Its not a job that should be taken lightly and is very dangerous if done wrong. I learned wood working at a trade school as a teenager and we weren't allowed to use the router untill our second year.

Oh man... I'm so tempted to get one and slap it in a budget bass now. Les Claypool inspired me to pick up the bass all those years ago, and I bet the Kahler sounds great when paired with a funky envelope filter pedal. Great video!

@@rinaldofuenteslopez7366 You should definitely install it in a cheap bass or pay a professional to do it. If you pay someone make sure they have experience with such things. Kahler isn’t a brand name that even modern guitar techs are too familiar with. Definitely make sure your bass and bridge are compatible because there is a forward facing saddle version and a rearward facing saddle version. It is crucial you install the he correct one for the bass or it won’t work at all. That brings us to this version of the Kahler bass whammy bar. This is the new version that just came out this year. This is actually the first bass this new Kahler bass bridge was installed on. I am very fortunate to work for Kahler and I get to test these things before they go to market. This one can be either forward or rearward, it can be locked into a fixed bridge, and it has a clutch. There is even more but that’s a lot of differences from the model it will replace.
Sure, I used the router bit you can get from StewMac. I also used a bosh colt router. Just remember safety first and don’t use any tool you are not trained on.

I'd have gotten a Kahler if I had more money to spend, but the reviews for the cheap one say it's decent. If it turns out to be a complete flop, I'll just try to build a whamola lol

Good video! Im wondering about the lock on the bridge. On Kahlers website it says "LOCKING CAM DISCONTINUED ON ALL BASS TREMOLOS". Does that mean the one that you have is a prototype with the locking screw, and now Kahler wont be putting them on?
@@DAW92 I just had a very long discussion with Gary Kahler about this and you are correct, it does say that on the website. A while ago Kahler made a different version of the bass trem that had a lock but it was different and they discontinued it and started designing the bass trem in this video. The 2024 bass trem was not yet listed on the website (I didn’t know that) but it will be now and the statement that LOCKING CAM DISCONTINUED ON ALL BASS TREMOLOS will be deleted. Hey I just got this Mexican strat, put the Floyd standard on it. The intonation sux past the 12 fret. I had it setup by a good store. The guitar doesnt sound that good either and I have a Duncan distortion. Any experience with these guitars?

I was under the impression you should adjust the truss rod a quarter turn every couple hours to avoid stressing the wood too fast and causing issues? You seemed to crank it quite a bit more.

I have a 6 string Ibanez SoundGear with a Kahler trem. It tends to go out of tune every time I engage the trem. I have to give the bar a good tug and it goes back in tune. What adjustments can I make to prevent this from happening?
@@meshica7 make sure you have a properly cut nut with well polished slots, preferably made of graphite. Try to use no more than 2.5 to 3 wraps on the string posts.
@@REXYLAB to say that would be ignoring physics. tho if the nut is made from a kind of plastic that "lubricates itself" when friction is applied (sorry I don't know the english term for this) that might do the job. I'm guessing your nut is the same, so that solves the issue. Am I also correct to assume that because of the more tension, the strings also can't snap out from the nut while using the tremolo? This thing looks pretty promising, I'm just trying to find anys cons to it that I would have to be aware of. How does it handle detuning?

Well, I saw it so that’s a start. Using a whammy bar on a bass is different. To hear how people use it check out primus and victor Wooten, they both use our bridges.
@@REXYLAB they were the main reason I decided to put a trem bridge on this project I explained it pretty dumbly in that comment but I wasn't sure how the bridge was actually attached to the body itself. I've looked at more designs of tremolo bridges and I can loosely understand them. I'm not entirely sure but I'm starting to understand it better.
Scale length is 100% player preference. This will work with any scale length. Some basses need forward facing and some need rearward facing. That is entirely dependent on the design of the bass. For example, this Yamaha bass needed forward facing but a jazz bass would need rearward facing. This is because of saddle placement for intonation and where the saddles need to be placed.

Les Claypools basses (both the Carl Thompsons and Pachyderms run Kahler tremolo, cant remember which ones they are) have the bridges more closer to the neck than the edge. Specter Sound studios reviewed a regular scale bass with Kahler and mentioned the strings having more tension than usual. So my theory was that the setup of using the short scale bass with light set strings like Claypool has balances out tension nicely.

This makes me think the bridges would work best with medium and short scale basses that got the bridge more towards the middle of the body
