    I just roasted my first batch of coffee ever in a **West Bend Stir Crazy,** 100 grams green beans. I took it a little beyond the first crack, it took 13:30 minutes. The outside got hot but not alarmingly so. I kept the large plastic dome on it, lifted it periodically to let the smoke/condensation out. I used an infrared thermometer and the surface of the plate got to at least 409F. The Stir Crazy switches direction periodically. I got a nice looking, pretty even, medium roast. After roasting it weighed 88g.

      Seems like a good job.

    In this instance you'll probably want to measure by volume instead of weight to figure out the optimal amount of beans per roast, 150g of roasted beans is a lot more beans than 150g of green beans because of water weight. You could also use green beans to figure out what flips over the bar best and then weigh them while they are still green of course.

    Typically popcorn roasting involves use of oils which serve to facilitate heat transfer from the metal surface to the kearnles, but here we have only a very limited dry contact patch given the curved surface of the beans against the flat heated metal (and also the contact between beans, of course). In a drum roaster geometry, I think heat transfer would be more uniform and on average faster with these same two modalities of heat transfer. Of course, in an air roaster, the whole bean surface is heated more uniformly. Time is an important consideration in roasting, and extended roast times can lead to suboptimal "baked" results in terms of flavors. I'm afraid my opinion would be, aside from a drum roasting scenario, that this pan-based approach is at best capable of limited success. I'm more of a fan of hot air roasting, using pressurized hot airflow to move the beans, but drum roasters are obviously also effective, and perhaps vigorous hand-stirring of a limited quantity of beans on a metal surface with controlled temperatures could be as well. But that said, I enjoy seeing your experiments.

      That is some great information shared. Thanks a lot. Do you recommend any specific roaster which is hot air? See my new video on WHIRLEY pop. I have the same question, is it better to roast beans quickly or slowly or in between like 10mts mark?

      @@AjusCafe Yes, it did, though mine might be older and not have a heat sensor. My first batch was very mixed - some dark beans and some still green which my bbe grinder did NOT like. For the next two batches I left the lid on and regularly swirled everything around which gave a very uniform roast. I did remove the red cap to let smoke out and did it all outside on the deck.

      @@AjusCafe It must have been 10 to 20 minutes (I know, too vague, but I forget, but can let you know next time.) I do have a thermometer so can let you know that, too. I am out of country for another two weeks but will roast again by mid May.

    Maybe have a small fan blowing on popcorn machine to keep the unit cooler on the outside ?

    Hi Aju, l started on one very much similar, but it was raised at the back, so the beans would gather at the bottom of the roaster and the control arm would move the beans. On average it would take 20minutes for a roast.

    • @AjusCafe
      @AjusCafe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That seems to be a dedicated roaster they sell in Amazon. Guess what, I'm going to do a review of that, the 45 degree angled roaster this week. Your comments and suggestions are welcome.
