So I've watched literally hundreds of golf videos and I think this is the best one I've ever seen.
Thanks Steve! Hope it helps your game!
I spent $2000 to go to conman, Martin Chuck's, four day golf school and I did not get information this solid. He promised he'd give us a lecture about the 10 non-negotiable principals of the golf swing, but he never did. He promised us he'd give us trackman sessions, but he never did. He had "Goofy" a high school golfer watch & video us and play golf with us. "Goofy" seldom landed his drives in the fairway and sometimes missed greens with his wedge. What a "Michael Edwards!
You, with your, "Home Depot" aim stick video and this right hand bent back/left hand bowed video did more for free than "Goofy" and Chuck, "The Ali Dia of Golf", was there but only gave me one tip: "Tee the ball back in your stance.", one critique: "You came here with a slice; now, you are hooking the ball.", & one compliment: "Your turn is pretty good." Chuck didn't even know that I came to the school with a pull or a pull hook. What a Jordan Belfort!
Quite brilliant. Been playing for 35 years and never had this explained in such easy and informative detail. I've known about the left wrist bowed but always struggled to keep it there in the backswing let alone the downswing so played with a fade all my life. I play off 5 so doing most things right, but this has opened my eyes totally. Particularly the bit where you say 'if you don't like the feel of bowing your left wrist, move the the right wrist' obvious stuff of course but it simply never occurred to me!! I always felt awkward bowing the left so kinda gave up on it & compensated with a very strong grip and very closed stance to bat it down the line!! Tks for this man, really appreciate it. Russell, a brit.
Love to hear that, Russell! Hope it helps your golf this year!!!
Hi Eric . I've followed your channel now since the beginning and you've answered every question I've posted just like everyone else's question. As far as I know your one of only 2 youtubers who have high subs that answer every question. Thanks and i mean it for respecting us who follow you.
Thank you my friend! Doing my best to try and help best I can....thanks for being here with us!
Eric, you have explained a tricky subject so clearly and in a concise manner without getting lost in detail. Love it.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed this one!
Eric your instructions are right on.I was told by a PGA tour player 40 years ago to fell like my right hand was holding a plate in it like a waiter at the top of my back swing, same same how ever you get there!
Love it !
Eric, I must have watched a thousand golf videos in the past years, but never have I seen any which explained the effect of the wrist angle in the downswing this clearly. With your position comparisons I can see how and why I can never make it to impact with the vertical shaft position.
I finally understand how important it is not to cup my wrist and the seriousness of the chain reaction which ensues. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. At 8:36 I can clearly see that there is no way I can make successful contact unless I work on that wrist.
Thank you so very much.
Love it---my pleasure :)
DJ does it, Morikawa does it, I’ve tried to emulate a fraction of it, you just happened to have the patience and skill to explain it where I have a better idea how to build on it. Respect.
:)
I've watched quite a few golf coaches on TH-cam and I think you are the best. A lot of teachers do a decent job of connecting the movements to the ball flight. You add the extra step of connecting the movements to the club face, swing plane, etc., and connecting that to the ball flight. That really seems to be the missing ingredient that makes your content so much better than everything else that's out there.
Thanks, Chris! Appreciate the kind words
Very well spoken and the best part is the details you go into
eric and mark crossfield are the best teachers on youtube.
Appreciate the kind words!
Honestly? This is one of the best and most important lessons/informations that i‘ve ever got! Thuesday lockdown is over here and i‘ll be out on the course again, will give you feedback afterwards, but i know already this will change my game dramatically! many thanks, great job and great videos! stay well, sincery Thomas
Thanks for the kind words and support, Thomas!
