  • In this video we're up to the clear coat stage on the repair and paint procedure of my Corolla Tailgate, we're painting in my garage. I wasn't happy with the first coat of clear so I decided to sand it back and flow coat it.

Spraying at home one of the mistakes is to positioning the panels oblique and horizontal , panels on vertical les nibs in the clear coat, apart for the roof , I'm wiping the panel between each basecoat with the sticky cloth , before starting to spray make sure you have an full wet floor and wait for dust to settle down 10-15 minutes, preferably nothing on the walls around the spray area and wet walls preferably, try to move slowly , works pretty well , sorry for my broken English x

true I have learned a lot from gunny. I have same idea here I use a 24 inch barn fan way over kill for the little area he has. I also run 2 air purifiers to get rid of the suspended dust. I just put in a gas radiant tube heater forced air furnace absolute no no. And I use a pro-lite with 110 cap unless its really thick clear a plus gun works better.

I've tried a lot of clears and finally went back to Sherwin-Williams Finish 1 Clear, FC720 Overall clear or FC710 spot repair (great for wheels). They both use the same hardeners. Lays down nice, hard to run and quick set up time. I don't think I'll ever try another clear coat. You can smash this stuff on and not worry about running it unless your hand gets stuck in one spot and you keep the trigger open. If Sherwin-Williams ever gets a wheel coat color match system or wants to work on one with me, I'll go full SW.
Not sure why I ever tried and wasted my money trying so called "better" clears. Absolutely love the Finish 1 clear coat.

Nice job gunny - not trying to teach a man of your skills anything, but I've found that spraying in those sort of conditions a mini gun works better for the smaller jobs as you aren't blowing such a large volume of air about and consequently not raising so much dust to get in the finish.

    Thanks Gunny.
Glad to see even the Pro's get those little nibs and contamination as well.
No matter how hard I try at home, I still get them........bastards!
When I sprayed my Ford GTP in blueprint blue I just ended up giving it a few more coats of clear so I had that
bit extra to sand out and polish.
I like the whole DIY in a shed at home idea Mate.....I reckon a heap of us can relate to it.
I need to get one of those infrared setups though

Had covid twice now, first was early march 2020, then again this year early march. It takes a while to feel 100% again but choke down some vitamins or even just a multi and it helps clear your head a bit if you feel tired or foggy.
As for sandpapers, we used 4cr and mirka before. 4cr is cheap garbage and mirka leaves deep scratches with the block that the even orbital sometimes struggles to remove for some reason. The price of the mirka ones shot up here recently tho so we switched to kovax and i really like them, although i remember you said a while ago they've dropped in quality a bit, but it's better than the cheap papers we used so i can't complain, haha.
Anyway, hope you get back to 100% soon. Have a nice weekend, gunny

Hi mate, with winter in Melbourne approaching, you need to be aware that the metal roof will attract condensation which can drip onto your new paint..you can probably guess how I know this... a good solution is to get one of those 'wedding tent' things on line which are around 3m x 6m and cost around $100 - they keep the drips off.

Really nice finish for a home garage paint job there Gunny as it looks like doesn't really need anything doing to it but it's hard to tell in the video 🤔
I use a lot of 3M products but I've just got a couple of boxes (p320 & P400) of the Quartz 150mm sanding discs from Chris at Spray Guns Direct and I have to say they do cut very well, using a P400 I get just over one wing (fender) per disc but I still finish it off with a 3M P600 blue foam backed disc which are expensive but leave a great finish.
Hope you are soon back to full health mate as covid can take a while to get over so take it easy 🙏👍 John UK.

Hands down, wiping the panel with a clean micro fiber cloth with water as the final wipe, brings down that static electricity, especially on flat panels, dramatically reduces the dirt, lint, etc. Helped me.a bunch in the garage.

When you pour from a full container/tin of liquid, like the DTT, turn the can 180° so that the outlet is on the highest point, then hold the cup up to the outlet instead of leaving it on the bench. Your spillage and loss will be almost nil. Do same with fuel cans etc, and hold funnel against opening. Tip from an old dude.

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I always do, I'm more than familiar with the method. But these PPG cans are terribly designed. When full you can't avoid spillage. And the hardener cans have the hole in the middle of the can, not much you can do there but get the pouring lids.

When painting at home, I'll go down to my local paint supplier and order the paint based on the factory color code. Given aging will change the paint, the factory color won't match exactly. Can I ask my paint supplier to do a color match to get closer? I'm hoping not to have to blend into adjacent panels. Is that unrealistic?

Try waiting longer between coats. That usually happens when you go too quickly. It's called solvent boil, you're not allowing the gasses to release between coats, they get trapped under the surface and pop, that gives the faded look. But there's good news, it will usually polish up. Sand it with 2,000 then 3,000 then polish.

Maybe my hardener is too slow as the temperature was about 21 degrees 🤔
