Thank you Matt for the Hard Again recommendation. Just listened to the whole album for the first time and it is a wonderfully free, powerful and joyful recording. It will be on my playlist for a long time. Jeff I have recently been doing your TrueFire lessons; fantastic inspiration and well guided for a Long time average guitar player who always wanted to play the blues. Thank you.

Totally agree on the Albert King “Answer to the laundromat blues” when I first heard that solo on that tune it floored me, the phrasing and the tone…also is my favourite blues solo ever committed to tape. Its immense 😎

    great conversation
i have all that stuff and more! grew up in chicago in the 60’s snd 70’s-used to go to kingston mines with our fake id’s when we were 16 before it was a cheezy Nashville/austin-style tourist trap to see muddy in residence there with the band on “hard again” et al.
johnny Winter put out a few monster records himself…his first one self titled was/is a definitve electric blues statement imo

37:58 - In the same way that Buddy Guy gave us a license to "freak out" on guitar we can credit John Mayall for establishing the precedent that anyone with a mediocre vocal can consider themselves a valid and marketable Blues singer. In that respect Mayall was arguably the most influential Blues artist of all time.

I love all those Albert King records you mentioned, but one not mentioned is "Blues at Sunrise" on Stax/Fantasy records recorded live at Montreux in 1973 but released in the 80s. He is absolutely burning it up on this record - I've never heard him play with such an overdriven tone on any other recording (maybe not his usual amp?! If anyone knows please, please let us all know!). Anyhow, if you've not heard this album, stop reading now and change your life!

That Otis Spann record you mentioned "Greatest thing since Colossus" is epic! I just love everything - the production sound, Otis's performance and, of course, Peter's playing is transcendent, as it often was! I would also recommend Eddie Boyd "The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions" that also showcases Peter in stellar support mode! Eddie was another great Chicago pianist and vocalist rather in the Otis Spann mode. From the album "The Big Boat" and "Just the Blues" stand out for those who want to just dip in. For my fellow geeks: track 18 "No Place Like Home" features Magic Sam on guitar - it's as good as you might hope!

I love how Matt is able to take all his Blues influences and mix in his Jazz sensibilities. He has such an amazing command of his instrument mixed with amazing songs and soulful vocals. Matt is the greatest Blues guitarist, to come out of the UK, since the late 60's in my opinion 😃

Matt is off on a couple points. In the 20s selling records were a concern. Race records were a thing and Charlie Patton, for example, was the biggest selling artist of the time. By the 30s (Robert Johnsons time) "country blues" died down, but 3 piece bands picked up the mantle. Bands like Mississippi Sheiks etc. The 1940s saw John Lee Hooker, and you get T-bone walker, The 50s was BB King, etc. The folk revival brought all the old black players, and shortly thereafter was the british blues invasion

Yep. Saw him as a kid at a folk festival. Loved him ever since. My 60 year old step-father was so inspired he bought a guitar and took lessons. Played for 30 years for his own pleasure.
Hurt didn't really sound like any other player. No Robert Johnson, Rev. Gary Davis, Otis Rush, or Magic Sam.

45:42 Great sympathy with Matt re players who skimp and fake the classics. Recently saw a guy come up to the mic at a Blues jam and call Born Under a Bad Sign. The bass and rhythm guitar nodded and said they knew the song but then played the progression from The Thrill is Gone. It was not pretty.
How about a vid with Matt listing the Blues Fails that make your blood boil?

Jeff, you are killing the conversation flow with silly nonsense about the sound, screens ...etc...etc....all the time. This is sooooo anoying. You don't have to tell when you go full screen on Matt. Matt knows a lot about the blues and it's very interesting listening to Matt telling the background stories behind these great albums. Jeff, stop killing the flow with nonsense!!
