Ps1 era is my favorite era for RPGs. My favorite being tales of destiny, I just love the pixel art graphics and the battle system. Good list though, lots of nostalgia.
It's my favorite era for RPGs as well, so many classics. Both of the Tales games for the PS1 are solid, they just missed the cut for me but would have been honorable mentions. I didn't fall in love with the Tales series until the GC/PS2 era so I don't have as much nostalgia with the older games as I played them later, which played a factor for me tbh

I didn't mind the disc 2 issue yet because..like I've said.. it's the very first rpg that I tried, so i thought maybe it was made that way . But when I learned that it was rushed, I was looking forward for a remake. Or atleast a re-release that is completed. I don't care if the graphics are the same. As long as it's completed
I was tripping over the fact that Levitz and Prince Albert used the same moves but had different animations. Which made me grind out Levitz to see what his Gust Of Wind dance looked like.
Man, Chrono Cross is just the full 10/10. It takes true grit to depart so radically from a pretty much sacred predecessor, and true talent to make it such a brilliant game.
Great but not 10/10 -Because of many characters a lot of them lack a great backgroundstory and character development. -Characters feel samy in combat -The story is great but the pacing terrible. 90% of the story is explained in the last 5% of the game
Not brilliant. 7/10 max due to the characters beyond main 3 are all so shallow you can skip rocks off of them, which means there are far too many, likely due to the color scheme attack system which is MEH at best. At least every character in Trigger was compelling in their own way (even many of the enemies)! Awww... fuggit, Cross deserves a 5/10 because the story doesn't really pull you in either.... wait... weak characters and uncompelling story... maybe 5 is too high.... let's go 4/10... Wondering why I played this at all? Oh yeah, I was looking to the ties to Trigger, which are barely there at all. You wouldn't know this was in the same Universe if they didn't spoon feed the fact to you. Yep. 4/10 seems right... misses the mark.
@@Edwinschuur i do wonder if it would be ranked higher if it wasn't named Chrono Cross, if they hadn't related to Chrono Trigger, it may be rated higher, just a theory though
I felt the nostalgia in the way you described these games. This is what retro stuff is all about to me. That feeling you get when you revisit a game that you played and loved as a kid, whether it helped some people escape the world around them, or help brings back other awesome memories from around that same time they were playing these games for the first time. Even if I've never played an old retro game before, I can appreciate the work that went into it with the technology that we had back then. Great list and great explanations of the games. Well done.
All I know is don't start Xenogears unless you're ready to dive into something huge. I think my first playthrough was around 80-90 hours!! Great game, one of the heaviest stories of any RPG. It'll get to you in the best of ways.
Funny how if you just play titles starting with Xeno & Star Ocean how many sci fi rpg bangers you got! I kinda got PSX tied with SNES for my favorite classic system but jeez these types of channels really remind you just how well balanced their repertoire’s really were
Legend of Legaia was my first RPG too. I bought it when I was 8 not knowing anything about it or about RPGs in general. I though it was a fighting game from the cover. I could not progress with the game as a dumb 8 year old. Couple of years later, I picked it up again and was able to pass through Rim Elm chapter. ..Been a fan of RPGs since then.
My best friend owned it when we were younger (One of the few I didn;t buy myself until I was older). It definitely is one of the harder RPG's for young minds but really captivating once you understand how to progress.
Very sad that the brilliant Vagrant Story isn't on this list.. :( It has some of the best storytelling, atmosphere, and writing I've seen in a game! It's main issue is the clunky interface, but once you get past that it offers some incredibly deep and layered gameplay. Not to mention it was a technical triumph on the PS1, and is easily one of the most impressively looking games on the system!
@@danielszemborski I admit, despite 2 chances, once even buying it for my Vita years ago, I just simply couldn't get into Vagrant Story beyond several hours.
It's not on my Top Ten either... reasons being: 1) Upgrades get progressively worst to find parts for and you end up farming a bit for the better ones. 2) Risk system, though innovative, isn't anywhere near my favorite battle system. Despite the fact I could run my risk all the way up to kill a guy, by the time you do so, you're only hitting for 1 damage and it takes a few minutes to kill them. The other option is to let them damage you and use your precious healing items.