Plph
Eric: Thanks for all of your videos. I appreciate all the tips and how you try to simplify things and not make anything one size fits all. A few weeks ago I had the worst case of the shanks that I have ever had. I was very frustrated not being able to get back my swing for weeks, but looking back it was probably the best that could have happened to me as it forced me to really evaluate my swing. Up until this point my swing was good enough to show up to the course make contact and keep the ball somewhat in play with once in a while hitting a lucky shot. I was happy, because it was at least good enough to play in the low 90s but I knew that I didn't have consistent swing technique. After my swing broke down I started watching videos on TH-cam trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I watched your video with the two drills to help overcome the Shanks first. This got me back to making some contact and it got me focused on creating a good takeaway. Even though I was starting to make some contact, I still was very inconsistent and felt lost when doing full swing. I started watching more of your videos including this one on the wrist angles and discovered that even after doing a straight takeaway and trying to reenter in a straighter path that I was cupping my wrist on the top of my back swing and coming down very open. Bowing my left wrist and experimenting with this made all of the difference! I played last weekend and had one of my best rounds and I feel like I finally found a set up and a swing that I can use with all of my clubs. For me focusing on initially have a straight and low takeaway and beginning to bow my wrist early in the takeaway and maintaining the bowing sensation all through out has helped me create consistency I have never had in my life. I don't feel intimidated by different types of clubs anymore as I just focus on being consistent with my set up, takeaway, wrist angles, and remaining committed to coming down with the wrist angle bowed. Sorry for the long comment. Just wanted to really thank you!
So happy to hear the videos have helped your game, Luis!! Appreciate you watching the channel and thanks so much for being here with us! :)
This is the holy grail for real. It's very difficult to master, but once you do, magic happens. This is the way.
:)
After years of fighting a slice I never really understood the difference between cocking the right wrist and hinging it. Since this video I'm now hinging it and not only hitting most fairway centers but hitting all my clubs farther including a whopping 30 yards plus with my driver! Thanks so much!
This is the way
This really works! I feel like I'm making such solid contact. My misses are mainly left now, which is a good thing.
Love it!
Now find the feel that works for you in the structure of knowing your wrist action needs to fit within this general schema. That's brilliant teaching man. Well done.
👊
Thank you!
I've been playing golf for 2 years now. Driver is generally 'ok' for me, but my irons have been horrific. I have spent a massive amount of time watching youtube, going to the range, and some private instruction. Still wildly inconsistent with my irons, and a terrible short-hitter on top of that. Until I discovered this video and went down the bowed-wrist hole. Now I hit most irons accurately and have added about 30 yards to all my clubs. Thank you Eric!!
Great to hear this!!
This truly is a game changer. Started to do this a couple months back and completely change my game. I started to bow immediately on when I start my backswing because I could never get the timing right any other way. Went from a slicer who shot low 100 to in the high 80’s. Feels weird at first but once you get it, it’s money. Golf is so much fun now. Also improved distance immediately. Eric, the one thing that is odd is I do this with every single club in the bag but driver. For some reason I couldn’t get the same consistency with driver doing this but for whatever reason I can not hit my driver so much better. Not sure why that is since I don’t bow my wrist with that club. Maybe I subconsciously cup my right wrist more as habit, not really sure. Great Video!!
Glad to hear of the progress my friend!
Hope you get your driver sorted!
All the best!
That was probably the best golf instruction on wrist angles I’ve ever seen and definitely videos of yourself is so key great job sir kudos to you
Appreciate it, Andrew!
When I say this revived my golf swing and brought my passion for the game back, I mean it... Great vid and you have a new subscriber in me
Love to hear this!! Appreciate you being here with us! :)
I swear sometimes you are following my game...this is a fantastic video. Thanks!
:) Thanks, Tim!
Thank you for honest teaching!
The funny thing with golf is there is no magic fix for everyone. You find a technique that offers additional control, and adjust it to fit you.
Many teachers would just say "bow the lead wrist". You show it is much more nuanced than that.
👊Appreciate it my friend! Hope this one helps your game!
Continued to be the most informative golf video provider!
Appreciate it my friend
Great Vid Eric... u nailed it. I think this was Hogan's "secret", controlling the wrist angles (big muscles vs small muscles). I've been playing for 40+ years (former PGA Club Pro) & your content & teaching style is second to none. Glad I found your channel!
Really appreciate the kind words and support Theodore! Agreed!
