Most GPS speedometer apps can't measure speed past 1,000 - 1,200 MPH, yet I am sure newer GPS processors in the phones can measure much faster speed internally, as they are much faster nowadays in term of CPU speed.

You should actually clamp your phone on a sticky phone holder that sticks to the glass, so that you'll be able to measure the speed accurately, because shaking can cause your speedometer to measure the speed almost inaccurately.
775 kph = almost 482 mph. The rated top speed for a 737-800 is Mach .82. A top "mph" speed for jets and airliners is silly. They rate it in Mach. Why? Because it has to be up well over 30,000' to get it to that speed. If there was a day where there was absolutely zero air movement up that high, then perhaps that would be the case, but those situations are almost non-existent. Example: I was flying to France a few years back on a 767 which routinely cruises at Mach .80. Using the theory of 35,000' with no wind, the speed would be about 560 mph. We had a 200 mph tailwind, and our ground speed was 760 mph! Had we been going the other way, though, our ground speed would have only been 360 mph. So if you've ever wondered why a trip from the east coast to the west coast almost always takes longer - there you go...
Wish someone would do this on a Concorde if it still flew
good idea, what pity Concorde was so much ahead of its time... no GPS hand held devices, but the GPS satellites at least were already up there.

Yes, no need WiFi, but make sure the GPS/Location is active. Even in flight mode.

I don't think this app works too well on planes, considering the fact that the top speed of a Boeing 737-800 is 588 miles per hour.
Why not? 588mph is equivalent to 940km/h. Measurements in the app are made in km/h, and top speed measured is 775km/h
