longer visualize my future, which is frightening, especially as I know I'm not the only one. This must be even harder for people who struggle to keep a roof over their heads or food on their plates. What a cursed year oof
Thank you for another wonderful video! I have been interested in trying a texturizing shampoo, but am worried about hair damage. Have you noticed an increase in split ends or other types of hair damage? Or no? Thanks :>
I want the Patrick Ta blush duo in she's so LA soo badly, but it's been out of stock forever😩 also lately I've been feeling very self conscious about wearing makeup and it makes me so sad. I'm the only one in my environment (family, friends, work) who wears a lot of makeup (not full glam but a full face and lots of eyeshadow) and I feel judged... I own a lot of makeup and I love buying it but now I'm not so sure if I should continue doing so. I don't want to come across as someone who is "high maintenance" or obsessed with my looks. It's just hard not having anyone who is as into makeup as I am, that's why I love watching your videos Hannah❤️
Hi Hannah, really enjoy listening to you. Some sentiments you voiced echoes my feelings as well on the uncertainty and dampening of energies. On the other hand, I am a user of the Atoderm shower oil and was curious on the cream option. Once I finish the shower oil, I may get the cream as replacement too. It sounds nice and can satisfy my need for variety.
I feel thaf my passions have been stamped on too. My bank balance is healthier but it feels like I’ve lost something of me. Totally sympathise and would like to thank you for your help to get through. I paid off a loan today and that is in a way thanks to your work 🌷🍀🌷🍀🌹
Okay Hannah, help! I also have that Danessa Myricks. It has been sitting because it dries so sticky for me? Am I using too much? Not kidding my mobile lid sticks inside and it’s so uncomfortable! How do you get it to dry down?! Heeellllpppp!
Maybe a thinner layer and close your eyes for 1 minute or so while it dries? I've also found that it can be sticky if I put it all over a bare lid, but if I tap a thin layer on top of eyeshadow and let it dry, it doesn't stick to itself.
Serious question here-how much shampoo do you use each time you wash? I feel like a chronic shampoo and conditioner waster. Like I must over use so much it’s stupid. So what is the amount I should use? lol
I'm really not the one to ask, I tend to go overboard with all kinds of products, I think. I use a lot of shampoo each time. But I also have super thick hair.
I add things to charts then the TH-cam watching begins... I watch every review on the products I’m interested before buying them. Sometimes just watching so many videos makes me tired and I’m thinking.. “I don’t think I’m that interested in this item to watch anymore than a few videos.” That’s when I start deleting them out of my chart.
If you run out of green color corrector and want to try something new I would love a review of the Indeed Labs Nanoblur Color Corrector in Green. I believe it's 1oz and around 16-18 dollars? I am very tempted to try it but I've never tried a green corrector and so I would have nothing to compare it to/wouldn't know if it were good!
maybe it's just my browser but it's still showing as "product not carried" for me. A glitch in their system? It looks like they're in the middle of re-vamping the site.
Hannah I was nodding away with you about feeling dampened, and I'm sure you and I are not alone in this. Before the shutdown last March I had purchased a new makeup organization system, made my own creative labels for the drawers, etc. and I was eager to get my hands on makeup and tackle this project. 5 months later the bins still sadly sit, and the makeup got to be collecting dust. It's not a feeling that's easy to put into words, but dampened is good. I think about makeup and applying it, and quite frankly unless there's a distinct possibility of running into my ex while out, I usually have been skipping it. Meh :/
Hi Hannah, have you ever tried the curly girl method? I know you love your current style (so do I!) but your hair texture looks like it could really work for you!

igk's 1995 is not discontinued! i purchased it recently on their website.