I love how you said that you can try adding bow in different parts of the swing, I was always under the impression that it was a all or nothing deal but I can’t wait to try this out! Thanks as always Eric your the bomb!
You got it my friend!
As a retired PGA Teaching Professional , I’d be remiss if I didn’t comment on this : In my own swing I have for 55 years or so , rotated the clubhead w/ my left wrist and never really arrived at the top on the correct plane for me ! The few times that I did this “ holy grail “ flexing & extending of my wrists into my net w/ my driver , I hit is so solid and repeatable , that I keyed in this video and am so impressed ! Thanks friend , John
:) Love it, John! Great to have you here with us!
@@CogornoGolf , thanks Eric ! If you happen to have access to a “ Momentus “ Swing Trainer ,( I have the short break down travel model ) , you’ll find it doesn’t allow a rotation of the hands that I mentioned and gets the flexion / extension started ! John
For the first time I took 1 of these videos to heart and put it into action on the driving range, I didn't perfect it because 1 range session isn't going to fix everything... but I did hit some AMAZING shots that went straight or left. and ill add my shots have NEVER went left. Im trying to bow the wrist at setup but the backswing feels weird, and its hard for me to time bowing the wrist at the top. trying to find a happy medium but im impressed so far.
Love to hear this!
Now my ball goes too much left, I’m doing that since 3 month. Now what to do? Placing my ball more in front of my stance?
Eric’s tip with the bowed wrists and the tip/video were to place your center of mass DL (do not place too much weight to you heels) made a huge impact for me. Thanks Eric!
Same issue with me
Hey Carsten!
Thats a great start! Exactly what you want.
How to not go left next?
-Get more shaft lean (handle more forward) with less active release pattern.
If you used to open the door 40* in the backswing you needed to close it 40* in the downswing.
Now you are only opening it 20* during backswing but still closing it 40* on the way down (too much)
Close it less on way down.
How?
-More shaft lean, less arm rotation.
Would you say less release at the bottom so you don’t hit it left or hook it?
Thx Eric, nice illustration with one hand and then the other to see outside in and inside out dynamic. Been working on bowed wrist thing....works like a charm but could not figure out how it worked. Now I think can really trust my swing!
Our pleasure, Roger! Hope it serves you well my friend!
Love this! I started using one of those magnets for the club face and it was mind blowing to see the real angles of the club face and totally changed my approach to alignment and setup which by itself has made a huge difference!!!
Def an eye opener, Daniel!
Eric this is pure Gold. I've been working on this for a while. 2 questions when I practice this I get an inside takeaway. And why not set up with more forward shaft lean . A more bowed wrist. ? Thanks
Hey!
1. Takeaway....so you are overdoing one or more of the elements (forearm rotation, wrist bow, shoulder rotation, etc)
Takeaway specifics:
th-cam.com/video/1B-3OuGTcsM/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/uoz5jvrsTMA/w-d-xo.html
2. You can set up with more forward shaft lean if you want. Hands inside left thigh would be stock. Great players have more and less its just a stock option.
You just have to then work the movements in different degrees and amounts based on where you start (thats a longer more complicated conversation)
Keep the left wrist cupped in the backswing. Start to bow the left wrist in transition in the downswing. As the downswing progresses get that Howe left wrist pointing more toward the ground. It’s a weird feeling at first and takes a lot of repetition. Greet feeling when you get it going. Ball flies strait with penetration!
Thats certainly one way Simon!
Some do that, some more flat on way back, some more flexed.
Not all, but most certainly MOVE TOWARD flexion to start down like you mentioned minus a few anomalies
Depends a bunch on grip type
Important stuff now realising how important. More practice needed. Thanks for content.
You got it, Colin!
great video! but what about the hinge of the wrists? you''re supposed to hinge up on the backswing, right?
Thanks, Michael!
Yes! You gradually hinge up all the way to the top of the swing. More details here!
th-cam.com/video/PicEGBmuktI/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the video Eric. Really helpful. I recently started working with an instructor who wants me to start bowing my wrist because I am more open at the top. Feels very weird. In your experience, your mid handicap students who adopt this get comfortable with the feel and have success?
