  • Join us on a mudlarking adventure in the Victorian Holiday Resort of Lundin Links. We find beautiful, and dramatic, transferware; gorgeous tiny sea-shells to fill old dug utility bottles with tiny shells; and we take a look at the history of this remarkable Scottish coastal village, in the East Neuk of Fife.

We return to Lundin Links, a beautiful coastal village that was largely constructed to accommodate Victorian tourists. This is where we talked about the Selkie Folk, and, when we were last here, the megaliths/standing stones that have stood for thousands of years! Today, we want say a little about Lundin Links the holiday resort, just to bring things together from several of our videos from this part of the coast.
You have asked us about transferware on several occasions, so we dip into that subject today - we will follow this information up in two weeks when we take a closer look at the subject. Its a great day to talk about transferware because we finds an amazing pictorial piece featuring a very clear, and a wee bit creepy, face! We think its one of the best pieces of transferware we have ever found!
There are so many really beautiful and tiny wee shells around our feet today, so we decide to collect and pile them up - they are so pretty we decide to take the smallest ones home with us and pop them into some very old, dug, utility bottles! They look so sweet that we decided to bottle up a some of the other very small things we find around our coast - sea glass, and coal dust! They look great!
Nicole takes a few of the pieces we collected today and gets to work turning them into gorgeous items of jewellery!
We hope you enjoyed today's video... Thank you so much!

    --Update on Scotland's COVID restrictions--
We continue to follow restrictions so that we can work safely, responsibly, and legally.
Guidelines in Scotland have now changed. We are now free to travel throughout Scotland and meet with up to 6 others.
    --Our policies--
Since March 2020, we have met with no one at all - and we continued to isolate even when restrictions were relaxed.
We never film in a busy location - aside from maintaining isolation, we could not make restful, calming, or relaxing content in a busy area.
Since March 2020 we have restricted our travel to distances that allow us to get to our location, film our content, and return home, without ever visiting local amenities, entering any buildings etc. This gives us a reasonable window to work in while also maintaining that we are not out for very long.
We only film once a week, and we always do that mid-week. If we arrive in an area and people are present, we leave without getting out of the car.
Our policies are simple and entirely concerned with maintaining social distancing so that we can be safe and so that we can ensure the safety of others. We will continue to follow these policies fully, and we will cease outdoor filming altogether should government guidance change.

The face reminds me of Posiedon, and it looks like there's the hint of Greek key design on the shard too

Your not the Lady of the Lake or the Loch, but you might be:)
Standing on the shore communing with the sea and sky... very peaceful
Soon, you'll both be able to venture to the Highlands again...won't that be nice:)
    Cape May Diamonds!,
I'm from the New Jersey Shore although I now live in Ferndale, Washington State.
Cape May is a lovely place and my wife Suzan and I have spent many days birdwatching and walking the beaches,
but alas we've never found a Diamond.
We had our honeymoon at Wildwood Crest, just north of the Cape .
It's beaches are wide but we don't have your tides.
    Thank you for the memories:)
Scotland and Golfing... of course, that's really a no brainer!
Regarding Smartees adhesives, I spent many years as a picture framer and made a lot of Shadow Boxes with all kinds of artifacts, cloth to coins to collectables ,ribbons...
    you name it.
The best glue for me was Silicone, which not only holds most everything rough or slick to the backing, but being a bit flexible , acts as a shock absorber if the piece is bumped.
But most important is the fact that the adhesive can be removed without damaging the object.
I was a bit longwinded today, but I just couldn't help commenting.
    Cheers,
    Rik

Hello! We're slow responders this week! Thank you so much - not long winded at all, and what a great tip! The silicone adhesive is an awesome idea, and would work great with these wee lids!
I searched for Cape May online - wow! It looks lovely there! What a lovely place to spend time in... We'll cross our fingers that a diamond finds you one day! :D
Yes! Its very exciting - now that we can travel much further than before, we're making some plans. I reckon we will leave it a few weeks to allow things to settle - we have a few places we really want to get back to! :D
Ah, the sea and sky... its easy to get lost somewhere between them on a good day! :D
Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

Oh my😲😁, looked like another fabulous day at Lundin Links🙌🏻!!! The sun makes it look deceptively warm, but Nicole's coat speaks volumes to the contrary 😁🤭.
Reading the comments, alot of your TH-cam family came up with some great guesses👍🏻. Poseidon, Marley and Bacchus👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I'm inclined to agree with Gill on it being a "not so happy" visage of Bacchus the God of wine/intoxication 🤔. Although with that grimace it looks like the morning after ending up in his cups. YIKES!!!😬🤣🤭. He makes quite a fetching pendant...that one will definitely be a conversation starter for the person wearing it👍🏻. And the pendent with the lily🙌🏻. Faded to perfection making the picture look so delicate 🥰.
All those tiny sea shells(a beach 🏖️ in a bottle would be heavenly 😍)...and the white smooth stones... they're called Cape diamonds in the US you say🤔. I'm going to have to Google them and their provenance👩🏼‍💻🖱️.
So lovely and lucky to have that stretch of beach on the coast line to yourselves 🙌🏻. Especially not having to edit out "video bombers" caught on camera wandering into view🤦🏼‍♀️.
Blessings to you and your family and friends. 🤞🏻 And truly hoping the lockdown lifting is going well for ALL our friends across the pond.
Thank you for another 👍🏻 amazing day at the shore and video.☺️🤗🤭😘

