    Key would not turn in my 2004 Honda Pilot. The ignition was sticking, and it turned out it was the wafers in the locking cylinder. I was able to fix it myself - saved me $300-$650 or more. In this video I show and explain the process.

    Update: tiny black cotter pins! One on the bottom of the tumbler that if you just pinch the tip of the cylinder with a pair of channel locks and jimmy it until it will fall out. Then theres another one that actually releases the cylinder from the tumbler itself. That one is harder to get out but i got it with a tiny cylindrical piece of metai had that was a little smaller in diameter, gently set it on top of the cotter pin, and used a small flat head screw driver to pry off rhe cylinder to push it out, took the wafers out, re assembly, and wahlah!!!! Shazam baby!!! Thank you so much for your insight and help! And also with the faith i was praying the whole time!!!

    So I spent my day doing this. I thought the wheel was locked but nothing would free it up. I didn't have the funds to buy a new ignition AND reprogramming new keys. So I took out the ignition cylinder and sure enough one of the wafers was sticking up. My only mistake was taking the key out and the wafers fell out. I had only planned to remove the one, but ended up having to remove them all. Thanks for this. Never in a million years would I have thought to do this. (Especially on drilling two holes into the ignition cylinder to get the roll pins out). Put it back together and it started up. Part of me is still in disbelief it worked.

      By the way, when I first did this I just took out a few wafers. Then the same thing happened again a few months later, so I took them all out. Probably better to remove them all from the beginning. Only thing is, the key will now fall out while driving - but it's no issue.

    • @dookiebot

      @@Ferraridude13 Never had it happen, but I also didn't have a lot of attachments on my key ring to make it heavy and hang off the key itself (which the weight could pull it out). If you have the funds, you can have it repaired properly. Worked out well for me because about a month after I did this repair for free, a person lost control on the highway and slammed into me at 60mph and totaled my car. That would have been money down the drain.

    Thanks for posting this video! I was about to spend way too much on my old 2003 Odyssey, and this "free" fix did the job great. I had some challenges getting the cylinder to slide out (it was really stuck for some reason), and the one (of four) gold screws was so difficult to reach (like you mentioned in the video) that I just broke the plastic arm connected to it... 3 other screws are plenty to hold the cover black apparatus in place. I also removed all of the pins. Works great now!

    Before remove ignition thambler out do i have to remove some kind pin and what key position

  • @klujics123
    @klujics123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My sheer bolts would not come out or turn on my ‘06 CRV. I found out that you can leave them alone and by unscrewing the plastic around the ignition cylinder you can access the pin. The pin holding the lock cylinder to the housing did not want to come out... I drilled 2 holes (one hole in front and one behind the pin) and when all else failed I used a grinder to grind down a pair of needle nose pliers to fit. After many attempts the pen finally was pulled free.
    What I found out in the process is that you can drill one hole to the right of the pen toward the and then go ahead and drill another hole another hole to the right of that hole and slide remove the lock cylinder with the pen still in the cylinder. Makes it quick and easy. Reason being is that you do not need to use the pen when placing the lock cylinder back. As the cylinder will be held in with the plastic when the 4 screws are placed back and work perfectly... I bought a replacement lock cylinder (with 2 keys) off of Amazon for $18. It worked great. Before I used it, I tried the method in some videos of removing and pulling whatever pen was stuck in the out position and reusing the same cylinder. However I had no luck with that, at all. I’d say try that first cannot hurt, might have better luck.
    Also I’d say if you can use a chisel or dremel and remove the sheer pens easily then go for it.
    If you can drill one hole and remove the pin holding the lock cylinder, then try it.
    Or you can just not fool with any of that drill the holes needed to slide the cylinder out and fix or replace the cylinder and slide it all back in, try the key and then replace the plastic and go on with your day. (At least this is my experience with my CRV). I thought I needed the locking pen (so I took extra time to remove it (just in case), but when I was able to replace the cylinder without reinstalling and have everything work perfectly fine (as if it was installed) I wanted to spread the word.
    Lastly always best to disconnect the negative battery terminal as you do not want to trigger the airbag by pulling out a connector. Peace. :)

