I've added the game titles to the video description as a lot of people have been asking about this. My apologies, this won't happen again in any future videos!
Everyone always says Star Ocean 3 & Final Fantasy 10 are the greatest jrpg's of all time so I'm glad you included other underrated titles here for new players.
I had the same urge to buy it on the vita when I didnt have one. Luckily I had a desktop when Atlus decided to drop this on June and have been playing it a lot since again lol I played the original and golden is a great addition since it makes the Playthrough seem new and fresh😂
Now that I have it on Steam, I have no reason to play my Vita. I have no exclusive titles for it anymore. I only wish there were higher settings for graphical output as my laptop has no issue playing it. Here's hoping mods kick it up a few notches.
@@Sight-Beyond-Sight there are higher settings beyond the original in the options menu. If you meant higher than the highest then that would have required them to remake the game. I just can't imagine how they can add anymore additional graphics settings without recreating assets. (I wanted that remake too tho.)
10. YS: Lacrimosa of Dana 9. Trails of Cold Steel Series 8. Tales of Vesperia 7. Persona 4 6. Fire Emblem: Three Houses 5. SMT: Nocturne 4. Xenogears 3. Dragon Quest XI 2. Chrono Cross 1. Persona 5
Damn P3 FES doesn't get a lot of love. More a testament to how many great jrpgs there are out there and in the MegaTen series. It was my first SMT game and my favourite so far even though it had some minor issues. It is such a vibe.
My top 10 JPRG's: 1. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition 2. Xenoblade Chronicles X 3. Dragon Quest XI 4. Dragon Quest IX 5. Golden Sun: The Lost Age 6. Paper Mario & The Thousand Year Door 7. Final Fantasy XII 8. World of Final Fantasy 9. Fire Emblem Path of Radiance 10. Ni No Kuni II
I know I’m one of very few, but I love the Xenogears’ second disc; where the characters sit in the chair and deliver soliloquies because you get to hear first hand how the characters feel about each other and what’s ahead of them. IMO, its impossible to improve Xenogears.
You are lucky. Once the tone and gameplay changed on the second disc, I could no longer bring myself to complete it. That first disk is one of my most favorite RPGs. Epic scale! I mean, They had a fighting game as a mini game that was better than a lot of full fledged fighting games. If only they had the resources to stick the landing. Ever play xenosaga or xenoblade?
My favorites are: Persona 5 Royal, Fire Emblem Three Houses, and Persona 4. I feel like it’s very easy to screw up a JRPG. The characters may be too cliche, the story may be complete nonsense, the combat may be boring(looking at you Pokémon), and the side activities may not be worth it. However, P5R, P4, and FE3H are the exceptions that excel in every area I appreciate in a game.
If you are a fan of Pokemon but not its combat, I strongly recommend Temtem. I personally couldn't get into Pokemon ever since my childhood. I never managed to stick to a Pokemon game to completion before. And yet I found myself addicted to Temtem. It's like Pokemon but actually fun. The game is still in EA too and tons of features and Tems keep coming in. The developers are following along nicely with their roadmap.
@@PrinceDolos Once you get it into the hands of a game designer who's target audience isn't 4 year olds, you realize Pokemon's core gameplay is actually really fun. You can see that with games like Temtem and some of the better fanmade pokemon games. I think it's such a shame how Temtem decided to stick so closely to Pokemon's awful story and progression structure though.

