It was a good game, but if I’m being honest, I enjoyed FFVIII more. That being said, the 90’s were a hotbed for great RPG’s, and it’s not easy to pick favorites when you remember having so much fun with all of them! It truly was a great time to be a console gamer.
Seeing Suikoden 2 and FF VIII on the list makes me happy. I also played FF VIII as my first RPG ever and suikoden 2 as the second. Boy, I don't play any other genre anymore since those days, what a great introduction to the genre with those 2 games. :)
Great list, our list is pretty similar. Ranking the later half of the list was really hard lol. 1990 - Probably Dragon Quest 4, but I am not a huge DQ fan. 1991 - Final Fantasy IV 1992 - Lunar Silver Star 1993 - Phantasy Star IV 1994 - Final Fantasy VI 1995 - Chrono Trigger (poor Terranigma, it deserves some credit) 1996 - Mario RPG (according to my research Tactics Ogre came out in 95 otherwise it would take this spot) 1997 - Final Fantasy VII 1998 - Xenogears (I´m sorry Suikoden 2) 1999 - Chrono Cross
Amazing list - I would just swap out for some of my personal favourite games of all time. 1993 - Secret Of Mana. 1995 - Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. 1998 - Xenogears. 1999 - Chrono Cross
Ff8 was my first RPG as well. Hearing you talk about it was like tapping into some deep locked away memory. We were lucky to grow up with these. Ps. Xenogears will always be king 😁
Chrono Cross was most certainly the best JRPG of 1999, but if we include western RPGs, Planescape: Torment was not only the best of 1999 but also probably the best of the 90s.
I actually agree with many of these. If we are going by NA releases though I would put Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen (Still my all time favorite console SRPG) for 95 and Suikoden I in the 96 slot.
Aside from the Sea of Stars demo, Phantasy Star 4 is the only JRPG I've ever played through in French. The writing's actually better than in the official English localization, but the guy messed up the technique names. Using Japanese release years to get around the Phantasy Star 4 conundrum was an inspired choice.
its sad that breath of fire never got recognition it deserved. I guess breath of fire 3 got overshadowed by final finatasy which came out in the same year (1997).
Haha one or the other. Suikoden played a huge part in my life. I ran a highly successful RP site for it for years. I actually only played xeno for the first time in 2009. Things may have been different If I played them the other way around.
Hellfire rpgs is known as the Suikoden guy to me, found his ch through suikoden, so it should be no surprise… anyway my 1998 game is Pokémon Red, billion dollar turned-based rpg franchise
I never played any dragon quest so my 1990 JRPG of the year would be well looks like none came out that year that I played. I also never played super Mario RPG so would have to pick wild ARMs. I would pick BoF 3 and FFT over FF7 personally. Both hold up graphically much better and were more fun in my opinion. Have to majorly disagree with FF8 as it's one of my least favorite Final Fantasies. I would say Grandia (ps port) or lunar 2 or Chrono cross... Nope ogre battle 64. Totally agree with FF4, Lunar, PS4, FF6, CT, and Suikoden 2 Hahaha Y2K....
I didn't really start playing RPGs until 1997 but I've played all these at some point way later in the future, lol. 1990 Dragon Quest IV, Final Fantasy III (i like it.) 1991(Year I was born) Final Fantasy IV, Ys III 1992 Final Fantasy V, Dragon Quest V, Lunar Silver Star 1993 Phantasy Star IV, Secret of Mana 1994 Earthbound, Final Fantasy VI 1995 Chrono Trigger, Lufia II 1996 Persona 1, Suikoden 1 1997 Final Fantasy VII, Breath of Fire 3 1998 Final Fantasy Tactics, Suikoden 2 1999 Lunar 2, Final Fantasy VIII The 90s were jammed packed with some great RPGs. So I put two per year that's how many came out that I love.
1990 : Ys 1&2 1991 : FF4 1992 : E.V.O.: Search for Eden, I guess you can call it a jrpg? 1993 : Secret of Mana 1994 : FF6 1995 : Chrono Trigger.. but wow... 1995 had Romancing Saga 3, Terranigma, Tactics Ogre LUCT, Suikoden 1, Tales of Phantasia, Langrisser, Front Mission, Arc the Lad, Lufia 2, Secret of Evermore... and more!?!? What happened in 1995. Holy cow. We could make a top 10 of just that year. 1996 : Star Ocean 1 - A flawed game, but I still obsess about it to this day. 1997 : Final Fantasy Tactics - The truth is that I never played it and I also never played FF7. So the award should go to something I played- thing is, as a kid, I would mostly only be allowed to watch other people play, and FFTactics made a huge impact on me. I still remember vividly the sound effects, music and characters, like Thundergod Cid, Agrias, Delita and the Mustard Man 1998 : Suikoden 2 1999 : Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete, why not.
So nice to see Lunar and Phantasy Star getting love!
Well deserved!
Love to see Suikoden get some shine. I loved the first 3 of that series
For 1999, I would choose Legend of Dragoon.
It was a good game, but if I’m being honest, I enjoyed FFVIII more.
That being said, the 90’s were a hotbed for great RPG’s, and it’s not easy to pick favorites when you remember having so much fun with all of them! It truly was a great time to be a console gamer.