I bought the cactus shampoo after watching your video about things you love, have oily scalp and hope it will be good for me. Great video as always!
I have a bath basket I carry to the main washroom so the heathen and barbarian can not use it also known as my daughter and my partner
Lol! This made me laugh. I totally do the same thing in my house! I've got to protect the goodies. 😂💜
😂
:)
The heathen and the barbarian LMAO 😂🤣

So excited to see the earrings back! My most recent replacement is primer and the VDL lumilayer primer is on its way to my house right now ☺️ so excited to try it this week!
I, too, am having a hard time getting it up for makeup lately.
Okay- I’m coming here to say this NOT to make a pedantic correction, please stay with me- the stuff in the shampoo is diatomaceous earth, and here’s why I am telling you: DIATOMS! They’re so beautiful! Google them. I think you’ll enjoy it.
I saw this comment and had to Google it for myself. Wow your so right beautiful and so interesting. I will be looking into this a bit more.
Lol from a permaculture perspective I was wondering if it was DE or clay in that shampoo!
Kind of matches her blouse!!!
"Diatoms are algae that live in houses made of glass." I... my mind is blown. Nature is incredible.
When I was using DE for pet-friendly pest control, I Googled Diatoms & OH MY WORD. Thank you, nature 💚
Hi! Which video did you mention previously in that you will be moving?
Dear Hannah - I enjoy watching your videos a great deal & I hope that the future changes work out well for you. I was wondering if you did a video about cutting your bangs at home. I have searched for one but wasn’t able to find one. I seem to remember you saying something about it before, (the scissors you used?). I did find your eyebrow dyeing one though! Anyway, stay safe & take care! Stashia
I haven't filmed one! I can try to capture it next time :)
I'm sorry you're feeling this way too
Thank you for another wonderful video! I have been interested in trying a texturizing shampoo, but am worried about hair damage. Have you noticed an increase in split ends or other types of hair damage? Or no? Thanks :>
Sea salt spray is a great alternative
Yay for no drama purchases!
We love the Atoderm in the shower - the best and most financially reasonable way to stay soft in the shower.
I paid off a loan today and that is in a way thanks to your work 🌷🍀🌷🍀🌹
Congratulations in paying off a loan
Yolanda Sutton - thank you. Early is what I meant!!
yay for paying off the loan!!!!
Is this the color corrector? sephora com/product/bright-future-color-correctors-P403328
It’s crazy times, my love. Joy is in short supply. This too shall pass 🥰
Hannah Louise Poston you are the absolute best!! Trying this!!!
Your look ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
If you run out of green color corrector and want to try something new I would love a review of the Indeed Labs Nanoblur Color Corrector in Green. I believe it's 1oz and around 16-18 dollars? I am very tempted to try it but I've never tried a green corrector and so I would have nothing to compare it to/wouldn't know if it were good!
The color corrector is still on Sephora!! Must have been a false alarm
maybe it's just my browser but it's still showing as "product not carried" for me. A glitch in their system? It looks like they're in the middle of re-vamping the site.
Hannah Louise Poston maybe try on your phone? that’s where I looked
Dichotomous earth 😂 close, but not quite diatomaceous earth. As in diatoms. Got a laugh out of that one.
🤗
Here’s the link to your Sephora color corrector: www.sephora.com/product/bright-future-color-correctors-P403328?icid2=products%20grid:p403328:product
it's still showing as "product not carried" when I click through :(
❤️❤️❤️
Same on the dampening vibe
💚💙💜💚💙💜
love love love this blouse so much on you
am just sitting here nodding along to everything you say about the cactus shampoo meanwhile, I have a bone dry curly thorn bush of a mane 🤦♀️🙈🤣
🧡🌞🧡
🥳🎉💝
❣🙌🏽
Hannah I was nodding away with you about feeling dampened, and I'm sure you and I are not alone in this. Before the shutdown last March I had purchased a new makeup organization system, made my own creative labels for the drawers, etc. and I was eager to get my hands on makeup and tackle this project. 5 months later the bins still sadly sit, and the makeup got to be collecting dust. It's not a feeling that's easy to put into words, but dampened is good. I think about makeup and applying it, and quite frankly unless there's a distinct possibility of running into my ex while out, I usually have been skipping it. Meh :/
Lol Hannah you are so funny
I really love your videos. Just in case it might help you a little to know that :)
thank you
It's diatomaceous earth, Hannah. Dichotomous means something else. 😊
Hi Hannah, have you ever tried the curly girl method? I know you love your current style (so do I!) but your hair texture looks like it could really work for you!
Girl...you make me spend money!!🤣 Stop being so persuasive, you! 💖
Addendum: the L.A. Girl color corrector is excellent and super affordable. You're welcome.
Oh, and you are super naughty. You are making me Jones for my baby bangs back again! They're so flattering!
♥️♥️♥️