My favorite franchise is definitely the Trails franchise or Legend of heroes. The connected worlds and world building is just insane and the amount of depth into the characters and side characters is just insane
Trails series is great for sure but it's definitely not without it's flaws. Cold Steel having 4 parts seemed like overkill. it was milked for all it's worth. 3 and 4 especially seemed diluted and would have been better as one game instead of two.
My top 10 not ranked: 1.FF XII 2.P5 3.Hack//GU 4.Dark Chronicle 5.Tales of Berseria 6.FF X 7.Disgaea series 8.Kingdom hearts series 9.Ni No Ku Ni 2 10.FF Crisis Core
do you think there's a jrpg that is both not boring to play and the story is engaging and not cringe? I liked Nier automata and P5, I never played the games in your lists but I did play Ni no kuni 1 but the gameplay kinda put me off. I dont really know if I liked it but I also had a bad day when I played it and I insta uninstalled it so I never got to give it a second chance.
@@Sabaelos probably too late to reply this but if u love P5 i recommend you to play Dragon Quest XI S, Ni no kuni 1 is too childish but the second one is worth a try, it is an entire different game with a "tales of"' style combat. Tales of berseria has an amazing story too!
I see. This is what my list would look like. 1. Xenoblade Chronicles 1/ Definitive Edition 2. Persona 3 3-4. Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn 5. Final Fantasy X 6. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 7. Persona 5 8. Eterains Odyssey V 9. Final Fantasy VII 10. Tales of Vesperia
Solid list! As a Xeno fan, I would also include Xenogears in my list, but 100% agreed on XC1 and XC2 being on top 10. I just finished XCDE and I must let that hype sit for a while before saying its my "number one" or on the "top 3", but I can already say it's for sure on my Top 5. What a blast I had with the 150 hours I just spent on XCDE!
I actually couldn't stand most of the cast. I liked Jade the most. The main character looks like such a dork. Erik had a good character model and personality. Don't get me started on Sylvando or whatever his name was. Annoying is an understatement. I had a hard time putting together a party I liked. The game itself was so basic that it was boring. I don't usually mind basic. Sometimes I prefer it but the characters were so bad that it made the unoriginal gameplay and story glaring. I will never understand how these games are so popular. They feel like they are designed for children or noobs.
Your list is definitely interesting because it's so much different from mine. Here it is: 1. Xenogears 2. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Trilogy 3. Final Fantasy VI 4. Radiant Historia 5. Earthbound 6. Chrono Trigger 7. Dragon Quest V 8. Chrono Cross 9. The World Ends with You 10. Valkyrie Profile
Fun fact. I have a new condition copy of xenogears for the PS1 and a PS2 to ply it on and have never played it... I just... didn’t get a chance as a kid. I bought it around the time of the ps2 launch for cheap. I really need to get around to playing it.
Octopath Traveler does not get enough recognition, it's one of my favorite games too! I also absolutely loved Ni no Kuni, the artwork and music!! Persona 5 is legend! Other games I would have included: Xenoblade Chronicles and Tales of series.
Plus 1 on Octopath. Although I do think they screwed it with the stories, not about the 8 individuals ones cuz that was great, but: (*Spoilers*) (*Spoilers*) . 1. No character interactions at all besides those estranged small talks at the pub. 2. All the stories eventually connect but only through a max hard side superboss which requires you to have an impossible and exausting gauntlet first and all the characters to unlock it, and in the end they still never talk about it or each other, even though it reveals the connection between all their ordeals. Super reveal and no comments at all felt dry and extremely anticlimactic. they really should have done it better at that part, It felt very empty at the end and that's a shame because the 8 stories were really charming. The music: Underrated, should be up there with Nier Automata and Persona 5 IMO. "Battle at journey's end", "They who govern reason" and "the one they call the witch" are masterpieces and I still listen to them.