Vagrant Story is great, but maybe too close to final fantasy for this list (developed by final fantasy devs and some of the lore was later incorporated into FF)
I'm so happy Grandia made the cut! And at number 2!! Was not expecting it because it's an underrated game. It was a random find for me and I'm so glad it happened all those years ago. The story, characters, game play and soundtrack are phenomenal. Thanks for giving it some love!
No problem! It’s one of my favorite games of all time. We just gave it a lot more love in our most recent video about 8 great JRPGs that capture the spirit of adventure, to which no game does that better than Grandia IMO
Xenogears was supposed to be 6 games. Unfortunately, Square didn’t cared too much about the project and made it only 1 game, which is supposed to be the 5th entry in the series. After Xenogears released, Tetsuya Takahashi (basically the creator of the game) left Square and founded his own company, Monolith Soft (was owned by Namco) , and tried to continue the unfinished story of Xenogears, which led to the release of the Xenosaga Trilogy. Unfortunately, Xenosaga was not that successful and once again, they couldn’t complete the project as intended (still pretty good games, especially Xenosaga 3). After that, Nintendo bought Monolith Soft and Takahashi kind of abandoned the project. Today he is working with the Xenoblade franchise, which I highly recommend if you enjoyed Xenogears (it’s not as ambitious tho). Sorry if you already knew all that lol
@@Luckeh_ man, I'm so bummed because Xenogears is my favorite RPG story of all time and I finally got my hands on an English translated copy of Perfect Works last year and it was worth the 22 year wait 👌🏾 I was playing through Xenoblade Chronicles for the switch and man.... I hate that game and then I hate myself for hating the game that came from our belonged Xenogears creators. It just lacks the character development, dialog and exploration of themes like love, hate, brotherhood, God and man like Gears and instead feels more like an MMO story than a JRPG. I don't know, it was just painful and maybe my hopes were of a story like Xenosaga and Gears were what did it. I stopped playing it after the part where the *SPOILERS BELOW* . ... ... .... ...... Princess joins your team and you help fend off the betrayers of the crown and then I just said "ugh ENOUGH" and stopped playing. Does the story get better?
@@xcaluhbration I really gotta read Perfect Works! Regarding Xenoblade, by princess you’re probably referring to Melia, but… I’m not really sure who are the “betrayers of the crown”… maybe you’re talking about the Bionite Order? Well, the story definitely gets better and has a pretty Xeno finale, but I agree with you that the character development is pretty lackluster in the first Xenoblade… Personally, I prefer Xenoblade 2, even though it’s pretty slow and with some shonen anime jokes here and there at the beginning of the game, when the story picks up it’s really really good, with great world building and some of the best developed characters in the whole franchise. It’s also full of Xenogears and Xenosaga references that make it even better in my book! :P The thing is, originally, Xenoblade 1 was gonna be called “Monado: Beginning of the World” and was completely isolated from the rest of the Xeno games. That’s when Satoru Iwata, former president of Nintendo (RIP…), wanted to honor Takahashi by including the Xeno name in his new game. So the first game was not supposed to be part of the Xeno series at all and then, in Xenoblade 2, Takahashi decided to connect it to the other games, which really enriched the Xenoblade lore and made it much more complex and better.
@@Luckeh_ wow dude, that adds a lot more context to what I experienced, thanks, that actually makes me less indignant towards X1. I think I'll skip through Xenoblade 1 and try out to 2, maybe I'll like it a bit more. That perfect works book in English is one you can't get unless you know someone who can get you the link last I checked. The author is always doing what they can to duck and dodge Squareenix legal department, which is dumb because Squenix should just embrace the guy and sell his works through their own site as it is quality. 😘👌🏾 I think playing Xenogears at such an impressionable age as 14 really screwed me up for a lot of other stories in games and movies because by the time I played Suikoden 2 I finished it and was like "Meh". It wasn't until Star Wars KOTOR that I finally was amazed by an RPG story again, which if you haven't played it I highly recommend KOTOR 1 and 2 which you can even download in an app store because the 2nd game in the series does the GREATEST exploration, critique and attempts at answering the question of "what is the nature of the force" through the use of a character that I can only think of as a mix of Karelian, The Sages, Grahf and Elly. In fact this particular character is one I'll put up against any in fiction as an example of brilliant writing, critical thinking and one that challenges the players thought processes.... But I digress. What did you think of Xenosaga, if you had the chance to play them.
