Two of my favorite instructors doing a video together about a vital fundamental that takes a lot of practice and dedication to ingrain. Golf instruction doesn't get any better than this!
This is the foundation to build your swing around and not be fooled that this happens automatically with natural forces, etc. I am committed to doing this wrist set and letting my body figure out how to work around it.

Eric - I found these videos with John Dunigan and they are gold! I follow you and John Dunigan only at this point. I followed Mike Malaska for a while and liked his advice BUT his wrist flexion mantra really set me back, especially on my left lead hand. My brain could not get there. My new swing sequence is to focus on the hand position during preshot ONLY. Getting the hand low and inside first, then rotate and lift the ARMS, not the wrists. I notice the pros do a lot of figuring their hands and path of the backswing while standing behind the ball. Then forget about it. Now over the ball switch focus to feeling the shot and where I need to be at impact. Attention needs to be at the target and beyond impact, any thought of the hands going back results in fat shots or deceleration and flipping at the ball. Now I can commit and strike that ball!! Thanks so much for your videos.

As a chronic over back-swinger, I’ve been able to finally rid myself of this disorder … with a great thought your buddy Tom Saguto shared on his channel … when you reach left arm parallel the back swing, it’s at this point that all the work for your wrist and arms is over, finished, done … from there it’s only the hips and shoulders which finish the back swing.
I’m thinking the basics of the hinge concept you guy show here - fits like a perfect puzzle piece, to prevent collapsing your elbows and going past paralleled at the top … does that make sense to you? Great video, keep’em coming!

I have been pushing or slicing a few times yesterday. I checked my set up the downswing and the backswing I couldn't find any fault. When I saw this video it hit the nail on head. In fact, it was my wrist hinge creating the problem. While watching the video I checked my wrist hinge using a chopstick I was hinging my wrist far too much and the clubface is fully open when it hits the ball. Great video thank you so much.

@@CogornoGolf I wanted to give you some feedback on this lesson. Went to play 9 yesterday and incorporated this "push/pull" feel. Some things I noticed. The first 3 holes I kept my back swing pretty slow focusing on the wrist set. Ball contact was great and felt like I could attack the ball. By the 4th hole I was so comfortable I started to get a bit quick in my back swing. What this caused was that "brooks Keopka" back swing where I was setting my wrist too early. If I break my swing into 1/3s I feel like the second 1/3d is where I need to set my wrist. I was setting in the first 1/3d. This caused bad things for me. I also noticed if I attack 6 o'clock on the ball I hit a wicked hook. If I focused hard on 7 o'clock I hit a nice baby draw. Was wondering where on the ball YOU are hitting. Also noted my yardage increased but I need to work on my long irons as everything feels different now.

  • @mrfuckyou1972
    @mrfuckyou1972 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Great lesson. I have a tendency to get open in my backswing. I like to visualize from halfway back I have a closed clubface with a quarter on the back of the iron then from there in my mind I like to throw the quarter over my shoulder. That "feel" gets me square to a little shut at the top.

I’m having a very tough time distinguishing the feel of the left and right wrists from this video combined with your right hand and wrist video.
If you were to have your left hand perpendicular to the ground. This video explains the left wrist should be moving slight down to up motion in the backswing, no left and right with the chopsticks.
Another video of your explains on the downswing the right hand and wrist. Stating you must be a player using your wrist in a left and right slapping motion than an up and down motion that would cause you to roll your wrist to catch up with the ball.. very bad I struggle with that.
How do this videos combine with one feel up and down on left wrist backswing and left and right motion on right wrist on the downswing? Much appreciated I’ve learned a ton from your videos!

Hi Eric, I love this video and John's humorous approach to teaching. But is seems John is advocating an early wrist set with the pushing down of the left hand starting the takeaway. This is in contrast to other videos (with Trevor e.g.) that stress waiting on the wrist set in order to create width. I would appreciate your two cents on this, thanks!

I got big cupping move when downswing begins. I tend to overswing. But i don't hit slices, miss is pull draw due to compensations i guess. My thoughts are, that maybe my glove hand is too active and dominates takeaway and backswing, like in this video when you guys demonstrate bad wrist movement! Would it be bad, if trail hand would do more work in the takeaway, making lead hand less active? hcp7. Nice content Eric!

