5:03 The PS3 remaster's changes don't get talked about enough. Bluepoint lessened the bloom, which makes the low-poly scenery and limited draw distance of the world more obvious.
The PS2 version is lower resolution/fps, but it still has the best aesthetics. They progressively removed the washed out/high dynamic range lighting in favor of detail but lost the iconic watercolor look. They also smoothed out Wander's animations but lost the feeling that jumping around on rocks should be a little awkward and jarring. (Death Stranding got this very right.) And what happened with Wander's face?
Super weird nitpick: I played the PS3 version, and I always loved how floppy Wander's limbs were when he ran; it showed how he's just a kid and wasn't very experienced. It looked like in the PS4 version they made him less ragdoll like?

I 100% agree. It seems to be a trend in remasters and remakes. Make it more realistic, more detailed, but less artistic? I don't get it. We want to see more of what the game has to offer, but that doesn't mean we want to lose the feeling we had before. The draw distance has been improved, but the lack of bloom effect makes the visual look simplistic. The sense of scale is better in the ps2 too somehow.
The PS4 version looks great and all, but the world feels less lonely and desolate due to the focus on realism. Everything is bright and colorful and pretty whereas the PS2 and PS3 versions went for more of a decayed, dreary, barren vibe with the art style. However, the PS3 version had problems with the FPS change affecting Wander's response to colossi shaking, resulting in so much unnecessary shaking and flailing. So I'll say the PS3 version is the definitive version in terms of visuals, but the PS4 version is the definitive version in terms of gameplay.
See, I've seen people mention that in regards to the PS3 version: that the higher framerate causes an increase in the shaking of the Colossi, but I never experienced this. I recently played through all three versions of the game to see if I could notice any significant increase in the amount of flailing, and while it did occur slightly more often in the PS3 version, it was never enough of an issue, at least no more than it is in any other version. It occurs in the others as well, and there can be scenarios where Wander is thrown around continuously, trapping the player in a loop, but I believe this is due to complex collision meshes being weird, and it crops up on occasion regardless of version. Still, while it can be momentarily annoying, I never found it to be all that prevalent or detrimental to the game.
I find it extremely detrimental in the 15th colossus. He's broken in the PS3 version. Overall the game is still very playable but the 15th colossus shakes endlessly in the PS3 version and it's near impossible to get even a small stab off on him. I dread that battle every time I play the PS3 version. The 3rd colossus's stomach is also a pretty buggy area in the PS3 version for shaking and flailing. Most of the game is still fine, but I've played every version extensively and the PS3 is where I notice the most unnecessary shaking. The PS4 version doesn't have this at all.
Actually, that's a good point. While I didn't actually have that many issues with the 15th colossus during my recent playthrough of the PS3 version, I do remember loathing it in the past for being incredibly wily. I do respect the PS4 version for fixing that, but ultimately I think, in spite of it's occasional issues, that the PS3 version is probably the closest to the definitive version.
Jake trick is too shoot his shoulder with an arrow and when he goes to grab it, gives you a slight chance to get on top of his head and stab him before he starts to flail his head.

Everything was incredible. The only thing it needed was a paint job and now we have it. It's nice to know the developers get to see their creation updated and looking just like how they much have imagined it.

The lack of bloom and the more saturated colour palette in the PS4 remake are my only real knocks against it visually compared to the originals art style. Thankfully you can in the PS4 version use one of the filters (called 'mono' if I remember right) from the photo mode during the actual game that matches closer to the original's more muted colour palette. - not something everyone might be aware of.
Great video! To be able to see the progression of a great game from past to present like this is jaw dropping, too much eye candy even back then and I played all of them! Keep up the good work.
Ps3 is the perfect one for me same artstyle but better fps and resolution honestly I feel like ever since this remake came out everybody doesn’t appreciate the original art style enough and now everyone forgot about the original and even wanders face looks better in original I don’t understand why people praise survival horrors on ps2 and say ps2 graphics are perfect for horror games but when it comes to other genres it’s different your the same people who complain about movie remakes but you worship video game remakes
Well, I definitely think it loses something in the remake. The visual fidelity is better but lack of desaturated colors and bloom makes it look a lot less unique
Butchered the artstyle of the original. I don't know what it is about it but Last Guardian truly looks like what a team ico game should look like while the SOTC remake just looks like a very generic game in comparison. It's a shame because Bluepoint is probably the best of all time at making remasters to games but their remakes so far have been extremely underwhelming. Maybe they should stick to remaking american games because they can't help but westernize the highly stylized, more imaginative Japanese titles that they get. Actually I would love to see an Uncharted 1/2/3 remake made by them.