I grew up in the PS1 JRPG era and Star Ocean 2 is easily my favorite non FF rpg (Secret of Mana is a close second although it's on the SNES). I graduated to online MMOs around the time PS2 came out and I never looked back.
I really love the Item creation aspect. SO2's method of doing it is by far the best to me, and still unduplicated to this day (even in the sequels). That and who doesn't love it when you go into battle and Dias Flac starts off by saying "Piece of junk!"
Great list man. 90s RPGs.... hard to make a top 10 list IMO. From Saga Frontier to the Tales of series, and a bunch of hidden gems like thousand arms, glad I was able to experience the golden age as a teenager.
BOF3 will forever be one of my all time favourites the story is in a league of its own the dragon system is immense and the music is great number 4 was a close second but I felt the dragon designs let it down, number 5 was what killed the whole franchise. If capcom remade BOF3 my life would be complete after the ff7 remake just take my money and have it 😢
Vagrant Story has been mentioned below and should definitely be on the list . Also I really liked a game called Shadow Madness , A shameless FF7 clone but I loved it . Also a gothic horror rpg called Kodoulka , VERY slow battles but a great adventure game that led to the PS2 Shadow Hearts rpg sequels.
Totally agreed with you when you said that we will probably never ever experience a masterpiece like Xenogears ever again. It makes me sad, but also happy at the same time I got to experience something like that in my lifetime. Yasunori Mitsuda's music invokes emotion in me like no other composer can. Truly a genius!
Legend of Dragoon and Legend of Legaia were two games I had played demos of and always wanted to play fully as a kid, but never could. Legend of Dragoon was something I saw through an in-store demo and really thought the transformation mechanic was cool (this was during a period of time where that kind of feature really drew me in. I loved any game where you could transform). Legend of Legaia, I had a demo from PlayStation Underground or something and I would revisit it regularly, always wondering about that creepy giant monster that smashes down the gate. One day, I will probably beat at least Legend of Legaia. Chrono Cross, well, I could write a whole paragraph on why I love that game. I spent years of my life on it as a kid and even played it with my grandfather, who would pick up the game and fight some of the bosses/superbosses for fun and tell us about it later. He was the first of us to beat the Criosphinx superboss after several tries. But one other reason the game has stuck with me is the soundtrack, which is unmatched for its time (and I will not accept any arguments edgewise, sorry).
As a closing thought after watching this like 10 times lol. I hope modern fans realize the world doesn't just revolve around "Final Fantasy" there are so many great classic epics out there that deserve that recognition and playablity. I realize mainstream folks are always going to gravitate more towards stuff that is remade in some fashion or ported to modern hardware, but serously, as you have played FF VII remake and grown to enjoy the original Final Fantasy games as im seeing a massive influx now on twitch. Take some time and really check out some quality works of art that arn't just FF. There is alot of amazing adventures and fantasy worlds to explore on this great 32-bit system.
The kiddies in this day and age should check out Legend of Mana. The short stories feel to it is PERFECT for the ADHD generation. If they're not impressed by the bright palettes and AWESOME music, then well, they can go back to playing temple run or whatever they do on their phones.
I was ready to come in here and add my favorite games to your list, but they're in the list! It's good to see games like Lunar and Wild Arms getting recognition. Also, Lunar's sound track still goes hard to this day!
With Grandia in paticular, this is a game that is so under appreciated though I hope that isn't the case now that its ported to modern hardware. But holy hell the visual asthetics, sprite detail and pre-rendered backgrounds offering a clever mix of various abstract cultural designs provides you probably one of the most gorgious looking worlds in any rpgs. I much rather have this then FF VII remake if im being honest. On the same level of Skies of arcadia. The story it self is also very solid, well not entirely overly complex like xenogears but still offers such a immersive experience and banty humerous anime like dialogue strewn about. This is quite as perfect as you can get with a traditional jrpg game.
