My tailor is so rude but £6 to close on the waist? I'll take the disrespect for a bargain

An important thing to do if you're getting something altered is to wear the kind of shoes you plan on wearing it with! If you know you wear those pants with sneakers most of the time, get them pinned/marked in that kind of sneakers. If you know you're going to wear that suit with platform Docs, wear those when you get it marked! If you know that you always wear that one piece with those one shoes, wear them to get it fitted! ESPECIALLY if you'll be wearing heels. That really shifts how the hem hits, and changes your posture everywhere else. From someone who works in costuming and alterations, and alters a lot of my own clothes, wearing the right shoes makes a big difference in the finished result!
Love this video! I always support altering things to fit well, and love to see someone sharing the real truth about it. I was nodding along the whole time, especially when it came to the prices. They charged exactly what I would've guessed, and for most, exactly what I would've charged myself. It can be pricey, but you're paying for skills and expertise. Just like Jade says, only you can decide if the cost is worth it for you. I highly recommend getting things tailored if you have the means. :)

Now I'm scared of wearing the wrong shoes to the tailors :(

    • @shenenigans2037

@@ben-wm6yc As long as you don't wear anything too crazy, you'll be okay, even if it won't be perfect. It's really the most important when you're getting bottoms hemmed. It's important to consider, but not worth freaking out over! Personally, I just wear my favorite shoes, unless I know I'll be wearing something like heels with the outfit (which is rare). Sorry to scare you!

This was actually super helpful. My wife is masculine presenting and struggles to find clothes that fit the way she likes. I've thought about bringing her clothes to the tailor but didn't really know what to expect or what was involved. Also, that thick blue over shirt is hitting in ALL the right places now. 👌🔥Def worth the investment.

I always try to support minority businesses when I can, since they usually have better customer service and prices. When I moved to Berlin I went to get these pants tailored and out of laziness I went to this shop a block away. It was run by a white German man and there was an Asian woman sitting in the back sewing. I got weird vibes from this dynamic. Then he began asking me all these invasive questions, like where I was from (I'm Chinese-American) and all these other extra things. Went to a Turkish tailor the next time who was extremely friendly and nice, didn't ask stupid questions, and just overall good vibes in the shop. And was cheaper! I always go back to his shop and he always remembers me. It really does make a difference. German customer service is also generally pretty bad so I always prefer to go out of my way to support minority businesses.

i like that you brought up the style of hem on the green pants and the shape that you asked for on the blue over shirt. the last time i got something tailored, it was an expensive dress with a diagonal plaid pattern and the hem that the tailor did looked strange with the way the dress was. it was the length that i asked for, but i didnt think to ask for specific style of hem. i'm hesitant to go to tailors because i dont want to pay to have clothes mildly ruined out of my own inability to communicate what i want / don't want XD

The PDX carpet at the dry cleaners! I don't understand why/how that became such a thing, but I've taken the picture too. People have gotten mad at me for taking carpet pictures at other airports, lol. I've never utilized tailoring for casual wear, but I can definitely see the difference! Cool way to get a much more personal, custom closet.

I bought a skirt for $25 and tailored it for $30. Now I have a skirt I love, wear all the time, and fits me perfectly. No regrets. (It's tartan - so it couldn't be taken in on just one side or the pattern would be off, and it had a zip - so it was more work than a usual waste adjustment)
