To make a short story long, I'm trying to get back into bass. I dropped out of it a couple decades ago before I really even learned to play. Basically got bored because it seemed the choices were either drone along on root notes behind a band, or slap... which sounds like somebody dropped a bass down a flight of stairs. And I wanted to play something more entertaining. Anyhow, about a year ago I bought a $100 Rogue 5-string to try and get back into it. I went cheap because I wasn't sure about it. And the bass pretty much sat untouched since. Now I'm out of work on disability, lots of time on my hands. So I started looking at the bass again. Was going to treat myself for my birthday by starting some upgrades. Starting with the bridge since the new strings I bought with the base won't feed through the stock bridge (oops). I was all set on the Babicz FCH bridge. Not at all sure why I even clicked on this video since a whammy bar was not on my radar. Still not sure about the whammy, but never would have found Kahler without this video. So, thanks for that. And thanks for showing some of the subtle things you can do with a whammy. As an old-school metalhead, my experience with whammies didn't include subtlety.
The only thing I see about the Kahler that I don't like is that changing string height looks cumbersome. Other than that, the fixed version looks like it locks down the strings like nothing else I've seen, including Babicz.
I love your story! You're not alone, brother. I'm glad my video inspired you somehow.
Thankfully, adjusting string height on this Kahler is easy: dive the trem, move the string to the side, use the set screw, then put the string back and you're good to go.
I hope you get back into playing bass, consider this your sign.
@@jakekiernan33 I can see the whammy making it easier. But I'm still not sure I want a whammy. The fixed version wouldn't be as simple.
@@jakekiernan33 Just went and looked at the site again. No whammy for me. No way I can justify the extra $300 at this point.
I understand! But, if you know how these temolo bridges are made, you know they're worth the price. I have machine shop experience, and I'm a happy customer, so I completely agree with their pricing. I agree with your perspective too!
@@jakekiernan33 I don't question the value. It's simply not in my budget.
Kahler bridges don't get the love they deserve. Nice video.
Cheers from Uruguay!
I totally agree! Thanks for your support.
The Kahler title pulled me in but as a guitarist I immediately recognised the sound of a sustainer. I've not seen one on a bass before and it works really well. Are the first to do this? Good luck with the channel, you deserve a lot more subscribers
I appreciate you!! I haven't seen this mod combo either, i might be the first!
Nice Spector!
Thank you!
Peavey put out some Dyna basses in the 80's that came with Kahlers from the factory.
Very cool bass you have there!
I didn't know that! I appreciate you.
I have a Kahler on my 63 jazz bass. Had it put on in early 80’s.
Nice!!
Them Kahler bridges are like my spirit animal, the moment I learned about them I have never forgotten them, looking to buy as my first ever guitar a Dean ML Kahler for around 1.5k grand and after that build my dream guitar and bass with Khaler bridges aswell.
You're so right! Great ideas.
Doug Wimbish did some interesting stuff with a tremolo on his Spector. The ones I've tried seem to change the tone of the bass after install. Almost a sort of "compression" effect on the tonal range. You lose something but you gain the possibilities from the trem. Similar to what happens with guitars that have fixed bridges vs tremolos.
I've seen Doug play live, he's crazy. Sadly I've never seen him play with a trem. I know what you mean, any trem install will change something. The biggest difference I noticed after my Kahler install was the sustain. Some of it is absorbed by the springs in the cam, so it doesn't last exactly as long.
That Kahler look awesome
I agree!!
Anxiously waiting for you to whack the headstock off the wall...
Lmao, I've hit the wall many times
😂
I wish you could really crank up the distortion to see how it sounds
my dream bass mods
Nothing stopping you!
@@jakekiernan33 money 💀
Rip😭
A tremolo and a sustainer: awesome
Factsss
Cool stuff! Your style fits the trem and sustainer. That kind of technique requires the right kind of music.
My bass player got on back in the 90s. For a regular bassist it really doesn’t work.
It’s really for jazz or ambient music. The bass, as the foundation, really doesn’t need any variation in pitch.
I completely agree. That is specifically why I start my videos with "I'm not your average bass player". Don't worry, I'm writing some regular bass playing stuff with my dad that will be released this winter.