Ff tactics is a different type of tactics game. Imo tactical rpgs go in this order 1.vandal hearts series 2.tactics ogre 3. Ff tactics series 4.fire emblem series 5.front mission series
I agree with you wholeheartedly on Persona 4. I've been playing games my entire life, and at 41 years old, I have never had another game really draw me in like Persona 4. The story, the cast, the everything. Just my favorite....everything of all time.
@Wolfz Gaming im glad ye all speak so highly of it, is it coming to ps4 do you think due to the big success on steam? :) I actually have the original P4 for ps2 but would like to have a physical copy of this on ps4 too that would be sweet. If not.....meh ill play it on steam :)
@@Terron29 it would be cool if it came out on PS4 and I’m so glad it came out on pc because that game really truly is something special and it’s my favorite game now so it would be cool to see it on PS4 because I would totally give Altus my wallet. It would be crazy if p4 had p5 graphics!
Persona 3 is better. I feel like 4 dropped the ball in the story department especially near the end. And the social links in 3 were just better in every way.
@@TheGamingShelf i can get that. its certainly not for everyone. still though, I would recommend some of the older games. they're not as slow and politically charged as the cold steel series
It's definitely a story heavy slow burn, but for me at least, the slow pacing was completely worth it during the payoff in every LoH title. You shouldn't really think of a single entry as a complete game, because it's really not. It may be 100 hours, but it's just a quarter of the story. Not everyone is into story heavy games though, so I get it.
@@TheGamingShelf I really understand that... Even though Cold Steel is my favorite series as a whole, the first game is slow as hell until the final like 10 hours... Basicly nothing of interest happens until like your third set of assignments, and the cliffhanger ending isn't satisfying in the least as an isolated story, and pretty much REQUIRES you to jump straight into CS2 to get it resolved! It's like the series isn't 4 games, but 2 games split into 4... The first 2 are mostly resolved on their own, and the final 2 stand on their own. It's a series that lives and dies on your ability to handle a pretty slow but interesting plot, in games that are as long as a Persona game, and are very connected to eachother!
From my experience with the genre the ten finest jrpgs ive played are: SaGa frontier Smt: Devil survivor Nier Gestalt Mother 3 Kingdom hearts 2 Final fantasy 9 Chrono cross ( Yes i prefer it to trigger fight me guys) Persona 4 Suikoden 3 And Wild arms 3
So happy to see Tokyo Xanadu on here! I found that one pretty fun and really enjoyed it. I hope whoever gets a copy of it enjoys it as well! I've never played any of the Ys games, but everytime I see a video on one, it makes me want to jump into the series. So, I'd love to receive a copy of Ys VIII. Even if I don't though, it's definitely going on my list of games to pick up!
I love p4 so much, it certainly has the best characters. The way they bonded is really well done and it just makes you feel closer to them. As much as i would love to see a p4 remake with p5 engine, a part of me wants it to stay the way it is. I dont know how to feel if i see Yu or the others pose
My personal list (not in exact order): Xenoblade Chronicles Persona 5 Royal Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA Xenogears Chrono Trigger Chrono Cross Suikoden II Final Fantasy VII Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of An Elusive Age Fire Emblem: Three Houses
3 of my favourite jrpgs made this list, nice to know p5r, p4g and DQXI are considered some of the best. Haven’t had a chance to play FFVIIR would love to play it and get in to the final fantasy series!
I am so glad you mentioned FF tactics, in my opinion the greatest JRPG of all time, from the characters to the job system to the freaking compelling story and the most epic soundtrack of all time. Yes you are right, an absolute crime that there's never been a true sequel to the original, though there are actual screenshots of its existence that Yasumi Matsuno released a while back. The game was aborted by SquareEnix, not sure why though.
The Tactics Advance games are great in their own right but a Tactics sub series with similar feel to the original and maybe not even a continuation of the world would be really cool. But yeah, a true sequel would be great too.
Good list, personally i'd drop ff7 and replace it with FF6. DQ8 is good, i really love DQ7. Legend of Legaia Secret of Mana would be on my list. My favorite RPGs though are FF6, DQ7, Phantasy star 4 (though 2 is great as well) and SuperMario RPG.
I am so happy to see Tokyo Xanadu on a list - it’s such a great game! I played the original on Vita so haven’t checked out the plus version. There’s 2 games on your list which are on my wish list - Dragon Quest XI on switch and Persona 4 Golden on steam :D
Very interesting with final fantasy 12. I enjoyed it when it came out, but now looking back at it I love the world that it built up, the the remaster made it all the better!
I’ve still never played ni no kuni and would love to! Surprised at myself because I love the ghibli movies! Also I’m always so torn with persona 4 because I played 75 hours of it and loved it but then lost my save and it’s just such a time investment to go into again :’)
finding persona 4 Golden guide and accidentally find your video about best rpg . and yes you right i never feels so connected with game character b4. Persona 4 is like make u go into highschool again love this game so much a song , character, of course nanako and kuma their voice cast is really the best. can't wait for persona 5 to go pc maybe take 10 years to make that hapoen😄
I think SMT: Nocturne was the best JRPG I ever played. I'm really hyped for the remaster. FFT and Tatics Ogre: Let Us Climb Together are the best tatical games made. Both are perfect. TO:LUCT has some really heavy scenes with rape, pillage, murder, betrayal, etc. Really games that are unique that will never be made again. Final Fantasy are great games, but I would'n put them in a top 10. Only FFT and FF Type-Zero are really unique. So... my JRPGs: SMT: Nocturne Radiant Historia Suikoden Series (Every game besides IV) Rogue galaxy Hack//G.U trilogy Tales of (...Vesperia being the best to me) Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together Fire Emblem - Each one is amazing for a diferent reason. I really loved The Sacred Stones btw Radiata Stories - A really unique jrpg... I beat the games many times but never could side with humans and let Ridley leave) Valkyrie Profile - both games are amazing... and Lezard was a really character O.O The list go own... also I really hope to one day see the remaster of infinite undiscovery (Xbox360 title), a AMAZING JRPG locked in a single console. Maybe PS4 or PC. u.u
@@PsychomachineryEBM Nah. I had an Atari, SNes and MegaDrive so I played most of them. There is many good ones, but I'll not use nostalgia as a metric of quality. (Even if FFIV is my favorite FF game beside FFT)
First off, congrats once again for reaching 10k subs, Taylor! It took a while, but it's totally deserved. Personally, I loved seeing fresh jrpg entries in this list instead of some all-time favourites such as Chrono Trigger, Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears, Final Fantasy VI (which are great games btw, but hold 4/10 spot in almost every top 10 jrpgs). My favourite jrpg isn't in the list (FFIX) but I can relate to basically all of your picks. I remember discovering your channel through a Ni No Kuni anticipation video and I couldn't agree more with what you said: it definitely brought new life to the genre in the PS3 era and it was the reason why I ultimately bought the console. The only game from the list I don't own and would love to give a try is Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. Somehow, I've never got the chance to play any Ys game: it's been on my radar for so long since you also talk about it quite a lot as one of the best action jrpgs in the market. As always, keep up your good work and whether you manage to reach big numbers or not, this channel will always be a blissful island for us jrpg freaks ;)
I love hearing your thoughts on these games, many of them being on my own favorites list. For some reason, Ys VIII escaped my notice completely until I heard you talk about how amazing it is, and I would love to play it!
I always see everyone praise P5, which is an amazing game don't get me wrong but P4 Golden was my favorite Persona game by far , and after seeing the comments and your video I'm glad there are more of us. Tbh I think one of the biggest reasons why P4 Golden was so dear to my heart is the timing when I played it, I was going through a rough time and every time I played it I felt like I actually had friends and I would have a blast playing it. It might sound dumb but once I finished it I truly felt like I lost friends. Loved your list.
Dude I have a separate video on P4 and say the EXACT same thing! That cast felt like real friends and I was super sad saying goodbye at the end of the game. Thanks for sharing.
Pretty solid. Skies of Arcadia and DQ8 deserve to be on every top ten JRPG list. Radiant Historia is pretty overrated though, unless you enjoy walking through the same areas dozens of times.
@@dobadobadooo I dunno man, I feel like it was just padding out the game length artificially. I must have trekked through that grass field area at least 20 times. And I don't really think the story was all that great either. Many events happened that were just plain dumb.
@@nunyabizness8878 Well, obviously I don't agree at all.The only real issue I had with the story was that Perfect Chronology seemed a bit too eager to redeem some of the villains, but all things considered I wouldn't really say it's that big a deal.
I’d say Fire Emblem Awakening or Three Houses are really good, and I also would put The World Ends With You in the conversation as well. I just like customizing my characters’ abilities and the different combinations to experiment with, so I feel like these games are definitely worthwhile in that regard
I would like Dragon Quest 11, personally I never could get into Dragon Quest when I played it on the DS back then but from how you're describing it it looks like this entry is a massive improvement with the character cast and world.
I'm so happy Final Fantasy XII is here! It's been my favorite Final Fantasy ever since PS2 and it fills my heart to know it's getting all the love with the remaster :) That said, I would love to win FIinal Fantasy VII Remake because I'm just waiting for a chance to give VII another, well, chance - since I've never been a fan :)