To be fair people asked for a FF7 remake for nearly a decade. As for Grandia... I admit, I liked Grandia II better. I loathed the leveling system in Grandia, and Grandia II had a more interesting story for me.
Love your list, when you were reviewing about the surprising amount of mature themes, Vandal Hearts came to mind especially the opening where there were strong hints of gang-rape about to happen to a small village being destroyed by soldiers. My mouth dropped open in shock since back in those days, mature themes such as that were not common and highly censored. You did an amazing job explaining your reasons and even your dislikes. My only complaint is only now I discovered this video.
I play Arc The Lad 3 a lot before. The item making system is one of selling points, with also some jobs you can do as a Hunter. The only downside is item bug, where you might get some item not appeared in your inventory even though the item is actually there. P/S : Chrono Cross is always the best masterpiece for me. My local TV station even use some of OSTs for their travelog and documentary shows.
Nice Top 3 there, those definitely would be in my top ten (Especially Star Ocean 2), but truthfully, Parasite Eve and Legend of Mana really belong in the top ten, especially Legend of Mana, because it's perfect for the nowadays players with the short attention spans because many of the scenarios are short, offering the perfect play style for them. It also has the beautiful color palettes you mentioned you love and some of the best boss music EVER. It's also kinda pushing it, but my favorite all time game that isn't named Chrono Trigger DS is a little game called Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, a game that PSM magazine gave Game of the Year to over Final Fantasy 7, and for good reason. Sure, there's a bit of platforming elements making it an Action RPG, but I still call it an RPG nonetheless, and the most perfectly packaged 2D one at that.
idk that any game has made me feel as many emotions as i did while playing xenogears. think the only thing that would come close is the xenoblade series and its wild to see were core of those games originated from
Thanks for subscribing first of all, haha it sounds like you have some great taste! Xenogears is definitely one that leaves a lasting impression on you. I plan on doing a retrospective over it eventually, I just want to make sure I do it justice
I actually shed a tear when I finally beat Xenogears then proceeded to play through it at least 5 more times just to make sure I did everything there was to do in game as well as relive the beautiful story. Still my favorite jrpg of all time. Also loved the sound trac and still listen to it today.
@@stephaniejones8318 Xenogears provides quite the emotional experience, especially the ending so I’m sure you’re not alone there. The song Faraway Promise always makes me feel a certain way no other track does and nearly moves me to tears everytime I hear it, there’s just something so nostalgic and emotional about it that reminds me of simpler times
Star Ocean 2nd story..... Ahhhh yes that game kicked the crap outta me and I loved every moment of it. ❤️ The soundtrack, characters, world and battle system was a lot of fun for me to experiment with.
I really wish they would bring back the Suikoden series. I loved the first two games. I never got to play the later ones, but the original two were definitely in my top five JRPGs of ALL TIME (along with Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy IV).
ahh i remember seeing final fantasy VII as greatest hits, remembering the amazing commercials years ago. it set off a FFVII addiction for me and my friends, we all got it, played it for dozens of hours. one of the best memories i have
Personally Tales of destiny is my favorite and most impactful game for me on the PS1. but i own 3 others out of 10 on this list! truly great games man.
Saved video! I have a psp 3000 with a lot of RPG games of Ps1, my favorite one is Chrono Cross, you can feel the shore, the sea an sun in the music, cheers!
Man....i wish xenogear has remake.... But i do know the Dev before they almost bankruptcy but since xenoblade 1 came out they company survive . Asking for remake is just something not easy decision but i really hope they have a sequal .
False, Xenogears was developed by Squaresoft and was a success considering it wasn't a worldwide release. The director Tetsuya Takahashi and his wife Soroya Saga submitted a script for the next FF (FF7) which was rejected for being too dark but were allowed to make a game based on its script and Xenogears was born. He and his wife left Square when they refused to make any sequels which they had planned and they set up monolith soft who made Xenosaga 1-3 which Bandai Namco published on PS2. Nintendo bought them out and that led to Xenoblade being a thing with a bigger budget and scope.
