I must have heard this song 100 times including multiple live performances that I was lucky enough to be at and it still makes the hair stand on my neck every time. Incredible artist. Thank you Chris!
@@soundchaser2061I saw Richard Thompson in Cleveland a couple years ago at the Music Box, a very intimate setting. It could have been the best solo act I have ever seen.
GOLD , PURE GOLD ! I worked at the Collin's guitar shop in Austin TX. I always asked about artist that came thru the shop. One day I was chatting with the QC tech if he had ever heard of Chris Smithers. He said yes , one day he came in to check out the guitars. Bill Collings the owner met him and said as he played a potential guitar purchase . You any good ? Bill was always happy to hear great musicians play his guitars. Of course Chris was amazing and bought one. Look at the head stock and label in the sound hole. Collings 100% Gold. Grant ~
what have I been missing for the last 60 yrs.? Stumbled across this artist a few months back. He is only a couple of yrs. older than I am & I had never heard him before, & I LOVE my music.
Yeah, it makes you wonder what else is going on out there that you don't know about. I just discovered Sarah Jarosz last year, and she's from my backyard.
I recently picked up a ukulele years after I last played the guitar, and I've fallen in love with it. I quickly realized Chris Smither's music is perfect for the little powerhouse, so it made sense when I just read that he started out on the uke.
Funny Tom, me too - it's that last verse that gets me "You can't buy it off the shelf, you gotta grow it from the seed" and I'm a wreck! The first time I heard him live was in Inglewood, Western Australia in 2001. Before singing this song he introduced it with some background: how as a child the produce seller used to come down his street, walking in front of his pick-up truck driven by his son and loaded up on the back with all his fruit and vegetables for sale. Chris then did an impersonation of the man's street call (as well as casting aspersions on my fellow Irishmen by saying we don't know what vegetables are and think Guinness is a vegetable!) before launching into the song. I think I should upload it here on TH-cam, as it's a great addition to the song.
So excited to see Chris Smither at the Shay theater this Saturday April 7 in my neighborhood. I've listened to his CDs for hours and now get to see him in person! Love the rhythms with his feet.

Me too and I totally agree!! Go Chris!
yes i saw him perform this song also many moons ago, was so emotional.
“Fresh out!“ What a fabulous tag line!
Thanks, i always wondered what he says at the end.
Smither is absolutely the greatest living acoustic picker singer-songwriter.
Well, it's Jorma actually, but Chris is great.
Okay both of you are wrong. I’m no stranger to the oldies like Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Chris, etc.. but Ed Sheeran is a God
I only discovered him recently and some of his songs are epic!
Richard Thompson, Bruce Cockburn, Tommy Emmanuel

He's an American genius! Great songwriter, amazing guitarist, cool cat!
Whoever shot and edited this video deserves an award. Those are amazing edits for that song.

If you disliked this you are either a machine or dead inside.
This song was the first I ever heard of Chris. I can still remember how captivated I was that first time.
I adore this man. I have a working theory that he sold his soul. Something about it... so good
I think you might be right. I just texted a friend to say "How can a human make a guitar sound like the voice of God?" Your theory explains it nicely.
A great song! One of my favorites.

The consummate entertainer!
I am 67....and I just found this guy!!! Amazing. I guess we were too busy doing our lives, eh, Alan?

Seen him twice! Wow, as a fellow player, he's a God!
Chris is sublime. Discovered him in college about 45 years ago. Holds up too.
You don't understand this song until middle age. Then you REALLY understand it.
damn, ain;t that the truth. i mist have heard this song a hundred times. i never listened it until today.
A great poet as well as musician

"In the end no one will sell you what ya need.
You can't buy it off the shelf.
You got to grow it from the seed."
Brilliant
No better lyric was ever written!!
Sticks w/ me after Decades!
I was lucky enough to be on the same bill as Chris at The Blue Mountains Festival circa 2000. So was Kristina Olsen!
I heard this for the first time this morning, and I can't listen to it without crying. Thank you, Chris Smither!

This is up there as an all time favourite of mine. Brilliantly talented man with so much soul and love woven together in his lyrics and music. 👌🏻❤