I have heard so much over the years about Persona 4 Gold, I had to check out the video on it. I have not played this series at all. Sounds interesting.
It's a great series! SMT: Nocturne, Persona 3-5, SMT IV, Devil Summoner spinoffs and Devil Survivor are all logical points of entry. Demon collection and fusion is an endlessly fun system. It's from before Pokemon and it is really addictive to collect em all.
The thing about Persona 5 that makes it truly great and stand out is that grinding isn't necessary nor is it the easiest way to get through challenges. The fusion system after you get special treatment from the twins makes it so that fusion will be your greatest ally more than ever before. But it's not an easy game either. I don't know if Royal was the one on this list, but it would be my number one on that release. It wouldn't be if we go vanilla P5 due to certain issues I had with the game.
Agree! P5 is the perfect difficulty. I'm one of those people who lowers the difficulty when I hit a roadblock and I never had to do that for 5. Pretty incredible accomplishment to balance a game with that many systems so perfectly
This is the first video I've seen from your channel and was honestly shocked you didn't have more subscribers. I can already tell your gonna find a lot of success with your channel in time. Good luck and here's a sub from a fellow jrpg fan
Just wanted to say it warms my heart to see ni no kuni on this list. Sure the mechanics can be a little wonky but the story is just incredible. I love it so much
I had never heard of Tokyo Xanadou. I definitely just purchased that one. I had all of the rest. I always appreciate anyone who opens up my eyes to a new RPG. Awesome video. :)
Awesome list! I will definitely prioritize the games that I haven't beaten yet higher for what I'll play next. I already own all of these games so good luck to everyone else.
Your list is amazing! This is my personal list ^^ 1- Xenogears 2- Chrono Trigger (DS Version) 3- Final Fantasy VI 4- Shin Megami Tensei IV 5- Xenoblade Chronicles 6- Chrono Cross 7- Final Fantasy X 8- Final Fantasy IV 9- Final Fantasy XIII saga 10- Xenosaga
I'm surprised Dragon Quest 8 isn't on here! I loved DQXI, but it doesn't hold a candle to 8. I can understand why you wouldn't add this since it's kind of "done", but Chrono Trigger is just so, so good. Surprised to not see it! Either way, great list.
I'm just getting into JRPGs. I'm currently playing FFVII, and I can't really say that it's blown me away. It feels pretty linear with few interesting game mechanics. The story is good, but sometimes the turn-based combat feels repetitive. I don't feel like I'm making many interesting gameplay decisions, just spamming my highest damage skills as I run from one piece of story to another.
Play FFIX, it's the best game in the franchise alongside VI. FFVII is actually quite overrated. If you didn't play it when back in 97, you most probably won't enjoy it now. People just overhype it due to nostalgia and was probably the first JRPG that they've ever played.
@@TheGamingShelf I mean more for the comparison since the style is pretty much like the later Trails games (including borrowing characters from cold steel)
I first discovered your channel when I saw the Atelier and Harvest Moon videos like 6 yrs ago and realized I was never officially subscribed! 😱 DQ 11 looks like such a great game! I just got a switch and these are all on my list 😁
I'm so glad you acknowledged Octopath Traveler for what it's worth. For a while there, I was thinking Fire Emblem: Three Houses would become my favourite JRPG of all time, but the more I think about it, the more I want to place Octopath above it. It's just. that. good. It's not a game. It's an experience.
The list was really well put and the enthusiasm you have for all the mentioned games is awesome I definitely need to check out some of these Great job on this
I agree wholeheartedly with this list. Though here's my top ten jrpgs: 1. Phantasy Star IV 2. Suikoden II 3. Persona 4 Golden 4. Xenogears 5. Final Fantasy IX 6. Mother 3 7. Star Ocean Till the end of time 8. Breath of Fire IV 9. Legend of Dragoon 10. Valkyria Chronicles
excellent list. I would rate breath of fire 3 over 4 personally but 4 was very good too and had the most beautiful sprite work....maybe ever lol. Valkyria chronicles is an excellent shout too!
Good list. Would probably take FF 6 and 9 over 12 (I just found the characters in 12 very boring), maybe add Suikoden 2 or 5, but it is really tough coming up with a top ten with so many great JRPGs.
Great list comrade. Pretty surprised there was no Chrono Trigger anywhere T_T... but having any Ys game in the list alongside FFT/FF12 and DQ somewhat makes up for it.
I've been thinking about getting DQ11 for a while but never gotten around to it, I would love to own the switch version. Anyways for me whenever I play (j)rpgs, I always find myself comparing them to Xenoblade. That's how I know it's still my favorite. Nothing resonates with me quite like it does. Only other one I've played thus far that I enjoyed nearly as much is YS VIII. I had a blast with it and the ost is fire. Now im trying to get through the Trails series but its gonna take forever, im only on Sky SC
My list: #10: Final Fantasy IX #9: Fire Emblem Echoes #8: Pokémon Black/White #7: Demon’s Souls #6: Persona 2: Eternal Punishment #5: Xenoblade Chronicles #4: Dragon Quest XI #3: Nier Automata #2: Dark Souls #1: Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
Well-done video. I played through most of FF7: Remake and even got to the final boss, but the difficulty just drove me crazy. I never felt like I was doing much damage, and I was healing more than anything else. Maybe I just need to "git gud," but I can't bring myself to go back to it. Combat was a chore that I had to do in order to progress the story, and I just don't want to spend my time like that. On a different note, if you haven't played Chrono Trigger, I highly recommend that you do! If it's not in your top 5 after you've experienced it, I'll eat my left shoe.
Well get your show ready lol. I actually enjoyed Chrono Trigger quite a lot but I never played SNES RPGs growing up so now matter how good they might be it'll be really hard for them to crack my Top 10.
Great list! Interesting to see a lot of newer games on the list, I'm sort of a mix of old-school and new-school in my own favorites, but I can understand the love for a lot of new games, JRPGs have really come back strong in recent years, it's wonderful to see. And what an amazing and super-generous giveaway! Congrats on 10k, that's a wonderful accomplishment. If I were to win the giveaway, I'd love a copy of Octopath Traveler. I was on the fence about it at launch, and for a long time wasn't too sure about it, but recent videos and friends recommending it have sold me. (PC would be preferred)
This generation has definitely been a comeback for JRPGs in a major way. I have my love for the classics but some of the modern games are just too good!
Persona 4 & 5, Final fantasy 7 & 12, even Ni No Kuni! Good lordy first vid of yours I've seen and already feeling it! "Say hello Gogo!" QUACK QUACK! Edit : Also have you played Persona 3? If not well... move over P4!
Persona 4 golden is arguably my most favorite game and definitely my most favorite cast of characters in any sort of media. Words can't explain how much I love these characters. Feels great that, with the steam release, many people will come to appreciate the underrated masterpiece that's persona 4.
Just playing it now, its my first entry to the persona series bcz came was on steam around time that i started to listen to persona ost without knowing the game. Iam around winter and iam kinda sad that the game is ending :-/ I have to say tho, the dungeons feel pretty underwhelming and leveling feels pretty slow. Other than that, its a great game.

