Honda Ignition Key Won't Turn: Steering Lock Assembly Replacement and Immobilizer Programming

  • In this video, I show you how I replace a Steering Lock Assembly on a Honda and reprogram the Immobilizer system. This procedure is very similar on many Hondas with an ignition key. The exact vehicle in this video is a 2003 Honda Civic EX sedan.
    Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Airbag warning: SRS Airbags are a critical safety component and can deploy with enough force to seriously injury someone, even with the battery disconnected. Hammering or working near an SRS component can create a situation where an airbag can accidentally deploy. I do NOT recommend working on a vehicle SRS Airbag system unless properly trained. This video is for entertainment only.

      with those two headless bolts out why not grrind a slot in each one afterwards so you can just use a flat head screw driver if it happens again !!!

      @@EpicGamingEct Because you make a mess grinding stuff inside the car and those are security bolts. The head shears off to keep people (thieves) from easily removing the ignition/steering lock. If you want someone to defeat the lock with common tools in the future, you might as well use common bolts from the hardware store instead of the supplied shear bolts - no mess from grinding and easier to use a ratchet and socket than a flat head screwdriver.

      @@killer2600 no Epic is saying with the bolts out of the vehicle then grind a slot for replacement. I may try that but have some new spec bolts on order too. I have seen that suggestion on the Ridgeline forum too.

    Thanks. It was two weeks between disassembly, re-keying and re-addembly for me. Your clear information about two "wood-type screws at the top and one machine screw at the bottom" for the steering column cowling cover was very helpful as it's dark and cramped in the foot well. I filed the catching pawl off the sticking wafer and left it in the lock non-functionally so that I didn't lose it for possible re-furbishment later (hopefully avoiding having to re-key the locks). Thanks again.

    I am working on a 2008 Ridgeline here in 2024. My Ridgeline steering column may be a bit more complicated but this gives me hope. This is the most thoro video I have found - especially about how to get to and remove the housing. I live in very remote Alaska - no Honda dealers not lock smiths. I hope to remove the whole housing and take it to a locksmith to rebuild using a good original key. I'll have to trash the worn key. But you explained both options - very very good thank you.

    Excellent video. I did a honda Fit 2016 model. The two break off bolts are REVERSE thread on the honda 2016 Fit model. I used a chisel and hammer for many hours and they would not turn because i was chiseling them counter clockwise. I realized this after drilling them out.
    Had i known that they are reverse thread i wouldn't of drilled them out and had to purchase 2 more bolts off ebay etc
    Good video.
    If i was to do it again i would find the compressed pin and remove it only and replace just the key area. I couldnt find the pin as it was different from all the videos being a 2016 Honda Fit and ended up doing it the hardest way. I found the removal pin location after the whole unit was removed.

    Alternate idea that may work for some. I had a locksmith come and make a key without programming it. He put the key on vice grips an worked it into the ignition cylinder. It took some work but he was able to re break the cylinder and my original key worked again. It was only $100 dollars to make a copy of the key and for his time. Well worth it. Have not had any issues since and I keep the spare in case I need to rework the cylinder to match the key cut.

Another (cheaper) option is take lock assembly out and have a locksmith fix the lock cylinder. Generally when this is done it avoids the programming and you can still use the old key. My civic is currently stuck in a parking lot with same problem and I'm trying to at least get the steering unlocked.. Was this procedure done with steering unlocked already via using that other key the way you did to get it going and in the garage? I guess my question is will I still be able to get it off if steering is locked? I have no access to another same gen honda key.
    Before when it started getting jammed, the hard part was turning it enough to get the steering unlocked then key turned fine between off/1/2 (or like off 90% off- i wasnt quite pulling it all the way back but enough to cut power to radio etc). If I take the assy off, and depress the steering lock "button" that slides up, I am hoping to be able to turn the key forward again. I wouldnt even mind blocking that button somehow so the steering never locks again ( until I get it fixed properly but I am just trying to get going for now.. )

    Can you explain what you did with the scan tool when you said that we have to tell the ecm that there is a new immobilizer installed. Great video. Thank you

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The replacement parts contained a new Immobilizer unit and new Immobilizer key, both need to be programmed to PCM of vehicle (all three communicate together). The Immobilizer has to be programmed first ("tell the ECM there is a new Immobilizer") and then the same programming is done a second time for the key. So basically what I was doing at that time was programming the new Immobilizer that was part of the new steering lock assembly to the vehicle's PCM. Thanks for the comment!

      @@BigDog50001 SO IF I LEAVE THE OLD IMMOBILIZER AND ONLY CHANGE THE CYLINDER AND KEYS DO I HAVE TO USE THE PROGRAMMING TOOL OR WILL THE OLD IMMOBILIZER PROGRAM THE NEW KEY? ALSO WHAT IF I JUST CHANGED THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN WITH WORKING KEY AND EVERYTHING WOULD I STILL HAVE TO DO ANY PROGRAMMING? CAN YOU SHOW A WAY TO CHANGE THE KEY WITHOUT PROGRAMMING?

    I found squirting some Kroil onto the bolts clamping the switch housing to the steering column then waiting a while finally helped me loosed the bolts with a small cold chisel rotating the bolt heads.

    My Jazz/Fit is doing this now out of nowhere and its just not worth spending on a whole new unit. Im wondering if its possible to bypass the immobiliser somehow and put a hidden switch somewhere instead.

    The switch I bought didn’t come with the piece that attaches to the side where you put the key in. On my SI there is 1 white plug on the right side. that doesn’t marry to anything on my new setup. and I saw on my old switch that little box where it used to plug in at. Do I take it off and attach it to the new one? Or is it not necessary?

    Cut a new key and re-used the old chip which was still good. Had that key for 9 years. Wear and tear was the culprit.

      The bolt heads shear off when you tighten them to prevent them from being easily removed (anti-theft).

    Hi great video, very detailed steps. I have a 07 civic and the key won’t come out of the ignition if you don’t push the gear selector into park hard enough. Happens more if I park uphill. I have to put the key into accessory mode and move the gear selector back into park but hard. Any idea what this could be?

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Key Interlock, Multiplex Control Unit (MICU), Park Pin Switch, and the Transmission Range Switch all work together to lock the key in place so it will not come out when driving.
      From what you describe, I would start by troubleshooting the Park Pin Switch (located near gear selector) and then the Transmission Range Switch (located on transmission). The Park Pin Switch needs to be tested manually, the Transmission Range Switch data can be seen by a factory capable scan tool.

    Is there anything you can do to get the old ignition to turn. My problem is that the fob is broken off the key, i was going to buy anew fob and change out the key and transponder, but ive got the key glued and tape up on the fob but i cant get it to turn the ignition. Also with the ignition off the car, should it make that the plunger that you line up in the slot on the column to go down when the key is inserted

      yes, eventually if you dont care about car being stolen you can glue the old key somewhere inside very close to the ignition.

    The best time to fix your Honda (or any other brand) ignition is the moment it starts acting up/requires jiggling or playing with it to get it to turn. It's cheaper if you fix it early, if the key still can be made to work and turn often a locksmith can repair/replace the lock cylinder for not a lot of money. If your key being worn is part of the problem, as it often is on Hondas, a locksmith can cut a new key to factory specs and program it to the vehicle. The cost of a locksmith doing this on a lock that is just starting to fail but hasn't completely become inoperable is cheaper than the purchase price of this complete Honda ignition assembly and you won't be stuck with two keys for one car.