Also I’m with you with Lunar too. I loved them both but I prefer Silver Star story a little more over Eternal Blue. I wish we could have gotten at least two more. We already saw a new white and red dragon with the first two so I would love to see the new blue dragon and black dragon lol
It is a real shame the Lunar series is one that didn’t make it past the PlayStation. I really loved the aesthetic and charm those games provide, I just wanted more damnit! lol
My first RPG experience was also on the PS1. It was Beyond The Beyond. Most didn't care for it but I certainly did. Still play it this very day. FF7 and Suikoden 1/2 were the others I played on the PS1. I think I bought FF9 but I don't recall playing it much if ever.
If we would have done some honorable mentions it would have made it there for sure. Very good game. There’s so many great RPGs on the PlayStation that we couldn’t just include them all unfortunately
Xenogears I feel is a bit overly ambitious for what it tried to achieve, had this game came out years later, it may have made a more cultural impact. I think its garnered a further appreciation as a cult hit now more then anything because the audience has grown up and is able to further understand its complex thematic elements and naratives. For a game that tried to literally surpass the conventional style of story telling for its demographic in jrpgs and for this medium in general, for many years it remained a one of a kind product of its era and despite its convulated rushed disk 2 ending and also the fact that Takahashi was never able to invision his full 6 episode "epic", it still remains one of the best rpgs for the ages and quite frankly nothing has ever really came close, until Legend of heroes "trails". So for that, it deffinitly deserves its spot as number 1 on your list.
What you're saying is that it was years ahead of its time. And you're right. That's why it's so great. It had two limitations. 1 - Square Enix gave FF8 something like 10x the funding that Xenogears got. 2 - Hardware limitations. If they remade this game with the same characters, same soundtrack, same plot, similar battle mechanics, on current gen game systems, it would be hands down the best RPG ever made.

Until I do play Xenogears, my favorite non Final Fantasy RPGs on the PS1 are Star Ocean, Tales of Destiny, and Breath of Fire 3. Honorable mentions going to Azure Dreams, Chrono Cross, and Grandia.
GO PLAY XENOGEARS! YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY! That being said, I'd strongly suggest that in the first factory warehouse looking place to not run around and get into battles and instead first stop for a few minutes to appreciate Yasunori Mitsuda's masterpiece "Awakening". Why it was used as BGM for a place where you get lots of random battles is beyond me, as it's been a permanent fixture on my MP3 player for decades now!
i got Xenogears from my sisters EX bf. he said "Treat this like gold" this statement held onto me even today, as i have dove into most of these games on the list ie, SO2, CC, BOF3 and one gem i saw witch was valkrie profile, is a 2D JRPG platformer that had a pretty good combat turn based button mash system with combo meter to unleash even more devastating attacks also has a wonderful sound track same artist as SO2, pretty good cast of characters and alot of fully voiced, combat sequences / Story Vo's and these VO'S didnt skimp out because there was a good amount of emotional moments. some top notch artwork and a pretty hidden deep ending if you did things in the right order. or a standard ending if you missed one thing. also based off difficulty levels.
Xenogears was a game that just didn't show-up in stores where I lived. Imagine my surprise when I saw it on demo at my local used game store the weeks leading-up to Christmas. On Christmas day I was completely floored to see Xenogears as a gift, with my mother apologizing for buying it used instead of new - I didn't know she knew that used game shop. Once I popped-in disc 1 and played the opening movie for her, she stopped apologizing. She was just as mesmerized as I was when I saw it in the store those weeks earlier. Game had a weird history, though. Started as a sequel to Chrono Trigger, then the company decided to make it Final Fantasy VII (or vice-verse, I forget which), then decided to let it be it's own thing, then got its funding slashed because Final Fantasy VIII was going WAAAY over budget which is how Disc 2 became something similar to Evangelion episodes 25 & 26... Even still, there are things about this game that I only realized _years_ later. Fort Jasper? One of those floating laser platforms on the ship in the opening. Tower of Babel? Somehow escaped my notice that it was part of the body of the _same space ship._
@@GamingBroductions I would probably end up replacing Legend of Legaia with Vagrant story. Legend of Legaia was certainly a great game but I think it follows more in line with the hidden gem catigory. Well the combat system was unique, inovative for the time, the story and world it self could have been a bit more polished. Though I have to admit, I spent countless hrs drawing charts and notes for that game. The mechanics for the battle system was certainly alot of fun to play around with. If you perhaps didn't include Vagrant story because of how close it is to being recognized as a Final Fantasy title, then my next one in that list would be Valkrie Profile. But as I said, pretty close even down to the order in which your games are listed.