I know it is not correct but cannot get over this issue. U hit a good point there. The difference between rolling and properly hinging is subtle but so important. I like using those expensive $300 training aids for drills. For the wrist set drill, can I use an expensive 3-piece ball point pen by Bic? Staples is the cheaper knock off or I could get a free chopstick at my local Chinese restaurant. I used a shoebox for swing path drills and a litter box for bunker drills. Until I had forgotten my child's LIVE school project was in the shoebox and the cat wasn't done using the litter box. I guess we can stop blaming the cat for going on the carpet. Seriously, I find the simplest items used as training aids verses the specifically designed manufactured training aids are the best. Great tip, BTW. Saves on a lot of confusion. ⛳🏌️‍♂️👍

I used to think about wrist set at the start of the swing. was really bad for me personally. I would get into trouble cocking the wrists that early. I think about a wide takeaway now and the wrist set just happens on its own. Definitely agree that rolling the forearms open is a death move... definitely don't recommend rolling those forearms/wrist angles.

There is a set of conventional wisdom around the game of golf that is just plain silly. Last spring I came out of winter having forgotten how to hit a golf ball-embarrassingly bad. A friend rescued me by sending a little instructional clip by a 15 year old girl. (At 71, I am still teachable...I am also 5'2" tall.) At the time I had regressed to struggling to break 100-even with having moved up to the red tees with my wife. Within a month I was in the mid 80s. Today I play at 80-plus or minus several...yesterday was 79-have gotten as low as 75. My wife soon kicked me back a set of tees and I now play from "white"...2 tees back from the lady's. I employ many of the principles that these standard instructional pieces declare as mandatory. My significant deviation to the "principles" is that my top hand grip, I'm a lefty, is a baseball grip-it facilitates hinging wonderfully. Otherwise, today golf is a piece of cake for me. Front arm very straight-it guides you back to the ball, back elbow tucked fairly tightly-it provides the power, stay very balanced and rotate around your spine-the arc of your swing will be determined by the natural flow created by the straight front arm and the tucked back elbow and you hit the ball out of the hinge and hang on to that hinge as long a possible-the club will release naturally.
All these "This will improve your score by 15 strokes immediately" instructional clips are okay for giving you ideas. However, this game is deeply idiosyncratic and things will go best if you figure it out for yourself. The good news for me is that I continue to improve-mostly because I have a relatively new, small set of 9 clubs...they are an inch shorter than standard and down a degree. Good luck to all of us.

One question please--when does the wrist hinge/set begin in the backswing? I realize that different players will begin the set earlier or later, but in general is it not better to initiate the backswing with the body's core (not the hands/wrists) with the club coming straight back for the first few feet and then, as the hands begin to pass the right leg, begin the wrist hinge more or less at that point. In the video it appears that you might be promoting initiation of the backswing with a wrist hinge, and, while some players seem to do this successfully (e.g., Michelle Wie), I do not think it wise because once we lose our connection with the body's core the backswing tends to lose its unified, one-piece feeling. Thanks for a clarification.

@@CogornoGolf Thanks. So if I understand correctly moving the butt end of the club out is crucial in the backswing. First of all, in the initial takeaway, the lead hand pushes to set the lead wrist (where the right pulls to lift the club up). And secondly, the palm of the trail hand pushing against the thumb of the lead hand, pushing the butt end of the clubhead out, creating width in the swing (where there is no tension in the lead arm, to maximise speed)?

I will say as it often happens in the golf-world of opposites, is that if you want to understand the feelings of left wrist not cupping but bowing, then practice hitting low draws with Rahm's super-weak left grip - it will teach you faster than anything you've ever tried - the amount of bowing required will almost hurt.

Is it fair to say the left hand shouldn't feel like it hinges (at least initially)? It was mentioned briefly in the video. I'm coming from the over hinging, cupped left hand. When I forcefully keep the left hand flat, it feel like I'm getting no power from the hinge. I look at the swing at the top and its not exactly 90. Maybe 80 degrees, I'm sure it reaches 90 degrees with the force of a full swing. The sensation is as if there's no hinging taking place.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hey! Yes if you over hinge you will likely need to FEEL like no vertical hinge and all back hinge (left wrist flexion) right wrist extension.
In a real swing yes the left wrist hinges up some (from about 140-145* at setup to 90-75* at the top
The trail wrist mainly hinges BACK (extension)
If you OVER do any move you will need to FEEL a lot less to find middle.
I did some videos on that here:

@@CogornoGolf Makes sense. I will check out those videos. It feels as if I will lose the club when keeping the left wrist flat at the top. Too much wiggle room forcing a tighter grip.
A while back ago I tried much larger grips. It limited what I thought was proper wrist hinge. I still have a large grip on an old driver. Trying it out at home and it promotes the flat left wrist. It also feels more secure.
Next time at the range I'll give it a go knowing the "no hinge on the left hinge" sensation is normal at first. IIRC last time using the large grip I tried improperly hinging the left wrist. That may be the reason why it wasn't working.
I'll watch the vids and go to the range. Let you know what happens. Thx

Alas I managed to find a golf club with a practice net free to use. It's hard to judge with no ball flight, but must say wrist don't feel overworked as usual. I'm also testing a diy jumbmax grips and it helps eliminate right wrist cupping. Only one club has it, the others are regular grips.
With that said, the regular grips have a similar story. Easier to find the slot. Less harsh on the wrist. I'm able to adopt a more neutral grip. Beforehand I tried it and I felt it limited wrist hinge. Well that was cupping, not proper wrist hinge.