@@jakekiernan33 That’s awesome!
john gallagher from the metal band RAVEN used a custom tremolo bass goin back many years
Les Claypool too!
khalers are a luxury, built a custom guitar just for the khaler and love it
So true!
I stuck a vega trem on a strat to experiment with trems before i tried one on bass getting same vibes from this
Experiments make the best experiences!
3:42 STRING SPACING is nr.1 importance imo. I changed from Floyd speedloader system to Floyd original. The string spacing was too wide so I just wasted money and had to replace it with a Floyd rose pro series
True! Fortunately, Kahler bridges have full customization for string spacing, you can see my strings are really close together.
Whaaaaaat that's killer!!!!
I appreciate you!
@@jakekiernan33 right back at you, brother
Saw Billy Sheehan use one back 30 years ago with Tallas
Now THAT'S a throwback
Looks really cool to mess around with.
It's definitely fun!
I’m really badly wanting to build a p bass partscaster with a trem and killswitch on it. So far all I’ve got are the electronics.
Talk to sales@KahlerUSA.com! They'll hook you up.
I knew I guy that modded his rickenbacker 4003 with a whammy lol. Wild shit
I've never seen one on a Rickenbacker!
Les claypool has a trem on one of his basses
Famously!
- How high can it go? I'd love to be able to do obnoxious squeals but i feel like I'd be snapping strings left and right. Have you had strings snap on you any more often compared to a fixed bridge?
- You said the nut isn't locking, but are your tuners?
-If you're in E standard tuning, it can go maybe 1.5 to 2 steps up before the G string snaps.
-Squeals are possible, but they're significantly harder on bass because of the frequency range, nothing like Dimebag Darrell.
-Good tuners matter! If you have bad tuners, your instrument will never hold tuning with a trem. These Spector Euro bases come with Gotoh tuners which are some of the best you can get, a huge reason why this bass stays in tune as you saw. I appreciate your questions!
Are you ever planning on making this bass fretless? I would assume that would make a crazy interesting sound
Definitely not this bass, but maybe I'll have a fretless bass someday
Most Epic!🎼🌐Thank you 🖖/////

Lmaooo
Vibrato! But cool video. thanks.
I appreciate you!
Expensive af but looks do awsome if i ever comr into enough money to purchase a 6 string version i will!
Your right, this stuff is not cheap. But worth the investment!
I spend most of my bass playing time unplugged - unamplified - so the unamplified sound of a bass is really important to me.
Does the kahler tremolo bridge change the unamplified sound of the instrument?
Does it make it darker? Or muddy? Thanks :)
Great question! The Kahler changed the sound slightly, but nothing to worry about. The most difference i noticed was with sustain; some of the string vibration is being absorbed by the springs in the cam, so notes don't last as long in my opinion. Tone is still great!
@@jakekiernan33 Very reassuring! Thanks.
Love what you are doing: you and your instrument, evolving together :)
I appreciate you!!
do they make a 4 string version
Of course! See 2:44
@@jakekiernan33 you dident mention 4
You should check out naruse yoshiro if you interested in whammy bar bass
I'll take a look!
Hey brother, I’ve got a whole album’s worth of material that needs some bass, would you be interested in doing some recording?
I appreciate you! I'm very busy writing an album of my own, but maybe in the future!
Thats a humongous bridge
I agree! I chose the XL because it needed to cover the hole from the previous countersunk bridge.
you mean whammy bass?
Uh
why play bass when u can player 6 strings or more
Because everyone else already player 6 strings or morer
I want one! Whammy me!
Yo😭
sir, this is highly inappropriate and i urge you to stop
(also, reported for nudity)
Nah you wrong for that
Oh come on! This shit is completely useless (I gotta buy a sustaniac now thanks)
Lmaoooo😭
@@jakekiernan33 can you tell me about the placement of it? can it be placed somewhere so it's not in the way of slapping?
Are you asking about the Kahler tremolo or the sustainiac?
@@jakekiernan33 the sustaniac, I actually didn't know they made it for bass.
Sustainiacs must be in a neck pickup placement, at least 3 inches away from the bridge pickup. Also, I don't recommend buying a sustainiac and installing it yourself because they are sentient and will drive you insane trying to make it work.
He looks like he's into Woke movement
That's not very nice of you, Jeremy.
