It has been too long... how many years? Well... too many, but we are back in the home of Scottish Spongeware, at one of our favourite beaches to travel to - Kirkcaldy!
We're looking for anything associated with the heyday of Pottery here in the 'lang toun' - a hub of Victorian and Edwardian industry that sent its exports out across the oceans! We have seen items of crockery, that were made here, in museum displays in Australian and New Zealand! It is almost impossible to imagine what a global impact this place once made - how it must have looked back then, the smoke filled air, the coal strewn beaches, and the infamous stench caused by another of the towns famous industries! Enough of that... back to the beach!
Its an amazing day, the sun is shining and the burn is trickling past, carrying the remnants of history... shards of a past long gone, and yet one that remains in the fragments that we find here. The kiln furniture, the sea glass and the pottery pieces carry their beauty across the years, reminding us of the past and becoming beautiful once again, in the present.
Check out these links for more on the potteries and pirate glass!

    Spongeware.
    I know little about it,but I fascinate.
The idea that people took a bit of sponge, snipped away at it,to make such simple, charming dishes, bowls and cups,it is something that enchants me.
Equally enchanting, and I’ve probably said it before,is the sound of Nicole’s voice!
As beautiful as a chirping bird in the springtime, she graces my ears, and I recieve that voice with absolute joy!

Hi N and C! Lovely day at the beach! I received my sea glass package in record time. Thanks for the extra! Happy bday, Craig. Enjoyed the 20% discount but the postage is killing me! Cheers from PA, USA

Thanks ever so much Larisa! So glad to hear the sea glass arrived so quickly :) There might be an option for economy postage which is cheaper, but not tracked and it might take 4 -6 weeks... it's also not insured to the full value but I am happy to try it out if you like! :) x

the lady that sold the seconds , very clever woman; the DUFFLECOAT pottery - the trauma of wearing the coat to school(shiver), remnants of a pottery industry found on a beach //////// I found old Scottish sauce/coffee bottles near to my wife's workplace---- CO-OP business ! 14.20 - the perfect pendant! Very productive and piece eh peace for the wicked!

Is it possible to make wind chimes out of the kiln stilt? Just curious 🤨 I love pirate glass beautiful color that looks almost black 😊The transfer wear and sponge wear are great pieces! Of course the glass and all it’s colors are precious! I hope one day to buy a few lots . Have a wonderful weekend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💜

Thanks so much Susan! I think you could make wind chimes out of the kiln furniture - it is very hard and takes to drill but maybe with wire wrap? We are trying to always have a few lots of loose sea glass and pottery in our shop :) but if you are looking for something specific, just drop us a message via etsy! x

Thanks so much Susan! I guess after over 100 years of people collecting pottery from this beach it has to get rarer at some point... I've always found it's better in winter just soooo cold :)

As I have probably said before, modern kiln stilts, triangular, now with metal prongs in them, this metal dose not melt, and you place your glazed pot on top of the metal prongs so they do not stick to your kiln, but we were always told to clean our bottoms. Muahahaha. In case of drippy bottoms when glaze melts.

Guys, i'm a wee bit upset that you're taking things away with you! Where are you taking them? They're there to be enjoyed by everyone xx

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  ปีที่แล้ว

There really is no need to feel upset - we are carrying on a very old tradition, and, we're helping to create a cleaner and safer coastal environment for everyone to enjoy! Did you know this stuff was dumped in the burn and on the beach, over many years, and that it can be harmful to wildlife and children?
People have been taking things off this beach for well over 100 years - mainly with the aim of selling it to make a secondary living from the surrounding industries. Those industries used this beach to dump coal and mining waste; waste from industrial linoleum production; demolition waste, pottery seconds, glass and much more - this is where the pottery shards and various types of kiln waste come from - the place is still recovering from a very long history of being treated as a dump.
People continue to come here to collect sea coal to help with their heating needs - others collect glass, shards of pottery and whatever else they find here. If you have ever visited this beach, you will have no doubt seen dozens of people collecting this or that every time the tide is out. And its a good thing!
For our part, we always take only a small amount on any given visit - a handful or two, but no more. That way, there is always plenty left to find and collect. We also make a point of removing the plastic waste that we find - check out our videos, I think we are the only channel to feature plastics and to encourage others to remove and recycle or trap plastics out of the environment - moreover, when we make these videos, we also contribute to Scotland's wildlife charities!
So there really is no need to feel upset that, along with hundreds of other people who come here to collect a few shards of glass or pottery, we're helping to keep the place clean and safe...
I am actually writing this during a break from editing a video where we assist cleaning another beach covered in old car tyres, plastic bottles, shoes, traffic cones - you name it, the place was a mess... We're proud to do our bit to help keep the beaches beautiful, and we find happiness knowing that some people are keeping the place clean and free from things that can harm animals or children.
      Many thanks
