The Tesla Model 3 is the first affordable, mass-produced model in Tesla’s lineup. With its pure-electric drivetrain and minimalist interior, it offers buyers a high-tech alternative to conventional rivals such as the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. The Model 3 has been eagerly awaited in the UK with a long waiting list for potential customers - but does it live up to the hype? Ginny drives one of the first right-hand-drive examples to find out.

I bought the long range several months ago and love it. I agree it's quiet and road noise is more pronounced compared to an ICE car. I even had to remove the little cheap plastic bubble leveler for my baby car seat in the back because I was able to hear it's annoying rattling while driving. It's great that I pull into my garage everyday and it takes only a few seconds to plug it in and in the morning I have a full charge (90% setting.) I've told my friends in comparison it's like them having a gas pump in their garage with an infinite gas supply, never having to go to a gas station and not to mention the $ saved, my electricity rate here in Texas is $0.085 per kwh. The big issue I had was with Texas blocking Tesla owners from the state EV credits incentives, so I had to pay full price compared to people like in other states with EV credits and I had to have it shipped by 3rd party, but still happy with the purchase.

Great presenter and a great review.
Been looking intoTesla recently, and this model is growing on me.
I drive a total of 60 miles to work and back each day in my Mini John Cooper Works and have to fill almost up twice a week - averaging 40-41MPG, (which is good fun but not the most comfortable on rough road surfaces).
The cost of PCP on this car is similar to what I pay every month but not having to spend £70-£80 every 1 1/2 weeks filling up means that one of these could be pretty cost effective for me.
My work has a couple of charging points as well if I needed them, but the range on this car means that I can charge it at home, probably every 2 or 3 days without concerns.
I think I will be investigating further, even to get a car with the same 0-60 acceleration as mine, I would have to pay an awful lot more that this Tesla.
    Very interesting.

11:55 good join explaining why brake pedal feel is better than other EVs (and hybrids too): because regen is already engaged simply by lifting your foot off the accelerator pedal. In fact, I don't think the brake pedal has any effect on regen. So many auto journalists get this wrong, but you nailed it. 👍
Same deal with your point about jerky throttle response being driver error: some other reviews say Tesla should add fake transmission paddles to control regen, implying that you can't modulate regen with the accelerator pedal. But you get it: every car had different throttle response, and some have more compression braking than others. So it's not hard to adapt to using the accelerator pedal to control regen. 👍👍

My phone sometimes doesnt have good signal whichll delay the process plus i dont carry my wallet around with me all the time especially when going to work and i dont feel comfortable having the card possibly attached to my phone and i accidentally loose it. plus makes things like having to give "my keys" to either for tire services a bit easier.

    1) the all glass roof is standard in all Model 3, so the expressed concern about the headroom in the backseat without a glass roof is nil.

The LR RWD model has a 5.1 second 0-60 and the AWD version they are driving has an official time of 4.4 seconds. So not sure what was happening there.

still no fix on the trunk guttering?

  • @henrymoraveciii9445
    @henrymoraveciii9445 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

On the one hand, its good that Tesla is leading the way to the point that many manufacturers now make EVs which are comparable to ICE cars. You can tell from reading these comments that a significant number of potential buyers have great skepticism about EVs.
But on the other hand, reviewing this car in the same way as a traditional car is off. A review just popped up on my feed of the new BMW 7 series, and the majority of the comments were about the size of the grill.
Frankly, comparing a Model 3s features to any ICE car is, to a large extent, like comparing a Ford Model T to a horse, and all car reviews of other cars are like comparing two breeds of horse. Of those two modes of transport, one, the horse, was well established and there were people who spent their lives comparing one horse to another horse. Sure, at first, a Model T was a way to replace a horse or two.
Had the internet existed then, you would expect a number of posts about how gasoline was less or more expensive than hay or carrots, and how much a mechanic cost as opposed to a vetenarian. Someone would have of course pointed out that it was easy to convert your barn into a garage. Someone else would have of course argued bout how horses have such good off-road capability. And on and on. But those comparisons would have missed the point entirely. Just as railroads eliminated multiple horse stage coaches. As soon as ICE engines achieved multiple "horse power" it was game over for horses as the dominant mode of transport. All that had to happen was for ICE automobiles to become cost effective.
As an owner of an EV for five years and a Tesla owner for a few months, the main point is that EV's are so superior to ICE cars generally that its only a question of whether you, as the owner, can be fine with the differences the EV will bring, with the main one being range, potentially. With a range of over 300 miles, frankly, as a Tesla owner range is a non-issue.
The second thing about Tesla is the integration of the computer with the car, such that upgrades are available constantly, and not just for the self driving. I cannot imagine other automakers not doing this more or less immediately. Physical buttons or switches have no inherent advantage, and once built, they are limited. You have to drive a Tesla for a while to appreciate how much of a game changer this is as well.
So I suppose my point, if I have one, is that the ability to not need gasoline is so fundamental that comparing what you think of the storage room in the trunk is sort of beside the point. Its still relevant, I guess, but not in 2019. At some point when all cars are EVs we will get back to the concept of whether the armrests are well designed.

Every Tesla on the road records the driving conditions and enviroment and transmits this back to Tesla's central data system. Right now, their neural network is using this data to "learn" how to interpret and react to what Tesla calls the drivable area. Using not only the most powerful computer installed in any car, but coupling highly advanced software, the cars are all busy "learning" how to drive themselves.
To date, Tesla central computer has accumulated almost 3 BILLION miles of actual road data - many THOUSANDS of times as much as all other Self-driving technologies combined (eg: Waymo, Mobileye, etc). As actual DATA is the key to feature-rich and SAFE self-driving, every inch a Tesla car drives, contributes to better understanding (by the car - not people) of how to act and react, for not only that particula car - but every other Tesla on the road. What one car "learns" is analysed, and is then transmitted to ALL other Tesla's.
No other car maker can do this - most are a decade or more behind, and many will never manage to catch up.

Do stick to the charging range as recommended by Tesla to preserve your battery’s life. Overcharging it every time would cause in a depreciated battery life over a very short period of time. Enjoy!
