In this video, I start the process of swapping a VW TDI engine into the Samurai. Engine is removed... everything is cleaned up, prepped, and painted.

I plopped an AHU into my ‘86 Toyota and can agree it’s a good reliable setup. One HUGE lesson learned for me is right now while we’re talking about it, go take the bolt out that holds the vacuum pump down, clean it, and put red Loctite on it. I had that bolt back out on me twice. The kicker is, the vacuum pump shaft also drives the oil pump. The second time it happened it ate the turbo so… glue that baby in.
Thanks for the info! I'll definitely check that out.
This is Suzuki Samurai of America approved!!!!
More on it coming soon! Check out the rest of the build... It's been a fun project up til now.
@@NotSoGrandGarage currently watching a lot of your videos, very impressed with your channel! You got a sub from me buddy. Sent you an email through your website as well.
@@SuzukiSamuraiofAmerica appreciate it!
Hey buddy how are ya? Looks like you are having so much fun!! This is gonna be a cool lil rig! The vw tdi engines are so fantastic!! It’s funny my deuce and a half had a ldt-465 7.8 l turbo diesel engine, it had 134 hp and 330 ft-lbs from the factory. A vw BHW engine with a stage 2 tune has more hp and torque, and only 2L. Granted the ldt-465 could take a hell of lot of abuse but was a slug!!!
Diesel in Kaliforniastan just hit 6.19 a gallon, totally insane!! This winter I’m gonna get my system back up and running, do a dual tank set up on my p pump truck. California politicians are commies!!!!
It's gonna get stupid everywhere... but then next year... election year... it'll come back down. They pump it up.. so they can claim they brought it down and saved us all so much money. Lol. I do say that I wish we (as a country) would have gotten on the small diesel bandwagon a long time ago... but now with emissions regulations in place.. it's kinda late for it.
@@NotSoGrandGarage ya I wish we could of gotten Toyota trucks with diesels. I go the Philippines yearly to see the Inlaw family. They have Toyotas,Fords,Isuzu,Mitsubishis, all sorts of neat stuff, but can’t bring them over. My daughter Inlaw has a 2017 Toyota innova mini van d4d engine 5 speed and straight rear axel. The thing gets 40 mpg almost no smog crap on it. It’s an amazing van!! Oh well I’ll be happy with my cj5 tdi heheheh when it’s done!
@@heyyoubuddy6749 yup.. sucks we can't get that stuff here
That price per gallon is still a dream.
Here in Germany it peaked at 7.95$ / Galon regular diesel
Greetings, I would like your advice on TDI engines, which one do you recommend? Jetta 2003 engine 1.9l Alh, Jetta 2006 engine 1.9l BRM or Jetta 2006 1.9l Bew, which is better? Thank you, greetings from Puerto Rico?
The older... the better in my opinion. The newer they are, the more complex the systems are and the wiring required.
Thinking of swapping 2004 1.9tdi in my samurai and was wondering what motor to tranny adapter kit did you use or would recommend?
Acme Adapters is the kit being used on this build. Give them a call and they should be able to tell you what you need.
hello, what engine was stock ? stock transmission is ok for the new engine ? thank you
Stock was a 1.3 gasser and a 5 speed. The transmission will be okay at stock power levels from the tdi
@@NotSoGrandGarage thank you for reply, i`m looking for a samurai lwb for weeks but i still don`t know what to chose, diesel one or petrol, i`m very limited by engine swap laws...still are few loopholes. I`m looking for a decent power to spin 32-33 wheels, to be a reliable engine and low consumption 😆 for petrol maybe 1.6 16v Vitara almost enough power (if i do turbo upgrade probably will be big fuel consumption) or if i chose diesel maybe 1.9 tdi from VW or 1.9tdi (renault engine) from Volvo V40
@Daniel-iu7ob diesel will definitely get better mileage and power... but its not a cheap endeavor to swap one.
Be careful with TDIs and black diesel.
If its to much black diesel in the mixture or you cold start the engine on black diesel it ends up in the engine oil
It's a customer's ride. I doubt it'll see any home brew. Thanks though and thanks for watching
Hi,i blew up my engine on a samurai,is it a good option to swap a 1.9,what things do i need to change to swap it.i dont want to spend a lot of money doing it.which year engine should i go with so that there is the least amount of wiring involved
I'll say this up front... its not a cheap endeavor. The adapter kit isn't cheap. You'll be 2-4k in it depending on how creative you can be with fabricating you're own parts. With that said, the simplest engines are the mechanical engines... 1.6 and 1.9 mechanical engines... turbo or nonturbo.
decided MTDI or ETDI?
A buddy of mine pretty well donated a roller that has the harness, ecu, and e pump... so e pump it is
sorry, commented before i finished the video.....
@@audiosfl no worries. Lol
Do you know if the owner wants to sale the computer of the samurai? I’m interested
I can ask him. I'd say he'll probably want it to go with the engine and harness though.