Congrats for reaching that milestone :) I would love to own Ni No Kuni for PS4! Never played it back on the PS3 because I heard bad things about the combat system. This game oozes so much charm though, I think I should really give it a chance.
My Top 3 List 3. The Legend of Heroes : Trails in The Sky 2. The Legend of Heroes : Trails of Cold Steel 1. The Legend of Heroes : Trails of Cold Steel II And now still progressing on Sky SC. Trails series become my personal favorite after finishing Cold Steel about 6 months ago :)
Can I ask you something? What is it about Cold Steel 1 you found so good? Reason why I ask is I got 62 hours into the game, and had to stop because of how bad the story was being told, how boring the tasks were, how predictable the story was, and how lazy the animations were (and how they were getting worse as the game went on). I don't mind a slow story, I prefer it actually, but the problem is the game actively doesn't want to tell the story. Something mysterious or dramatic happens? Better skip 3 days to a month in time without talking about it or resolving it! So what is it you saw that was so good in it? I'm honestly curious. Because, for the life of me, I can not understand the Overwhelmingly Positive is has on Steam. It is an OK at best.
@@Nickle_King Oh no you haven't finish it. The most thing I enjoy is The Ending! I finish it at 82 hours. I too think it was an OK game before I finish it :)
Awesome list and great video!!! For the giveaway, I would love to own Ys VIII! I haven’t really played an Ys game before and I’ve heard this one is a great one to start with, especially on Switch!
It might just be recency bias but P5s cast fell so much less anime-esque than P4s, which is why I ended up loving the non-combat sections The game just oozes style. It's near JRPG perfection for me. Just wish it had even bigger cities and areas to explore.
A couple I haven't played but the ones I have are some of my favourites. You sir have impeccable taste and like they say, great minds... Subscribed. Gonna watch more of your older videos and look forward to new ones
An excellent game with both gameplay and story. The bosses all make my blood curdle and I love it. Even the 2d sprite cutscenes were very moving. I am not huge on political intrigue but this game had the magic to make it really cool and it came off as game of Thrones meets Disney. The battle system is amazing. It may just be a re-skin of tactics ogre but it is a damn fine game. The job system worked well in a strategy environment.
I've added the game titles to the video description as a lot of people have been asking about this. My apologies, this won't happen again in any future videos!