100% yes
If face too open at top you either need to improve the wrist angles (bow lead wrist or bend back trail wrist) OR strengthen grip
Its normal that it should feel CRAZY in the beginning just to get it to chance a little.
We have a bunch of videos on these feels and drills---hopefully some of them help! Plate drill a good one to add into the tee one in glove:
th-cam.com/video/0kjdmKMNQeA/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUSRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHBsYXRl
Best golf channel on TH-cam hands down
Thank you very much for the support and kind words!
I’ve developed a weird habit of cupping my wrist in the backswing and then bowing my wrist on the downswing. Weirdly enough it has been working for me and when I try to change it, it really messes me up. This video helps me understand that there’s nothing wrong with my swing, I just need to make sure that the matchup is correct at impact.
100%....good point....nothing wrong with that....in fact many pros SLIGHTLY cupped at top of backswing then moving toward flat (flexion) in transition perfect OK
Especially if your grip is stronger then some cup OK....face will still be square enough
This is huge and something I struggle with a ton. Why do I remember teachers, maybe in the 90’s, having you raise the club head straight up from address, almost definitely cupping your wrists, and then taking it up to the top of the backswing? I think that’s how I got to this struggle but I could entirely be imagining that. Anyway, love the videos. Rarely miss one.
Thanks, Joe! Appreciate the support my friend!
Thanks Eric very helpful info. Can hardly wait to get to the range to work on this.
Our pleasure! Hope it helps!
What a great video!! Totally helped my contact yesterday! Thanks for the helpful coaching and great detailed videos.
Thanks, man! My pleasure...glad to hear that!
best explanation ever about wrist mechanism in golf swing! i'm more now conscious with my wrist during my swing but however it's pretty difficult to maintain the bow of left wrist during impact. would strength training targeted at wrist help this problem?
Perhaps....or strengthen your grip so you dont need to do it a much (meaning turn it clockwise)
th-cam.com/video/S776LyvM6Pc/w-d-xo.html
This is fantastic. Thank you for the lesson!!
Thanks Colby! Our pleasure!
Eric, Wonderful video … I’ll be working on how much lead wrist bow is required to stop slicing my driver and long metals. I especially like your advice to try using wrist bow at address and attempting to maintain it through the entire back-swing and down-swing … a great starting point. My guess is most wrist bow is required for driver, moderate wrist bow for long metals, and little / no wrist bow for mid irons and below.
Hope it helps Robert!
great lesson on bowing the wrists, ive been an outside in guy and anxious to work on this
Thanks! hope it helps!
Yikes. Been playing bad this summer. Saw this and instantly got me back on track. I was doing reverse of this.
Thanks Eric. Like your info and style.
Love to hear that---appreciate that Randy!
This is great. I notice such better ball striking when I consciously think about my wrists. The area I might have missed was the hinging aspect. Does the hinge naturally happen when you have the wrist bowed or bent?
Appreciate it!
Yeah...does it naturally happen is a tough one to answer.
When you do the bow record it....did it happen by itself without thinking hinge? Then yes. IF not you need to consciously add it.
Great video. I struggle with the opposite - I hook everything (Path 2 degrees inside to out, face closed 2 degrees). It certainly increased my distance but I end up curving too far left. I've been trying all kinds of gyrations but I think you just showed me the answer - over-bowed right wrist. Thanks !
Hey Steven!
Yeah you would have a few options here
1. Weaken Grip
2. Add a touch of extension to lead wrist
3. Less extension of trail wrist
4. Less arm rotation (supination/pronation)
5. Push handle more forward...more (passive) release, et
Another well explained video: you do a great job of explaining both the why and how in an easy to understand manner. Thank you!
Thanks, Mike! Appreciate it my friend
Hi Eric. Very clarifying thanks! Bending right wrist back and bowing left. Still struggling with chunking my longer irons. Any advice?
Hey Wim!
Hard to say 100% without seeing your swing on video but check this video out:
th-cam.com/video/CjSFKFOymQE/w-d-xo.html
Hope this one helps!
