On Park St there’s little markers labelled St John’s Conduit on the pavement. They’re quite small, only the size of the small squares tiles… mush smaller than the manhole covers!
Aye, it certainly is very interesting indeed. All the years I lived in the area & never knew about the water conduits. I love learning about local history, especially Bristols history.
3:25 That's some serious amount of digging. You think you know a place and then... Thank you for this fascinating vid. Churz The 70s film you both mentioned is called The Hidden Source ~ St. John's Conduit and is equally a good watch but only ten mins or so.
Lovely video. Culver Street name could be derived from 'culvert street". Colston Hall was renamed Bristol Beacon in September 2020. Water used to flow constantly from the spout on Nelson Street. There was no tap. Perhaps construction of the newish sewer that passes through or near Trenchard Street car park had something to do with this.
Culvert could very well be the root of the name culver street. Considering recent attitudes toward Edward Colston, I'm not surprised Colston hall has been renamed. The Trenchard St sewer could possibly be the cause of the water no longer flowing. Could do with Bristol council having a bit of a look-see at what's going on; they probably won't though.

I had read about them; didn't think to look for them when I was up there yesterday.
A great video, local history is always so interesting!

Aye, that definitely was a heck of a lot of digging. I'm often amazed at the new stuff I learn about places I think I know well :)

Got to be from the culvert you're right. Reckon that Upper Wells Street isn't from the cathedral city but from this pipe and the wells all around.