@@benvids I highly, highly disagree. Most remakes of video game look, sound and feel amazing, and in a good remake the same atmosphere and style of the original is kept (see resident evil 1 remake, link's awakening, black mesa and the list goes on) It's not impossible to take the original SOTC and just improve on it in every possible way, in fact two generations and more than a decade later it would be hard to fuck something like that up, and to be quite frank I think bluepoint fucked up with this remake.
Bluepoint are talented when it comes to the technical side of video games. Their artistic changes always seem to leave something to be desired. That mystical, wistful feeling you get from the original artstyle is mitigated in the PS4 version.
@@deathfrombelow1193 I agree. The greatest shame is that the remake overshadows the original in popularity. The creators of the original gave the game life with its visual art. It reeks vision and creativity. The remake devs were like “let’s just add basic bitch graphical features that can run on a Nvidia gpu and sell it to the new generation”. They preserved nothing of the artistic imagery from the original. The only thing they nailed were its animations. It’s very arrogant of the devs to think that they could top a masterpiece with their little inclusions (Some devs did something similar to left 4 dead 2 recently but not near the same extent). Now, the forbidden lands look rather less hostile and unknown but more gay by adding shit like green grass (saturated color schemes) and decorative rocks. Also, I don’t think the game was “westernized” but “consumerized”. Just another sad example of modernism ruining things in media.
While I gotta admit the remake looks great, I still prefer the low rez look of the PS2 original. That grungy, bloom heavy aesthetic suits this game very well and cleaning things up takes away from that. A similar analogy would be the colorization of old films may have taken a little bit of what made the original so special.
I mostly agree with you, although I think the ps3 version is the definitive version. It keeps the spiritual and ethereal look, but makes the visuals HD.
The most definitive version would be ps2 gameplay, ps3 HD graphics, and ps4 controls. I like the ps2/ps3 version. The fur is how it's supposed to be, dirty and old. Wander feels alive and breathing when you control him. The colossus looked huge and unbeatable. I'll say that the ps4 is worth to play as well.
Absolutely astonishing seeing them side by side like this. I've played every version and loved it each time and this will still never fail to impress me.
@@ag47447 I mean, the classic will always hold a special place in my heart, but seeing the PS4 remake breathe new life into an already amazing game really struck a chord for me so I think I'd have to say the remake.
My ideal version would have the graphics of PS4 but the lighting of PS2. That exaggerated sun glare upon the alter where mono is gives a very ethereal and pure quality, like she is in the light people talk about when they have near death experience.
I like the PS3 version best, still, as it's an HD version of the original vision. Just that. And it keeps all the mood and magic, in tact. I do really like the PS4 one, but it's more just "graphically impressive". It loses a little bit of magic, with it's art design. Both worth owning though.
A spectacularly epic experience no matter the console it's played on. I hope Team ICO isn't discouraged by The Last Guardian's relative lack of love and take a stab at another game.
Something about the ps2 look. Makes it feel like a different old world. Like walls and buildings being flat stone just makes it more believable that the buildings are old everything etc. ps2 win
The PS3 version doesn't look like it changes the graphics any just takes advantage of the more powerful hardware so you have higher resolution, longer draw distance, etc. but the textures and models look unchanged from the original.
This is my all time top game no matter the platform I got this game day one or two and have loved slaying colossi ever since true masterpiece. If more games had remakes like these for ps3 and 4 I would buy more games.
Just finished playing the remake for ps4 on my ps5, jesus the game looks stunning! I wanted to know how it looked on ps2 cause people were saying the graphs on that was good as hell for the age and didn't expect to see what I saw, I still wanna know how they pulled that one out from a ps2, seriously, one of the best gaming experiences of my entire life.
I wonder why the PS4 version couldn't have some additional graphics options to make it look more like the original. It has filters but none of them give the desired affect. So many modern games give advanced graphics options. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to have the option for increased fog, more faithful lighting, and slightly de-saturated colors. GTAV let's you do similar things in the director's mode. I think the new visuals are beautiful (and prefer aspects of them) but I would have loved the option to try out things that would make it look closer to the original and it doesn't seem like something that would be that hard for the developers to implement.
THIS is how you do a graphics comparison video! Nice job, dude. Also, the PS4 version looks almost like they built it from the ground up. So crisp. PS3 version is nice and clean as well, but the PS4 one is just leagues above the previous 2.
