    Well... I have mixed feelings on how this one turned out. It was truly my hope to get this very close to how it would have looked originally, but the damage was just too much. Can't win 'em all!
    Short of replacing the veneer on the top, my only real option was to make the best of a lousy situation and try to make this piece usable again, even if I DID need to make it a bit darker than it would have been.
    I'm not sure what happened to this piece in its past life, but hopefully in its NEW life, it will be taken care of and loved, and avoid the landfill. That's really what my main goal ended up being.

    I still think you should have some little plates made that can be attached to each piece that read:"Restored by Angie at Transcend Furniture Gallery". Maybe also leave a space for you to add the date it was redone? Decades in the future pieces redone by you will demand premium prices and be highly valued because of the quality of your work.

      It's also an interesting aspect of provenance. For instance I have seen repairers' names pencilled in French clock cases - this kind of history builds up and makes the objects richer and more interesting.

    • @lorelleblackwell8556
      @lorelleblackwell8556 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@andreakirkby I hadn't even thought of that about clocks and watches! My aunt's husband was a WWII vet that lost part of one leg mid-thigh. He was a deep sea diver, retrieving bodies and parts from underwater crashes. No longer being able to do the physical work, and prosthetics being what they were in the 1940s, he needed a new profession and went to school to build and repair clocks and watches. Every piece he worked on was signed and dated in very tiny lettering and numbers. Decades later when I inherited a very expensive watch from a different aunt I took it in to be cleaned and the young man was stunned to use the jewelers loop and see the numerous notations made inside the watch back cover when my aunt had taken it to be worked on in some manner over the decades. I still have the watch and it's almost 100 years old. Angie is a skilled artisan and should be signing her work as the old craftsmen did.

I am relatively new to this channel and, even though I know nothing about woodworking, something about watching you pour so much time and passion into these pieces of furniture is really hypnotizing. Angie, I used to apply a sealer of some kind where I worked at a custom cabinet and door company. My boss would say, "most people won't finish/seal the backs or inside or bottoms of a piece but it's really better for the wood as far as absorbing moisture less and drying less. More even. And besides, it's us."
    It turned out SO BEAUTIFUL 😍. I'D BE PROUD TO OWN IT. And, I use coasters btw. 😃 💜

Wearing our dings and stains with a certain humility, self-compassion and pride is far more satisfying. It's not a silk purse but I rate it as a rayon purse from a sow's ear. What is the value of a piece of furniture made out of glued sawdust covered by a very thin veneer?

    • @TranscendFurnitureGallery
      @TranscendFurnitureGallery  ปีที่แล้ว +71

      More than 3/4 of mid century furniture was constructed this way, to save money AND valuable resources (particularly exotic woods like mahogany and teak), and thank goodness they did it this way or there'd be none left. It may not appeal to you, but it makes the furniture extremely stable from a wood movement perspective, where solid wood is very prone to cracks and checks when it expands and contracts with temperature and humidity. It allows MORE furniture to be made from the same exotic wood, rather than one single temperamental piece of furniture, and it makes it more affordable for both the maker and the consumer. Have a look at retail prices of this furniture and the fact that they sell like hotcakes.. and then ask where the value is, haha. It's not just mid century though. A LOT of antiques with stunning woodgrain are also veneers. Veneer doesn't mean cheap. And the pressed wood of the mid century era is not the same as the 1980s and 1990s junk.
      It's a very important question you asked though, so thank you for bringing it up! Not many people actually realize just how much furniture is made this way... most of it has been passed down in families as "solid wood" and it's not. There's just a misunderstanding of how and why manufacturers did this.
      The 80s are different. lol That's when factory furniture when to Sh*t. lol

      @TranscendFurnitureGallery  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      THANK YOU! Yes, it is very true- a LOT of people don't realize that a massive portion of furniture they think is 'solid wood' isn't, and why that isn't always a bad thing. And also that it often has no bearing on the literal value of these pieces. I think the 1980s weaker pressed wood and melamine tops sort of tainted everyone's view of prior/older manufactured substrates, that are actually leaps and bounds better than that stuff...AND found in almost all quality mid century furniture.

    I watch a lot of furniture refinishers/flippers. A LOT. I'm always telling my husband about them "this one does fast flips" or this one likes to re-design the structure" etc. Yesterday I had him watch one of your videos. I told him "of all the furniture refinishers, Angie is by far the best. She is not a flipper or refinisher. She is a true artist and completes her pieces just like a fine art restorer." You really are a Master Woodworking artist and I'm so happy you share your work with all of us! 💜

    This table turned out gorgeous! You say that you wanted to return it to factory finish, but honestly if you had you would have erased the “patina of its life” that makes it the unique piece of furniture that it is. There is also something to be said about purchasing a piece of furniture that has been previously used/loved. I try to keep my furniture in as good of shape as I possibly can, but I live in a home, not a museum. There are some things that I am very precious about, but I try to keep in mind that everything that gets used will eventually show its use and that’s okay. Don’t be so hard on yourself, you are one of the best furniture refinishers/restoration person out there. Keep up the good work and give yourself some praise and credit. You deserve it!

Stunning transformation. 😍

    Dont kid yourself! This table is very attractive. You do very neat work, which I appreciate. Back in 1985 I purchased a dining room set for our house. A large Queen Anne style, solid oak (sorry) china cabinet, banquet sized table with three leaves, two armed captains chairs, four side chairs. It was Drexel Heritage. Cost = $10,000. If I had it to do over again since Im smarter now, I wouldnt hesitate to shop used. There are some really very nice pieces out here ready for a second chance. And many are due to your talents. Congratulations. Kudos to your quality control manager, Nacho. Good help is hard to find.

    If anyone is going to buy an old dining table they must understand that it is old and used. But that adds to the character of the peice and it tells a story. If these tables could tell their story it would be of fun laughter and the essential dimension of the family meeting together and keeping in touch. But as usual this is a great job. Thanks for sharing this with us.

    I have my mother's Drexel buffet it has 4 drawers in the center with top drawers and doors on each side. Her house got pretty damaged from Hurricane Michael. Roof ripped up and everything inside got soaked from Hurricane Michael. It looks pretty hazy but I love it anyway and have my TV on it in my living room. She got this buffet and matching table and chairs from a second hand store around 1960. It was in her dining room all my life. She passed away in July and her old broken down furniture is so precious to me. I actually have 3 dressers and this buffet. All my life long furniture and is in use in my home now. I watch you and it makes me want to redo her stuff so bad. Everything you redo is absolutely beautiful. Just lovely. But I just don't have the courage to even start. I feel like I'll mess her stuff up even more than it looks now.

    That reminds me of the dining table my Mom and Dad had: and yes, they got in the 1950s. I don't know what happened to it after they had both passed away. It had the same type of extensions that one has, and we could get 10-12 people around it if you were really "friendly." I miss that table and the matching solid wood chairs -- such nice clean lines and timeless elegance. You did this table proud. 👏

    I love that you restored this to such beauty! We have a very similar table we use as a desk. Bought it new about 35 years ago so it isn't MCM. It has leaves too but it's square, and the solid legs are round, but the colour and everything else is the same. I'm glad I won't have to repair ours since we've taken care of it, because that was a heck of a lot of work on yours - but worth it. I have a soft spot for teak and Danish modern. Brava! 🤗🇨🇦💖
