I can’t believe Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge didn’t make the list. I asked the clerk, and he said it’s the game every boy wants.
I appreciate the Simpsons reference, sir 👍
I got it for Christmas once. It sucked. I only played it one time and never touched it again.
@@ajaxlewis7664 Did you select POWER DRIVE?
NFL 2K5 should have been the football entry on this list. It was the game that was so superior to its competitors that electronic arts had to buy the right to the property because they could not compete with Sega when it came to quality of game!
“Most influential” =/= “best.”
Nhl 2K5 was superior that year as well
@@madcamdisease Again, being more influential doesn’t make it better overall. And this video is ranking them by influence.
@@redjed100 that was the point I was making. It was so far superior it influenced the entire climate of NFL games. Without it EA would have never purchased the exclusive rights to the NFL and football video games as we know them would be something completely different than what we currently have.
@@modernretrorenaissance2520 That’s not the influence implied by lists like this. And fact of the matter is, with that caveat in mind and on a long-term scale, “Madden” had more influence in how football games made after it were made. This also applies to the “NFL 2K” series, as its first entry was, at least in part, made to address some of the criticisms chucked at PS1-era “Madden.”
Madden is definitely more important, but NFL 2K is probably the best NFL game ever made.
NFL Blitz is up there too. Very similar to NBA Jam, it’s a sports game for non-sports fans.
2K4 and 2K5 honestly saved the series, even though it was more system-intensive than 2K3. Not saying the series was bad, it's just that 2K3 was underwhelming compared to 2K4 and 2K5.
Not only is it the "first version" of NBA Jam, but Arch Rivals literally invented rubber banding in video games, just in case all of those cart racers are looking for some one to thank. Few games in history have that kind of legacy.
Arch rivals is the one with the punch button, isn't it?
@@juicepouch1 Yup
It’s too bad the original console ports of Arch Rivals were so buggy, it might be more fondly remembered today. Granted most of the glitches actually made the game easier (especially in the Genesis version), but they also made it a lot less fun.
Earl Weaver Basketball?! D'oh, Mr Potter...
I'm sorry but sensible world of soccer introduced managerial mechanics (buying/selling players) etc to not just football games that you could actually play (not like the football manager games that were database simulators), but was copied by other sports games too. It was many years ahead of its time.
I never thought that I worked on would ever show up on one of your lists (especially not a "good games" list). Earl Weaver Baseball was one of my favorite games that I had the privilege of working on during my many years at EA.
I would argue Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix from 1991 was far more influential than Papyrus' Indianapolis 500 from 1989. Indy 500 was the first 3D Polygon-based racing game, but Grand Prix was more ambitious, way more successful (especially in Europe) and made much more of a lasting impact on the racing game simulation genre. Indy 500 offered just one track (The titular Indianapolis Motor Speedway) whereas Grand Prix offered the entire Formula 1 calendar: 16 unique circuits. Grand Prix also pioneered all the driving aids that we take for granted in modern racing games: brake, throttle and steering assistance, ideal racing lines that pop up on the circuit, and suggested gears for each corner; all this at a time when you couldn't really get analogue racing wheels like you can today; the aids had to smoothen out digital inputs, and the result was a game much more accessible than Indy 500 IMHO.
What's more, Geoff Crammond had arguably got the ball rolling earlier than Papyrus, releasing Revs for the BBC Micro in 1984, which was an F3 game and the spiritual predecessor to Grand Prix, (Featuring fictional drivers like Johnny Turbo, Max Throttle, Gloria Slap and perennial backmarker Miles Behind) and even the realistic driving physics engine was something Crammond had pioneered in Stunt Car Racer in 1986, (Think Trackmania but made in the 80's) 3 years before Indy 500. I think it's Geoff Crammond that the likes of Forza, Gran Turismo and the Codemasters/EA F1 series owe a huge debt to.