Lindo d++. Cresci jogando shadow no ps2, zerei 17 vezes antes de completar 13 anos kkkkkkkkk
you have a big problem with typology I see. If the game has nothing changed on it except the graphics is a remaster, so if this game has no new collosus for example or added more easter egss is not a remake just because it has better graphics and audio. looks trash? so with your logic ps1 graphics are the same with a ps4 but a ps2 with ps4 is a massive difference.
the scarecrow No. This game is a remake because it was made on completely new graphics engine. Remaster means better resolution and frame rate, nothing more.
I see, I thought it had to do with gameplay differences. But still saying that remaking or remastering a game from ps1 to ps4 is somehow trash compare to a ps2 to ps4 is redicioulous, in fact to my eyes this is the only game with a graphical difference from ps2 unlike resident evil 4 for example which looks more like a money grabbing to me when you compare the difference between the original and the ps4 version.
I prefer the PS3 ver. in some aspects, one of them is that it takes the color palette from the original game and make it cleaner and better. And in the other hand PS4 has a way more focus in realism (like almost every game nowadays) and lost the style of the original game. Im not saying PS2/PS3 vers are better in terms of graphics But they still use and mantein the style thats make us say "That's Shadow of the Colossus" instead of aiming to a more realistic graphics.
I agree 100%. As impressive as the remake is on a technical level, it loses the visual style that Team ICO meticulously crafted and ultimately doesn't fully capture Ueda's artistic vision.
To be honest, I didn't mind the PS4 version's look, and I've played the PS2/PS3 version. It's hard to recreate something that came to be because of the PS2's limitations, and Bluepoint is aware of how important this game is, so I'm sure they did their best to be faithful while making it for contemporary audiences too.
the thing that gets me isnt the realistic new look it is the fact they made colossus so brightly colored instead their original murky coloring. that murky coloring made them seem more intimidating and made you think they were other worldly. which since they are the 16 parts of a demon like character composed of black ectoplasm that is what they should of went for in this remake but it just looks like that the went for graphics. although it is a very pretty game.
OMG. How beautiful it looks on the PS4. I played it on that console and it looks very beautiful everything, the atmosphere, the colossus, the music, absolutely everything is precise in this game on ps4
Jesus CHRIST, the jump from ps3 to 4 is insane. I can definetelly see now the resemblance when Team Ico had allegedly said they restarted from the ground up. I'm currently playing this on ps4, it's as if I'm playing it for the first time. Last time was about 6 years ago...
PS4 looks absolutely stunning, the only thing I didn't like is how they took some of the excessive light away from the original game (which was present in PS3), probably to give it a more realistic look, and also made Wander running animation less clumsy. I think the excess of light and the clumsiness of Wander are contained in the artistic part of the game and help to make the poetry in it (IMO the excess of light representing divine powers ruling the land and the whole dangerous "game" Wander plays with it in his journey, and his clumsiness showing that he's no prepared and trained warrior, but just a boy doing whatever he can to get the girl he loves back to life). They also could've kept Wander's original face instead of the babyface look. Apart from that, the game looks awesome as always, and even more. Now I wish I had a PS4 to play it again.
The Best way to play Shadow of the Colossus is in Ps3 is the most cheap to get the art and faces are like PS2 but improved the lighting effect and textures and the best includes a hard game to get in the actually Ico that is the sequel ;)
This isn't fair for the ps3, it tried to fix by using more shadows all obsolete visuals of the ps2, improved resolution and fps. It's a direct remake from the original source, ps4 is a complete new game made it from zero.
My eyes so wet when watch this video. The firsst game ever hook me and acompany me when i have hard time 13y ago. Bring back memory. Miss my old friend (ps2).
I kinda feel like the ps3 version is the best here j can't lie. Adore the ps4 version like jts absolutely beautiful but almost to a fault. The forbidden lands should feel barron and almost completely lifeless imo. And the ps3 version does the best service to that idea while still having a jump in fidelity on the ps2 version, just a bit crisper and easier on the eye
There's no question the PS4 remake is a technical marvel, but I can see why some people don't like it as much. In the original the desaturated landscape impressed by the overbearing sun lent the forbidden land a mystical, near other-worldly feeling. In the PS4 remake, Bluepoint kept the washed out colours. What's not shown in this video is much of the forbidden land is now a dulled, hazy yellow or chilling blue depending on where you are. Personally I think Bluepoint did a decent but not perfect job.
I am astonished that it looked as good as it did on ps2. I’m legitimately blown away! (I’ve never played the game before, but watching Jacksepticeye gush about it so much in his ps4 remake playthrough, saying that it’s his favorite game ever made, and hear him compare the new version to the old one, I just had to see for myself how it actually looked originally, and I am not disappointed whatsoever!)