Best wrist video ever thanks Eric
Thank you, Elan! Our pleasure!
Todd! Can you start the swing by having the wrist bowed at address? That seems to me to be the only way I can set it. After years of baseball and softball this does seem to help!
Hey Tony!
Flattening/bowing your lead wrist already at setup would require your hands to be very far forward...and most times it's best to keep our setup pieces a bit more neutral to make things easier on us! Hands just inside the lead thigh at setup with a slight amount of extension/cup in the lead wrist (with a neutral to strong grip) is a great place to start.
It does make for a great impact drill though! Check out this video for that👍
th-cam.com/video/19EMUjHK08Q/w-d-xo.html
Also, here is a good one on key setup and backswing checkpoints you may enjoy!
th-cam.com/video/8TjvCHCAQ0c/w-d-xo.html
This is fantastic, game changer. Got it form pro who giving me lessons. Thanks very much
My pleasure! Glad to hear that!
What you've said makes perfect sense. I will be sure to apply these techniques on my next trip to the range. Now new subscriber!
Appreciate the support--hope it serves you well!
This is the only video you need to play solid golf.
👊👊
If only I saw this video sooner!! GOOD stuff.
:)
Fantastic lesson, thank you so much. Greetings from europe
Thank you! Our pleasure!
I started doing this naturally with my irons and wedges. It is the #1 key and I feel like its a cheat code to not hitting the ball fat when swinging in to out, it increases your radius going into the ball. Its all woks wonders in chipping presetting just a bit to have ball first contact. However this has screwed up my driver swing, what is your thoughts with the driver? I would like to see a video on the differences on bowing of the wrists w/ the driver vs irons and the different adjustments you need to make to have it work doing it w/
the driver
Thanks for the message and questions, James.
Inherently not much different.
Depends on speed.
Some differences on the TIMING of the throw (flexion toward extension with driver) can be a bit MORE and SOONEr.....especially if you have lower dynamic loft and less speed .
In terms of setup, backswing and early transition...about the same (the things you can control)
Eric "The Game Changer" Cogorno !!
:)
Great tip. I found that when I did this I hit the ball straighter but much shorter? How do you release the clubhead with a bowed left wrist?
Just have to have it release AFTER impact
th-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/hJ5scchaRPQ/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for this video. Your the only coach who has explained this thoroughly. I've been trying to train my wrist to do it but the more conscious the more mistake. Do you flex it on the take away or at the top of the swing? Thanks more power.
Thanks, Charles!
As mentioned in video you can do either....or any time in the takeaway.
I would generally prefer someone to do it from the takeaway to the top in terms of the timing. But some do it earlier and others later
th-cam.com/video/GhWNFaCqss8/w-d-xo.html
@@CogornoGolf thank you. Looking forward to watching your other videos.
Eric, your videos alone have lowered my handicap my 4 strokes. I started bowing my wrist at the top of my backswing before I start my downswing and it’s the purest my irons have ever been! .... Question, are you Boeing your wrist on the Driver as well?
Love to hear that Ryan!
With Driver?
You can. Dont have to. Some do. Some dont. Depends on grip and other factors.
Feel free to join www.cogornogolf.com so you can send me your videos and I can offer specific advice.
When I started playing again after a long layoff, I was leaving the club face open. A bowed wrist helped with that. Sure hasn't hurt Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas haven't a bowed left wrist at the top of the swing. Nice video, thanks.
Yessir! Thanks, Kyle!
super content as usual and great audio in high winds. thanks!
Appreciate it!
This was also my aha moment. It might help to feel like both wrists twist to the right as you start the downswing. That's what I feel but I appreciate it's different for everyone. It's weird but it helped me.
Love it my friend!
Eric, great stuff. Question, if you’re someone who likes to bow in the takeaway, how can you do so without getting too inside/laid off at the top causing the downswing to get steep? Less forearm rotation?
Hey Taylor!
