Because Pharrell is on a whole other level of talent. People who aren't older than 16 may not know this but he was in this sort of a big deal rap group called N.E.R.D and his production skills are amazing, not to mention his part with Billionaire Boys Club.

But people like these two are smart enough to put their prejudices aside (be it race, color, cultural background or even genre-oriented) to favor any and all possibilities of something positive being brought to life - because of a small chat about trivial things. It might end up in a huge collaboration. Or it might not - they might just end up as good friends. And good friends introduce each other to their friends. It's called networking. Essential in the music industry. A best case scenario could be a success story of Get Lucky proportions, and the worst thing would be that both of them lost 30 minutes of their lives. Awkwardness, there or not, becomes an invisible parenthesis when the bigger picture of potential payoff compared to risk is taken into consideration.