The PS4 version looks a lot less bright which I really like. I did change the style BUT the atmosphere is...different, but still really particular of the game
I honestly cannot tell the difference between all three and I've been a PC hardware enthusiast for decades. What you simple-minded people tend to forget is that games with excellent gameplay out last their graphically superior brothers. When you compare the art direction, tone, atmosphere, game play, and music to remake, you don't really get anything better, you just get something that appears as more "pleasant" to your visual senses. Push comes to shove though I would just play the original, because it was already perfect aside from the framerate issues. I could think of a hundred other games more deserving of a remake or remaster than Shadow of the Colossus.
The PS4 version receives unwarranted criticism of the lighting effects. All of the detail would be lost if they kept the washed out blooming effect. The color palette is much the same, so it still conveys the same feeling as the original. People saying it's "colorful" but it's not really. It's just realistic. I think the original just used the bloom so much to cover up the fact that you can't see very far due to hardware limitations. Just like how old games used fog in the distance so you couldn't see the pop-in.
Damn... when compared to the PS2 version it loses a lot of that mystical otherworldliness the original had as far as art direction goes. The overly bright, and bloomed out art created an ephemeral and godly aura to the entire experience. Like you should NOT be there. The PS4 version sterilizes that effect.
I remember playing this game on PS2 back in the day and thinking how amazing it looked lol. We've come a long way in video game graphics. I have a soft spot for retro games though. Love the classics! By the way, did anyone else feel bad for killing the Colossus? (Colossi?) I did 😔

That game is one of the best throughout history. It's timeless. And if I should die, then I hope it will keep inspiring people for ages to come...
This game is really beautiful on big tv screen
strange to see graphics move backward so much. just goes to show you art style is everything.
i never played nothing of Teams Ico, i think is time to give a try
I'm late but you must play to The Last Guardian too
@@shydreameress264 true
@@shydreameress264 I will said the same words!!!!!
1:14 I will forever get goosebumps from this part.
Also, I really miss that bright glow that the sky gave off in the original version
Absolutely astonishing seeing them side by side like this. I've played every version and loved it each time and this will still never fail to impress me.
Which is the best version in your opinion?
@@ag47447 I mean, the classic will always hold a special place in my heart, but seeing the PS4 remake breathe new life into an already amazing game really struck a chord for me so I think I'd have to say the remake.
@@JollyRancherBoy384 absolutely true
I have the ps2 version but ps4 version still fascinates me
Just something special about the original PS2 version that the other versions can't touch.
Still have a softspot for the ps2 one. The blooming and low frames makes it almost dreamlike.
25fps lock at 480 i too miss those days
The incredible story will live on from one generation to the next
My ideal version would have the graphics of PS4 but the lighting of PS2. That exaggerated sun glare upon the alter where mono is gives a very ethereal and pure quality, like she is in the light people talk about when they have near death experience.
I like the PS3 version best, still, as it's an HD version of the original vision. Just that. And it keeps all the mood and magic, in tact. I do really like the PS4 one, but it's more just "graphically impressive". It loses a little bit of magic, with it's art design. Both worth owning though.
If any game deserves to be called a piece of art, it's this.
I think the PS2 version captures the atmosphere the best
Fantastic vid! Awesome mastercraft of editing and comparison 👍👍
Es increíble lo sorprendente que se ve PS4 aún en 2024,está consola es lo más increíble que han hecho,es legendaria está gran consola 👏👏👏👏
Still a big fan of the ps2 for lighting and fog. The original really has a better overall art style.
A spectacularly epic experience no matter the console it's played on. I hope Team ICO isn't discouraged by The Last Guardian's relative lack of love and take a stab at another game.
I loved the ps2 version but it hurt my eyes looking at it because of how bright it was
for me the brightness is the magic of this version graphics.
i can't tell the difference between 20 and 60fps and i consider that a gift
Something about the ps2 look. Makes it feel like a different old world. Like walls and buildings being flat stone just makes it more believable that the buildings are old everything etc. ps2 win
A masterpiece is timeless
It's insane to see the graphical leap between 2011 and 2018
Silent Sycho The PS3 version was a remaster not a remake so obv it looks so much better on the PS4
The PS3 version doesn't look like it changes the graphics any just takes advantage of the more powerful hardware so you have higher resolution, longer draw distance, etc. but the textures and models look unchanged from the original.
I'm having nostalgia to the earlier versions now..
This is my all time top game no matter the platform I got this game day one or two and have loved slaying colossi ever since true masterpiece. If more games had remakes like these for ps3 and 4 I would buy more games.