Ever since Persona 4 Golden was released on Steam, I have this intense urge to purchase it....... even though I don't have a computer.
A laptop works too, it only fucks up the cinematics to earrape level but otherwise it runs like butter even on max settings
Imo the original 4 is better

Just Imagine If Xenogears was finished with a mainline FF budget.
If only 😩
I know I’m one of very few, but I love the Xenogears’ second disc; where the characters sit in the chair and deliver soliloquies because you get to hear first hand how the characters feel about each other and what’s ahead of them.
Great choices! I almost added Three Houses to this list but Xanadu just barely edged it out.
same but i hate the p5 fandom
@@Pixey003 A fandom shouldn't affect your opinion on the thing itself. If you like P5, then why does the fandom matter?

Hell yes

Absolutely
Emma best waifu
Trails series is great for sure but it's definitely not without it's flaws. Cold Steel having 4 parts seemed like overkill. it was milked for all it's worth. 3 and 4 especially seemed diluted and would have been better as one game instead of two.

I just finished XCDE and I must let that hype sit for a while before saying its my "number one" or on the "top 3", but I can already say it's for sure on my Top 5. What a blast I had with the 150 hours I just spent on XCDE!

Not trying to be a ruiner of fun, but I think Fire Emblem is an SRPG more than a JRPG
@@MicDISCO well what does the j stand for lol
It’s hard to pick a favorite character in Dragon Quest 11, they’re all likable.
Right? It’s a really fantastic cast.
Here it is:
1. Xenogears
2. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Trilogy
3. Final Fantasy VI
4. Radiant Historia
5. Earthbound
6. Chrono Trigger
7. Dragon Quest V

Earthbound, what a great game
Radiant Historia..I see you're a man of culture as well

Persona 4 is just incredible good. I totaly agree with you on "the characters are like real friends".
Octopath Traveler does not get enough recognition, it's one of my favorite games too! I also absolutely loved Ni no Kuni, the artwork and music!! Persona 5 is legend! Other games I would have included: Xenoblade Chronicles and Tales of series.
Agreed! I think too many people didn't like that the stories didn't connect together, but the combat and music are sublime.
if only all characters levelled up at the same time and maybe you weren't locked to your main but idk
Plus 1 on Octopath. Although I do think they screwed it with the stories, not about the 8 individuals ones cuz that was great, but:
(*Spoilers*)
(*Spoilers*)
.
1. No character interactions at all besides those estranged small talks at the pub.
2. All the stories eventually connect but only through a max hard side superboss which requires you to have an impossible and exausting gauntlet first and all
the characters to unlock it, and in the end they still never talk about it or each other, even though it reveals the connection between all their ordeals. Super
reveal and no comments at all felt dry and extremely anticlimactic.
they really should have done it better at that part, It felt very empty at the end and that's a shame because the 8 stories were really charming.
The music:
Underrated, should be up there with Nier Automata and Persona 5 IMO. "Battle at journey's end", "They who govern reason" and "the one they call the witch"
are masterpieces and I still listen to them.
Ni no kuni is really underrated like it's better than breath of the wild

The first time I've seen a top 10 where Tokyo Xanadu gets mentioned! I love that game! Own it on Vita :) earned up a sub my man.
Thank you! It’s a great game more people need to know about 👍
Not gonna lie, im surprised a "trails of" game isn't on here, personal favorite is the first cold steel.
A lot of people still miss out on those
I’m just not a fan of Cold Steel. Bored the heck out of me.
From my experience with the genre the ten finest jrpgs ive played are:
SaGa frontier
Smt: Devil survivor
Nier Gestalt
Mother 3
Kingdom hearts 2
Final fantasy 9
Chrono cross ( Yes i prefer it to trigger fight me guys)
Persona 4
Suikoden 3
And Wild arms 3