Nr2003 beats them both
@@dennisbowen452 explain
@@dennisbowen452 NR 2003 was also developed by Papyrus, and was one of their last games before shutting down. The base code from NR 2003 was re-used as the basis for iRacing, which is an absolutely huge sim-title for professional racing drivers and sim-racers alike; for a lot of pro-simracing your options are either iRacing or RFactor 2. NR 2003 definitely has a dedicated following not unlike the Geoff Crammond Grand Prix games where people are still making mods for it today. So definitely a huge legacy but I would argue not quite as influential or groundbreaking; still very good though.
OH YEAH, HERE WE GO, SPORTS TIME!!!!!
I wasn't good at racing in Indy 500, but I was really good at driving backwards around the track and causing incredible crashes that had the races called off.
Same 😅
i did the same with Nascar games
If you didn't do that in real life based racing games, did you really play them?
As a Canadian, I would be remiss if I did not suggest that NHL '94 could have gotten an honourable mention. I mean, I understand because: 1) Hockey isn't as extensive or as influential in the gaming sphere outside of Canada as most of these entries. 2) Hockey isn't really much of a thing on the British Isles.
Nonetheless, a great video!
Although they did give a spot to a game about American Rounders, a 'sport' so up its own backside it calls its finals the World Series.
@@Leaddevo The term "Rounders" still throws me off when I hear it. But the sport of baseball is popular in more places, specifically in East Asia, North and South America. the "World Series" thing is just USA being USA
94, or as I call it, 93 Jr. due to Bettman forcing EA to dump fighting from the game.
1) Not including NHL '94 (or ANY hockey game!) in a sports All Time Best list is sacrilege.
2) Either RBI Baseball or TecmoBowl (NES) would have been a better choice for baseball/football
agreed on all points
Someone doesn't understand what the word influential means. It doesn't mean best. You should have worked that out with there being a Madden & Fifa game in the list.
There have been some great hockey games, but I wouldn’t call any of them “influential” because none have had a real impact on gaming mostly due to hockey being a fairly niche sport. Even in the US it’s the fifth, sometimes sixth most popular spectator sport because it’s barely played outside of the northeast and midwest.
Yep, EA signing an exclusivity deal was incredibly influential but Madden '06 was influenced by that deal, not the thing doing the influencing. TecmoBowl was significantly more influential
OH YEAH, SPORTS TIME.
LET'S DO A SPORTS!!!
I know you guys don't like sports but I appreciate these type of videos on my favorite type of games!
The closest things to sports games I’ve ever played were Simpsons Wrestling and the Tony Hawks games
Tony hawk isn't just a sports game.... its an XTREME sports game!
Cool radical bird man
TEAM TRIPLE JUMP, love the content, can you guys stock more merch soon?
None of the races in Indianapolis 500: The Simulation last 500 Laps because the 500 is referring to the race distance in miles. Since the Track is 2.5 miles long, the number of laps is 200 for the Indianapolis 500.
Triple Jump really needs an equivalent to Mike Channel of Outside Xbox; you can tell nobody at Triple Jump really likes or cares about sim-racing which is why the Indianapolis 500 entry felt so token and lacklustre here. It makes me wonder why they've done a list of influential sports games if they know nothing about the sports they feature (And aren't willing to do the basic research needed to at least talk about them) and know even less about why the games are influential in the first place. Motorsport seems to be the one thing Ben cares about even less than Bionicle, and that's saying something...
I have a feeling no one at TripleJump have any knowledge about Motorsport
@@GeriatricFan1963 The funny thing to me is that probably nobody would have complained if the list didn´t feature any Motorsport related games to begin with since many people don´t group Motorsports together with other Sports.
OH! I had that Indy 500 game as a kid, it was one of my first PC games. It was this, Carmen San Diego and Lemmings.
Also, Punch-Out is a very important game to me! Not only did I play a ton of it as a kid, it was also the game I was playing in the waiting room at the hospital the day my Nephew was born.
Sensible World of Soccer is THEE greatest and most influencial football game of all time and it's an absolute sin that it's not on this list. Can't believe you went with FIFA 16.
This one was a rare miss for me, a bunch I didn't agree with, but on to the next one!
Earl Weaver basketball would be an interesting game ( nice slip there at 5:40 Ben)
Another sports video of Ben playing every other kind of sport in a game that he hasn't played before
Who doesn't consider sports sims proper games?