Yes, thats exactly correct. And less shoulder rotation
EXCELLENT VIDEO ON PROPER HAND FLECTION, AND SUPINATION, AND ACTION. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HOGAN’S WAGLE THAT MIMICKED HIS SWING❓
Thanks, John! I'm OK with it if it leads to the correct movements!
Rocco... you are looking great!! thanks for the video!
Lol thanks!
Dont currently have a handicap. Probably play of 26. But shot 5 through 12 yesterday. Complete gamechanger this
Nice Jack!! Love it!
At 6:55 you were correct. They take their 8 (the pro's) and make it like our 6. e.g. they de-loft the 8 to be like a 6 at dynamic impact. Why did you say they take a 6 and make it an 8? LOL. REALLY good visuals here and excellent explanation regardless....I get what it means to deloft a club and why I pop up my irons now. Gold! Thank you Eric.
:)
Fantastic clear explanation!!!
Thank you!
Great video as always.
I get so concerned about taking the club inside when I bow the wrists.
I know without seeing my swing it’s impossible, I just feel it looks to inside , however I mostly hit it ok when I bow the wrists and take it inside.
Should I be concerned about the inside backswing?
Thanks. Do you offer video lessons
Hey Mike!
Yes-you should be concerned about going too far inside.
you can over do anything....have to use video to confirm.
Yes...video lessons on www.cogornogolf.com....check out options here

This is something I’ve been working on...discovered by accident really...I wish I’d known about the cupping 30 years ago when I started playing. The wrist flexion for me has improved my quality of strike...I always hit it straight...I guess my timing was good???
Glad to hear you are heading in right direction!
Brilliant video thank you for the great content 👍how do you find the middle ground? I had a massive slice now i have a big hook 🤦♂️
Hey Jason!
Thanks!
First you get face closed to path to hook left.
Then you get path more from inside to the right to start it right and curve left
Then you add in better body rotation/pivot and neutralize any overdone path to the right or face closed.
The question of HOW to do these things depends on WHY/HOW you got face closed in first place.
Would need to see your swing on video to say....check out www.cogornogolf.com if you dont get it sorted so you can send me your videos and I can help
Great video and explanation, I like the trail wrist feels. Question about the downswing and trail wrist, do you have to feel the trail wrist flexing at any point in the downswing, assuming if you are pivoting correctly, it would never actually get into flexion until after the ball is gone? My fear is that holding that trail wrist bent back would also create some issues if you don't counter the speed of the downswing. Thanks again!
Thats correct, Matthew.
the reality is that going from extension to flexion needs to be HAPPENING during late downswing but not FULLY HAPPEN until past impact.
thats easy to see with any slow mo face on video of any good swing you like
now you ask about FEEL and of course there will be no universal FEEL because that depends on where you are coming from
here is more on this specific topic of timing of extension to flexion

@@CogornoGolf That all makes sense, completely understanding that feels are different for everyone. You really do have a video for everything! This is beyond impressive, great work!
Can you do a video on the release? What’s happening at impact here? How important is the release? Do you hold the lead wrist bow?
Hey Kenny!
For sure...
Here is some on release to get ya started

I like this video Eric. It matches what I've been working on. Love Osprey Point golf course too. Shot my best round ever there (74)!
Thanks, Jim! Its a great spot!!
Would you recommend using lead wrist extension to help get the club working upwards in your backswing? Really struggle with shaft being below the plane and working behind my body on the backswing.
Hey Andrew!
Yeah you can do that....prob want a stronger grip pattern to make that work though.
less arm and shoulder rotation is how I would do it
th-cam.com/video/pRt-IfPIFkI/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/1B-3OuGTcsM/w-d-xo.html
Great info on a question I always had, but could never find an answer! A mighty struggle to figure out how to get more lag or shaft lean at contact. Can’t wait to get out and get to work.
Thanks Deb! Hope it helps!
Hey Eric. Great video. I just wanted to know if this change in wrist angles may merely increase my miss to the left problem. My miss is a hook or occassional block to the right. I tend to hit the balls well in warm up then the left appears during my round lol. Thanks
Could be---would need to see your swing to say for sure. Consider www.cogornogolf.com you can send in videos there
Sounds to me like you have a path too far from inside out I would check into that first
Excellent information. Thank you for the information.