Xenogears is the best jrpg on the PS1 in my opinion, totally agree. Actually many of the games on your list I would agree with. Then when I heard cha la head ch la at the end of your video…. Subscriber earned bro!
People always say such and such game needs a remake. Do they really want the nostalgia ruined? Even the clunky controls and basic graphics in a lot of these games are some of the things that actually make them what they are. If they could successfully 'fix' some older games, that would work.
My favourite RPG on PSX is Dragon Warrior 7 and I think in Japan it's the biggest selling rpg on the PSX. Yeah FF7, FF8, and FF9 all outsold it worldwide but I think in Japan DQ7 was the top RPG. * just found an article saying DQ7 was the number 1 selling game in Japan for the original PS. :)

Great list. I have finished each one except Grandia and Lunar, but i'll get to it soon. I would say though, that i wouldnt think twice of knocking any one in the list off to make space for Vagrant Story. VS is the very definition of a flawed masterpiece in my opinion.
Xenogears was suppose to be FF7 but they decided to not do it because it was too dark with adult themes. I’m glad they decided to go ahead and make it with a different name.
Ps1 era is my favorite era for RPGs. My favorite being tales of destiny, I just love the pixel art graphics and the battle system. Good list though, lots of nostalgia.

Man, Chrono Cross is just the full 10/10. It takes true grit to depart so radically from a pretty much sacred predecessor, and true talent to make it such a brilliant game.
Great but not 10/10
-Because of many characters a lot of them lack a great backgroundstory and character development.
-Characters feel samy in combat
-The story is great but the pacing terrible. 90% of the story is explained in the last 5% of the game
yes 10/10
10/10
I kinda got PSX tied with SNES for my favorite classic system but jeez these types of channels really remind you just how well balanced their repertoire’s really were
@@Mintcar923Changing to TV here, but if you like space stuff in general, watch The Expanse.
Legend of Legaia was one of my favorites, and should really give it another playthru.
My best friend owned it when we were younger (One of the few I didn;t buy myself until I was older). It definitely is one of the harder RPG's for young minds but really captivating once you understand how to progress.
Very sad that the brilliant Vagrant Story isn't on this list.. :(
It has some of the best storytelling, atmosphere, and writing I've seen in a game! It's main issue is the clunky interface, but once you get past that it offers some incredibly deep and layered gameplay. Not to mention it was a technical triumph on the PS1, and is easily one of the most impressively looking games on the system!
The reason I didn't get into it was the slot machine leveling up.
@@tarnetskygge Vagrant Story is not too close to FF.
Xenogears and Vagrant Story are still the best in PS1 for me. I love the old golden era of PS gaming. Hoping for a remake for these two.
Suikoden 1 and 2 were my personal favourites and you could link the two games making them feel more epic overall.
If Xenogears wasn't rushed, it could have absolutely been the greatest game of all time.
@@Luckeh_ man, I'm so bummed because Xenogears is my favorite RPG story of all time and I finally got my hands on an English translated copy of Perfect Works last year and it was worth the 22 year wait 👌🏾
I was playing through Xenoblade Chronicles for the switch and man....
I stopped playing it after the part where the *SPOILERS BELOW*

@@xcaluhbration
I really gotta read Perfect Works!
Regarding Xenoblade, by princess you’re probably referring to Melia, but… I’m not really sure who are the “betrayers of the crown”… maybe you’re talking about the Bionite Order?
