Imagine being so petty that you change your magazine's testing procedures and deliberately and permanently screw up the reputation of an entire company just because you got into an accident and got lightly injured.

David Lindsey same feeling! A story like this should have destroyed them. Suzuki should have gone forward with the lawsuit to teach these third party companies a lesson on fair reviews. I believe in these cases, company reps must be present during testing.

They also had just purchased a new building and were on the verge of bankruptcy. They were looking for an issue that would prove that Consumer Reports was necessary and up their magazine sales.
For years they fought in court stating that they were performing a public service, therefor Suzuki should not be able to sue them. Isuzu also sued for the Trooper II and won.

In the raw footage there's the voice of a Consumers Union VP demanding "You tip that car or I'll find someone who will!". Even the driver logs from their most seasoned driver said, "The Suzuki Samurai poses no significant safety risk and outperforms all vehicles tested today."

I don't know of any other scandals that they were found to have taken part in, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. However, overall they are the exact opposite of shady. The idea of making a whole magazine based upon holding companies accountable for their products and claims by paying verified customers to submit feedback on products after a certain length of ownership is an _excellent_ idea that benefits everyone in our society. They gather and compile LOTS of feedback data from customers and sell "packages" of this data to the companies involved for them to use as a guide for how to improve the next iteration of their product(s).
(I just realized I am actually thinking of the J.D. Power Survey, which is for vehicles specifically, but Consumer Reports operates under the same philosophy and goal of simply informing consumers and holding companies accountable to encourage meaningful improvements, so I still think that they should be seen as a force for good that simply might have had some bad apples, or temporary lapses of judgement due to external pressures of the time)

In the previous gen Jimny you can easily swap the engine for a larger Suzuki Swift engine - it's the same family of engines (M13 and M16) and bolts on the original transmission, so it's easy-peasy - and you get 136hp for cheap in this bad boy, which is more than enough in such a small 4x4! I had a 2000 Suzuki Vitara 2.1L 4x4 manual transmission and I was amazed at it's ability to go through pretty much anything (mud/snow). I never ever got it stuck and it went through some hairy stuff. It was my daily driver so I didn't try to bury it in a mud hole. Im going to miss getting out during big snow storms and cruising through the country having a blast damn I wish I didn't have to get rid of it lol. Some of my favorite memories in that thing was during heavy snow when no one dared get out (except other 4x4s) and I'd be driving around as if everything was fine.

I wouldn't recommend judging an entire company based on a single incident from decades ago that was only about a specific type of product. Overall, what they do is very good and helpful to us consumers. Gathering and processing consumer feedback at the national level in order to help people make informed purchasing decisions and to hold companies accountable for their claims, as well as encourage meaningful improvements, is unquestionably a service that is beneficial to everyone. However, considering what they did to the adorable Samurai, I think it's safe to take their reports with a grain of salt and simply compare their results with at least 1 or 2 other sources instead of relying on their word alone.

Consumer Reports still does the same kind of thing. If every car was "good" people wouldn't buy their magazine. Fiat is the latest automotive casualty due to lack of Consumer Reports favor. They literally counted buyer's difficulty with pairing Bluetooth on the 500L as a "reliability" issue. They failed to recognize the one-year issues of transmission problems of the 500L (which mysteriously only affected US models with the exact same transmission as European models which seemed unaffected), did not continue into the second year of production and continued to lambast the later year models for perceived reliability issues that had been resolved after the first year.
Many of their judgments are purely "opinion" but they pass them off as fact. For example, on the Fiat 500 summary, it says "this two-door suffers from a choppy ride and a noisy cabin, which detract from the fun." .... Ask any 500 owner, and the RIDE that CR is complaining about is the #1 SOURCE of its fun. It actually communicates road feel to you in a way most modern cars do not, which make it very engaging to drive. Yet Consumer Reports seems to think driving a sofa is more fun - therefore they downrate any vehicle that's not cushy in the way they like.
Even their "death rates per million registered vehicles" is incredibly damaging to the industry. It shows larger vehicles as "safer", yet does not account for who the drivers of these vehicles are. Smaller vehicles like a Ford Fiesta or Chevy Sonic tend to be driven by younger less affluent buyers, who as a whole, are at MUCH higher risk of being involved in accidents. Compared to things like Chevrolet Suburbans, which are driven by people who tend to have many more years of experience driving and are less likely to be "hooning" around. When you look at actual crash safety data, Consumer Reports' claim that giant SUVs are nearly twice as safe dissolved into the lies they are.

India have home grown brand that still makes original Jeeps licensed, we have wranglers too coz jeep is officially available in india , we have home grown wrangler competition too . Soon, SUZUKI will start the biggest production facility for the gimny thats in india. Suzuki is planning a lwb version specifically for india and then might export it to other countries as well. So , soon Pakistan might start getting cheaper gimnies coz of the production facility in india.

I had a 1987 Suzuki Samurai it was such a cool vehicle. Drove it across the desert in Nevada, I mean on dirt roads from Jean, NV to Pahrump, NV. Dirt roads the whole with 4 people in the car. It never left me stranded, easy to push start, easy to work on and never got stuck. Only traded it in after a Suzuki dealership messed with the carb and never ran right after that. It was awesome when the boys from Roadkill put a Mopar V8 in one and hauled ass in it.

They seemed to be a cheap plastic copy of the original (1965-1977), the vehicle nich they were meant to recapture. IMO, the biggest problem is Ford left out what made the original desirable. In hindsight the B2 should have been designed with a removable top and an interior that you would not fear getting rained on. That might have made the desirable even today. As is now, unlike 40 year old CJs, no one cares about saving them or rebuilding them.

Fun story: the first jeep was based on a compact truck built by a company called American Bantam. It was optioned by the US Army Quartermaster Corps for modification as a light transport carrier, and then they sent the plans to over a hundred car companies. Ford and Willys overland were the only ones that built one to compete for the contract. Henry Ford was basically trying to steal the truck and take over production for the war effort, and Ford was actually the company that invented the stamped slotted grill that became symbolic of jeeps. Willys was the third or fourth company to build a jeep, even checker, the cab company, put together three crate jeeps from bantam when bantam contracted with them to expand production capacity. Bantam was relegated to building jeep trailers after the army gave away their plans, willys overland died off when they were bought out by Kaiser after a decade of legal battle with bantam about the patents for the jeep, kaiser jeep died when chrysler bought them, and now it's all Fiat. Jeep is a lie.

I really wish they'd bring the Jimney Sierra to the US! I think it would be a huge seller. Most adults now were teens when the original Samurai was out, and many have forgotten the whole rollover debacle (CR also made similar accusations about the Bronco II).

I drive this car for years and i still have one. in my country they named it "katana". I never had serious problem with anything, except the small size and engine size. But still a fun car. And a 65 hp on a 700kg car is no joke.