In another 6 years we will see this for ps5
Way to copy a comment bud
thanks a lot for the video!! idk if its the colour palet or something like that, but somehow the ps2 version has a unique atmosfere
A true masterpiece.
This was probably one of the best looking ps2 games
Just finished playing the remake for ps4 on my ps5, jesus the game looks stunning! I wanted to know how it looked on ps2 cause people were saying the graphs on that was good as hell for the age and didn't expect to see what I saw, I still wanna know how they pulled that one out from a ps2, seriously, one of the best gaming experiences of my entire life.
The only thing i don't like about the PS4 version is that wander has a baby face
Cheesy you stole that from jack
Anna banana jack?
Cheesy ah. I guess not lol. Jacksepticeye. I just watch one of his play throughs for this and he said the same thing
Anna banana that’s the fact not stealing opinion lol
Le Epic meme p
Best soundtrack ever!
David Beier try the "faded" filter.
looks amazing, but some areas look waaay to defined and realistic. It somehow misses the atmosphere of the original
They just couldn't do better in ps2 and ps3 version. I don't see your problem, details are amazing
Still my favorite game of ALL TIME! And that was since 2005! But I loved the cherry on top in 2011 and am currently loving the cherry on top of that!
THIS is how you do a graphics comparison video! Nice job, dude.
Also, the PS4 version looks almost like they built it from the ground up. So crisp.
PS3 version is nice and clean as well, but the PS4 one is just leagues above the previous 2.
Thanks a lot!
they did rebuild the ps4 version from the ground up.
Lindo d++. Cresci jogando shadow no ps2, zerei 17 vezes antes de completar 13 anos kkkkkkkkk
to me this looks like the best playstation remake after Resident Evil 1&0 :)
the scarecrow remake, not remaster
you have a big problem with typology I see.
It's not a remaster. It's a remake '-'
I prefer the PS3 ver. in some aspects, one of them is that it takes the color palette from the original game and make it cleaner and better. And in the other hand PS4 has a way more focus in realism (like almost every game nowadays) and lost the style of the original game. Im not saying PS2/PS3 vers are better in terms of graphics But they still use and mantein the style thats make us say "That's Shadow of the Colossus" instead of aiming to a more realistic graphics.
exactly
The colossi themselves were not the pieces. They were holding the pieces inside them.
If they made a remake in ps3 like they did in PS4 the game would look really good in ps3
The PS4 version looks great.
great work, comparison done on point!
Thanks!
I played it on ps2 and those frame drops and pixels and lack of view distance make it so much more special and mysterious
Ps3 version played in a good 4K tv with 5.1 speakers is the best way to play this epic game!
agree
Ico not the sequel that game was wack kid with a stick lol 😂
All versions are good, for me it is one of the best games ever❤️♥️
This isn't fair for the ps3, it tried to fix by using more shadows all obsolete visuals of the ps2, improved resolution and fps. It's a direct remake from the original source, ps4 is a complete new game made it from zero.
My eyes so wet when watch this video. The firsst game ever hook me and acompany me when i have hard time 13y ago. Bring back memory. Miss my old friend (ps2).
That is so cool i own all three of the versions and i sub to you🤘😁 keep us the great work
Thanks!
Now from PS4 to PS5... Now !. This game its a Diamond 💎.
Me encanta que la música es la misma. Era lo más perfecto del juego, y es lo mejor :3
The PS4 version looks great, but I feel it lacks some of the ethereal, forlorn atmosphere the PS2 and PS3 versions had.
Blue point turned this from a stunning game on the ps2 to a true piece of art on the ps4
The PS4 version looks a lot less bright which I really like. I did change the style BUT the atmosphere is...different, but still really particular of the game
I can’t believe I thought the remake was a remaster.
I wish they released the remaster on pc
I think the ps3 version looks the best. Ps4 would be awesome if they didn't change the textures and lighting so much.
What you described was a release not a remaster/remake
I recommend you to play this game on HDR settings. It's super delicious
Nice video! Great game too.
Thanks!
This is my favorate game!
The real question is, why was the horse so W I D E in the PS2 and PS3 version? That thing was dummy-thicc like damn.
Why does Wander have a baby face now?
2011 from the Remaster, how much of an improvement it really is
Ps2: original
Ps3: improvement
Ps4: realistic
Gran trabajo con el vídeo, felicidades
Muchas gracias!
I remember playing this game on PS2 back in the day and thinking how amazing it looked lol. We've come a long way in video game graphics. I have a soft spot for retro games though. Love the classics! By the way, did anyone else feel bad for killing the Colossus? (Colossi?) I did 😔