Seeing indy 500 on the list was a shocker but pleasant. It was the game that started papyrus which made nascar racing 2003 season, the doom of sim racing where after 20 years still sees new mods for the game replicating modern nascar and even some mods that showcases older cars from different eras of racing.
I would have thought some of the following would be there.
Multi Event / Athletics - Track and Field or Summer Games
Racing - Monaco GP
Football - Sensible Soccer or Championship Manager or Football Manager (Original)
Whilst some of these games were not the best (e.g. Outrun better than Monaco but Outrun wasn't really sport), they were copied to a degree / improved upon for years after.
The entry that u missed may have been session skateboarding or skater xl they have redefined the genre because of their 2 stick inputs in that the left stick controls your left foot and the right controls your right foot as opposed to buttons in tony hawk franchise and one stick in the skate franchise
Tecmo bowl should be on here
No NHL '94!? That game actually made hockey relevant for a little while. That's why EA still has "NHL '94 controls" as an option to date
FIFA 16? I was already lighting a torch, but you said good reason and a very good reason it was...
A good reason? Why because they introduced women in it? Something no one ever buys FIFA for 😆 😅 😂 🤣
FIFA 16 sucked if I remember correctly. It should have been FIFA International Soccer.
@@Marc_Araujo 84% on metacfitic. You're misremembering
@@poco_a_poco_music It was shit as far as I'm concerned. Up until that point the best one was FIFA 14 and it didn't get decent again until FIFA 17. FIFA 18 again wasn't all that good and FIFA 19 came out and was a beauty. FIFA 20 was absolutely pants and then FIFA 21 was alright not the best I've played then 22 comes along and like 19 a lot of people say it's one of the worst butnI actually think it's up there with some of the best. I feel like most people shit on said FIFA because they can't play the game properly.
If NHL 94 isn't on here this list is a joke.
I do feel that Track and Field and NHL 94 should have a place in a list likt this.
I happened to find a copy FIFA 16 at my local EB Games recently. It only cost 50 cents AU, given the game was already $1AU, and they were having a big sale that day. But still, given its importance in this list, I'm glad I got it then and there!
Championship Manager?? or Football Manager have to be on the list
Earl Weaver Basketball at 5:40?
I’d throw in Blades of Steel as either #11 or as an Honorable Mention.
Where is Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES!!??
I would put NBA 2k11; that game set 2k officially as the only basketball game for a couple of years. Even though I'm not a massive fan of the game for the last couple of years, I have played at least a thousand games every year besides this year.
Thank you! I’m glad someone said it 2K11 really helped set up the last 12 years of basketball games EA couldn’t even try to compete
@@Delaretro_ That is right; if they’re going to put madden 06 on here, they should put this 2k. Nba live hasn't been relevant since 2010.
Now WHERE is Backyard Baseball '05, 'cause all the real ones know that that was the best baseball game of all time
Shock absorbers are the part of the car that absorb shocks.
I was today years old when I found out u guys were "related" to cultaholic
Called it with Wii Sports at #1
I love WWF SmackDown and WWF SmackDown 2!: Know Your Role
If this list would have been presented by anyone but Ben there would have been a mass exodus of subscribers. 🤣
NHL 94 snubbed
Sensible soccer was fun though
Punch out is a wonderful classic
RIP FIFA...also, we here in the States feel the exact same way about cricket.
Don't get me wrong, FIFA16 including teams of female players is a good thing, but I don't think you really demonstrated how it was "influential". In what respect did this change to the series influence other games? There might be some ways in which it did, but you didn't really tell us.
Haha exactly, they said "notable" which is entirely different to the actual purpose of the list "influential"
To say there was no purpose in them including it, would be fair and factual"..
Which then makes one wonder exactly why they did include it and what could their "purpose" actually be..
Anyway thank you for pointing this out and i encourage others to do so, hidden agendas are rarely for the benefit of the common man!