Thank you Thomas!
Good stuff Eric. I've had great success with your previous video where you talked about (I think) Viktor Hovland's swing and pointing my right palm away from the ball for longer. I feel like I do it the whole time but it has helped a ton.
This channel is gold and even if the tip doesn't apply to me, I still watch because your explanations are great.
Can you do a breakdown of Gary Woodlands swing? Love the whip effect he has and would like to see your take on that move.
Thanks, Bryan! Appreciate the kind words and support!
I can....good idea, he's a cool example of exaggerating loading the shaft in transition through lots of radial deviation (hinge) of wrists.....much more than most.
Thats why he struggles with distance control with shorter clubs imo....too narrow of a low point and hard to manage dynamic loft from there.
Compared to like a Steve Stricker who has a wide low point (flat spot) and can manage the loft and distance better.
Woodland style better for speed tho.
@@CogornoGolf true with distance control. But I dont see too many others that do something like it except maybe Tony Finau. But it doesn't have the clear kind of ricochet effect of his transition. Would love your explanation though.
Book an hour call with me and we can go through it thoroughly :)
This is some great content. Can’t seem to do it but I get the concept. As hard as I try bowing my left wrist it seems without fail I just can’t seem to get the desired shaft lean at impact. Now and then I can get a bit of forward shaft lean but the club still flips about 3 to 5 inches after impact. I can feel the compression and can see the resulting beautiful ball flight I just can’t do it consistently. Golf is hard.
Thanks, Raymond....have to make sure your body is in position to be able to sustain past impact!
WOW!!! SIMPLICITY AT ITS BEST
:)
You are an amazing instructor
Thank you!!
So do I ever need to hinge my wrists up? Thanks for all you do. I have a hard time bowing my wrists unless I do it after the takeaway but before the backswing ends, but it ends up pulling the clubhead inside a fair amount.
You do some....you just want to flatten it (flexion) as you are doing it

@@CogornoGolf thank you Eric!
Great explanation, Eric!
Thanks, Nomer!
This makes so much sense! Great info, will try this soon. Thank you Eric
Thanks! Hope it helps!
Eric I like this video, I recently posted a similar topic on my channel, about wrist angles making it more simple and not using PT terms. Typically that confuses people. But how much flexion would you suggest going back?? Or should you just not think about it.? Sometimes I’d get out of sync thinking too much about what the wrist do especially on the backswing.
For me I like to think of it more on the downswing. And getting the club more into a horizontal in to out path. Your thoughts?
Hey! It VERY much depends on your grip in terms of HOW much

th-cam.com/video/lxyLhDS_UrM/w-d-xo.html
In terms of timing when measured you would see most players with neutral grip flat lead wrist by around left arm parallel in backswing. The amount of extension at setup depends on grip...obviously they need to lose that in backswing to get to flat

@@CogornoGolf thanks Eric, nice to get advise from a fellow colleague. I have a neutral grip, so a slight bowing or flexed position going back.... not a lot... I don’t wanna have a shut face, but more slightly closed may do the trick for me. Great stuff, appreciate the videos and the advise.👍👍
Is it advisable to cup the lead wrist for small chippy chips? or even slightly longer pitch shots?
Definitely an option to help the face be a bit more open so expose more bounce!
This is great advice but doesn’t touch on a third variable that many beginner’s swings, including mine when I started, suffer from which is pronation of the lead hand caused by forearm rotation; i.e., allowing the lead hand to turn palm down.
I retooled my swing with Hogan’s Five Lessons and the technique he used was to extend the front wrist in the takeaway to keep the club head outside the hands and help him bring the shaft parallel with heels at the top. Then in the down swing he would change his lead wrist from cupped to bowed and supinate the lead hand (palm upwards) and also ulnar deviate with trail hand pronating and extending in a way that freezes the movement of the hands leading to much more solid impact and better ball compression.
