I did the same thing unknowingly. We were driving in many mudholes and steep stuff, gravel etc together with a 105 and a Patrol GU, all were similarly modified with "33 MT's and 2" lift etc, pulled the GU out of bog (driver error)etc and i did everything they did in "high" until a very steep gravely hill I just couldn't get up, why? When somebody noticed "your front wheels are not working", a wire on my FJ62 series, 3F, auto Sahara(no lockers) had broken on the transfer case, so in high it didnt engage the front prop shaft. Pretty amazing what those things will do in two wheel drive. I now own a hundred series (LX470) as well, my prefered ride is still my old 1986 "62" Ive owned for 25 years A simple no BS vehicle that goes everywhere and gets home too!
You gotta love the fact that a 40 year-old land cruiser in two wheel drive still beats the brand-new Prado full of tech 😂😂😂😂😂 front solid axle with those big tyres gives bigger advantage than a brand-new car with traction control. They don’t make them they used to. More money for less. Soccer mums car.
what a stupid comment, the solid front axle is irrelevant if its in 2wd. how do you know he was in 2wd in the 60? Id be willing to bet the 60 is locked.
Great video to point out complexities of new vehicles and how easy it is not activate relevant controls….we all do it! Looking forward to seeing how the 250 performs with some basic mods and once your used to it. Where abouts was the powerlines track?
Once you lock the center diff you should also pick one of the offroad modes. For what you were doing the rock crawl mode would be the one to pick. I assume these new models have these driving modes.
You looked a lot happier wheeling Jef than the Prado. I think you nailed it when you pretty much said Jef will be around in another 42 years, and Prado will be long gone to the wreckers in the sky.
Congrats on the new LC! Do you have the model with the round headlights in Aus? Also all trim levels here in Canada come with a rear locker as standard.
Congratulations on the new rig. It's a shame they didn't offer the Tanami Taupe on the GX, that way all your 4 Toyota's would have been similar colours. But white actually suits it.
Even without centre diff lock the crawl control can work fine. I have seen videos from America where crawl control distributes power to spinning wheels affectively without centre diff lock but ford bronco 35inch tyres requires to lock rear differential lock
Great sum up and first test. The prado went as well as I expected. You can tell the 60 was built with harder wheeling in mind and use on very crazy roads.
@OverlandTravellers yeah will be things to learn with it, but there is compromise made to make the prado better on road that limit it off road. That said for the vast majority of prado owners they won't get the limits of a stock prado
White definitely looks good, next time steep downhill use Auto in M1 mode and downhill assist instead of crawl. When will GVM upgrade be available for towing ?
Nice one, is that the frosted or glacier white? It's be good to see a review of 250 inside and out and what features you dont think will last the distance
@OverlandTravellers Seems like an unnecessary complication (in a base model, especially)! Seems like more weight to cart around, and a whole other level of complexity added to the vehicle. Do you think it will affect reliability in the long term?
@ mate that’s a great question and one we won’t have the answer to for a few months or years. We will try and put as many kms as we can on this thing in lots of environments so let’s see how it goes.
also... is there any use at all to the 110L tank they fit? (both our vehicles have 90L+180L) Better hope that Long Ranger get on board bloody soon. And then that will require a new rear bar and wheel carrier.
New Toyota 4WD on a gravel track. No Warranty for you. 😅 Good video to compare new and old, maybe the prado will do better next time. (Push the button Max!)
@@jerryfrench2981 haha I know I was so bloody annoyed I didn’t do it I was reading the manual after and realised my mistake. I’ll have to go and do the exact spot again and see how it goes I think it will smash it
@@OverlandTravellers It shows 🤣. I think every Prado and 80 series on uses a all wheel drive and a centre diff lock button. Also - I'm sure you'll go over Jeff with a fine-tooth comb, but front left wheel looks awfully wobbly when going over the rough stuff. Might be a tie-rod or something?
For that money you would have been way better off doing a custom build on a 120/150 Prado like Kaon have recently done with their own test mule. Modern complex tech in these new models is going to be a nightmare in due course when out in the bush. ( you will need to buy a decent OBD scan tool as a must have essential item in your tool kit for sure) and no doubt lifting the suspension & adding bigger tyres is going to mess the eletronics programmed into the ECU and also play havoc with the trans also negating completely 7th & 8th gears. Seriously these new Prado' have really been built & targetted for city use as a mums car to cart the family & kids to school & sports & occasional basic beach camping trip on firm sand
Fact is the 60 shouldn't be on the road. It was burning both white smoke (unburnt fuel) and black smoke (also un burnt fuel). Its motors like that still on the road that have caused new buyers to have to have dpf filters and Ad-blue. That the 300 doesn't have Ad-blue - I'm guessing its later design is a lot cleaner? I don't know why Toyota is selling such an old dirty noisy 4 cylinder across 70, Hilux and Prado that Toyota is keeping it going via adding Ad-blue. They all need a better motor IMO and instead they are chasing statistics to the cost of rear storage area due to a battery that seems to do little accept please the committees that cobbled that compromise together. I'd buy one tomorrow if Toyota put the 3.3 v6 into the Prado with flat storage, no ad blue and put some proper fuel capacity in it too please. A beautiful platform ruined by committees IMO.
A great comparison indeed. You've shown just how good a 60 Series Landcruiser is in 2WD compared to the modern day 4WD is. I will keep my 1990 4WD. I have no desire to ever own a new vehicle, whether it be a 2 WD or 4WD vehicle. They are overpriced pieces of crap!!