Blitz deserves a spot here
Since Madden 06 is up there, being influencially negative counts, right? I'd throw up...I think it was something like UEFA 2012 or something. The game that introduced loot boxes that now plagues so many games, sports and non alike.
I'd pick FIFA 98 over 16, because of how important it was for the PS1, and how it introduced a lot of us to Song 2. FIFA International Soccer and FIFA 97 were important in their own right, but I think that FIFA 98 turned this into the massive behemoth of a series and the only soccer game in town until Pro Evo in the next generation (Unless you had an N64, in which case you can argue for ISS64 for a while). 98 was probably the most important Pre-Ultimate Team FIFA in the series. Also have to give a honorable mention to stick wiggle classics: Activision's Decathlon on the Atari 2600, and Epyx Summer Games on the C64 (and other 8-Bits).
when you look at the current state of sports video games it’s been a copy and paste roster update every year since 2017
Tecmo Bowl baby
Tecmo bowl and 90’s madden were more influential. Also the first fifa game with loot boxes was more influential. Pack$
I would have gone with Madden 99. It was the first to do franchise/dynasty mode
I wasn't paying close attention. Did I miss the part about NHL '94?
What's Baseball?!
I don't know, What's Cricket?
Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world. Stop being triggered.
@@fandangobrandango7864 Sorry, I'm was joking, not triggered in any kind
i dont know what is cricket
The name of that game is Madden NFL 06.
Sports time!
Digitally athletic. Same here.
NFL 2K5 was by far the most influential NFL game!
He's on fire 🔥
Earl Weaver Basket ball? (NBA jam section?)
Indy 500 actually last 200 laps ,it doesnt run 500 laps
Sports, amirite?
No Aussie Rules Football 2011? jeeeeeeeeeeeeez
Simon give this an up
Now it makes sense why EA sports games such so much this past decade. If they're the only ones with the licensing rights and there is no competition, why bother making it good
No NBA Streets Vol 2???
Is baseball a thing in the UK?
"...Influential sports video games," that didnt influence anyone to do sports*.
Nintendo GameCube WWE games are also way better than WWF No Mercy
There are way better American football games you could have picked. TecmoBowl is way more influential.
Not No Mercy Again, WWF SmackDown 2 and WWE SmackDown: Here Comes The Pain PS2 are so much better
No they're not. Any wrestling game where you can punch someone that's jumping at you from the top rope out of the air is just shit in my opinion...I am partial to WCW vs. the World though.
@@Marc_Araujo I'm a longtime PlayStation fan and the WWF/E games on PSX are so much better and PlayStation 2 lasted 13 years 2000-2013, where's N64 in all this time ?and PSX killed the N64 . PS2 outsold every console by selling over 154,000,000 units in becoming the highest selling console EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@Marc_Araujo WWF Royal Rumble on SNES is also so much better than shitty No Mercy
@@britneyspearsvillarosa Those comparisons are silly. What do the consoles themselves have to do with the games? What does the PS2 have to do with anything?
@@britneyspearsvillarosa You just eliminated any credability you could have with this stupid-ass statement. At least say Raw instead of Royal Rumble.
I'd argue that Wii Sports while massively successful hasn't actually influenced anything but a few Wii copycat games.
And Fifa 16 was influenced by changes in society, it hasn't influenced anything (but getting governments to look at legislating against loot boxes)
Agreed. The modern football game owes a debt to the original Pro Evo on PS1. No Mercy is also the wrong pick as the WCW games on N64 had already laid the blueprint. Not sure how many of the team were even born when that came out.
Agreed on both counts. FIFA 16 wouldn't be anywhere near the list for me. The most influential football game should be Sensible Soccer (for obvious reasons), FIFA International Soccer (the first of the series and by far the best football game ever at the time), ISS Pro (the blueprint that all future football games followed, FIFA 08 (the basis for how it is now, the year it came good and overtook PES for gameplay) or FIFA 09 (the first one with Ultimate Team, which for better and mostly worse has had a huge influence on modern gaming)
UEFA Dream Soccer had female players in....2000
xD
But that’s a different series.
The word “soccer” was invented by the English. Look it up.