From a book by his practice caddy Jody Vasquez I learned that changing of the wrists with cupping in the backswing was due to mobility issues after his 1948 near fatal crash. Without the cupping of the lead wrist at the top his club was too laid off. When I tried to duplicate that wrist change technique my club shaft would wind up way past parallel because I had a normal range movement in my legs and hips.
My takeaway from that experience was to first understand the goal of where the club head, face and shaft should ideally be at each point of the swing to swing in balance and deliver the face square to target for a straight shot not at impact but at the point the compressed ball releases off the face and then find the grip and wrist action that will guide them there. Hogan’s wrist action was a his compensation to get the shaft parallel and club head in the ideal place in space to pull it back down on a well balanced path.
What a great explanation ....... Thank you !
Our pleasure!!
This is your best work !!
Appreciate it :)
Hi Eric,
Thank you for your great content, as per usual. One question. Can the wrists also rotate, in either direction, in addition to opening and closing, or hinging and unhinging?
Thanks, Ron!
For sure....
Here is more detail on all the motions of the arm/wrist
th-cam.com/video/fNry_pPPZPs/w-d-xo.html
Correct, Ron. I think Eric has simplified this movement too much. Rotation of the left forearm is what opens and closes the clubface in relation to its swingpath. The wrist joint only hinges in two planes, forearm (or whole arm) adds the most important dimension.
Thank you! I've been practicing this and once in awhile I get it somewhat right but bowing my wrist feels forced lol
Our pleasure! Hope this one helps your game!
I agree. My 69 year old body and bad right wrist makes this a challenge. Don’t get the Dustin Johnson thing where he exaggerates the bowing.
@@randyrodiek3307 yeah I have know clue how Ryam and DJ do it. The best I can do is flatten my wrist usually. Maybe my plain is off so can't do it the same way lol
Eric, I swing in to out (launch monitor) but shank the ball way more than anyone should, and shot pattern is always right with a fade, would left wrist angle improve this??
Hey John! Maybe....I cant say for sure without seeing your swing on video.
First thing I would do without seeing if I had to bet would be working this drill 20-30 reps next 90 days with object outside ball and getting he club head not working TOO FAR out past impact
th-cam.com/video/DWB0Y-mjsl8/w-d-xo.html
From there if the ball is still curving right I would first make sure grip is strong enough. If that's good then look at these wrist angles
Hi Eric,
This is very helpful. For the last couple months my only misses have been hitting it fat (I get too excited and try pounding it and increase my right hand grip pressure) or I start the ball left and it stays left, whether a light pull or a hook. Especially with long irons and hybrids.
What can I do to start the ball more right and straighten out my ball flight?
Hey Bradley!
Thank you!
I really would need to see your swing on video to offer you specific advice to start it more to the right.
There are A LOT of variables that could help but it depends on WHY you get the pulls or hooks.

This is not part of it. This IT!
The position of the wrists throughout the swing is the missing element for most golfers
Yessir
Eric I feel like the bowing of the left wrist has to come from a twisting motion on the club like a motorcycle throttle. Just bending it can cause injury. It looks the same but is quite different. I could be off base here but that is what I've noticed. Would be interested in your opinion.
Hey Darren!
Of course if you flex your wrist there would be a "twist" motion to that as well.....flexion and ulnar deviation working together creates the twist
Love this Eric! Could you explain why it's encouraged to have a strong grip (cupped lead wrist) to draw the ball when it's contradicting to what you mentioned about the wrist angles? I've always been confused about this. Thanks in advance.
Hey AJ!
All else equal the stronger grip makes the face more closed.
You can have the face still closed WITH a cupped wrist.....if the grip is strong enough.
I explain that more here:

@@CogornoGolf Thanks for the feedback Eric!
Eric.
How about the role of the forearms?
They certainly play a huge roll on clubface open/close position.
For sure!
Left arm pronation opens face
Left arm supination closes face
Right hand pronation closes face
Right hand supination opens face
Eric do you use this method with your swing?
Definitely!