@@themustachioedman ff8 I would agree is better than LoD but def not FF7. IMO most overrated FF ever.
Came to hear you mention Suikoden II😊
You know it!
Seeing Suikoden 2 and FF VIII on the list makes me happy. I also played FF VIII as my first RPG ever and suikoden 2 as the second. Boy, I don't play any other genre anymore since those days, what a great introduction to the genre with those 2 games. :)
Oh wow, sounds like our stories are very similar. The BEST two games to start with.
Same for me!! With one exeption. My first was Suikoden 1, then ff8 and then Suikoden 2. Which remains my all time favourite after all this time.
Final Fantasy VII and Suikoden II are not just my favourite games of 1997 & 1998 but my two favourite games of all time. Amazing top 10 list :)
Finally seeing this! Great list - so many amazing JRPGs back then!
Thanks! Best era!
my childhood decade! Needs Breath of fire 3 of course :P
Loved BOF3, but didn't quote make the cut for the year.
@@HellFireRPGs Always nice to see everyone's different opinions of the best of the decade you got very good taste in general as well.
Great list, our list is pretty similar. Ranking the later half of the list was really hard lol.
1990 - Probably Dragon Quest 4, but I am not a huge DQ fan.
1991 - Final Fantasy IV
1992 - Lunar Silver Star
1993 - Phantasy Star IV
1994 - Final Fantasy VI
1995 - Chrono Trigger (poor Terranigma, it deserves some credit)
1996 - Mario RPG (according to my research Tactics Ogre came out in 95 otherwise it would take this spot)
1997 - Final Fantasy VII
1998 - Xenogears (I´m sorry Suikoden 2)
1999 - Chrono Cross
Yup. So many great games missing out
Interesting, because 1990 is one of the best years for JRPGs and you choose a series you don’t like.
You can almost see your Neoseeker favourites tab within this list. Haha
Anyway, thanks for the video.
Amazing list - I would just swap out for some of my personal favourite games of all time. 1993 - Secret Of Mana. 1995 - Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. 1998 - Xenogears. 1999 - Chrono Cross
That was an elegant selection.
What a great list! so many good games, i love all of them. Thanks for the content Hell Fire
Welcome 🙏 🤗
Choosing between Xenogears and Suikoden 2 for best of 1998 impossible, you are a braver man than i sir.
Ff8 was my first RPG as well. Hearing you talk about it was like tapping into some deep locked away memory. We were lucky to grow up with these.
Ps. Xenogears will always be king 😁
I totally thought that Dragon Quest V would take 1992. That was unexpected.
Yeah, I was with you up to 96, Wild Arms for me, easily.
2 of my all time favourite games chrono trigger and final fantasy VII are both on the list and for good reasons they are so fantastic.
Mate, how amazing were the 90s? Most of my top 10 jrpgs were from this era
@@HellFireRPGs it was so amazing I wish I was actually born in that time period honestly. So many classics
Great video, ffviii is my first rpg too but Chrono Cross was best rpg of 1999 so far
Chrono Cross was most certainly the best JRPG of 1999, but if we include western RPGs, Planescape: Torment was not only the best of 1999 but also probably the best of the 90s.
Do the 1980s. I bet that would be a good video and challenge. Do every year in the decade.
I actually agree with many of these. If we are going by NA releases though I would put Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen (Still my all time favorite console SRPG) for 95 and Suikoden I in the 96 slot.
You forgotten about
Aydin Chronicles
Star Ocean
Legend of Legaia
Grundia
I’ve seen all from 1980-Now
1996 Lufia II Rise of the Sinistrals
1998 Xenogears
I'm so glad BOF3 is in here!
98, Breath of Fire 3 for me, however I've never played any Suikoden game.
I'm disheartened Xenogears ain't on this list, but hey Suikoden II is fucking awesome too and Final Fantasy VI is one of the GOATs.
It was a hard list to make, haha
its sad that breath of fire never got recognition it deserved. I guess breath of fire 3 got overshadowed by final finatasy which came out in the same year (1997).
The 90's was only 10 years ago right... right....😭
More Love to FF 8 👊
👊
Every games in this list is top notch... but come on, change the 1998 order lol, s2 is good, but its no xeno
Haha one or the other. Suikoden played a huge part in my life. I ran a highly successful RP site for it for years. I actually only played xeno for the first time in 2009. Things may have been different If I played them the other way around.
@@HellFireRPGs probably lol i played both around the same time, both where inpactfull, but xeno just hit like a brick wall

I miss Super Size from McDonalds
It wasn't the 90s, but did you ever play Rogue Galaxy?
Nope. Never got around to playing that one. On my to do list!
I think if you said Mystic Quest was your favourite, you would be objectively wrong.
Agreed
I didn't really start playing RPGs until 1997 but I've played all these at some point way later in the future, lol.
1990 Dragon Quest IV, Final Fantasy III (i like it.)

1998 Final Fantasy Tactics, Suikoden 2
1999 Lunar 2, Final Fantasy VIII
The 90s were jammed packed with some great RPGs. So I put two per year that's how many came out that I love.
Yeah I only started in the late 90s and had to go back to play them all.