Xenoblade Chronicles
Persona 5 Royal
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA
Xenogears
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Suikoden II
Final Fantasy VII
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of An Elusive Age
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Sexy list 😁👍
3 of my favourite jrpgs made this list, nice to know p5r, p4g and DQXI are considered some of the best. Haven’t had a chance to play FFVIIR would love to play it and get in to the final fantasy series!
please play the original ff7
I would love to revisit FF XII, I never finished it as a kid but the job system looks like it's exactly what the game needed from the beginning.
I agree with you on Persona 4, I felt so connected to all the characters too 🥰 Naoto, Teddie, and Kanji are my favorites.
My favorite JRPGs of all time are:
Final Fantasy 7 and 9
Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5
Chrono Trigger
Dragon Quest 8 and 11
Hard to argue with those picks!
Good list, personally i'd drop ff7 and replace it with FF6.
DQ8 is good, i really love DQ7.
Legend of Legaia
Secret of Mana would be on my list.
My favorite RPGs though are FF6, DQ7, Phantasy star 4 (though 2 is great as well) and SuperMario RPG.
Mee too. Melodies of life is the best soundtrack to me
I am so happy to see Tokyo Xanadu on a list - it’s such a great game! I played the original on Vita so haven’t checked out the plus version. There’s 2 games on your list which are on my wish list - Dragon Quest XI on switch and Persona 4 Golden on steam :D
Cool list. Tokyo Xanadu looks interesting would love to try it out
Very interesting with final fantasy 12.
Solid list, man! Amazing set of games here. Surprised to see Tokyo Xanadu and Ys VIII but no Trails games.
You’re not the only one lol. Just not for me I guess 😅
finding persona 4 Golden guide and accidentally find your video about best rpg . and yes you right i never feels so connected with game character b4. Persona 4 is like make u go into highschool again love this game so much a song , character, of course nanako and kuma their voice cast is really the best. can't wait for persona 5 to go pc maybe take 10 years to make that hapoen😄
awesome solid list and ranking. a few recomendations for you to try are "radiata stories" and "suikoden"
So... my JRPGs:
SMT: Nocturne
Radiant Historia
Suikoden Series (Every game besides IV)
Rogue galaxy
Hack//G.U trilogy
Tales of (...Vesperia being the best to me)
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Fire Emblem - Each one is amazing for a diferent reason. I really loved The Sacred Stones btw
Radiata Stories - A really unique jrpg... I beat the games many times but never could side with humans and let Ridley leave)
Valkyrie Profile - both games are amazing... and Lezard was a really character O.O
The list go own... also I really hope to one day see the remaster of infinite undiscovery (Xbox360 title), a AMAZING JRPG locked in a single console. Maybe PS4 or PC. u.u
Lol you nevet touched a 8 or 16 bits rpg i see

Persona 4 golden' characters is so good its actually scary that i thought they were actually real at one point
Haha right?

Thank you for such kind words Luca!
I love hearing your thoughts on these games, many of them being on my own favorites list. For some reason, Ys VIII escaped my notice completely until I heard you talk about how amazing it is, and I would love to play it!
It’s a super good action RPG! Even if you don’t win the giveaway I highly recommend checking it out.
The Gaming Shelf That is definitely the plan!
The Gaming Shelf I just watched it and loved it!!! Great job dude for real, keep at it
Thank you 🙏
If I ever lose my memory, I want to play Octopath, Ni No Kuni, Xenoblade, Bravely Default, Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger and Persona 4 Golden again.
My top 10 (with one per franchise):

9. *Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology*
8. *Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King*
7. *Chrono Trigger*
6. *Persona 5 Royal*
5. *Yakuza 0*
4. *Suikoden II*
3. *Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door*
2. *Skies of Arcadia Legends*
1. *Tales of Symphonia*
Pretty solid. Skies of Arcadia and DQ8 deserve to be on every top ten JRPG list. Radiant Historia is pretty overrated though, unless you enjoy walking through the same areas dozens of times.
@@nunyabizness8878 I mean, I don't really see the problem with reusing the same areas as long as it makes sense in the context of the story.

@@Bradley_Lute Don't forget Digital Devil Saga
Excelent list! I also like to mention Xenogears, Legend of legaia, Tales of Vesperia and FF6 and FF9
I'd personally love to win either Persona 5 Royal, or the Switch version of Dragon Quest 11.

