Did you notice that throughout chapter one prior to the class trial we as the player progressively get less introspection (aka the blue text) from kaede
I think it starts when she first finds the shot put balls. Cuz I think she secretly put them in her bag without us knowing

@heyitzsamurai It also explains the weird behaviors Kaede engages in all leading up to the trial. Why she keeps saying "catch the mastermind" and not the murderer. Why she "knows" for a fact Shuichi didn't do it. Why she has what feels like a goodbye speech in the elevator.
It's confusing the first playthrough, but it's absolutely written in a way that both obfuscates it to the player and also tells you exactly what's happening.
Has anyone in these comments ever heard of an unreliable narrator? I honestly thought it was a pretty basic concept to understand, but so many people are like "This no make sense! Writing bad!"
If Arin ends up voicing Shuichi I feel like he will regret given how many future conversations will just be entirely Arin characters talking to Shuichi.

Okay so when I first saw the scene of Rantaro's death, I gathered that the ball probably hit his head from above based on the angle of the blood splatter and the blood on the camera. I was thinking that someone had to have dropped it from the vent but I wasn't sure on who, it does make sense if it was Kaede though, as she could have set a trap or crawled into the vent. I have never played this game or seen anyone else play this game though, so this is just conjecture.

I feel like he’s going to at some point. When voicing the protagonist, it’s harder to crack jokes at the same time while the other person just following along has no issue. I can’t imagine Arin who doesn’t enjoy these games critically commenting on dialogue or making sharp remarks on the spot if he’s not that enthusiastic as Dan.

I hate the first trial so much. It only goes like this because the game lies to you when the killing happens and then re-tells the moment completely different after the reveal
I REALLY want to experience this game the first time through with Dan & Arin, but being continuously left on cliffhangers and having to wait an entire week just to have the same thing happen again is so…torturous. I love GG, I really do, but I miss when long playthroughs weren’t just on the weekends. It really disconnects me from experiencing the story with them. I’m probably gonna have to watch someone else play it all the way through so I don’t get so frustrated every weekend waiting for more 😞 (just my opinion, please don’t get mad at me, I love GG and I know they have to adapt for the algorithm)
Reaching this made all the hours of school stuff worth it. The real Danganronpa V3 quite literally starts here.

ironically, if someone just bluntly attacked someone in the night and then dropped the weapon and ran, there would be incredibly little to go off of.
@voided_sun the issue would be getting someone out in the first place and alone. Its too much of a gamble to just yolo a murder, if you dont plan the circumstances theirs a ton of ways to get caught accidentally.

Sure, I can think of things to go wrong when you "yolo it". But these things could also happen in a convoluted murder plan. Especially if you have to spend time framing people, moving things around and covering things up.
I would say that none of the trials in the first game are really all that complicated? Some of them seem way more complex than they are because of diversions by the culprit, or interference by dumb 3rd parties, or because they drag on about certain details to pad time, but in general they're pretty straight forward. DR2 tho - that's where the series really earned it's reputation for complicated murders. and admittedly, I prefer them that way - it makes them more interesting, and it's fun trying to solve it before the characters do.
Knowing that this is likely the part where everything goes down and Dan drops his jaw on the floor, I harnessed my power to become the Ultimate Web Page Refresher. Truly the greatest talent.
I genuinely forgot that this was the part where everything went down.. I swear I remember the first trial being longer than this 😭 like wdym this was 2/3 episodes?!?

The visual/HUD transition of characters changing I think is very underrated. Its just so well done and such a small touch that really helps hammer home the point of what is happening.

It’s pretty dumb. Heavy rain had a very similar plot point with one of its pov protagonists having important scenes that make clear they’re the culprit missing until the end, and it was rightly criticized heavily for it as well. It’s just lame and a bit lazy to hide details like that when you’re playing from a characters pov.
It’s one thing if the reason is amnesia or their brain is scrambled in some kinda way, but that’s not the case here. POVs that you follow throughout a story should be accurate perspectives and never lie without a really extreme reason like the two I gave above. I don’t completely hate the idea of an unreliable narrator but the way they do it here just sucks.
A good unreliable narrator doesn’t mention certain things or paint a completely accurate picture of their past (sometimes hinting they’re lying to themselves). However imo they don’t cut out entire scenes that show important events, such as a murder… in the middle of a story. Maybe some mystery novels do that but I’ve never liked those kinda books much. That is my opinion, it doesn’t make it right or wrong that’s just how I feel based on those points, and even if I think it’s dumb I can understand why some would find it cool and interesting.
Also regardless of that opinion, the sheer fact of going back to the same kinda mostly bland male protagonist we had in the first two main games after just the first trial is disappointing. Shuichi especially reminds me of Makoto. Should have reversed the culprit, and started as shuichi instead of kaede.

I really hope Dan continues to play shuichi the whole game I think it’s nice to finally have him voice a protagonist plus shuichi as a character is much more of a coming of age into confidence protagonist than the others who immediately took charge so if Arin gave his signature protagonist voice to him it wouldn’t feel right
although I understand arin’s confusion regarding the culprit of this case considering it was the person you play as throughout the whole chapter, I do think it adds an extra layer of anxiety and distrust to the game, because now nothing’s off the table. even the character you’re playing as can be guilty.
Its funny you can hear the shock in both of their voices at 44:41 when Arin is clearly looking at his spoiler free walkthrough that says something along the lines of "Pick Student 11"
Btw fun fact chapter 1 was the hardest chapter to write for Kodaka
And it’s still disappointing. 😢 literally the only DR chapter I hate. Well other than that one episode of DR3 where 👾gets brutally murdered for shock value.

with this reveal (to me at least) it's less about "OBVIOUSLY you should have figured it out ahead of time" and more having it explained and looking back at stuff in retrospect. Because they definitely plant some stuff that you wouldn't notice the first time through

As you may or may not have guessed from the Lie mechanic, this game's theme is Truth and Lies. Every Danganronpa game has a theme: Danganronpa 1's theme was Hope and Despair; Danganronpa 2's theme was Past and Future; and Danganronpa V3's theme is Truth and Lies.

The anime for DR did really well iirc Kodaka didn't want an adaptation of the other games cuz he felt the anime left a lot out that's why he finished the anime with new story.
Honestly this may be one of the best class trials of Danganronpa, so glad they didn’t get spoiled.

In the Classroom before Kaede and Shuichi ran to the Library, Kaede used the very specific wording of
"I dropped everything I was holding"
Kaede was previously holding a broom so the player wouldn't find it strange to say she dropped what she was holding, but it's the fact it was worded "Everything I was holding" makes all the difference.
And of course, in the warehouse, right after she was contemplating the shot put ball: “I shoved the things I was holding into my bag…”

Unreliable narrators are the most fun when they don't directly lie to the player, they just obscure the truth the vagueness.
I'd very much like Dan to be the main character voice, we already have two DGRP playthrough with Arin's protagonist voice and my mental health won't survive an even longer one.