Well, the story definitely gets better and has a pretty Xeno finale, but I agree with you that the character development is pretty lackluster in the first Xenoblade…
Personally, I prefer Xenoblade 2, even though it’s pretty slow and with some shonen anime jokes here and there at the beginning of the game, when the story picks up it’s really really good, with great world building and some of the best developed characters in the whole franchise. It’s also full of Xenogears and Xenosaga references that make it even better in my book! :P
The thing is, originally, Xenoblade 1 was gonna be called “Monado: Beginning of the World” and was completely isolated from the rest of the Xeno games.
I think playing Xenogears at such an impressionable age as 14 really screwed me up for a lot of other stories in games and movies because by the time I played Suikoden 2 I finished it and was like "Meh".
Agreed
I grew up in the PS1 JRPG era and Star Ocean 2 is easily my favorite non FF rpg (Secret of Mana is a close second although it's on the SNES). I graduated to online MMOs around the time PS2 came out and I never looked back.
I really love the Item creation aspect. SO2's method of doing it is by far the best to me, and still unduplicated to this day (even in the sequels). That and who doesn't love it when you go into battle and Dias Flac starts off by saying "Piece of junk!"
What mmo are you playing today? Just curious. I hope you're having a nice weekend.
Great list man. 90s RPGs.... hard to make a top 10 list IMO. From Saga Frontier to the Tales of series, and a bunch of hidden gems like thousand arms, glad I was able to experience the golden age as a teenager.
I don't see enough people mention Thousand Arms. That game was so 🔥 back in the day. Truly surprised me back then.
Dude yes thank you, fairly new JRPG fan and needed a video like this for new titles
I'm glad you put Grandia on your list. I love that game and am now playing the Nintendo Switch HD rerelease.
Dude. You are a godsend. Thanks to your list and compilations. Makes me wanna look for my old games. Keep it up brother.
Damn man. I miss Xenogears too. I hope someday we will have the remake. Or at least the complete edition for disc 2 perhaps.
@@dranegameplay nvr goign to happen, look it up,
Legaia was simply awesome!
I played it when I was a Kid, with my brother.
Truly a gem
Xenogears was a pretty good game as well!
legend of legaia, mana, and dragoon are one of the most underrated games in psx history imo
Grandia is so good that I picked it up on Steam! I wish they'd do Grandia Xtreme, though. I really loved combining eggs for super powered attacks.
Well said my friend.
Wow. I totally forgot about Arc the Lad until now. You just unlocked a part of my brain that hadn’t been accessed in 20 years.
Nothing beats the JRPG era of original Playstation! Thank you for bringing us back to the best of its era
idk that any game has made me feel as many emotions as i did while playing xenogears. think the only thing that would come close is the xenoblade series and its wild to see were core of those games originated from
Outstanding list. Brought me back to my childhood. Great #1 and great reasons for it to be your personal favorite.
To me best rpg games of all time are Star Ocean 2 and Lufia 2, nothing comes even close to these 2 legends.
XENOGEARS!!! My favorite game. We have similar tastes so I decided to be your 199th subscriber. I still think about Xenogears to this day too
Thanks for subscribing first of all, haha it sounds like you have some great taste!
Breath Of Fire 3 is legit one of the greatest JRPGs of all time IMO
Star Ocean 2nd story..... Ahhhh yes that game kicked the crap outta me and I loved every moment of it. ❤️
The soundtrack, characters, world and battle system was a lot of fun for me to experiment with.
I really wish they would bring back the Suikoden series. I loved the first two games. I never got to play the later ones, but the original two were definitely in my top five JRPGs of ALL TIME (along with Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy IV).
I played all the games on your list. Thumbs up . . . . nostalgia indeed
ahh i remember seeing final fantasy VII as greatest hits, remembering the amazing commercials years ago. it set off a FFVII addiction for me and my friends, we all got it, played it for dozens of hours. one of the best memories i have
Personally Tales of destiny is my favorite and most impactful game for me on the PS1. but i own 3 others out of 10 on this list! truly great games man.
The “found it” popping up next to the composer was a nice touch!
Nice list. I (or my brothers) played almost all of these. And yeah, soundtracks for Xenogears, chrono cross and Grandia are amazing
I really loved the aesthetic and charm those games provide, I just wanted more damnit! lol
Well there is Dragon Song I guess... but we don’t really speak of that
I cried when I heard the Xeno Gears Soundtrack,...Nostalgic, Dark, and Sadness can be felt. I can't believe it's been more than 15 years...