Just wait for some plot twist 😏😉
Play FFIX, it's the best game in the franchise alongside VI. FFVII is actually quite overrated. If you didn't play it when back in 97, you most probably won't enjoy it now. People just overhype it due to nostalgia and was probably the first JRPG that they've ever played.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the trails games when you were talking about Tokyo Xanadu. Either way, great video
I liked Sky, but hated Cold Steel. I really should make a video explaining it lol.
@@TheGamingShelf I mean more for the comparison since the style is pretty much like the later Trails games (including borrowing characters from cold steel)
Don't forget Vagrant story. I hope we will see it's remake in future
I first discovered your channel when I saw the Atelier and Harvest Moon videos like 6 yrs ago and realized I was never officially subscribed! 😱 DQ 11 looks like such a great game! I just got a switch and these are all on my list 😁
How dare you not subscribe, Meghan! I kid, thanks for the sub 😉
It’s pretty incredible! I love how it’s just a collection of smaller stories. And man that music 🥲
Mine are
1: Persona 5
2: Mother 3
3: Earthbound
Ps. Earthbound and Mother 3 are pretty equal to me. I can never be sure on the exact order
The list was really well put and the enthusiasm you have for all the mentioned games is awesome I definitely need to check out some of these Great job on this
Thanks Kugan!
I agree wholeheartedly with this list. Though here's my top ten jrpgs:
1. Phantasy Star IV
2. Suikoden II
3. Persona 4 Golden
4. Xenogears
5. Final Fantasy IX
6. Mother 3
7. Star Ocean Till the end of time
8. Breath of Fire IV
9. Legend of Dragoon
10. Valkyria Chronicles
Quality list 👌
excellent list.
My top 10
10. Crisis core
9. Xenoblade chronicles
8. Chrono trigger
7. SMT III Nocturne
6. FF X
5. Persona 3P
4. FF IX
3. P4G
2. Suikoden 2
1. FF 7
My list:
#10: Final Fantasy IX
#9: Fire Emblem Echoes
#8: Pokémon Black/White
#7: Demon’s Souls
#6: Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
#5: Xenoblade Chronicles
#4: Dragon Quest XI
#3: Nier Automata
#2: Dark Souls
#1: Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
Nice list!
Danm good list
@@TheGamingShelf Well shoot. I liked this pair too! 😂
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age and Final Fantasy Tactics need a remake!!!!
Square acknowledging that Tactics even exists would be a great start.
I definitely want to play Octopath Traveler at some point. Congrats on 10k by the way!
Thanks Brett!
Haha thanks for watching!
I have played P3 and while it’s good I enjoyed P4 and P5 way more. Tartarus was a slog and I didn’t like the darker tone.
@@TheGamingShelf Ehy fair enough, like I say all-over, P3 best story, P4 best cast, P5 best gameplay.

My top 10: FFIV, VI, Tactics, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Suikoden I, Wild Arms 1, Alundra, Xenogears. Also 10 of the best soundtracks in video game history
AHHHH ME TOOOO PERSONA 4 GOLDEN IS ALSO MY FAVOURITE OF ALL TIME
NICE 👍
Been a subscriber of yours since your Blistered Thumbs days. Glad to see you are doing so well for yourself! I've already played Tokyo Xanadu for the PSVita but I'd love to try the extended cut x
Woah that’s a long time! Thanks for your support for all these years.
Persona 5 Royal
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of An Elusive Age
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA
Xenoblade Chronicles
Xenogears
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy VII
Suikoden II
Persona 4 Golden
Great list 👍
Congrats for reaching that milestone :) I would love to own Ni No Kuni for PS4! Never played it back on the PS3 because I heard bad things about the combat system. This game oozes so much charm though, I think I should really give it a chance.
Combat in 2 is way better, but everything else makes up for it.
My Top 3 List
3. The Legend of Heroes : Trails in The Sky
2. The Legend of Heroes : Trails of Cold Steel
1. The Legend of Heroes : Trails of Cold Steel II
And now still progressing on Sky SC. Trails series become my personal favorite after finishing Cold Steel about 6 months ago :)
I think I’m sensing a theme with your list...🧐
Haha
Just completed Tokyo Xanadu! absolutely loved it!
Awesome! Glad to hear. It definitely it rly deserves more love.
I recommend playing Mother 3 and Fire Emblem, these are some of my favorite jrpg
I love Fire Emblem! I almost had Awakening at #10.
Awesome list and great video!!! For the giveaway, I would love to own Ys VIII! I haven’t really played an Ys game before and I’ve heard this one is a great one to start with, especially on Switch!
Definitely a great entry point to the series for sure.
It might just be recency bias but P5s cast fell so much less anime-esque than P4s, which is why I ended up loving the non-combat sections
The game just oozes style.
Thanks Nico! I appreciate the sub 😄 Enjoy your stay.
Pleased to see Final fantasy tactics here.
Since you're making up new builds, you really liked the game.
Have you played SMT: Devil Survivor? It's pretty addictive strategy gameplay with an edgy demon story.
Recently discovered this channel and its great! Got to be Perona 5 though! Been itching to play it after 4!
Thanks for checking the channel out 🙏
You rlly should give it a go to xenoblade chronicles, it's an amazing experience
I actually beat the Switch version last year! Good game just not top 10 material for me.
Persona 5 was my first turn based RPG I've ever played and it's phenomenal.
