  • This gravel driveway was in desperate need of a touch from the CAT Power Rake. Once the road base was prepped Big Mack dumped 18 ton of rock on it for the finishing touch…

    I have had a Harley Power rake since early 2000's and I agree that is a needed attachement and works great on driveways, top soil and yard prep, and it will grind ice. I do several parking lots through the winter and it keeps the ice shaved and less slippery. Next and also needed is the SR3 rake from ABI. Very good finish rake that is easier to learn then a power rake. ABI has several great videos showing the difference and when to use which one. I use the SR3 rake more now but still own two power rakes.

    Both access roads are on a par with each other. The owner was obviously taking an interest in the other road and decided to let you do something about it !!
    I have not seen any Harley rakes or similar on this side of the pond, I have seen box blades and tractor mounted attachments that do the same job. They are definitely a handy attachment to have in your arsenal 💪💪💪
    And your tripod survived better than your camrea, have a look at DJI, there are some channels that use them, they may work out better for you, Sam

    • @tristardiggin
      @tristardiggin  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That would be cool to have one on the Ventrac. If you run the rake over it after the new rock it would tend to mix it with the base rock that was there. Which wouldn’t necessarily be bad except it wouldn’t be as clean. After a few rains it will really harden up and look nice.

    Great video Sam! Quick question, up here in Western PA we usually use “57’s” or #2 limestone and top with fine chips, or sometimes use what is called modified-it has dust in it so the driveway “locks in” after you run on it. Is that what you used for this drive? Also awesome message and great to hear you bring attention to the Very Near Rapture. Thanks for what you do

    • @tristardiggin
      @tristardiggin  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pretty much the same method is used here. On a new road I generally do a 1.5” to 2” rock and then top with crusher run which has a lot of fines in it to help compact it. I did use crusher run on this driveway…

You are 100% correct about a power rake, that thing is worth it's weight in gold for doing yards. I try to do a pass north/south, then east/west, and diagonally if possible. I always learn from your great videos. With finesse you skim off the tops of the high spots until they are gone. Another great demonstration! Your videos always show me that less is more and slow is fast. Your work always turns out with a better grade and takes much less time in the end than taking out big chunks. That is the finesse that you show and I am trying to learn (slowly) from you.
      Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!😊
      As to the comment about using float mode, I’d have to actually try float mode myself in this situation, but empirically it would seem that float mode would be the opposite of what you would want to do, and what you did here. I’d want to keep the bucket high as I believe that you were doing so that only the tops of the “whoop de doos” are cut, and the bucket does not float down and cut any of the material in the valleys.

    • @tristardiggin
      @tristardiggin  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Really depends on the condition of the road. If it’s a new road and fairly firm 4”s of a 1.5” to 2” rock would work well and then topcoat with 4” of crusher run or 57’s. An existing road in good shape could be reworked and add a couple inches of crusher run or 57’s. Lots of variables when adding rock.