    My 2 cents!!!!!!! 1st I want to thank U for this video!!!!!! My story is my 2005 surburban went in the shop the Monday after Christmas. Still waiting for it now smh I have a 2000 Acura tl. Everything was fine until Thursday night I believe it was, my fiancé said the ignition wouldn't turn over. Im thinking I'm going out to wiggle the steering wheel and start it up, nope not this time smh. I messed with it for 2 days still nothing so I found a video and it said the steering wheel lock assembly was bad so I took it off. I was happy to get it off because those 2 screws that hold the assembly to the steering wheel shaft is in an awkward spot and the video I saw the guy used a punch and a hammer to get it out smh I tried that!!! Fuck that get an extractor tool kit and a drill trust me!!!! I had both already so that was a blessing. Anyway I got it out and the bolts came out easier than I thought. So I have the whole assembly out and its Saturday 530pm and the dealership close at 6 and opened again Monday morning. Had to wait until Monday only to call the Honda dealership and Acura dealership for both of them to tell me the part is DISCONTINUED!!!!!! U know how I'm feeling now smh. So Im looking on amazon and ebay and Im not happy with the search bc on ebay they were all used and I didn't want to get a used part and go thru the same thing and on amazon the part number just wouldn't come up for the Acura. The video I saw was a few yrs old but damn this guy had a new part from the dealership smh. Anyway I found this video hold on no wait I called a lock smith Sat night he was talking about 270+ dollars and he acted like he couldn't understand what U was trying to get him to do which was break the lock cylinders. I got that from the comment section of that video. A guy did that but he said it was $100. But anyway they didn't come I called again yesterday and they said they would come around 4 its was 10am then smh so I found this video and I did exactly what U did and I did have a little screw fall out that was more like a pin its gold it has a head like a nail but the bottom part is not threaded and its not long maybe 3 or 4 centimeters if that but it fell out and I couldn't pin point exactly where it came from but its still on the table lol kinda like putting something together and still have screws left over lol whatever it didn't effect anything and I took all if the waffers tumblers or whatever they are ALL out!!!!! Put it back connected it to the car to see if it would turn over and it did. I felt like a master mechanic/ locksmith lol it felt good!!!! Then around 5 pm I get a call from the locksmith and I told him I was good I fixed it and he asked me what did I do and I told him and he said well U did all off the work good job. Thanks again for this video!!! I told my son God gave me hands to work with and a brain to understand all I have to do is put the effort in and this 13 yo son of mines said yea and he gave U a youtube video to look too!!!!! Lmao

    Great video but I'll add this.. The only split wafer that should be removed or replaced is the one that was sticking out of the plug. I think the locksmith meant to remove the wafers, BUT then to replace them with new ones. Since one is worn out or damaged, others might start to do the same. The pins (in this case split wafers) in a lock, are what hold the key in the cylinder when it is turned. I used to be a locksmith too.
    It's those split wafers that are usually the problem. My daughter's car, driver side door lock also couldn't turn. One wafer was the problem. I only took out the wafer that was sticking out and left the others in.

    Hi! I did this today on my 06 Ridgeline, by removing 1 wafer, but I also experienced problems when putting the ignition/sylinder back in. For some reason the key won't turn, and there are no lights coming on on the dashboard. Sadly, I cannot remove the pin again, since my tools broke while prying it out the first time. Did you ever figure out what the reason was, why the ignition wouldn't turn once you put it back in? I'm suspecting the steering wheel lock, but cannot say for sure.

    • @TheQuarterAcreHomestead
      @TheQuarterAcreHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible to put the tumbler in upside down. Try taking the pin out (get new tools?) and flipping it over. I had to do that here in the video: th-cam.com/video/Gcb2muIbDzY/w-d-xo.html

      @@TheQuarterAcreHomestead Hi, thanks for your reply. I got it out again. No, the tumbler is inserted just as it should. If you mean the brass colored thing on top of the cylinder housing. I've tried removing and inserting the key housing multiple times, but the key doesn't turn once it's inserted. Wiggeling the steering wheel makes no difference either. It's as if the car doesn't recognize the key anylonger. The dashboard lights are off, even if the key is inserted.

      @@JesusWins Hi! I figured out what it was. There's a lock mechanism on the inside of the lock assembly/housing, facing towards the steering column. Sometimes if the lock cylinder is pulled out a bit to fast, the lock in the column will activate. The only way to disengage it, is to remove the assembly and press the lock mechanism back inside. (If that makes any sense). It's an anti theft feature.

    Just take the lock cylinder out by pulling the roll pins take the lock cylinder out pull the Fing wafers and tiny springs out put back together. Slapper all back together and never have this problem again. The transponder in the key is the trick to getting it to start anyway so why f with the stupid never ending failing wafers and the key that is constantly wearing.And yes The stearing wheel still locks when you turn it off and pull the key.You can take your key out while its running too which is very convient at times. I put one full rap of black electric tape at the end of the cuts on the key so that the key doesnt fall out of the lock easily. Just did this today and it works like a champ. Sorry locksmith's but this nightmare is BS AND I FOUND THE CURE. Save yourself a tow and 200 bucks buying new keys blah blah

      It was a small retaining pin located near where the key goes in. It's on the side facing you between the cylinder and the "block of metal". You can't see it but i's in there. I had to use a screwdriver to pry it open enought for the cylinder to slide out without breaking the metal block. I left the pin in and had to smack the cylinder with my hand to get it to snap back in where the retaining pin could still hold it. Seems to be holding ok so far. I also removed all of the tumblers. The key is pretty loose but hasn't fallen out of the cylinder. The electronics in the key fob are still functional so no computer needed to reset anything. Hope this makes sense.