Push with the bottom 3 fingers of the left hand and pull with the middle 2 fingers of the right hand during your backswing. Alot less confusing. It gives proper wrist hinge and straightens the left arm. Most of your stuff is good but sometimes get lost in all the talking. Keep up the great work.

  • @555Trout

This one had potential but missed the mark.
Yes, the heel leading toe(closed) on the backswing is critically important. Something I was instrumental in convincing you of Eric some time ago.
However, left wrist flexion/extension has nothing to do with face opening/closure. It only affects loft. This is where this lesson goes sideways.
There are two ways to affect face opening/closure.
    1. Radial and ulna rotating over each other below elbow, and
    2. The left shoulder joint rotating in arm plane.
One can see with this realization that even with the left wrist fully extended(cupped) with either or both of the radial/ulna deviation and/or shoulder rotation the face can be closed or wide open with flat left or flexed left wrist.
Equating left wrist cupping with face opening is just wrong. And it terribly misleads golfers into missing the actual things that affect face orientation.
We need motion limiters and awareness of radial/ulnar deviation and left shoulder rotation to manage face position.
Left wrist flexion/extension has nothing to with it.
Again, left wrist flexion/extension only affects loft.
I agree that players incorrectly make more wrist "hinge" by radial /ulnar deviation coupled with left wrist extension, however what opened the face was the radial /ulnar deviation, not the wrist extension.
    Redo.

Sorry that this comment isn’t specifically on this video. It is on one where you same two guys talk about left arm rotation in the downswing. You emphasize that the left arm supinates during the entire downswing. You say how pros unwind the arm twice as much as amateurs, but slower. Yet, I just got finished watching one of your videos where you tell us to do the exact opposite-namely, rotate the arm the opposite way to shallow the club and point the elbow away from the ground. These two videos, trying to explain the left arm move in the downswing, are 100% diametrically opposed in their motions. This is why I find instruction so frustrating. It would be different if instructor “A” said supinate from the top through impact, and instructor “B” said pronate the arm, but in both cases, it was the same instructor (you!). Can you try to clarify this obvious contradiction?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

When you watch back that other videos----what did I say the POINT was of doing the opposite with lead arm?
What does that do to shaft?
What issue would a player have that would need MORE of that?
The reality is the majority of this arm rotation happens just after the player starts down.
If someone is too STEEP with shaft....what would they need more of?
Its different per person because the people are coming from different places.

      Hi, Eric
Thanks for the nice reply. I would like to tell you that I purchased your Master Class for Goat Humping (LOL), and it has been very beneficial. I have been playing golf for over sixty years, have been a member of the USGTF for almost twenty years, have been a single digit handicap player since I was a kid, but have always had early extension (even before I knew that was a “thing”). Just because of esthetics, I wanted to ditch that problem. I’d tried everything I could think of-chair behind me drills, etc. I could keep my butt on the chair but my distances would be comparable to using a Camen golf ball! And my head would end up two feet closer to the target than my belt buckle. This was worse than the early extension problem! Your program (I’m just finishing the first week’s drills) has been very helpful. I’ve used the Live View Golf program (I got it at the PGA Merchandise Show two years ago-I wish it came with a manual, because I can’t do anything with it except watch myself on my iPad and record swings. I don’t know how to use the other features.) to watch my progress, and in just the first week, I’m seeing a lot of success. I can’t wait to do the next three weeks of drills. I enjoy your output on the internet, and I have to say that I have been very pleased with my association with Performance Works Golf (did I get that right? Anyway, you know what I mean.). I have a couple of your classes (Right brain vs left brain, although I haven’t gone through all of that one yet; the early extension program; and the putting video by a guy I respect a lot-Kevin Weeks. I got to know Kevin fairly well while I was teaching for Dave Pelz and we were at Cog Hill for several weeks running, four or five years in a row. I really like Kevin, and bought the program just because it was his presentation, and I got a lot of new and valuable information.)
So, anyway, thanks for getting back to me. I look forward to finishing the early extension class and getting a little more consistency out of my game.
      Art