Totally agree with you regarding Chrono Cross. It's so great to know that I'm not alone with those opinions. Thanks.
My first RPG experience was also on the PS1. It was Beyond The Beyond. Most didn't care for it but I certainly did. Still play it this very day. FF7 and Suikoden 1/2 were the others I played on the PS1. I think I bought FF9 but I don't recall playing it much if ever.
You missed Parasite Eve... but you got most everything else so well done
If we would have done some honorable mentions it would have made it there for sure. Very good game. There’s so many great RPGs on the PlayStation that we couldn’t just include them all unfortunately
I'll always love and have immense nostalgia for the NES, SNES, PS1, GAMEBOY, Game-Gear, PC and even N64 era's of RPG-Gaming until the day I die!
We need new games from all of these IP’s. I wish Square would make it happen.
1. Chrono Cross, absolutely my fav.
2. Suikoden II
3. Legend Of Legaia
4. Vagrant Story for the idea itself.

Neat list! I still need to play Xenogears, I keep hearing so many good things about it that I feel like I missed out on something really good.
I played all jrpg of your list. What a good taste. Vargrant Story and Valkieire Profile left in that list.

i got Xenogears from my sisters EX bf. he said "Treat this like gold" this statement held onto me even today, as i have dove into most of these games on the list ie, SO2, CC, BOF3 and one gem i saw witch was valkrie profile, is a 2D JRPG platformer that had a pretty good combat turn based button mash system with combo meter to unleash even more devastating attacks also has a wonderful sound track same artist as SO2, pretty good cast of characters and alot of fully voiced, combat sequences / Story Vo's and these VO'S didnt skimp out because there was a good amount of emotional moments. some top notch artwork and a pretty hidden deep ending if you did things in the right order. or a standard ending if you missed one thing. also based off difficulty levels.
It still boggles my mind that it hasn't been officially released in Europe in any form. That along with Parasite Eve 1.
WOW, this is practically identical to my top 10. First time I have ever seen someone come that close, you have really great tastes.
Nice! Sounds like you have some quality taste as well. Now you got me curious since ours are so close, where does yours differ?

All of these games are on my backlog, Xenogears is on my priority though. Didn't have any of these when I was young so I picked them up after university and when working, so I still need to go through the rest of them! Great console though! Looming forward to many of these jrpgs
The one game I am sad no one has put on these types of lists, is one I love still to this day and that is Beyond the Beyond😢
Awesome list my friend but have you ever played Star Ocean: Until The End of Time? Easily one of the best RPG's out there from the PS2
I have to imagine the only reason you left out Vagrant Story is because its status as a FF is kind of a gray area.
But it's outright not an FF game. I have never heard anyone say it's status is a not-FF game was murky.
A decent list. Not the same list I would have chosen, but pretty close. Nice vid.

Legend of Dragoon was my first RPG on the PS1 and it was awesome. Difficult with a complex plot. But awesome.
1 suikoden 2
2 Chrono cross
3 suikoden 1
Etc
People always say such and such game needs a remake.
Do they really want the nostalgia ruined?
Even the clunky controls and basic graphics in a lot of these games are some of the things that actually make them what they are.
If they could successfully 'fix' some older games, that would work.
Another great list video. Thanks for putting this together!

Nice list. I only played Lunar, Grandia, and Chrono Cross from your top 10. PS1 was king of RPG's.
Your Suikoden 2 rank is definitely heresy.
Glad you mentioned Wild Arms 2 though, such an overlooked gem.
Perfect list, im guilty of not playing grandia, and cant remember if i beat wild arms 2. But i completely agree with xenogears being the best jrpg of ps1
Got mad at first since you put Suikoden 2 too low IMO, but Xenogears at #1 makes it better. Great list!
Missing from the list, and should have been in the #2 slot is *VAGRANT STORY.* The game is magnificent. Otherwise, this is a great list!
Not a traditional RPG
BEAUTIFULLY DONE VIDEO!!!