NHL 94
Ice Hockey
Base Wars
Mutant League Hockey
Mutant League Football
NFL Blitz
Tecmo Bowl
Not the best list by Triple Jump, No NHL 93 representation, Earl Weaver Baseball?,No Tecmo Bowl and I would argue Championship Manager made a entire genre of sports games. I get it that they try to cover sports but it's more like your friends that say they are into gaming then you ask them what they play and they respond by saying COD. You ask anything else and they reply nope.
Is Pro Wrestling really a sport though?
Nope. Wrong. Incorrect.
RBI Baseball
Tecmo Bowl
Pong
are the correct answers.
Shouldn't Madden 08 be on this list
The fact that 'Ricky Ponting Cricket 2005' isn't here just feels wrong. Best cricket game of all time, and definitely up there as the greatest sports game.
Fifa 12/13 was more influential than Fifa 16.These were the games which launched the careers of a lot of Fifa Content Creators.
NBA 2K11 deserves to be on this list. It is widely regarded as the best basketball game of all time. It raised the bar for what a basketball game is at that time and it was the nail in the coffin for EA's NBA Live series.
wasn't shouting about sensi, was shouting "what about kick off" made in 1989 and my preference of the 2 (yeah I said it) but the point about including female players is very well made boys (and girls)
👽
Don't call it Soccer.
And: WWE Smackdown FTW.
Madden 06 on PS2 and Xbox was great - 360 and PS3, pure garbage.
Jesus loves you
11:20 I cannot get behind that baseball hit distances being in meters. They belong in feet and that's it. It's our sport, we decide how it's measured!!
well no, The earliest known reference to baseball is in 1744 in Britain. And the first recorded game of "Bass-Ball" took place in 1749 in Surrey, and featured the Prince of Wales as a player. William Bray, an English lawyer, recorded a game of baseball on Easter Monday 1755 in Guildford, Surrey.
The first known American reference to baseball appears in a 1791 Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Nope, it ain't your sport. We gave it to you because it's shit
I dont get putting in nba jam over the first story mode 2k game, and then putting madden over blitz.
Because Blitz was nowhere near as influential as Madden? And NBA2k's stories aren't that great.
NBA jam had people who didn't care about basketball playing.
Blitz did not have people playing American football
At the most, FIFA 16 should've been put in as a wildcard entry or something. Nothing influential about it, just including women doesn't really make it qualify for this list. And as some others have said, have been other games where women have been in much earlier than this. So, it is just a generic FIFA game you'd find in the discount bin, amongst all the others. Totally unremarkable. A decent video, but there are other sports games that would've been better suited to be on here. But that FIFA game, the least suited to be on here for sure.
Pro Evolution Soccer in the PS1-PS2 era was way ahead of it's time, way better than FIFA in terms of gameplay. I don't know why it isn't there.
wow, u passed over a hundred better soccer games because some chick's were in it...totally...barf
Whilst I *very* much respect & appreciate the inclusion of female players the title of the vid is "most influential..." ... *SO* , clearly & rationally, sensible soccer totes takes the plum
Does it? How many big selling Sensi clones are there? International Soccer on C64, Matchday on speccy or Pro Evo on PS1 have all had a greater influence.
@@Leaddevo It's like saying what was more influential, the wheel or a model T Ford
no kick off then no sensi
Yes, I although a big step forward for womens football, FIFA 16 was not a big step forward for video game football, so a silly entry, should have been FIFA 98 or SS
Welp, good bye triple jump. It's been a ride but it is very apparent your writers shouldn't be writing, definitely not on anything sports related. This channel has been slipping ever since lockdown got over.
Okay im sorry but skateboarding is not a sport. Its an artform. Any skater will tell you that. Including this fella. Been skating for 13 years.
It's absolutely a sport
@@poco_a_poco_music I am so sorry you think so
Fifa 17? Couldn't just keep it to gaming could you!? Unsub.
It was 16 though.
You know these woke freaks have to push their political nonsense. I’m shocked they didn’t whine bout the alphabet people.
Very random list, I dont like it, but your silly commentary at least make it worth
