  • Welcome to another informative video by Dr. Grant Cooper at Princeton Spine and Joint Center. In this video, Dr. Cooper delves into a crucial but often misunderstood topic - facet joint cysts in the spine. Facet joint cysts, though relatively uncommon, can be perplexing for both patients and non-spine specialists. Dr. Cooper is here to shed light on this subject and help you understand the nuances of facet joint cysts.

    🧠 Understanding the anatomy is key - facet joints are small synovial joints found in the back of the spine, and cysts can form as a result of degeneration and inflammation within these joints.
    👨‍⚕️ Dr. Cooper clarifies that a facet joint cyst itself is not dangerous, but it can cause problems if it compresses or irritates adjacent nerves. He details two scenarios in which facet joint cysts require attention: when they press on nerves causing issues, or when they're a symptom of an inflamed facet joint.
    🔍 Discover the various ways to deal with facet joint cysts, including injections, aspiration, attempting to "pop" the cyst, and surgical removal. Dr. Cooper emphasizes the importance of careful consideration in each approach, especially regarding the potential impact on the nerves.
    🏥 If facet joint cysts contribute to back pain, treating them aligns with addressing facet joint pain in general. Physical therapy and targeted interventions can be effective in managing the symptoms arising from both arthritis and cyst development.
    📌 For a deeper dive into facet joint pain and comprehensive treatment approaches, Dr. Cooper has a dedicated video linked in the description below.

    Are these synovial cysts the same as a Tarlov cyst? I have a feeling the answer is no. My TC is caused by a hole in one of the thecal sac layers that causes a bubble of CSF. It's at L4-L5-S1. I wish there were more research figuring out what causes a Tarlov and how to treat it without surgery.

    I had a synovial cyst, started with transforaminal epidural & aspiration….each gave me about 2 weeks relief…I opted for surgery….laminectomy. Wish I had done it sooner because the cyst had adhered to dura. Also, a hematoma had formed in the cyst because of aspiration!

    Three years ago I had horrible pain from a facet joint cyst that was pressing on a nerve in my lower back. I had an aspiration of the cyst but it didn't work. Three months later I had different doctor do it and it worked. I continue to be pain free. However, the procedure was the worst pain I ever had experienced. I don't know why I couldn't have general anesthesia before having it. I think I broke every bone in the nurses hand that I was squeezing. 😰 Very good information you presented. Thank you. I did a lot of research before having the aspiration. My goal was to prevent surgery. So far it worked.

      @@pritpalsingh1960 I'm sorry. I'm not a doctor. I just know that I had a cyst and I had it aspirated. Ask a doctor if that is possible for you. It was done without general anesthesia. I wish you the best on your journey to find relief.

    Great video. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with a synovial cyst at L4-L5 level that was causing severe left leg pain. Surgery was scheduled for cyst removal and fusion. One week before surgery, the pain went away and surgery was canceled. Never have had any further symptoms. Is it likely that the cyst burst or was absorbed? Or something else that caused the almost immediate relief of pain?

    Doctor, my 16 year old son is just now diagnosed with syrinx on his spinal cord. It's approximately 4 mm in size. I am worried. How may I please contact you? Thank you, please let me know

    • @PrincetonSpineJointCenter
      @PrincetonSpineJointCenter  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Hello, I am sorry to hear of your son’s diagnosis. A syrinx is different than the spinal cysts I describe in this video. He needs to talk first and foremost with a good neurosurgeon who deals with this diagnosis. There are lots of factors they will consider for your son including where in the spinal cord the syrinx is, if it’s growing, if there are symptoms, etc. But a neurosurgeon should be your first phone call to discuss. I wish your son and your whole family all the best.

      @@PrincetonSpineJointCenter Thank you so much for getting back to me. The note from the doctor says moderate sized central spinal cord syrinx extending from the level of mid body of C3 into the upper thoracic spine. I live in Seattle Washington. I have made an appointment with the Seattle children's neuroscience center with Dr. Browd Samuel. He's a neurosurgeon. Is there any doctor who can remove it that you would recommend?

      I have the same question. As teen I had a bulge on my wrist that shrinked by itself now I hope the same will happen with my spinal cyst.

      No. Sometimes they get larger. I have a Tarlov Cyst and it has grown over the years. Absolute hell.