Lundin Links is such a lovely spot... and that beach! It just keeps going!! Haha! Yes the enigma of Scottish weather... sun is out, it could be freezing! The clouds have settled back down on the hill-tops today, but they will lift soon and we might get heat as well as sunshine!
Haha! Bacchus first thing in the morning! Ouch! That certainly would explain the expression! :D It is a striking piece - I wish we found pieces like that more often, though the lily is the other side of the coin - just a very pretty wee piece, perfect in its own way! :D
The term "Cape My Diamonds", they are really lovely but often clearer than the quartz we found... Cape May looks very pretty too!
Its so funny, a few people have asked, why there are so few people at the beach... Its true to say that the beaches of Fife do not get the attention they deserve, and that Scottish weather can be a little off-putting for a lot of folks... but that suits us very well! We also like to go at awkward times of the day, when we know there will only be a few dog walkers... It is a great privilege to have so much wonderful space. :D
Thank you so much... lock down is easing here, though we are not making many changes just yet... We hope things are beginning to look good for you in the States. xo
Its a day for the wellies today... we're off to stroll around in a river! :D
Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

Hello! I think I can help some with the bit of pottery- not an ID of an existing plate unfortunately. I'm pretty sure what is being shown is a representation of a roman theater mask. The leaves make me think of tragedy and comedy, but you can see the somewhat grotesque features in most roman theater masks. I would recommend looking at the mosaic of a theater mask from the House of the Faun in Pompeii, for a mask showing the leaves I would recommend the mosaic from the House of the Tragic Poet.

Love that beach in a shell collection. Would love to come across something like that. I just got back from Sanibel Florida. I had fabulous luck one day at low tide, but collectors were crawling all over each other. Still I love the sound of the waves, which believe it or not sound a bit different than the tides in Florida. Go figure. 38:26 bottom right, fossil or raised tile, it is tan and brown, just left of the logo? Great weather on your private beach.

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh! We say it so often, but we are so incredibly lucky to live where we do and have the space that we have around us! Aside from the odd dog walker, it was such a quiet day and the weather is just moving into Spring! Lucky! Very lucky!
So glad yo hear you had a good day and hopefully a really nice break in Sanibel! Strange to think waves have an accent! :D Its funny, we are between two large rivers, though this one, the Forth, is full of force... the other, the Tay, is usually very calm and flat!
I couldn't see the piece, but I'll have a closer look later!
Cheers for now! Thank you co much! :D xo

@Scottish Mudlarking. Hi Nicole and Craig! I immediately thought of Japanese kabuki masks when I saw the face on the plate, even though the colours aren’t the same - the expression is! Also, would you be able to tell us about Craig’s tattoo’s above the elbows - they are very unusual! Keep up the great work guys, really enjoy your videos!

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Ostrov! That face really does have that theatrical look about it... We didn't see it but a few comments have pointed in that direction and it certainly looks like it is that kind of an image! That expression is very Kabuki!
Ok, so, those tattoos began in New Zealand, in 2003, with just a solid O on the left arm and a I on the right. Several years later I had an Edinburgh tattooist continue the pattern to make two armbands. So, the idea behind them - I am fascinated by symmetry and asymmetry and I wondered if both could be present at the same time! I began with binary O I and then decided to alternate outline/filled so that the left arm is filled Os and outlined Is and the right arm is filled Is and outlined Os... The idea is that each of the binary figures is equally binary, symmetric and asymmetric - if that makes sense - so it means (to me, if no one else) infinite possibility and the limitlessness of meanings. It is a figurative representation of an idea I fixate on! haha!
Thank you so much! Best wishes xo

@@scottishmudlarking so neat! I was wondering if they were symbolic in that way, especially since I noticed they were filled in but in opposite ways. Many thanks! We made a choice when we started our channel, nearly a year ago, that we would do things a wee bit different. We wanted to share a little of the place we live - that's why we do short snippets of history or something about a local person in the past, and its why we try to share a little of the beauty in the place we live. We usually include a time strip with each video - its in the description unless we ran out of time that week - so please do skip over any sections you do not enjoy. We plan to keep doing the environmental sections because very many people have told us that they find them enjoyable, peaceful and relaxing.
